"During the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, Wenders asks a number of film directors from
around the world to get, each one at a time, into a hotel room, turn on the camera and
sound recorder, and, in solitude, answer a simple question: "What is the future of
cinema?".

A German film crew is in Portugal to shoot a black-and-white remake of Roger
Corman's 1955 movie, Day the World Ended. The production runs out of film and
money and the director, Friedrich Munro, cannot reach his producer, Gordon, and so
sets off to find him. The crew waits for Friedrich's return in an abandoned hotel. As they
grow restless and bored, the film depicts some of their philosophical thoughts and
emotional reactions, focusing on the themes of cinema, illusion and reality. Friedrich
eventually manages to track the producer in Los Angeles, who is in mortal danger
because of money he owes to the Mafia.

In 17th-century Salem, Hester Prynne must wear a scarlet 'A' because she is an
adulteress, with a child out of wedlock. For seven years, she has refused to name the
father. A vigorous older stranger arrives, recognized by Hester but unknown to others
as her missing husband. He poses as Chillingworth, a doctor, watching Hester and
searching out the identity of her lover. His eye soon rests on Dimmesdale, a young
overwrought pastor. Enmity grows between the two men; Chillingworth applies
psychological pressure, and the pastor begins to crack. A ship stops in Salem, and
Hester sees it as a providential refuge for her daughter, herself, and her lover. But will
Dimmesdale flee with her?

This Wim Wenders film centers around the story of two angels wandering in a mixture
of post-war and modern Berlin. They are invisible to humans. They nevertheless give
their help and comfort to all the lonely and depressed souls they meet. Finally, after
many centuries, one of the angels becomes unhappy with his immortal state and
wishes to become human in order to experience the joys of everyday life. He meets a
circus acrobat and finds in her the fufillment of all his mortal desires. He also discovers
that he is not alone in making this cross over, and that a purely spiritual experience is
not enough to satisfy anyone.

Hsiao - Hsien Hou
Hsiao - Hsien Hou was born on 8 April
1947, Meixian, Guangdong, China.In
1948, his family moved to Taiwan and, like
all children raised there, he went through
an extremely demanding educational
system. In 1969, he studied film at the
National Taiwan Arts Academy. After
graduation in 1972, he worked briefly as a
salesman. Later he began his film career
as a scriptwriter and assistant director.
Hou's films are often concerned with his
experiences of growing up in rural Taiwan
in the 1950s and 1960s, the period which
saw the beginning of the most significant
social change in modern Taiwan. Hou's
films have been awarded prizes from
prestigious international festivals such as
the Venice Film Festival, Berlin Film
Festival. Six of his films to date have been
nominated for the Palme d'Or at the
Cannes Film Festival, though the prize
has so far eluded him. Hou was voted
"Director of the Decade" for the 1990s in a
poll of American and international critics.
Hou is also a singer, having contributed
two songs to the 1992 soundtrack of Dust
of Angels, a movie he also produced. Hou
has also had some acting experience,
appearing as the lead in fellow Taiwanese
New Wave auteur Edward Yang's 1984
film, Taipei Story.

One of today's greatest filmmakers, Hou Hsiao-Hsien pays homage to one of the
masters, Yasujiro^ Ozu, commemorating the centenary of Ozu's birth. In a residential
Tokyo neighborhood, Yoko, a young freelance writer defies her strongly traditional
parents with news that she is pregnant and has no desire to marry the father. She
calmly accepts this reality and stoically deals with the worried reactions of her family. In
an effort to alleviate her loneliness, she befriends the owner of a second-hand
bookstore. He falls in love with her, but keeps his feelings silent. Gradually, Yoko
begins to re-evaluate everything in her life in this meditative masterpiece of young
urban solitude.

'Ah-Sang (Fan Yang) is a college-going young woman living with her sister, a school
going teenager, her brother, a lifelong thief, now escalating the ladders of the mafia
and her grandfather. Ah-Sang tries to find some happiness in the relationships with her
family and friends, but is continually hampered by the ever-increasing brutality of the
world around her. She tries to escape the bleakness by imagining herself as Carol, a
manga character who leaves her family and flees to ancient Egypt only to be killed at
22. Surely, Ah-Sang is no better than the fish in the tank in her apartment. Even amidst
this desolation, she remains hopeful of a meaningful relationship with one of her
brothers mafia friends, only to be disappointed later. These are, truly, victims of the
neon god.

Tattooed mobster, Kao, and his quick-tempered, aptly named protégé, Flathead,
along with their girlfriends, Ying and Pretzel, are desperately trying to make it big. Their
master plan is open a restaurant in Shanghai, but that scheme seems less and less
likely with each call they get from their cell phone. Corrupt mainland potentates want a
king's ransom in kickbacks while Pretzel has racked up a king's ransom of debt herself
at the mahjong table, prompting her to make a half-hearted suicide attempt. To make
ends meet, these would-be entrepreneurs make a stab at swindling the government
over swine -- selling sows when they are supposed to be the more valuable studs.
They wine and dine the farmers in rural backwater Chiayi only to get cut out of the deal
and kidnapped by the corrupt police.
