MILLBRAE, CA – Join the Northern California Underwater Photographic Society (www.NCUPS.org) for a night dedicated to members! The doors will open at 7:00pm for the Annual Dive and Photo Gear Swap Meet. At 8:00 pm we will begin our meeting with a presentation on the 2008 California Beach Dive Photo Competition (CBDC). Afterwards, the night continues with member presentations! We'll hold the mini-comp directly after the member presentations and after which time we will break and do more gear swapping and socializing. The annual swap meet, usually held in January, will be held in June this year to compliment the Members Night. So, go through your closets and bring that dive and photo gear that you are no longer using to the meeting. Price your stuff beforehand and come to the meeting ready to wheel and deal. Tables will be provided for displaying your gear. Remember, your unused gear may be something another member or guest can use! The CBDPC presentation will feature a “Day in the Life” show and a presentation of the competition winners. Couldn't make it to the competition? Come to the meeting to see your friends having fun, braving the Monterey ocean waters, and winning fabulous prizes. Or, come to the meeting to bask in the glory of your winning image(s) being displayed to an awestruck audience! Bring your friends, family, and coworkers to see what a beach dive photo competition really is. (Continued on page 3) 2008 California Beach Dive Competition Robbie Turner MONTEREY, CA – The 2008 California Beach Dive Photo Competition was a resounding success with 73 entrants. The weather was great and the visibility was the best seen on a competition day in many years. The images were phenomenal and the judges had a hard time choosing the winning images. We started the weekend by picking up our registration packets and t-shirts at Aquarius Dive Shop. The registration crew consisted of Helga Mahlmann, Jim Kaller, Mark Krag, Sue Estey and Tom Patterson. Patti Baugh did a great job in designing the t-shirts which were printed by Fashion Streaks in Seaside. (Continued on page 6) Photo: Clinton Bauder. Best of Show, Winner Open Digital Normal/Wide Angle, CBDC 2007 Decommissioning of the MV Odyssea 1 Northern California Underwater Photography Society Andrew Lok (Introduction by Josh Honomichl) The following letter was brought to my attention a few weeks ago. It’s a grim reminder of the pain that the recent severe storms exacted upon our friends at the other end of the Pacific. Please join me in wishing our wonderful sponsor a full and speedy recovery. President Position Open [email protected] Vice President/ Position Open Speaker Coordinator [email protected] Equipment Manager Randy Herz [email protected] May 13, 2008 Secretary Jim Kaller [email protected] Dear associates, clients, and friends, It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of our company's decision to decommission MV Odyssea 1. MV Odyssea 1 was badly damaged in a very bad storm on Sunday evening. As such, we will not be able to provide liveaboard services with immediate effect and all cruises chartered or booked are cancelled. She returned safely to Manado on Saturday morning after a successful season in Raja Ampat from Sorong. There were no guests onboard when the accident occurred as we were preparing for docking. The crew are all fine and are safely back on land. In the mid afternoon of Sunday (11 May), she was moored off Wori Bay in front of our resort (Cocotinos) in preparation for docking. During this time, the weather was turning with very strong winds coming from the north-west coupled with big waves forming and the tide going low. The captain decided that it was safer to move to a better-sheltered lagoon in Lantung where we normally go to during adverse weather such as the one we experienced on Sunday. Upon approaching the lagoon, the engines failed with attempts to restart it futile and the anchor was dropped immediately by the captain. At this point, the big waves took her closer to the reef but without the anchor securing on the seabed, she was pushed on to the top of the reef by the storm which resulted in severe damage to the hull. Further extensive damage was done by the constant and relentless pounding of the waves while she was trapped on the reef. At first light, we inspected her and had to acknowledge that she is no longer seaworthy and beyond economical (Continued on page 5) repair. Northern California Underwater Photography Society Monthly Newsletter 3 Volume 6 Number 6 June 2008 9th Annual San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition Deadline: July 1 MBARI Open House July 19 SAN DIEGO, CA – The 2008 San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition will be held on Friday and Saturday, August 22–23 at Qualcomm Hall in San Diego, California. The San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition (UFEX) had its debut in 2000 with a night of underwater digital films presented at the Otto Center of the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park. Initiated in response to the need for a local venue to showcase Photo: San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition some of the best of the underwater video creations of area divers, the first San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition was organized by a small group of people who had been meeting regularly to share information on shooting and editing underwater video. MOSS LANDING, CA – This Summer, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute will once again open its doors to the public for a day of fun and education. The MBARI open house is free Photo: MBARI and will feature science and technology exhibits, displays of deep-sea video from Monterey Bay, research presentations, children's activities, and ocean career information. MBARI staff, scientists, and engineers will share their excitement about the institute's work. Visitors to the open house will be able to view MBARI's robotic deep-sea vehicles: the remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) Ventana and Tiburon; the autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs); and the Benthic Rover-distant cousin to the Mars rovers. All three MBARI research ships will be at the dock during the event and Photo: MBARI crew from the ships will be available to answer your questions. Free tickets will be released throughout the afternoon for a limited number of people to walk through our largest ship, R/V Western Flyer. Please note that the Department of Homeland Security requires that MBARI check identification of anyone wishing to board the R/V Western Flyer; boarding is considered consent to screening and inspection. Photo identification will be required. That first year was a rousing success, and laid the groundwork for an approach to presenting underwater digital video in San Diego that emphasizes the enjoyment and appreciation of underwater images. That approach includes affordable tickets, no prizes except the fun of sharing one's film with an appreciative audience, and an independent film selection process that has included judges who are among the top in the field of underwater imaging. It's a labor of love by all involved! We're now in our ninth year of putting on the San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition, and looking forward to our best year yet. We hope you'll join us on Friday and Saturday, August 22nd and 23rd, 2008 for the 9th Annual San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition at Qualcomm Hall's beautiful state-of-the-art digital projection theater. MBARI is located in Moss Landing, halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey off Highway 1. The Duke Energy Power Plant is a visible landmark to Moss Landing. From Highway 1, turn west (toward ocean) Photo: MBARI onto Moss Landing Road. Turn on Sandholdt Road and cross the bridge. MBARI is on the west side of the road. For submission guidelines or more information on the contest visit the contest website (www.sdufex.com) or contact Eric Hanauer ([email protected]) or Chuck Nicklin ([email protected]). The Open House begins at 12:00 noon and ends at 5:00 p.m. The exhibits and activities will be available at 12:00 noon. The R/V Western Flyer walkthroughs will start at 12:00 noon. Volume 6 Number 6 June 2008 4 Northern California Underwater Photography Society Monthly Newsletter Announcements Monthly Mini-Comp Winners This Month: Textures/Patterns Decommissioning of the MV Odyssea 1 The April minicomp was a fantastic display of talent with a variety of entries submitted on the topic of “Wrecks (ship, barge, car, airplane, etc.).” Congratulations to the winners! (Continued from page 2) The weather has been unpredictable of late, with the cyclone in Myanmar on 3rd May and typhoon Rammasun in Philippines last week. The irony is that we could rescue others a few days earlier on our way back from Sorong but could not avoid a disaster ourselves. The forces of nature are greater than us. We had made two rescues, starting with a family in a small boat that flipped over and they were drifting for 12 hours before we spotted them. We dropped them off at their village at Kofiau and continued our return journey. After passing Halmahera, we seek an SOS call from a cargo vessel which had a broken shaft and was drifting for four days in the Moluccas sea. We brought all nine of the crew onboard and continued our journey, bringing them back safely to Manado with Odyssea 1 and her crew a day later than scheduled. Wrecks (ship, barge, car, airplane, etc.) First Jane Call Second Randy Herz Third Russ Wiitala Cocotinos and Odyssea Divers will continue to provide the resort and diving services in Manado as usual, and we will keep you updated on the opening of our new resort in Lombok in August 2009. I look forward to your continuing support. Warmest regards Andrew Lok Managing Director, Odyssea Asia Pte Ltd. www.odysseadivers.com ~ www.cocotinos.com Photographer’s Notes: Jake’s Seaplane Jane Call (Photographer) “Jake's Seaplane” (see opposite column) was taken in April 2006 in Palau during the Digital Shootout (Nikon D100, Titan Housing, 16-mm lens, 1/60, F7.1, ISO 200). The photo depicts a Japanese torpedo bomber downed while Japan fought valiantly to keep occupation of Palau, a favored vacation destination. My lesson from this photo was to “take advantage of unexpected opportunity.” As can happen on any trip, the diver in the photo had shadowed me for several dives. As she swam over my shoulder, she bumped me while I was near the open nose of the plane, looking for interesting angles and lighting possibilities. A little miffed, I graciously backed off and let her in — I could return. As I turned to leave, I noticed that I could use her (obnoxiously) bright attire to contrast the dull state of the plane and surrounding fore and backgrounds – in this case she made the perfect model! Without notifying her, I waited for the desired behavior. As she moved in and looked about to be swallowed by the open nose, I laughed in my regulator and depressed the shutter release. I think that is why we had 17 people register the day of the competition. Images were submitted from almost every beach dive site along Monterey Bay. Eben Haber manned the digital drop-off by himself this year at Backscatter. Kudos to you, Eben! Eben has asked that we have at least one volunteer assist him next year to keep the line moving. Luckily we were in Backscatter where we could look at all the latest camera and video equipment. Jim Kaller dropped off the film for developing and missed dinner Saturday night in order to pick up the processed film. Sunday, he set up the selection for our filmasauruses. We started our cocktail hour at 5:45 pm. Ruth and Michael Chofre greeted everyone with name tags and sold drink tickets. Lanette Otvos gave out membership info and sold tshirts. The main attraction to the cocktail hour is Ben Tetzner’s homemade beer. The brewmeister and Warren Quon served as bartenders. The beer was excellent as usual and was enjoyed so much that we ran out before the night was over. Susan Brown and a crew of people slaved in the kitchen to make one of the best dinners we’ve had. The dinner crew consisted of Susan Brown, Paula Butler, Brad Brown, Liz and Scott Hamilton, Linda Reisinger, Kathy Mendes, Jim Kaller, Helga Mahlmann, and Rick and Robbie Turner. Pastry chefs were Linda Reisinger, Susan Brown and Rick Turner. Our AV guy, Randy Herz, made sure the sound system was up and running for our evening speaker. Our emcee for the evening was Rick Turner. Another highlight of the evening was having Mark Snyder from New York present some of his images from his favorite destination. Mark is famous for shooting wide angle shots with four Inon strobes and shooting macro with three Inon strobes. He even gave us a preview of some of the images which will be in the upcoming Fathoms magazine. His images were fabulous and his stories engaging. We’ll definitely have Mark come back to wow us next year at one of our meetings. Sunday morning our filmasaurases chose their images and the judges began their deliberations. Our judges were professional photographers: Andy Sallmon, Kevin McDonnell, and Mark Snyder. All three have backgrounds in cold water photography. In fact, Andy and Mark went for a dive at the Breakwater on Saturday, so they were aware of the conditions the entrants had to shoot images. If you want to learn more about our judges or to see some of their images, visit: www.seait.com, www.mcdonnellphotography.com, and www.starknakedfish.com. The judging process was run by Chuck Tribolet and Eben Haber with assistance from Helga Mahlmann. (Continued from page 6) This year we decided to have a seminar in the morning for all the participants and their guests. The seminar was well attended given it started so early in the morning! Rick Turner was the emcee for the seminar and awards ceremony. Randy Herz was our AV guy. After seeing our two presenters, the consensus for next year is to have seminars again. Finally, the judges were done and Chuck Tribolet had put together the winning images into a show and it was time to start our awards show. Rene De La Briandais shot and prepared the Day In the Life Show with a few images donated by Kathy Mendes, Randy Herz and Charlie Eng. The winning images were shown and then the winners were allowed to choose their prizes. Robbie Turner and Kathy Mendes worked with the sponsors to generate a great prize list including seven trips. Reef & Rainforest arranged three of the trips, so a big thank you to Jenny! Congratulations to all the winners. Check out the winning images and our current sponsors on the NCUPS website, www.ncups.org. Remember to use our sponsors and tell our sponsors how much we appreciate them. Our first presenter was Jay Ireland. Jay is a partner in Bradley Ireland Productions, one of the largest film and video underwater stock house agencies in the world. He is also a contributing member in the non-profit, Imaging Foundation. With over 30 years of experience as both a photographer and a diver, Jay has captured extraordinary images both above and below the water in some of the most exotic places in the world. His combined understanding of diving, marine wildlife, and the unique aspects of shooting underwater ensures he captures striking images. Jay shared with us how he tries to reach young people by making short videos for YouTube and MySpace. He admitted that many of the videos he makes are not to his liking, but in order to reach the younger generation, you must create videos that they will watch. To see more images and videos by Jay, visit: www.bradleyireland.com and www.imagingfoundation.org. Special thanks to the many members who regularly volunteer to make this annual event happen. The NCUPS 2008 California Beach Dive Photo Competition is over, so now it is time to start planning the 2009 competition. If you would be interested in volunteering as the director for the 2009 competition, have some constructive suggestions for next year, would be interested in helping organize a video category, or would like to volunteer to assist in some other way in 2009, please email [email protected]. Kawika Chetron Memorial Award Many of you will have known Kawika Chetron. He was a regular diver seen at the Coast Guard Breakwater in Monterey with his Boston Whaler and red high-top sneakers. Kawika was also a gifted underwater photographer and would go the limit to visit the most remote Northern California reefs to capture a great shot. He was famous for a self-portrait of himself and one of his harbor seal friends. Kawika was also very personable and well-liked by other divers and underwater photographers. A little over a year ago Kawika motored his boat to Eureka to dive some of California's far northern reefs. He put out to sea by himself and was never seen again. (Continued on page 8) 7 Volume 6 Number 6 June 2008 Videolights First of all, I’ll pass on what the judges had to say about this year’s competition: 2008 Underwater Images Competition Roger Roth “In our work, we spend a lot of time underwater looking for unusual or oddball images and behaviors. Our exposure to what other underwater photographers are shooting is pretty much limited to photographs published in the mainstream dive magazines. The multitude of entries in this year’s competition offered us a dramatic insight into how significantly underwater photography has matured in recent years. The images, whether of seascapes, divers, or marine life, consistently expressed the photographers’ enlightened understanding of their subject matter. Most gratifying, the new entrants are right on track, many are only a dive trip away from distinction. Choosing winners from amongst so many excellent choices was a challenging but delightful task.” As the international, non-profit Underwater Images Photo/Video Competition comes to a close, I wanted to share with everyone how the competition fared and more importantly what the judges thought about the entries. This year, we received 50% more entries than any other year (most seemed to come in the last 2-3 weeks). The entries came from 20 different states in the United States and 25 different countries around the world. As always, prizes are set before the judging according to the retail value of the prize donations and the number of entrants in each category. Proceeds from this competition are donated to numerous nonprofit organizations that support marine conservation and preservation as well as educational scholarships. Our beneficiaries are listed on the home page of our website (www.uwimages.org). (Continued on page 9) This year’s judges were Ned and Anna DeLoach and Eric Riesch. Photo: Clinton Bauder, Winner, Kawika Chetron Memorial Award 2008 California Beach Dive Competition: Kawika Chetron Memorial Award (Continued from page 7) A group of friends and family wanted to do something in Kawika's memory and approached NCUPS about hosting a onetime memorial award at the California Beach Dive Photo Competition, where Kawika had been a frequent competitor; and often a winner. They raised funds to purchase the prize for the award and the funds left over will be donated in his name to the Reef Environmental Education Foundation, www.reef.org, a marine environmental organization that he was involved in. Eric Riesch is photo editor and managing director of New World Publications. For the past 15 years he has managed the cataloging, retouching and photo placement of the marine life identification books including Reef Fish Identification – Tropical Pacific which includes more than 2500 images. His photographic images have appeared in several books and magazines. The California Beach Dive Photo Competition entrants were allowed to submit one additional photograph to be judged for the Kawkia Chetron Memorial Award. How fitting it was for the winner to be one of Kawika good friends, Clinton Bauder. Clinton received a charter for two with Cypress Charters. We are sure Kawika would be pleased. Special thanks to those who donated the funds for the award and to Melissa Litwicki for organizing the memorial award. Volume 6 Number 6 June 2008 8 Northern California Underwater Photography Society Monthly Newsletter Videolights (Continued from page 8) We continued this discussion remarking that entrants could do the same thing with their own digital shots as well to choose their best shots to enter into competitions like this. All they would have to do is turn their shots 180 degrees in Photoshop, then look at a file with all the thumbnails that are now upside down. The judging process took about 8-10 hours of their volunteered time and consisted of going through thumbnails on a large computer screen one by one in each category. In the first round, the judges quickly culled about 50% of the entries that didn’t stand out. They also paid attention to their own breathless gasps that they sometimes let out when an awesome shot came up on the computer, probably indicating that shot would end up as a finalist. After the judging and looking at the winners, they all discussed these shots and admitted that their preferences as this year’s judging team seemed to center around portrait and behavior shots. Interestingly enough, the Best of Show was highly contested with another first place picture for a good 15 minutes or more, and was finally awarded to “Trust” by Cor Bosman of Amsterdam, Netherlands because the judges rarely, if ever see a lizardfish with its mouth that wide open; so rarity came into play on that choice. Then a finer culling process took place in the next 2-4 rounds until they narrowed numbers down to about 12 in each category. This is when their job got harder and everyone discussed pros and cons of each shot more carefully. They had to decide which shots were composed better, which ones told a story, which ones were cropped better, and depths of field and focus was considered also. Many shots that were entered and may not have won a prize this year were surely worthy of a prize and should be entered in this and other competitions in the future. (A fairly comprehensive list of competitions world-wide can be found on the Underwater Images website.) Entrants should keep in mind that various judging teams look for different things each time they judge competitions like this. And even the same judging team could look for something different on a different day. Any photograph or video that ended up in the final rounds were obviously world-class quality, and choosing between them had to get picky. At this point in the judging, any or all of the shots merited winning a prize, which is why the Underwater Images board has always tried to have at least some kind of small token prize for Honorable Mention winners. (I will mention here that the judges saw a number of shots throughout the process that they would have liked to have in their own portfolios!) Photos: Top-left: “Squadron” - Ralph Oberlander, Dover, New Hampshire USA - 1st Place, The judges were surely impressed with the quality of images they viewed. For me, it was also refreshing to see some new names emerge in the winners’ list and I hope to see more of those photographers’ shots in years to come. Sea Ya!
