houses have become sex
and drug dens in eSikhaleni.
Residents have raised
concerns about properties
being used as an assembly location for criminals
in Ward 16 behind the
Department of Education
Mtunzini Circuit building
next to Thengeduze Tavern.
According to community
members, criminals as well
as school teens use these
buildings to consume alcohol, have sex and smoke
drugs such as whoonga
and dagga.
‘These buildings have become a big problem in this
community, and a hiding
place place for thieves.
I was robbed and my
purse was found in one
of these houses. Something has to be done,’ said
homeowner
and ward committee member, Lungile Cele.
According to Ward 16
Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson
Muzobanzi Ntuli, residents constantly report
criminal activity to
the police and the
City of uMhlathuze,
however,
nothing has been done.
‘It’s been years now and
the problem is escalating.
School pupils bunk school
and meet there to have
sex and do drugs. Daily I
receive reports from
community members about
their concerns. Residents
are not safe - they are
mugged as they pass
by and raped in the
same buildings,’ said
Ntuli.
In January, a
four-year-old
boy, walking past the
abandoned
houses, was
reportedly
grabbed
and raped.
The
incident
angered residents and they
have demanded the
structures to be demolished.
However, according to
Ward 16 Councillor,
Nonhlahla Cele, these
houses are not the municipality’s property and a
written consent from
owners is required before
any action can be taken.
‘Even though we receive
numerous reports about
criminal activities on the
properties, it is against
the law to demolish them
without the owners’ permission.
‘These houses were built
on a wetland, which made
it difficult for the municipality to provide them
with services, so they were
left abandoned,’ said Cele.

A Mtunzini man will spend the rest of his
life behind bars after repeatedly raping a
minor.
The Empangeni Regional Court on Friday sentenced Richard Babane Shandu,
50, to two 20-year prison terms for two
counts of rape.
The incidents were uncovered when
the mother of the 10-year-old victim
asked her daughter to undergo a virginity test in the Obanjeni area, Mtunzini,
but the child refused.

Langa welcomed the sentence.
‘We thank the parents for their cooperation in reporting the matter to the police
and not to take the law into their hands.
This will send a strong message to other
culprits, that you cannot escape the long

camped in Empangeni.
The teens come together
every year to build relationships
as well as to receive practical
and spiritual input that equips
them for life.
They also share God’s love in
the community of Empangeni,
Richards Bay and surrounding areas by tackling various
projects or outreaches that are
organised and run by the local
churches – a work of love.

economy, so our budgets
are becoming tighter and
tighter because of all the
increases - except our
salaries.
Trying to be in line with
our budgets we are looking for bargains and cheap
prices, many times it is a
lose, instead of win situation.
I had an experience about
three weeks ago with a
shop in Richards Bay.
I bought an electronic cigarette with battery charger
so as to stop smoking at a
price of R220.
After 10 days the battery
charger packed up. I went
to the shop and showed
my receipt of purchase and
explained the problem.
The lady behind the
counter said they couldn’t
replace it because the
seven-day guarantee had
expired.
No-one had told me there
was only a seven-day guarantee. There was only an
A4 handwritten paper that
said NO REFUNDS.
I requested to see the
manager and she told me
he was not in.
I went downstairs and
asked another lady if I
could see the manager, she
took me to him.
I explained my situation and he replaced the
charger for me - the price
was R20.
After about three weeks
one of the electronic cigarette rechargeable batteries
packed up.
I went back to the shop
to see the manager and
showed him the battery
had packed up.
His reply to me was they
only give seven-days’
guarantee.
Then I showed him on
the guarantee manual of
the supplier that a 60-day
guarantee was given.
He said his shop is only
giving a seven-day guarantee.
If I knew this was only a
seven-day guarantee shop
I wouldn’t have bought
there and will definitely not
be shopping there again.

PRISONERS showcased their acting skills
during the Life After Prison Play competition
at Qalakabusha Correctional Service Centre
in Empangeni on Wednesday.
Eight groups from various correctional
centres entertained and educated an
enthusiastic audience - conveying a strong
positive message about rehabilitation.
Their stories were about the possibility of
life after prison, and how they can use their
experiences to change people’s lives.
After showcasing their skills and receiving
a standing ovation, Qalakabusha Juvenile
Centre scooped the first prize.
The competition was one of North Coast
Group community initiatives, aimed at
uplifting people’s lives.

hen a car maker lists ‘windscreen’ as ‘standard’ in a spec
sheet, you must know that you
are shopping in the toilet paper section
of the motoring supermarket.
But one ply is better than no ply,
and cheap wheels are better than no
wheels.
So, let’s take a look at how SA’s six
lowest priced cars measure up against
each other...
Chery QQ3
At R93 995 the Chery QQ3, 0.8TE is
SA’s cheapest car.
The panda bear headlights give
the car an outdated look, but the
main drawback must be the 800cc,

Such a small engine makes the car
unsuitable for everything but short trips
in town.
The QQ3 0.8TE does not come with an
air-con but does have a radio/CD/MP3
player, USB port as well as an SD card
slot.
It not the safest car on the road, having no ABS brakes or airbags.
Chery sells its QQ3s with a threeyear/100 000km warranty, but a service
plan is optional.
The sweeter Chery might be the top
of the range 1.1-litre TXE model which
sells for R114 995 and comes with
more standard features than your average German luxury sedan.
Being Chinese, resale value and technical backup might be a problem.
Datsun Go
At R104 900 for the base model Go,
this car is also very affordable and has
become quite popular among budget
buyers.
Although not the prettiest car on the
road, the look is fairly modern.
The Go runs a decent sized 1.2-litre
engine, but 50kW and 104Nm give the
impression that it is under-powered.
An air-con is standard spec but you
will have to fit an after market radio to
get some vibes while on the go.
ABS brakes and airbags are missing
from the base model.
The Datsun Go comes with a threeyear/100 000km warranty and being backed by Nissan is a huge plus
because of a countrywide dealership
network.
Add a little extra money and get a lot
more convenience and safety features
in the top spec model which is still affordable at R119 900.
FAW V2
Another cheapie from China is the FAW
V2.
The base model sells for R114 995
and is really well specced.
Although the car lacks an up-to-date
exterior design, it has air-con, a radio/
CD/MP3 player with USB port, remote
central locking, fog lights and electric
windows and side mirrors.
FAW has even fitted the V2 with
Suzuki Celerio
Chery QQ3
alloy wheels.
Safety features include ABS and EBD,
dual airbags and LED brake lights.
Driving the budget hatch is a fourcylinder engine which is rated at 67kW
and 120Nm.
The FAW V2 #Like model brings 15inch wheels to the party and, listen
to this, Bluetooth and Satnav for only
R124 995!
air-con worth mentioning, however
Suzuki gave the car ABS and dual front
airbags.
Being Japanese, build quality and
resale value are good, but Suzuki’s
dealer network is still somewhat limited
in SA.
A higher spec Celerio model will set
you back R142 700.
Tata Indica
This Indian budget hatch starts at
R116 995 for the LGi version.
It has an aged look and very few convenience features.
To fill the spec sheet with something
the maker listed a five-speed wiper
system and a cabin light.
You also get an air-con, but there is
no radio, ABS or airbags in this car.
Under the bonnet is a 1.4-litre engine
which Tata says is good for 55kW and
110Nm.
Tata has been so kind to add a twoyear/45 000km service plan with the
three-year/100 000km warranty.
An LGi Sport version - R120 995 adds electric windows to the bag, but
still no audio system.
Tata SA’s dealership network is thinly
stretched.
Suzuki Celerio MT
This budget Japanese hatch comes
into the market at R126 300 for the
base model.
It is quite new on the market and
sports a modern front end, but the
overall look is somewhat boxy.
The engine, a three-cylinder unit
which delivers 50kW and 90Nm, has a
reputation for being extremely reliable,
but it lacks serious power when taken
on the open road.
In the convenience department the
Celerio scores very low with only the

Tata Indica
FAW V2
Kia Picanto
At R129 995 the Picanto 1.0 LS is the
most expensive but the best looking
with a very modern shape.
The engine is Kia’s faithful three-cylinder which delivers 51kW and 94Nm.
Those figures are more suitable for
urban driving, but the car should be
good for the occasional Durban run.
An air-con is standard but that’s
about it as far as standard features are
concerned.
The car does without ABS brakes, but
the driver gets an airbag.
Kia has an established dealer network
in SA and the cars keep their value to a
fair extent.
The budget winner is...
Spec for spec the FAW V2 stands
out, but a few things bother:
Being from that land where the
people like eating strange food
served on a bed of rice and dripping
with sweet and sour sauce, resale
value and technical backup are a
concern.
If these two issues can be addressed then the V2 will be my first
choice, but until then I will have to
go with the Datsun.
Although lacking in spec and
safety, build quality is good and it
has a decent engine.
Also, with Nissan’s established
dealer network, services and parts
should be easy to come by.

Empangeni sneak
bonus point win
EMPANGENI could count themselves very lucky to get away
with a 41-28 win over Unizul in
their Weber Cup fixture played
at Mick Kelly Park on Friday
evening.
The home side came out, playing their usual structured game
which resulted in 19-7 half time
lead.
David de Villiers’ men produced slick ball handling, quick
clean ball at the breakdown
point, accurate kicking and
great set pieces.
Victor Campher, Razor Msane
and Clinton Woodley all crossed
the chalk line for Empangeni,
with scrumhalf Dirkie de Waal
nailing two conversions.
Wandile Vezi dotted down for
the students with Andile Myeni
converting.
Empangeni radiated with confidence and decided to change
their style of play, converting to
a loose running game.
This benefited the Unizul outfit,
who were faster and fitter than
the home team.
This resulted in a huge comeback from the visiting side, with
the scoreboard reading 28-19
to Unizul.
Captain Myeni
dotted down first
in the second half
for the visitors,
followed by Thulani Khumalo and
Sandile Mngathi.
Myeni kicked
two conversions for his
sides’ 28
points.
Empangeni front
rower Hugo
Myburgh
crashed over
in the corner to
pull the game
back to 28-24 to
Unizul.
With time ticking away and the
Empangeni lads looking tired
and playing scrappy rugby, an
upset result was definitely on
the cards.
But with three lucky tries in 10
minutes from the Empangeni
outfit, Empangeni managed to
maintain their unbeaten record
at home.

smash golf day

DESPITE the chilly weather conditions
which included icy winds and patchy
rainfall, golfers still made their way
to the Empangeni Country Club to
participate in the annual Empangeni
Rugby Football Club golf day on
Saturday.
Participants followed a 4 Ball Better
Ball Stableford format over 18 holes.
The duo of Willie van Rooyen (18
handicap) and Victor Campher (12
handicap) proved lethal, when the two
won the day after carding 46 points.

Campher was on fire, with a handful
of birdies and pars during his round of
77.
The two walked away with a weed
eater and a two night stay at the
Umfolozi Casino Resort.
Jors Danhauser and Carel Swart tied
with JC Klaasen and Andy Anderson
for second place after both pairs
carded 44 points.
Gerrit Dekker and Clyde Watson filled
up the podium places in third with 42
points.
All proceeds raised on the day went
towards the club for certain projects.
David de Villiers was caught driving around the 7th in search of his ball
Darts tournament in the Bay
Woodpeckers Sports
Club (Mondi) at 2pm.
