MAPATHON 2016 Just a reminder that term three marks the start of our annual school fundraiser. The Factathon this year has a geography theme and is appropriately called the Mapathon. This is a Friends of CBS fundraiser that has the potential to bring in over $20,000 for the school. This year the money will go directly to funding the school’s hall refurbishment. If every child raises only $25.00 we will exceed our target this year. On the first day back of next term expect to receive three notices 1. Mapathon instructions 2. Sponsorship recording form 3. Your child’s questions AN IMPORTANT NOTICE RE THE TIQBIZ UPGRADE WENT HOME ON FRIDAY LAST WEEK. IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT PLEASE CHECK SCHOOLBAGS! School CLOSED this Friday 8 July NUMBER 21 04 July 2016 Mathlete of the Week Congratulations to Edison Yang from Year 6 Blue. You are the Mathlete of the Week! The Mathlete of the Week is the top student in the school who has mastered the most concepts in Mathletics. Library Books Please could you ensure your children return any overdue library books before the end of term. This would be a good opportunity to get some books for holiday reading too. Jammies in June (and July!) Mufti Day On Wednesday 6 July Campbells Bay School is having a Pyjama Mufti Day. This is to promote ’Jammies in June/July’. On Wednesday, children can wear their pyjamas to school (!) if they bring a new pair of flannelette pyjamas or a ($2) gold coin donation. Please note: It is not compulsory to wear pyjamas! These will be donated to the Middlemore Foundation so they can donate the pyjamas to those children who need them to help keep them cozy warm in winter. Thank you for supporting our ‘Not Self But Service’ venture. Sandra Stott Not Self But Service Coordinator for CBS Muddy Clothes As the wet weather continues, please remember to put a spare set of school uniform in your child’s bag. The office has limited spares they can change children in to if they happen to slip in the mud! Term Two Dates Please note the school is closed on the following date this term: Friday 8 July: Teacher Only Day. We are having a professional development day at CBS with staff from Milford School and Mairangi Bay School also attending. Please note we will still be working the required number of school days this year! It just means we work a little longer in December. Hence, the term finishes for students on Thursday 7 July. Absences If your child is going to be absent please let the school office know either by emailing safetycheck@campbellsbay. school.nz or by using the Tiqbiz app. For extended holidays please email John McGowan for approval on: [email protected] [email protected] This is a Ministry of Education requirement. Please do not just email class teachers. Given the time of year, it is really important to let the office know if your child is going to be absent. Given the size of the school it is very time consuming to phone each parent who has forgotten! NUMBER 21 04 July 2016 Bus Bay Closed on Thursday and Principal Rides the Morning 042 Bus The student Travelwise team has announced the closure of the Bus Bay on Thursday morning in attempt to get more students walking to school or, at least, walking part of the way to school having been dropped off in a legal and safe manner away from the school. To encourage the use of the morning 042 to get to school I will be on the bus on Thursday from the start of the bus route opposite the Milford Marina to school. Details of the bus route can be seen below. John McGowan. FOCBS will collect 20% of the sale price as a fundraiser for the benefit of the school. After each sale, we will pay you 80% of the sales price in cash for the items and/or return your unsold items. The cash and unsold items will be available at the school office within 2 weeks of the sale. We aim to price donated good quality uniforms at half the price of new uniforms. Please drop off donated uniforms at the school office, ideally marking the bag donated. Queries to Becca Hammond - email – [email protected] / text 021 129 5273 Thank you - Tēnā Koutou The CBS Book Week Committee is already furiously working on making the 2016 Book Week bigger and better than previous years. More details will emerge in term three but in the meantime for all you Book Lovers: Did you know Andy Griffiths is coming to NZ in September? Here is an opportunity to go and listen to him at Auckland Girls Grammar. Go to http://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2016/andy-griffiths-and-the-78-story-treehouse/auckland/newton for more details. NUMBER 21 04 July 2016 Welcome Back Mr Millward Duncan Millward, deputy principal at CBS until 2013, made a very welcome visit to the school on Friday. Now a deputy principal at the European International School in Taipei, Duncan and his family are spending their summer holiday with family and friends in Auckland before returning to Taipei to commence the new school year. Duncan reported the family are in fine spirits and are enjoying the international school lifestyle while still planning to return to Auckland. Rangitoto College Prime Minister’s Supreme Award for Governance went to.................................. the Board of Trustees at Rangitoto College at the recent Prime Ministers’ Education Awards presented on 13 June at a ceremony held at the Auckland Museum. Our connection with the Rangitoto College Board is very real as Chris Davis, (second from right) the recent chairperson of the Rangitoto Board, was also a chairperson of the Campbells Bay School Board of Trustees. I guess you could say, he shared at Rangitoto what he learned at CBS! Who wears it better?? Just a little light humour in the school office on a cold and miserable day! We wondered if Elton John had made a surprise visit – maybe not!! NUMBER 21 04 July 2016 Education Out Of School A parent of CBS has written a thoughtful piece for a conservation blog site and, having read it, I think it deserves publication as part of our newsletter. The link to the article is below. The narrative reminds readers that education happens in and out of school and ‘creating passion in children’ is an essential role for every person involved with children. The article is a timely reminder that parents/whanau/friends all have an incredibly important role to play in the education of our children and while school has an essential role to play we should never forget the fantastic opportunities children have to learn out of school. While the article gives the example of actually swimming with whale sharks, rather than simply reading about them or viewing them on videos, there are limitless opportunities for learning opportunities to happen out of school. This can be as simple as splashing along in puddles, something that is easy to do at this time of the year, while talking about the science that lies behind why the water is being displaced to talking about anything at all. Later in the year as part of Book Week we hope to have a father and daughter team come to speak about the books and videos about swimming with marine life along our coast line. As a school, we endorse and embrace parents/whanau making the most of learning opportunities. If this involves time away from school please email me in advance so the absence can be recorded for our safety check programme. http://birdsheadseascape.com/diving/bhss-chief-scientist-takes-his-children-out-of-school-for-a-whale-shark-holiday-byarnaz-mehta/ CHESS CLUB IN TERM 3 Weekly chess classes restart on 26 July in room 29 on Tuesday lunchtimes. Teams comprised of five girls and five boys from years five and six. Twenty-six schools from Devonport to Helensville and as far as Warkworth were competing for the grand prize of top school, who win an all-expenses paid trip to Wellington to represent North Harbour at the National Rippa Rugby Tournament. Our team of ten players fought hard against some very talented and competitive teams, in torrential rain at times, to finish top of their pool. The team then advanced to the knock out rounds playing defending champions Willow Park in the quarter finals. CBS was 3-2 down at half time. The team focused hard on playing as a team and put in every ounce of effort, managing to take out the win 4-3 to move into the semi-final round. In the semi-final round we came up against St Josephs but were beaten 3-1. St Josephs went on to end the day as overall winners. This is the first time ever that a CBS team has made it out of pool play and into the play offs. Congratulations to Toby Douglas, Mairav Rajput, Cameron Maunder, James Charlesworth, Xavier Gordon, Ruby Luxton, Danielle Pattimore, Sienna Rugg, Charlie Twose and Jessie Jamieson for the 100% effort, amazing team work and positive attitude that they brought to the day. You did your school proud. Thank you to everyone who came out in the less than ideal weather conditions to support the team. Treasurer Needed for Lake Pupuke Waterwise The Lake Pupuke Waterwise needs a committee member who will take the role of treasurer. There are approximately four committee meetings per year, the club is in good financial health and is not only very well run but also provides a wonderful opportunity to help teach children basic seamanship skills. There are only 5-10 transactions a month, the majority of which are by automatic bank payment and so requires only elementary book-keeping skills as the processes are well set up. The outgoing treasurer will be happy to provide a good handover until you are up and running. If you are interested please email Sheryl Rogers on [email protected] Campbells Bay Students Shine at North Island Synchro Champs Campbells Bay School can be extremely proud of their students, Georgia Fraser-Mackenzie, Maria Lee and Vanessa Burmeister who competed at the North Island Synchronised Swimming Championships held in Auckland this weekend.
