The issue that most o7en confuses the handler and/or trainer in his/her effort to train centers itself around one important ques&on. In our effort to train our canine, are we really training or tes3ng our partner? This very important ques&on is o7en over looked, because most handlers believe that they are training every &me they work their dog and therefore have no reason to ask themselves that ques&on. (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1)As a trainer, allowing the handler to know where the finds are and allowing a handler to make mistakes without guidance and immediate correc&ve ac&on, is TESTING and NOT training. Trainers that allow a handler to train without being totally focused is another common failure and in my book, this prac&ce is neither training nor tes&ng. A handler’s best tool in the toolbox is his ability to maintain total focus whether he is training or tes&ng, his canine depends on it as much as the handler depends on the dog’s ability to detect the odor. The canine can only be as good as the handler’s focus allows him to be. Some examples of training verses tes&ng are as follows:
1. If the trainer’s intention is to test a passive dog on an exact <inal response and the desire is for the canine to work to source as close as possible, when the JND is detected, the handler needs to be advised of the source so [2]
that the handler can take the correct action to achieve the desired <inal response in order for it to be considered training.
2. In the same scenario, if JND is detected and the handler allows the dog to sit away from the source, rewards the dog, and the handler is advised of the source after, it would be considered testing.
3. If a trainer has the handler run an uncontrolled track where the handler follows the dog throughout the track until completion where mistakes were observed, but there was no corrective action given, it would be considered testing.
In conclusion, we must be able to know the difference between training and testing to be able to maintain and/or improve our canine performance. NOT knowing the difference will confuse both the handler and the canine and in time the canine’s performance will begin to deteriorate. Lets TRAIN when we are training and TEST when we are testing and always know the difference. That’s my 2 cents ;-‐)

The suspect fled into a neighborhood and was thought to be hiding. I began tracking from the last known locaEon of cross tracks leH by other officers who walked the area prior to my arrival. We tracked about 150 yards where Samber located the suspect laying down hiding in a back yard between a storage shed and a fence with a large piece of plywood over his body. The suspect refused to follow commands and would not surrender. K9 Samber was deployed, he jumped the fence and apprehended the suspect. K9 Samber conEnued to engage even though the suspect was combaEve and struck him in the neck. K9 Samber dragged the suspect to the ground where he was eventually placed under arrest.

K9 Officer Toby Walker:
On 09-19-10 just after midnight, I
conducted a traffic stop where the driver
was arrested for No Driver License, Upon
asking the passenger to step out, I observed
loose marijuana residue on his clothing.
The passenger was detained and after

car. The driver laughed then stated that if I
wanted I could let my dog out and allow
him to get next to the car, but to get inside
I needed a search warrant. I then explained
to him my dog will scratch his car if he
alerts, but the driver stated i’m not going
inside of his car, his mother will get mad. I
then took my k9 partner out and began to
sweep the thugs vehicle. Well, Lando
alerted on the passenger door seam and
after further search w/o a warrant I located
a small amount of loose marijuana. The
passenger ate the majority of it, but I got
enough to charge the driver with
possession of marijuana. I then let my dog
scratch his car up so that I could reward
him for all of his hard work. Lando was
happy, I was happy. The driver got his
citation, and was told he would be getting
a subpoena in the mail to go to court for
his charge of Possession of Marijuana. He

suspects stop, I then saw two of my guys,
one with AR15 pointed at the passenger.
My other guy had the driver, who was not
cooperating to commands. My guy had to
grab the driver, who refused to give up his
hands. Due to the severity of the crime and
the fact that it involved a gun, which has
not been located yet, I allowed k9 Lando to
engage the suspect, with an apprehension
to the right leg (thigh) area. The suspect
quickly changed his mind and gave up his
hands and complied with officers. Theres
no doubt about what my Roger Abshire K9
will do.
28 kilos of powder cocaine were recovered
during a vehicle search in which K9
Twister and I received a positive odor
response on. The 28 kilos totaled 61.6
pounds of cocaine with a street value of
$3,000.800. There was no local arrest on
this case due to I.C.E. making an arrest on
the suspect in Texas prior to this search.
There was a hidden compartment behind
the rear bumper and under the back seat of
the vehicle where the kilos were stuffed
into. This search took a while to find the
compartment after we removed a towing
hitch and the rear bumper cover of the
vehicle.
On 10-17-10 at approximately 1400 hours,
I was patrolling the bypass, when I
observed a small vehicle with three white
male subjects. The subjects would not look
at me, when I got on the side of them, and
had slowed down. I then got in front and
slowed down to 30 in a 45 mph zone, and
they would not pass me. Finally when they
did pass me, they stopped at a red light,
where I was able to see an expired MVI.
Conducted a traffic stop, and upon
speaking to the driver, I could see
marijuana stuck to his chin. Received
permission to search, located 1/4 ounce of
marijuana, that the back passenger had and
also the marijuana blunt they were
smoking in the coke cup they were
drinking. The driver had licked the blunt
paper, to roll the blunt and didn’t realize
marijuana will fall and stick to your wet

There are very few (if any) drugs out there that can claim 100% efficacy. Fortunately, the heartworm preventa&ves historically did a great job of preven&ng heartworm disease(the percep&on was 100%) for the past 20+ years. All of the current heartworm preventa&ves are from a class of an&bio&cs called macrocyclic lactones. This is important to understand because they all basically work the same way and they are all incredibly effec&ve at preven&ng heartworms. The cases of perceived lack of efficacy of the preventa&ves are typically only seen in the Mississippi delta area. Researchers and drug companies are aware of this phenomenon and are doing research to figure out why this is occurring. The posi&ve cases have been noted in every type of heartworm preventa&ve. Since such a small percentage of heartworms are actually heartworm preventa&ves that contract heartworm disease is very small.
