For D.
Problem is, I can’t. My friend D. died last week.
D.’s been struggling for years. And, well, he just couldn’t struggle any longer.
And I’ve delayed too long trying to find the words to say at his service. I consider myself a
seasoned performer, but the responsibility of paying him proper tribute scares me to death.
Oh! Maybe I should find another way to say that.
Write of Way
I guess it would be easier to write about something else today.
But, wait, D. would have laughed. And that’s what matters.
So I’m going to sit down and tell a story about one of my favorite dance friends.
The last time I saw him, he’d been working on a piece to set on a company somewhere in
California. Santa Cruz, I think he said. I mostly remember the look in his eyes. A look that
refuses to remember how difficult setting a piece is because we are more passionate about the
process of choreography than performance. We used to joke that being a choreographer is like
giving birth for other “girls.” If we remembered the pain, we’d never go near a studio again.
Anyway, after he left, I could have called to see how things were going, but it was more
fun to speculate, and hear about it later, once we were sitting in our favorite café, cupping
a glass of Pinot Noir, when everything he said was a little more accentuated and a little less
exciting than what he’d actually been through. Which, of course, is the point of Pinot Noir.
“Do you remember the year we took our bows to ‘I Want to Dance with Somebody’?” I said to D.
He winced, clearly still troubled by what happened to Whitney Houston in the end. “Never
bring that up again.”
Anyway, here’s what I need to say: When D. performed a solo, he had the heart and the
energy to make his audience feel what was percolating not just inside him, but inside them.
To watch D. perform was like eyeing a natural phenomenon.
“You’re amazing!” I yelled to him once, over the roar of the audience. I was waiting in the
wings, standing there in my Capezio Camisole Empire Dress, trying not to bump into him
as he came flying off stage. But there was no way to avoid him, his enthusiasm was that big.
“I know!,” he shouted back, and then he ran back out to take another bow.
He was on fire that night.
And giving so much, but not overdoing, is a difficult balance. Most of us have to fight
against presenting ourselves a little shyly on opening night, feeling too nervous to
really go for it. But from the moment the lights came up, D. would absolutely grab you.
And the golden rule of performance is that it has to grab you.
Like me, dancing was just the biggest part of the image D. had of himself from the
very beginning.
We argued about costuming, never important to D. It’s not what he wants people to focus on.
“I’m trying to hide our flaws,” I said, “costuming will help knit the dropped stitches
together.”
“No it won’t,” he snapped back. “A gussied up mistake is still a mistake, angel.”
One other thing comes to mind: What D. and I shared was being wholly involved in, and
fascinated by, our work, a luxury not everyone can boast.
And there are days I like to imagine what this world would be like if everyone was able to
work this way.
Even for just one stage of their life.

Terra Sublime
Painted works represent Fred Lisaius’
personal journey exploring man’s relationship
to the natural world, and to one another.
His work explores topics like community,
diversity, harmony, and change all within a
single composition. Lisaius often relies on
iconic and symbolic imagery like trees, birds
and flowers to convey his message, while
keeping the imagery simple and naive.
Continuing exhibits include selections
from the Permanent Collection and artworks
on loan, “Heikki Seppa: Master Metalsmith,”
and “You Can Judge a Book by its Cover.”
Mextacy
Former Seattleite John Hillmer’s show
of paintings and prints reflects and celebrates
his many years travelling to and from Mexico.
A sense of play, myth, music, poetry, the rich
natural world, and an abiding spirituality are
all part of the mix. Improvised works that
cross a neighborly border between graphic
and fine art. Reception: Friday, September

Ford Crull is fascinated by the power
of symbols. Wings, crosses, and geometric
forms are part of a unique visual vocabulary
consistent across the paintings. Words, in the
form of cryptic fleeting phrases, also animate
Crull’s paintings. These suggest thoughts
without completing them, while bold colors
executed with expressive brush strokes imbue
the work with emotion. Reception:

Ann Mallory believes art to be a process,
not a product. For her this process begins in
nature, where she finds inspiration in things
that we may typically not see—seeds, insect
casings, and cocoons. These microcosmic
elements are transformed into much large
contemplative sculptures on a potter’s wheel.

Reilly Jensen has always been fascinated
with the mechanical world. This fascination
becomes obsessive in her latest body of
work—intricately detailed drawings of
gears, pipes, and other machine parts.
While referential of childhood memories,
Jensen’s work is full of sharp wit and
social commentary, being more about
p e o p l e t h a n the machines depicted.

Smoke Signals
Carolyn Hopkins presents new work
made during her residency on Blue Lake in
Central Oregon. Much like the depth of the
lake, “Smoke Signals” is an investigation
into both t h e a r t i s t ’s s u b c o n s c i o u s
relationship with this landscape as well as
the history of this region of Oregon where
Hopkins spent her childhood. Reception:
First Thursday, July 3, 5-8 P.M.
Sit Calm
Conflating personal history with
collective memory, Curtis Erlinger’s
mixed-media work in “Sit Calm” is a
temporal displacement, drawing attention

simultaneously retracing memory while
resisting nostalgia. The attempt to put
everything in its right place only highlights
the inability to do so. Reception: First
