More and more people would mention that they saw my ad in the Tidewater Trader. Not once did I ever get feedback from customers about my previous advertising. I cancelled my ads with all of the other papers and made my ads in Tidewater Trader larger. I started a new branch of business that would not be what it is today if it were not for Tidewater Trader. The staff does a great job with all of our ads.” Thank you sincerely, Bob Schauber of Chesapeake Family Flooring located in Chestertown, MD 410-778-3181 A nonprofit membership organization for helping residents stay in their homes as they grow older Welcoming New Patients C hester River Health System is proud to announce the addition of Dr. William Gai, board certified oncologist, to the medical staff. She reached for the alarm clock, shut it off and then reached for her denture cup, where she always kept her teeth. But it was not there! Her nightmare was just beginning. She jumped out of bed and started looking everywhere for those precious teeth. She pulled open all the drawers, stripped the bed, checked under the dresser, under the bed, in the bathroom but they were not anywhere! What would she do now? She could not go to work in this condition and there’s no way she would let her friends see her like this. Suddenly it came to her, an ad she had seen recently about a dentist who does one-day dentures in Baltimore. She ran into the kitchen and found the ad in the old newspaper pile. Thank goodness the ad was there! It was still too early to call but she went online to look at the website, the DentureDoctor.com. Mary liked what she saw, especially the personal attention and the price was certainly unbeatable. Best of all, she could have her teeth by tonight! After calling in sick for work, she jumped into the car and headed for Pikesville. Mary was just about there when she called and spoke to Sharon, the receptionist. She was assured that she would be seen and her teeth could be ready that day. Happy Ending. Mary had her teeth for dinner that night. But it is still a mystery about the old ones? Maybe Smokey, her dog, could give us a hint? Dr. Chaim Dworkin is the Denture Doctor. He has been practicing general dentistry for 28 years. His Pikesville office has been open since December 1996 and has been offering one-day denture service for 8 years. Our practice family is made up of Cheryl our office manager, Sharon our receptionist, Audrey our dental assistant, Lana our hygienist and Henry and Davlat our two denture lab techs. We have seen people from just about every nationality, all walks of life, some can’t even talk for themselves. But our goal is to help them look as good as they can. We also help them function so they can eat, talk, smile and feel good about themselves. We can’t do miracles, but it would sure be helpful if we could. We do our best to help everyone get what they need and want at a reasonable price and in an unbelievably short time. More than half of our new patients come to us as referrals from previous patients. That’s a good measure of our patient’s level of satisfaction. “THE DENTURE DOCTOR” Call Dr. Chaim Dworkin 410-602-2070 Commerce Center • 1777 Reisterstown Road, Suite 202-W, Pikesville, MD Located next to Beltway (I-695) exit 20 www.thedenturedoctor.com Care Credit™ Tidewater Trader February 24, 2011 Page 22 Worship Services at Shrewsbury Parish Church - Sun 7:30am & 10am; Wed 8am Morning Prayer; Misa Hispana Wed 7:30pm; Adult Ed, Sun School, Youth Groups; Kennedyville; Call 410-348-5944. February 24, 2011 Page 27 “Kent School has been such a positive influence on both of my children. When I drop off my children each day, I know that they will be safe and will be fully engaged in daily learning. Although the curriculum is not constrained by state standards, it easily teaches and surpasses those standards and more. The students who graduate from Kent School have learned to become strong writers, learned to speak another language, studied earth science, conducted experiments in biology, chemistry and physics, simulated historical events like the Lewis & Clark expedition, applied math concepts to practical applications, learned proper grammar, read great books and plays and were easily able to intelligently discuss them, written poetry and participated in daily physical education and exercise. The school has a wonderful after-school sports program that allows students to learn a sport and learn to be a part of a team. This is all done with the dedicated and engaged faculty and administration. My children have become students who love to learn.” – Current and Past Parent For more information, contact 410-778-4100, ext. 11 or [email protected] www.kentschool.org Kent School is committed to the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of race, color, national and/or ethnic origin. Tidewater Trader Reaches 30,000 Readers Weekly! Distributed to 3 Counties Locally Owned & Operated Kent School Fundraising Auction on April 9th Imagine a starlit night in Tuscany, a stroll through a piazza, and a terrific Italian dinner. That is the setting for Kent School’s 2011 fundraising auction. “Under the Tuscan Stars” will be held on Saturday, April 9th beginning at 6:30pm at Kent School. “Our annual auction is the single most important fundraising event for our school. Proceeds support our operating budget thus supporting every student and teacher here,” said Tricia Cammerzell, Director of Development. She continued, “The success of our auction is always dependent on the generosity of others, and we are sincerely grateful to all the donors, guests and bidders who make success possible. “ As in years past, “Under the Tuscan Stars” will include a silent and live auction. “There are some amazing things available like an original painting by Marc Castelli, a trip to Bachelor Gulch, the Ritz Carlton resort in Beaver Creek, Colorado, and a hot air balloon ride,” commented auction co-chair Ellen Conner. Other opportunities include tickets to professional sports games, autographed sports memorabilia, jewelry, gift certificates for restaurant and spa treatments. Conner continued, “The full catalog is on our website at www.kentschool.org/auction. It’s updated regularly as new donations come in.” Kent School is also offering a terrific raffle as part of the fundraising effort. Raffle ticket purchasers are eligible to win a $5,000 cash prize OR a free Kent School tuition for the 2011-2012 school year. Only 200 tickets will be sold so chances of winning are favorable. Each ticket is $100.00. Tickets for “Under the Tuscan Stars” are $75.00 each and include a sit-down dinner catered by The Fish Whistle’s Jeff Carroll and wine with dinner. Following dinner, guests can dance the night away to live music by The Real Geniuses. Sponsorship opportunities are available at different levels including a reserved table, open bar and admission to a preview cocktail party. For more information about any facet of Kent School’s auction, contact Tricia Cammerzell at 410-778-4100 ext. 12 or via email at [email protected]. February 24, 2011 Page 31 Be Prepared - We Card Everyone • Play Maryland Lottery • Accepting Credit Cards Getting Acquainted With Herbs The International Herb Association has chosen horseradish as the herb of the year 2011. “Armoracia rusticana Cruciferae”, a member of the mustard family, is known for its hot and healing qualities. Most people are familiar with the use of horseradish as a condiment and ingredient in many cocktail sauces and dips. What not as many people know is that Wasabi, the green sauce served with sushi, is made from Japanese horseradish, a different species. Horseradish contains Vitamin C and an antibiotic substance, but its main ingredient is mustard oil. The freshly grated root has been used for centuries as a stimulant, laxative, plaster, diuretic and antiseptic. Even Dr. Oz has given this humble root credence in his recommendation for its use in treating bladder and urinary tract infections. Horseradish is best grown from root cuttings and harvested in the fall before the ground freezes. This herb appears to be a hybrid rather than a natural species; it is therefore not readily grown from seed. It will tolerate most types of soil except light sand or heavy clay. Commercial crops are wintered over for the required root dormancy and followed by a long summer, thus enhancing growing conditions. Cuttings can be planted in March or April. Crowns will emerge from the ground and stems with dark green leaves will grow from one to three feet tall. Roots can be dug for a fall harvest and may be very deep in the ground, but any fragments left behind should give rise to more plants the following spring. If you are brave enough to grow horseradish and process it yourself you must know that it is best ground in a blender, not by scraping the bare root. Mix each cup of the gratings with one fourth cup vinegar and keep covered or it will lose its flavor. Home processed horseradish is a great accompaniment for roast beef but can also be mixed with other herbs such as dill for use as a mayonnaise, with catsup for seafood sauce, or with mustard for a hearty sandwich spread. First used in a London herbal publication in 1597 this herb’s distinctive name is thought to have come from the German word “Meerrettich” (sea radish). The word “meer” was mistaken for “Mahre” (an old horse), resulting in “horseradish”. Some will say it gained its name due to the strength of the plant, in both the garden and in its potency in culinary and medicinal uses. This herb has even been called “devil’s root”. Most of the United States’ crops are grown around St. Louis, Illinois in an area known as American bottoms, a Mississippi river basin which claims to be the “Horseradish Capital of the World”. The International Horseradish Festival is held in Collinsville, Illinois each May. You’ll be hearing more about this herb of the year and its Festivals not only in May but again in July, which has been designated National Horseradish Month. The event, supported by Wye Financial and Trust, will open the 26th season of the Chesapeake Chamber Music. Based in Easton, Maryland and known throughout the Eastern Shore Region and beyond as a premier organization bringing the best of chamber music, artists and events to the area each year. This year’s Gala, chaired by Jean McHale and her committee, will showcase Mardi Gras and the New Orleans jazz scene. John Jazz pianist, John Royen Royen, the incomparable stride piano artist and jazz historian long associated with the New Orleans Preservation Hall Jazz Band, will perform a concert, “All About Jazz,” at the Avalon Theatre. After the concert, Gala guests will proceed along Harrison Street, accompanied by music in a Jubilation Parade, to the Waterfowl Festival Building, transformed for the evening to a Bourbon Street, New Orleans marketplace and restaurant, where cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a lavish Mardi Gras dinner will be served by Gourmet By The Bay. Boutiques on Bourbon Street will offer silent auction treats and the live auction is sure to generate enthusiastic bidding for the luxurious offerings donated by our generous supporters. Proceeds from the Gala benefit the free and reduced price concerts, the free “Concerts in the Street” during the annual June CCM Festival, and the YouthReach programs: First Strings and Presto, which give a series of free violin lessons to grade school children in local schools. For information on the Gala, call 410-819-0380. Further information on the Gala, concert and concert ticket sales, can be found at www. ChesapeakeChamberMusic.org. United Way Closes in on Financial Goals United Way of Kent County is cautiously optimistic that it will achieve its goal for its annual fund raising drive at the end of its fiscal year in August, 2011. Barrie Frazier, Executive Director of the local United Way, announced that revenue during the first four months of the campaign added up to about 90% of its annual campaign goal. Frazier cautioned that “contributions typically tail off after the December 31st deadline for income tax charitable deductions. The bulk of receipts from this point on will come from Kent County supporters who contribute to United Way through payroll deduction plans”. Tom Beckett, United Way President noted that “We are deeply gratified that the people and businesses that support our local United Way are contributing more to assist their less fortunate neighbors, in spite of the poor economic climate.” “When we locked in our fiscal year budget for 2010-2011 late last spring, we alerted our 19 Member Agencies that United Way would have to trim support for their work this year,” continued Beckett. “Unfortunately, this cutback coincided with unprecedented demands for food, shelter and other critical services in Kent County. “Our United Way board decided to reduce expenses and emphasize funding of critical services, particularly those that are more dependent on community support and more heavily impacted by the effects of the recession”, explained Beckett. “However, the United Way board plans to allocate additional funds to our member agencies if the generous donations continue in 2011. To donate or to learn more about United Way and its member agencies, visit the website at www. unitedwayofkentcounty.org. Mail your contribution to: United Way of Kent County, PO Box 594, 819 High St., Chestertown, MD 21620. www.tidewatertrader.com Local Artists Receive Maryland State Arts Council 2011 Individual Artist Awards Governor Martin O’Malley recently announced that 93 Maryland artists have been selected to receive Individual Artist Awards (IAA) totaling $246,000 from the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. “The Individual Artist Awards program recognizes the talent and hard work of the State’s many individual artists and the vital role that they play in making our communities a better place to live and work,” said Governor O’Malley. Artists competed for $1,000, $3,000 and $6,000 awards in the following eight categories. Locally, three winners were chosen for awards, all in the poetry category. Meredith Davies Hadaway of Queen Anne’s County and Ellen Wise of Kent County each received $1,000 while Jehanne Irene Dubrow of Kent County received $6000. Congratulations! Out-of-state juries representing each artistic discipline reviewed a total of 407 applications anonymously before awarding the individual grants, which were determined solely on the basis of artistic merit. Artistic categories alternate each year. Applications for 2012 will be available in June at the MSAC website www.msac.org. Categories for 2012 are Crafts, Non-Classical Music Composition, NonClassical Music Solo Performance, Photography and Playwriting. Categories for 2013 include Fiction, Media/Digital/Electronic Arts, Painting, Solo Theater Performance and Works on Paper. For more information about the Maryland State Arts Council visit www.msac. org or call 410-767-6555 or TTY 1-800-735-2258. John Mann is Sultana Projects New Director of Educational Programs Sultana Projects is pleased to announce that starting March 1st, John Mann will join the fulltime staff of the organization as “Director of Educational Programs.” In this newly created position, Mann will be responsible for directing Sultana Projects’ new kayak programs and will also play an important role overseeing the organization’s classroom outreach programs and under-sail programs on the schooner Sultana. Mann comes to Sultana Projects from Echo Hill Outdoor School where for the past three years he has served as the Assistant Director of Operations and Residential Life. In 2007, John distinguished himself as one of 12 Sultana crew members who successfully completed a 121day, 1,700-mile reenactment of John Smith’s 1608 voyage as part of Sultana Projects’ Captain John Smith Four Hundred Project. “The addition of John Mann to Sultana Projects’ core educational staff is a critical step in the growth of the organization,” said Sultana Projects’ Board Chair Patti Hegland. “John’s presence will help Sultana to increase both the quantity and quality of our programs in the coming years. Speaking on behalf of the entire Board of Directors, we are thrilled that John is rejoining the Sultana team.” “I’m very excited about the opportunity to return to Sul- John Mann, Sultana tana Projects Projects Director of and help build Educational Programs a new area of the program,” said John Mann. “This will allow for a greater number of people to get out on the water and develop a better understanding of our connection to the Chesapeake Bay.” The creation of the “Director of Educational Programs” position is part of a strategic expansion of Sultana Projects’ program capacity. In addition to this year-round, full-time position, in 2011 Sultana Projects will also be adding two new seasonal positions to facilitate an expansion of its kayaking programs. “With the addition of John Mann and these new seasonal positions, Sultana Projects will be able to increase the number of students we serve by approximately 20%,” commented Sultana Projects President, Drew McMullen. For additional information on Sultana Projects, call 410-7785954 or email dmcmullen@ sultanaprojects.org or visit www. sultanaprojects.org.
