Flag Facts
The United States Flag, adopted on June 14, 1777, is the fourth oldest
national flag in the world. Denmark’s flag, adopted in 1219, is the oldest.
•A flag expert is called a “vexillologist.”
•The blue field on the U.S. Flag is called the “union.”
•On Memorial Day (the last Monday in May), to honor all who died
in battle, the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only,
then raised to the top of the staff for the remainder of the day.
•Since 1834, the U.S. Flag has flown continuously next to the
grave of the Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette,
near Paris, France.
•June 14 was proclaimed Flag Day by President Woodrow Wilson
in 1916. While Flag Day was a popular celebration in scores of
communities for many years after Wilson’s proclamation, it didn’t
receive its official Congressional designation until 1949.
The United States Flag should always be treated with the utmost care
and respect. Remember, the flag represents a living country, and as
such, is considered a living thing.
•Always display the flag with the blue union field up – never
display the flag upside down, except as a distress signal.
•Always hold the flag carefully – never let it touch anything
beneath it: the ground, the floor, water or merchandise.
•Always keep the flag aloft and free – never carry it flat or
horizontally.
•Always keep the flag clean and safe – never let it become torn,
soiled or damaged.
•Always dispose of a flag properly, preferably by burning it.
•Always treat the flag with respect. Never use it for advertising
purposes. Never embroider it on household items or pieces of
clothing. Never use it as part of a costume or athletic uniform.
However, it is proper to attach a flag patch to the uniform of military
personnel, fire fighters, police officers and members of other
patriotic organizations – provided the patch is properly affixed.

Chesapeake Glass Colony Cats
Need New Homes…
BY THE END OF MARCH!!!
These and several other cats around a business need new homes
by the end of March when the business will be forced to move. These cats
are outdoor cats, but some are very tame and enter the office for the day.
Some would make terrific indoor pets while others may prefer an
indoor/outdoor situation and others would be great barn cats.
All are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations.
If you or someone you know would be interested in adopting any
of these cats or have an area (an empty barn would be great) where
they could be moved and fed/cared for by their current caretaker –
or have a property where a small shed (no water or electric needed) could be
placed to house the cats so the current caretaker can take care of them –
please call Pepi at 410-490-1466.

Little School Students at Kent
School Teach Dinosaur Lessons
Parents, friends, and other special guests were invited to the Little School Dinosaur
Fair on Friday, February 7th. Guests were surprised to learn so much about
dinosaurs from their three and four year old hosts. Taking the lead as budding
paleontologists, the Little School students guided their guests through games,
puzzles, and even a fossil dig. The stations culminated in a pop quiz for the guests
who earned tickets for each correct answer. The children were delighted to help
with answers when an adult guest was stumped. Tickets were redeemed for entry
into the “Dinosaur Museum” where student-created artwork and projects were on
display.
Vivienne Falanga, Director of Little School said,
“Preparation for the Dino Fair began in January.
Each week we explored a new topic associated
with pre-historic dinosaurs. We spent time learning
about dinosaurs from the Triassic, Jurassic, and
Cretaceous periods and how dinosaurs changed
over time. The children can also tell you about
which animals today were also alive when dinosaurs
roamed the planet. It is a thrill for them to share all Kent School’s Little School
that they learned.”
students recently presented
Parents and other guests thoroughly enjoyed the the Little School Dinosaur Fair.
“Dinosaur Fair.” One parent commented that, “the best part of the Dino Fair was
that it was completely led by the children. I was so impressed with their comfort
level as they took us through each station and asked us questions. Clearly, they
were very pleased to share their expertise.”
Falanga continued, “The Dinosaur Fair and everything we do in Little School is
about preparing our students for success in kindergarten and beyond. Activities
like these are fun and engaging, they build confidence, and most importantly
they make learning a joy. The Dino fair is about collaborative learning and multidisciplinary discovery. We hope our children remember their “dino” facts. More
importantly, we want them to remember how much fun learning is.”
For more information about Little School at Kent School visit ww.kentschool.org
or call 410-778-4100. Little School serves three and four year old children with
a flexible schedule of three, four, or five days per week and whole or half-day
schedules.

QAC Public Schools Celebrate Career and
Technical Education Month in February
Students and faculty in Queen
Anne’s County join others across
the nation during the month of
February to celebrate national
Career and Technical Education
(CTE) MonthTM. This year’s theme
is Celebrate CTE Superheroes! CTE
Month provides CTE programs
across the country an opportunity
to demonstrate how CTE educates
students to be college and careerready and prepares them for
high-wage, high-demand career
fields. Currently, students have
been preparing for their Technical
Skills Attainment certifications
and exams. They offer all 10 of
the Maryland State Department
of Education Career Clusters and
18 Career Technology Education
programs of study.
“The Career Technology Education
(CTE) activities in our classes
that are planned over the next
few months will illustrate the
rigor and relevance CTE courses
offer our students,” said Tina
Thomas, Supervisor of the Career
Technology Education program
in Queen Anne’s County. “By
partnering with the business
community, CTE programs are
investing in students’ lives with
the latest technology and skills
that will prepare them to become
successful employees as well as
future leaders.”
CTE encompasses 94% of high
school students and 13 million
postsecondary students in the
United States and includes high
schools, career centers, community
and technical colleges, four-year
universities and more. CTE is
a major part of the solution to
myriad national economic and
workforce problems, such as high
school dropout rates, a weakened
economy, global competitiveness
and massive layoffs. According
to the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics, nearly one-third of
the fastest growing occupations
will require an associate’s degree
or a postsecondary vocational
certificate. At a time when job
opportunity is so critical, CTE
programs in every community are
ensuring students are adequately
equipped with the skills to
successfully enter the workforce.

Technology Education in Queen

General James Mattis on February 21st
Retired Marine Corps General
James N. Mattis will be the featured
honoree
when
Washington
College gathers Friday afternoon,
February 21st, for its annual
George Washington’s Birthday
Convocation. General Mattis,
who most recently served as
Commander of the U.S. Central
Command, will receive an
honorary doctor of laws degree.
The College also will bestow
its President’s Medal on a local
character-education
program,
Character
Counts!,
and
a
businessman and civic leader who
is its staunchest champion, Richard
Goodall. In addition, it will
recognize the accomplishments of
two distinguished alumni, thank
dedicated employees for their
service, and welcome a select
group of students into the nation’s
oldest academic honor society, Phi
Beta Kappa. The convocation ceremony is
scheduled to take place in Decker
Theatre, Gibson Center for the
Arts, at 3:30pm. Immediately
afterward, the Theta of Maryland
chapter of Phi Beta Kappa will
host a reception in the Underwood
Lobby outside Decker Theatre,
with wine and appetizers donated
by Chartwells, the corporation
that operates food services on
campus, and music provided
by the Washington College Jazz
Combo. Both the convocation and
the reception are free and open to
the public.
A revered “Marine’s Marine”
known for his bluntness, humor,
intellect, and appetite for books,
James N. Mattis retired from
military life last May after 41 years
of service. He began his career
as a second lieutenant fresh out
of the ROTC program at Central
Washington University and ended
it as a four-star general responsible
for military operations involving
more than 200,000 soldiers, sailors,
airmen, Coast Guardsmen and
Marines in Afghanistan, Iraq and 18
other countries in the Middle East
and Asia. In between, he held major
commands that included the 1st
Marine Division that invaded Iraq
in 2003, the Marine Corps Combat
Development Command, the
First Marine Expeditionary Force,
the U.S. Joint Forces Command,
and NATO Supreme Allied
Commander
Transformation.
An expert on military strategy
and national security issues, in
2006 he coauthored, with General
David Petraeus, the U.S. military’s
counterinsurgency manual.
The Washington College President’s
Medal is presented each year to
an individual or organization that
has made a
sustained
positive
contribution
to the quality
of life in the
region. This
year it honors
Goodall, chief
executive
o f f i c e r Retired Marine Corps
of
global General James N. Mattis.
manufacturer Dixon Valve and
Coupling Company, for his
steadfast commitment to education
and young people.
A separate 2014 President’s Medal
will go to the local Character Counts!
program. Character Counts! sends
130 character coaches (including
34 Dixon Valve employees and
20 Washington College students
or staff) into Kent County
classrooms each week to teach
the importance of its “Six Pillars
of Character”: trustworthiness,
respect, responsibility, fairness,
caring and citizenship. They
connect with some 1,700 students,
from pre-kindergarten through 9th
grade, and become role models for
building a successful life.
The Washington College Alumni
Association this year honors two
men who have distinguished
themselves in their careers and in
their contributions to their alma
mater, John A. Conkling ’65 and
Peter Maller ’90. Both will receive
an Alumni Service Award.
Four College employees will
receive Distinguished Service
awards
for
outstanding
contributions to the campus
community: Patrice DiQuinzio,
associate provost for academic
affairs; Robin A. Locke, the Dining
Services cook who runs the popular
“My Pantry” station; Thaddeus L.
Moore, head athletic trainer and
associate athletic director; and
John L. Seidel, Lammot duPont

Do you know TED? This global
organization was the brainchild of Richard
Saul Wurman, president of the non-profit
Sapling Foundation. Founded in 1984,
TED (short for Technology, Entertainment,
Design) was intended to be a one-week
event focused on “Ideas Worth Spreading.”
In 1990, it became an annual conference.
And since then, TED has spawned events
all over the globe. The offspring is known as TEDx,
independently organized events that put
locally-driven ideas on stage. To date,
more than 130 countries have live TEDx
presentations following TED’s format
and rules. The most notable one is that
no presentation can exceed 18 minutes
in length. You can sample them online,
where over 30,000 TEDx presentations are
available.
Once you have caught the TED bug, you
need to register to attend the second
TEDx event in Chestertown on Saturday,
March 1, in Decker Theater inside the
Gibson Center for the Arts on the campus
of Washington College. The line-up of live
speakers is exciting:
Meg Olmert, who spoke at the inaugural
TEDx Chester River, is the Director of
Research at Warrior-Canine Connection.
She will present her findings on “The
Human-Animal Bond in the 21st Century.”
“The End of Cancer As a Deadly Disease”
is the hopeful theme of Richard Thorp’s
presentation. He is the CEO of ILSbio,
headquartered here in Chestertown.
Also from Chestertown, you do not want
to miss a live presentation by Matthew
Swanson and Robbi Behr, creators of
Idiots’ Books, speaking on “The Odd Logic
of Collaboration: When Yes Means No and
No Means Yes.”
Myron “Mike” Arms, author, explorer,
and environmentalist, who makes his
land-based homes in Georgetown and
Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, will speak on
“Crossing the Milk Sea”. “Paying It Forward: Mentoring Around the
World” will be the focus of a talk by Mary
Daley Yerrick, Co-Chair Emeritus of Vital
Voices Global Partnership.
Kaitlin Thomas, Lecturer of Spanish and
Washington College Hispanic Liaison to
George Spilich, professor at Washington the Maryland Migrant Education Program,
College, will present a talk on “Secrets will speak on “The Shadow Journey:
Your Brain Doesn’t Want You To Know.”
Crossing the Border.”
Frank Bond of the Newseum in Washington, And all of this in one afternoon! The
D.C. will speak on “The Freedom Riders: program begins at 1:00 (doors open at

Bus Trip to Philadelphia Flower
Show “ARTiculture” on March 4th
The long love affair between art and nature - and the artistic expression found in
great garden and floral design - will be captured in an extraordinary presentation of
the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, held March 1st through 9th at the Pennsylvania
Convention Center.
Join Adkins Arboretum on Tuesday, March 4th for a bus
excursion to “ARTiculture,” the 2014 Philadelphia Flower Show, and explore
how exquisite landscapes, gardens and floral arrangements have inspired artists
from the Old Masters to the Impressionists to the most creative forces working
today. The world’s leading landscape and floral designers will demonstrate that
horticultural design is itself a form of art. For the first time, the nation’s first and
largest flower show will partner with the country’s most regarded art museums to
create a living canvas in ARTiculture.
Tickets are $75 for Arboretum members, $95 for non-members and include
transportation, driver gratuity and admission to the Flower Show. The bus
departs from Creamery Lane/Aurora Park Drive in Easton at 10am and from
Adkins Arboretum in Ridgely at 10:30am. An additional stop will be added for
Chestertown-area participants upon request. The bus will depart for home at
7pm.
The annual PHS Philadelphia Flower Show is the oldest and largest indoor
flower show, attracting more than 260,000 people annually. All proceeds from the
Show support the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, particularly the City Harvest
program, which feeds more than 1,200 families each week during the growing
season.
The trip is a joint venture between Adkins Arboretum and Academy Art Museum.
To register or for additional information about Arboretum programs visit
www.adkinsarboretum.org or call 410-634-2847 extension 0.
Adkins Arboretum is a 400-acre native garden and preserve at the headwaters of
the Tuckahoe Creek in Caroline County. Open year round, the Arboretum offers
educational programs for all ages about nature and gardening.

Sally Brompton Weekly Horoscope
Your Weekly Horoscope By Sally Brompton - Distributed By New York Times Special Features
February 24th-March 2nd
IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK:
The Sun joins forces with Neptune at the start of your birthday week, which makes
you more imaginative but also a little naive. Yes, it’s nice to believe that everyone you meet
is as honest and as generous as you, but they’re not. Try not to learn that the hard way.
ARIES (March 21-April 20)
No matter what plans you may have made for
the coming week you must set aside time to
be by yourself and think about the direction
your life is heading. And if you come to the
conclusion that it isn’t heading anywhere then
do something about it.
LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23):
It’s time to stop acting like an amateur and
get started on something of a serious nature.
Cosmic activity in the work and wellbeing area
of your chart makes this the perfect time to
start a new project or begin a new fitness
regime. Get to it!
TAURUS (April 21 -May 21):
A particular group of people may seem
completely different to you but you have more
in common with them than you realize. What
happens this week will awaken you to the fact
that you should be working, and laughing,
together more often.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22):
Anything of a creative, artistic or romantic
nature will go well this week. Even if you are
one of those Scorpios who doesn’t like to court
attention you will be assertive and ambitious
over the next seven days. You can succeed
and you will succeed.
GEMINI (May 22-June 21):
How tough are you? Tough enough to rise to
any challenge? Let’s hope so because the next
few days will confront you with the kind of tests
that bring out the best in some people and
turn others into gibbering wrecks. Good luck!
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21):
Loved ones and work colleagues will forgive
you almost anything this week, so you may
as well make the most of it. However, you
will be forgiven just the once, so if you are
going to get caught at least make sure the
sin is worth it!
CANCER (June 22-July 23):
You are entitled to believe whatever you want
to believe and anyone who tries to tell you
otherwise is not your friend and you must
not waste time arguing with them. Make sure
you use your right to think, speak and act as
you see fit.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20):
The planets are urging you to go out and have
a good time. Do you need to be told twice?
This is an excellent time for meeting people
and swapping ideas about, well, just about
everything. The more you chat the more your
awareness will grow.
LEO (July 24-Aug. 23):
You need to be careful where business issues
are concerned this week, and if you are offered
some kind of deal you must investigate it
thoroughly. The devil is in the details and if
you miss the small print you may have to pay.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19):
You like to splash out occasionally and the
current cosmic set-up makes it difficult to
keep your money in your pocket. Promise
yourself now, before the new week begins,
that you will limit yourself to a fixed amount
of spending money every day.
VIRGO (Aug. 24-Sept. 23):
Partners and colleagues have the upper
hand at the moment and if you are wise you
will let them make whatever decisions they
want to make. But you must also make sure
that if things go wrong it won’t be you who
takes the blame.
PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20):
Don’t listen to the doubters and the cynics
– if there is something you want to do then
just do it, no matter how foolhardy it seems
to the world at large. This is a time for taking
risks and pushing limits. You may find there
are no limits.

Dear Dr. Truth:
My husband is in the military. He is
overseas and has been for a long time.
My mother-in-law and father-in-law are
good people. My kids and me have been
living with them. We are so blessed. My
parents are 2000 miles away and very
busy people. My mom is so jealous of my
living situation that it makes my head spin.
How can I explain that we struggle every
day? That she should support us like my
in-laws do. Her jealously is so negative
and destructive. I need to be positive and
stay focused. Pulled
Dear Pulled,
God bless you and your family. You should
not have to explain anything to your
mother. She sounds like a very immature
woman…AND that’s the truth!

2014 • CHESTERTOWN, MD
(EASTERN STANDARD TIME)
Info on currently playing movies at Chester 5 Theatres in Chestertown.
WINTER’S TALE - One night in early 20th-century New York, master thief Peter Lake
(Colin Farrell) breaks into a Central Park mansion – and quickly has his heart stolen by
its occupant, Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay). Unfortunately, their love is starcrossed; she is dying from consumption, and he is marked for death by his demonic
former mentor, Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe). Peter battles the forces of time and
darkness to save Beverly, even as Pearly does everything in his power to defeat Peter.
ROBOCOP - In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp
is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the
military for years – and it’s meant billions for OmniCorp’s bottom line. Now OmniCorp
wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden
opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) – a loving husband, father
and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit – is
critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance to build a part-man,
part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more
billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man
inside the machine pursuing justice.
ABOUT LAST NIGHT - A modern reimagining of the classic romantic comedy, this
contemporary version closely follows new love for two couples as they journey from
the bar to the bedroom and are eventually put to the test in the real world. Starring
Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy and Regina Hall.
THE LEGO MOVIE - Emmet (Chris Pratt), an ordinary LEGO figurine who always
follows the rules, is mistakenly identified as the Special – an extraordinary being and
the key to saving the world. He finds himself drafted into a fellowship of strangers
who are on a mission to stop an evil tyrant’s (Will Ferrell) plans to conquer the world.
Unfortunately for Emmet, he is hopelessly – and hilariously – unprepared for such a
task, but he’ll give it his all nonetheless.
THE MONUMENTS MEN - Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in
history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II
platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from
Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible
mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under
orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum
directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1
– possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found
themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture,
they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

mix of songs and stories that pay tribute to the beauty and majesty of the
Chesapeake Bay, the people who live on its shores and work its waters.
This is not a show for children, but teens and tweens as well as adults will enjoy
and be inspired by the songs and stories that are about everything from the love of
an old boat, to a waterman working in winter, to what’s on the table in an Eastern
Shore home.
Included will be original songs and poetry by Tom McHugh who sings and plays
banjo and harmonica, spoken word pieces gathered and presented by Andy
