Discuss the type of hazards that could affect
your family. Know your home’s vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.
Locate a safe room or the safest areas in your home for each hurricane
hazard. In certain circumstances the safest areas may not be your
home but within your community.
Strengthen the exterior of your house so wind and debris do not tear large
openings in it. You can do this by protecting and reinforcing these five
critical areas: roof, straps, shutters, doors, windows and garage doors.
Determine escape routes from your home and places to meet.
Have an out-of-state friend as a family contact, so all your family
members have a single point of contact.
Make a plan now for what to do with your pets if you need to evacuate.
Post emergency telephone numbers by your phones and make sure
your children know how and when to call 911.
Check your insurance coverage - flood damage is not usually covered by homeowners insurance. National Flood Insurance Program
Stock non-perishable emergency supplies and a Disaster Supply Kit:

IS YOUR TREATMENT BASED on science? Or some drug company executive’s idea of a fat bonus this Christmas?
Are you delaying needed care while
swallowing a magic cure-all? A complete
analysis of all published medical studies on the treatment of Low Back Pain
(LBP) was performed by major research
University. “Finding #8: In our view, the
constellation of evidence of: (a) the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of
chiropractic management of low-back
pain, (b) the untested, questionable or
harmful nature of many current medical
therapies, (c) the economic efficiency
of chiropractic care for low-back pain
compared to medical care, (d) the safety
of chiropractic care, (e) the higher satisfaction levels expressed by patients of
chiropractors, together offers an over-
whelming case in favor of much greater
use of chiropractic services in the management of low-back pain.” -page 12.
Free copy of study! The studies are piling up. It’s now impossible to hide from
the fact that chiropractic is the safest,
most effective back and neck care in the
world. Insurance companies love chiropractic for a reason! Medicare, worker’s
comp., auto and most health insurances
pay chiropractic care. Non-insured care
is inexpensive and staying well is positively cheap! Call Schreppler Chiropractic 410-778-4696. Free consultations. 25
years of local, friendly, effective care.
PROFESSIONAL PARENTING CLASSES & Counseling - Also, daycare services
available, license #1425655; Call Dr. William

Crawl Space
What is the “Stack Effect”?
Fact: Heat rises and as it rises through the
upper levels of your home new air must
enter to replace the air that escaped. This
creates a suction at the lower levels to
draw in replacement air. In a “tight” home,
approximately half the air escapes from
the upper levels – PER HOUR - more so
in a “leaky” home. This creates an airflow
in your home from bottom to top – the
“stack effect”.
Up to 50% of the air on the first floor is
from the crawl space, so everything in
your crawl space – i.e., mositure, mildew,
mold, wood rot and even pests – is
permeating your living areas.
Benefits of Reducing Humidity in Your Home:
•Reduction of damp air reduces the amount
of energy required for heating and cooling
•Eliminate condensation, mildew, mold, wood rot and pests
•Prevent buckling of hardwood floors
•Eliminate moisture that causes smelly, damp carpets
•Reduce allergy and asthma irritants
•Elminate sticky, swollen windows and doors
•Increase the life of sheathing, shingles and paint on/in your home.

July 14—With less than a month left before my birthday, I have been
thinking about how the law defines age. Here’s what I came up with:
•At birth. Your mother is required to complete a birth certificate and
application for a social security number for you. Both of these legal documents
will follow you your entire life.
•Age 5. You are required to attend school, even if home-schooled.
•Age 8. You are old enough to be left home alone.
•Age 13. You are old enough to care for younger children, provided you are
‘reliable.’
•Age 15 and 9 months. You are old enough to get a driver’s learner’s license.
You must have your learner’s license for at least nine months, so the earliest
you can get your provisional driver’s license is age 16 and 6 months.
•Age 16. You are old enough to drop out of school.
•Age 18. You are legally emancipated. You can own property in your own
name. You can be held liable as an adult for any crime you might commit.
You can testify as a witness and serve on a jury. You can marry without
your parents’ or guardians’ consent. You are old enough to get a real driver’s
license. If you are a male, you have to register for the selective service, even
though we no longer have compulsory military service in this country. You
are eligible to vote, but you still have to register. You are old enough to buy
cigarettes and other tobacco products (but don’t do it).
•Age 21. You are finally old enough to drink alcohol legally.
•Age 59 and 6 months.. You are old enough to take money out of your
Individual Retirement Account without paying a penalty, although you will
still owe state and federal income taxes.
•Age 61 and 9 months. You can apply for Social Security benefits, which
can begin the first month after your 62nd birthday.
•Age 65. You are eligible for Medicare.
•Age 70 and 6 months. You are required to take a minimum distribution
from your Individual Retirement Account.
I’ve hit most of these ages. It is my goal to hit all of them and beyond, even
if I am a lawyer! I hope you do too.

Getting Back into the Swing Following Angioplasty
Coronary angioplasty is a procedure to open clogged heart arteries. First,
a catheter, or small tube, is snaked into the artery; then, a balloon on its end is
expanded to force the artery open. Often, a stent, or small wire mesh device, is
inserted at the site of the clog to keep the artery open and prevent a heart attack.
The procedure usually takes several hours and requires a short hospital stay.
Because angioplasty and stenting increase the amount of blood flowing to the
heart, many people feel better almost immediately. How quickly you can return to activities such as tennis or golf is variable and
depends on your physical condition and activity level before the angioplasty, the
number of blood vessels involved and your response to treatment. Your cardiologist
will determine the level of activity appropriate for you.
Physical therapy often begins soon after surgery. Six to eight hours after the
angioplasty, patients are generally encouraged to walk around, although they may
feel sluggish and weak for a day or two. Lifting more than ten pounds and engaging
in vigorous exercise should be avoided for the first week or two, but studies
have shown that moderate exercise after stenting does not increase the risk of
complications. After a few months, your cardiologist may order an exercise stress
test to assess your condition and make sure your arteries remain open.
Not only is exercise safer than it was before your angioplasty but most physicians
recommend it because of the benefits it affords. Exercise can
• prevent the recurrence of the condition that led to the angioplasty
in the first place
• enable you to get a better night’s sleep
• keep your blood pressure, cholesterol and weight at healthy levels
Regardless of your physical limitations, we can work with you and your physician
to set up an exercise program to help you to reach your goals. Using our skills and
experience, we can determine the duration and intensity of your exercise program.
The good news is that many patients who were physically active before angioplasty
are able to return to playing the sports they love.

It’s time to begin thinking of fall
vegetables. Seed for fall crops of
broccoli and cauliflower should be
sown in containers by the 3rd to 4th
week in July. Late crops of squash,
beans and cucumbers can be direct
sown through the end of July.

Your Weekly Horoscope By Sally Brompton - Distributed By New York Times Special Features
July 18th-July 24th
IF YOUR BIRTHDAY IS THIS WEEK:
What you achieve in the world is important but what you learn about yourself,
and other people, over the course of a lifetime is what really counts. What you learn
over the coming year will take you to a higher level of understanding.
ARIES (March 21-April 20)
Something you have been planning for weeks,
months, maybe even years will get the green
light this week. Now you can show the powers
that be what you are capable of. Now you can
be the star for a change.
LIBRA (Sept. 24-Oct. 23):
Someone you meet on your travels will open
your mind, and maybe your heart too. If you
have been thinking of taking a vacation then
you must stop thinking, pack that bag and
hop on a plane or a bus – now!
TAURUS (April 21 -May 21):
If your life has become a bit too predictable
of late then spice things up this coming week.
The fact that you are usually such a serious
individual will increase the shock value when
you do something outrageous.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22):
As the Sun moves closer to the midheaven
angle of your chart so your thoughts will turn
to your career and your place in the world.
Could you be bigger? Could you be better?
There’s still time to make it happen.
GEMINI (May 22-June 21):
Something unusual will happen as far as your
love life is concerned over the next seven days.
But is it love or is it infatuation? You need to
be clear on that point before you make your
next romantic move.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21):
What you think is so important today will be
utterly insignificant come the end of the week,
so don’t fret if things are not going your way
at the moment. One of the best times of the
year is fast approaching.
CANCER (June 22-July 23):
You may think that someone is out to do you
harm but there is no truth in that – it’s just you
being overly suspicious. Act as if everyone in
the whole wide world is your friend – it’s not
far from reality.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20):
Something will happen over the next few days
that brings a huge smile to your face – and
not before time. No matter what may have
occurred when the moon was full on the 15th
you will bounce back this week.
LEO (July 24-Aug. 23):
Cosmic activity in the friendship area of your
chart will make you the center of attention over
the next few days – which is exactly where
you want to be. You’re at your best when all
eyes are on you.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 19):
Yes, okay, so you missed an opportunity to
make some money or move up on the work
front but it’s not the end of the world. It could
even be good news as there is an even better
opportunity coming up soon.
VIRGO (Aug. 24-Sept. 23):
If someone makes you the proverbial offer you
can’t refuse this week you must think carefully
before you accept. It may indeed be a very
good deal but is it in line with your long-term
ambitions? If not, give it a miss.
PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20):
The planets warn you would be wise to keep
personal information to yourself, because if
the wrong person gets to hear about it it could
have an adverse effect on your reputation –
especially if they’ve got a big mouth.

less expensive eye drug

It always comes as good news when
patients learn that a less-expensive
drug works just as well as a much
more expensive alternative. That is
why patients being treated for macular

disease that can lead to blindness) were
quite happy to find that Avastin works
just as well as Lucentis. A monthly shot
of Lucentis costs $2,000 while a shot of
Avastin costs only $50. According to

5 Ways to Go “Green”
(And Save Money, Too!)
Whether your motivation is to save the planet or save some money, going “green” with your office IT is a smart move.
After all, who doesn’t want to save a little money, especially when it’s SO incredibly easy!
5 Painless Ways To Go Green And Save Green
Want To “Green Up” Your Office?
1. Go paperless! The concept of the paperless office was introduced years ago
with the invention of document imaging. However, one look around your office
will surely prove that was a bit of a pipedream.
2. Power down your network at night. The computers in your office are the
largest drain on electricity in your office; and considering you’re only using
them for approximately 9-10 hours a day, that means you’re paying for 14-15
hours of unnecessary power.
3. Go virtual! Virtualization allows you to “run” multiple computers or servers
on one “super computer.” Sometimes this is accomplished by replacing your
complex, power-sucking, expensive workstations with much less expensive
“thin-client” machines that require very little power or maintenance to operate.
4. Allow employees to work from home. More and more businesses are creating
virtual workspaces for several reasons.
5. Dispose of old electronics responsibly. Your computer is made with a wide
variety of components, many of which are toxic. When old computers are
disposed of improperly, these substances can enter the environment, causing
pollution and associated plant and animal death, along with birth defects.
If you want to discover how we can help you save money while being more
environmentally friendly, call us for a “Going Green” audit. We’ll come onsite to
review your office environment and present you with multiple ways to cut costs
while going green. In many cases we can show you how to:
•
Drastically reduce your power usage and electric bill.
•
Cut your IT hardware, software and support costs by
40% to 50% through virtualization.
•
Cut your paper usage and all the costs around printing,
storing, filing and managing all that paper.
•
Select more environmentally friendly choices in
hardware, printers, scanners, and other devices.
•
Have peace of mind that your network could be back
up and running in the event of a disaster with greener
and more efficient backup solutions.

The Prince Theatre Presents Devon
Allman’s “Honeytribe” on July 14th
The Garfield Center for the Arts at the Prince
theatre welcomes Devon Allman’s Honeytribe
to the stage on Thursday, July 14th. Doors
open at 7pm with the performance starting at
8pm. Tickets are $10.00 each.
Honeytribe’s music is feel based. Although
featuring Devon Allman as the front man
(yes from that Allman family), this band is
an ensemble cast all the way. Allman has
surrounded himself with the A-list of musicians
from mid-west America. If you like music with
feel and soul by artists like Santana, BB King,
The Dead, ZZ Top, The Black Crowes, the
Stones, etc… you will have a love affair with
Honeytribe. Real deal, timeless, feel good
music from the soul, for the soul.
Devon Allman has been busy lately, touring
the planet, working on new material for
the new Honeytribe album, and also being Honeytribe performs at the Prince
featured on a top ten hit in Europe with guitar Theatre on Thursday, July 14th.
monster, Javier Vargas. After several European Photo by Clay Lipsky.
tours and a video on MTV Europe, it’s been quite a year for the soul singer/blues
guitarist and if you can catch him this year, you will see an artist on the threshold
of greatness.
Rounding out Honeytribe is “arguably the most kick ass group of cats in the
Mid-West.” George Potsos, whose bass playing has taken him all over the world
and Jack Kirkner who many know as the Hammond B3/piano player from the
mid-west Grateful Dead tribute band “the Schwag”. In drummer, Mark Oyarzabal,
Devon has his right hand man, partner in crime and a slammin, singin, Puerto
Rican beat master.
The synergy of this band on stage is something to behold. Shifting from killer old
blues songs to their own material, this is a band that will make you go “WOW!”
while you watch them. From a straight up knock you in the teeth blues feel to
a very girl-friendly island feel, this band has something for all feel-based music
lovers. If you join any Tribe in today’s twisted world… make sure it’s Honeytribe.

Dr. Truth
Dear Dr. Truth:
My wife just had our first child by
c-section. I thought it would give my
mother something to do if she came
and helped with the baby for a couple
of weeks. Well, it got off on the wrong
foot. My mother came in and the first
thing she said was “Where did that chin
come from?” Then she moved into the
lips, nose and feet – shazam! Well, my
wife called my mother a chicken-necker
and my mother called her “big chinned
trailer trash”. Push came to shove and
now they aren’t speaking to me. All I
tried to do was help. Man, I will never
understand female hormones. I need my mother to leave but her stubborn
rear end is staying. Heellpp!
Dear Help,
I can never understand people without a
backbone. Tell momma to hit the road.
The damage is done…AND that’s
the truth!

Max’s All-Stars with Warren Vaché
at The Mainstay on July 21st
Warren Vaché, a cornetist known for his superb stylings, burnished tone and
intelligent improvisations, will join members of Max’s Mainstay All-Stars for an
evening of improvisational jazz at the Mainstay in Rock Hall on Thursday, July
21st at 7:30pm.
The Café Mainstay Max n’ Friends series was a popular feature at the Mainstay
for many years. Each month it featured top-notch local jazz musicians who
formed a core “house-band” and a nationally known guest performer. The series
was funded through the generosity of the late Max Corzilius who played drums
with the band. When Max was no longer able to participate, Mainstay Director
Tom McHugh and members of the Mainstay staff met with house band organizer
and vibes player Chuck Redd and Mainstay Board member Becky Byrd and
came up with this new series in the Café Mainstay mold honoring Max Corzelius’s
contributions to the Mainstay.
The first of this yearr’s Café Mainstay series features the stellar cornetist and
Mainstay favorite Warren Vaché in an evening of improvisation on great jazz
standards. He’ll be joined by Max’s Mainstay All-Stars members Chuck Redd on
vibes/drums, Robert Redd on piano and Tommy Cecil on bass.
Vaché is a versatile performer known not only for his beautiful tone but also for
his chance-taking approach to improvisation. He has performed and recorded
with such luminaries as: Benny Goodman, Rosemary Clooney, Gerry Mulligan,
Woody Herman, Ruby Braff and Bobby Short and at every major jazz venue and
festival across the globe from club dates at Condon’s and the Blue Note to the
Newport Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival and Perugia in Italy, including
concerts at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Vienna Opera, and the Royal
Festival Hall in London. He has a lengthy list of film and theatre credits including
acting, performing, music direction, and composing and continues to record and
perfrom internationally. Presently, he is a regular on Tuesdays at the Metropolitan
Room in New York.
Admission is $20. For more information and reservations call 410-6399133. Information is also available at the Mainstay’s website http://www.

Kent County 4-H Fair in Tolchester
July 21st through July 23rd
The 2011 Kent County Fair will be
held Thursday, July 21st through
Saturday, July 23rd at the Kent Ag
Center on Route 21 in Tolchester.
Great music and entertainment
are scheduled for the Kent County
4-H Fair this year. Friday night
will feature Philip and Henry Amazing Magicians. They have
provided entertainment all over
the United States for over twenty
years. Saturday will feature the
Classic and Antique Car Show,
Craft and Vendor Fair, and Cow
Plop Bingo. And two fair favorites
– the 4-H Live Stock Auction and
Cake Auction – will be held at
7:30pm on Saturday evening.
The traditional dinners that
everyone loves will be held
each evening between 5pm and
7pm beginning with the Pit Beef
Barbeque on Thursday, Pork
Barbeque and Fish Fry on Friday,
and Chicken Barbeque and Fish
Fry on Saturday. For dessert,
visit the Red Barn for great hand
dipped ice cream. In addition there
will be a lot of wonderful vendors
serving great food and commercial
exhibitors with information of
interest. Eastern Shore Tents and
Events will provide rides at the
Midway. For an extra treat ride all
night for one price on Thursday.
4-H is a wonderful opportunity
for the youth in Kent County.
Whether working on agricultural
projects or many of the projects
involving environmental science,
photography,
woodworking,
forestry or shooting sports,
participants gain practical life skills
that will help the community in the
future. Come out and celebrate
their accomplishments.
The Kent County Fair does not just
“happen”. It takes a ton of talent
and time from many children,
parents, community leaders and
volunteers. The fair’s success could
not be accomplished without all of
you. Thank you.
The Kent County Fair provides
great afternoons and evenings of
good Eastern Shore family fun so
we hope to see you there!

Queen Anne’s County Public School
Students Perform Well in MSA’s
Dr. Carol Williamson, Queen Anne’s
County Schools Superintendent,
announced the release of Maryland
State Assessment (MSA) Reading
and Math scores for the 2010-2011
school year. These assessments
are administered annually to all
students in grades three through
eight. Once again, Queen Anne’s
County students performed at high
levels of proficiency in both reading
and mathematics. Dr. Williamson
praised
students,
teachers,
principals and supervisors for their
hard work and dedication that led
to this high level of success. She
pointed out that each year as the
Annual Measurement Objective
(AMO) increases, the increments of
progress get smaller and the target
is much more difficult to hit.
MSA scores in reading and math
reflect above average performance
in every grade level. Data reflects
that Queen Anne’s County schools
are performing in the top quarter
of all school systems in the state.
The scores reflect over 90% of
students in grades 3 through 6 are
performing at a high proficiency
level in reading and math. While
scores of students in grade 7
decreased, grade 8 students made
excellent gains in reading and
math. We are especially pleased
with the gains in performance for
our African American students,
as well as our Special Education
students. Our 8th grade African
American students made a +14.3
gain in math in comparison to
2010 scores. Another population
of students who made significant
gains in reading and math were
our 6th, 7th and 8th grade Special
Education students. In comparing
2010 to 2011 math scores, the 6th
grade Special Education students
had an increase of 10.1 percentage
points, 8th grade increased in
reading by 16.1 percentage points,
and in math by 5.8 percentage
points.
Dr. Williamson said, “The challenge
for Queen Anne’s County educators
will be to continue to strive towards
the 100% proficiency goal for all
students in reading and math. To
reach that goal we will need to
continue refining our approaches
to address the needs of our various
student populations. On-going
initiatives that have proven to be
effective will be continued. These
initiatives include the alignment
of curriculum, instruction, and
assessment, monitoring student
performance,
providing
time
for teachers to discuss student
work/data, using research-based
interventions, and supporting jobembedded staff development.”
Dr. Williamson added, “I strongly
believe that these initiatives have
contributed to school and system
success.”
The 2011 MSA science scores from
the elementary and middle school
level, High School Assessment
(HSA) scores, graduation rates and
attendance figures will be released
in the coming months. High school
and system-wide AYP (Adequate
Yearly Progress) information will
be available when the HSA scores
are released.
Visit the QACPS website for

results
