Garden Club Update: Sunshine,
spring time and the GFPL Children’s Garden Club have officially
arrived! Last month, we built four
raised beds, had four yards of dirt
delivered and moved into the
raised garden beds, and had our
first club meeting. The children
are very excited about digging in
the dirt and getting the garden
ready for planting.
preparing the dirt for our upcoming planting days. Coming up at
the beginning of June we will be
planting tomatoes, peppers,
cucumbers, beans, peas, lettuce,
carrots, and radishes. During the
summer months we will be exploring garden care and maintenance,
nutrition in the garden, and even
composting!
During our first garden club meeting each child had the opportunity
to plant either an edible flower or
herb to care for at home. We also
worked hard in the garden beds
To follow garden club projects,
updates, and photos check out
the garden club page on the GFPL
website or visit the GFPL Children’s Department on Facebook.

July - No July meeting.
At the May TAB meeting, we
discussed the teen summer
reading program. We're planning the "Read 3 Get 1 Free"
promotion again (and you can
see what books we have for
giveaway by the reference
desk), as well as a weekly or
bimonthly prize drawing, depending on how many participants we have. Like last year,
there will be a pamphlet you
will fill out with the information
and short reviews of the three
books you've read to cash in on
your prize. Every time you turn
in a pamphlet, you can enter
your name for the prize drawing.
There is some interest in starting a teen writing group. As of
right now, the library's writing
group is 18+, and some TAB
members would like to write,
share, review, and discuss their
own works. We’ll let you know
when the first meeting will take
place.
Along the same lines, we are
considering holding a fanfiction writing contest at the
library. Are you interested?
Intrigued? Don't know what
fanfiction is but would like to
have an opportunity to win
things? We have some TAB
members who would be more
than happy to explain everything you ever wanted to know
(or didn't want to know) about
fanfiction.
Look for TAB members painting
faces at the Children’s Summer
Reading Program Kick-off party
on Thursday, June 7 @ 2 pm.
We will be holding another car
wash event, the details of
which will be planned at this
month’s TAB meeting.
The biggest news of all is the
impending Teen Advisory
Board reorganization. We will
be appointing teen officers and
creating an attendance sheet to
record your volunteer hours.
June Book Clubs
June 6 - Who Done It? book club Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters. Intrepid spinster heiress Amelia Peabody defies convention to travel to Egypt. Along the
way she rescues a destitute young
woman, foils a kidnapping plot, and
falls in love.
June 12 - This & That book club Abarat by Clive Barker. Candy
Quackenbush of Chickentown, MN,
finds herself in a fantastical world
where each hour of the day is an
island. Accompanied by John Mischief, a man with eight heads, she
must discover her purpose in the
islands of the Abarat and avoid
Christopher Carrion, the Lord of
Midnight.
June 19 - Great Reads book club Iron Lake by William Kent Krueger.
Cork O’Connor is a man beset by
troubles, but he’s an admirable
man: a bend-not-break man. And he
needs to be, because winter brings
a blizzard that covers his small
lakeside town - and buries ugly
things with it. Like nasty secrets
and brutal murder.
June 27 - Classic Re-reads book
club - The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. One of the first English detective novels, this mystery involves the
disappearance of a valuable diamond, originally stolen from a Hindu idol, given to a young woman on
her eighteenth birthday, and then
stolen again. A classic of 19th century literature.
