The day was structured into two halves. In the morning the pupils were all taught the British Parliamentary Debating system and had the opportunity to watch the senior Wellington debating team in action. What was most impressive was that they only had (continued on page 5) Year 6 Visit The Globe and Tate Modern As part of their English and Art curricula, Year 6 spent Tuesday in London visiting The Globe and the Tate Modern led by Janet Dance and Emma Bell. As The Globe is one of my favourite places on earth it is always incredibly rewarding when a rather unsure group of Year 6 children go in and just say “wow!” – On Tuesday many of them were certainly wowed by a space which is so wonderfully crafted, belied by the simplicity of the oak and whitewashed exterior. (continued on page 6) Milestones Trip for Year 1 Year 1’s topic of ‘Toys Old and New’ was brought to life on Thursday when the year group visited Milestones Museum. The children remarked how they felt they had travelled back in time as they walked along the cobbled streets and looked at the buildings from the Victorian period. They took part in two main activity sessions, before exploring the rest of the museum. The ‘Toys’ sessions gave them the opportunity to handle toys from Victorian times through to the present day; some old toys were so special that they had to wash their hands before touching them. The children worked in groups sorting the toys using different criteria, (continued on page 2) Headmaster’s Commendations RS - Miracle Project: Emily Simpson DT - Chocolate Bar Design: Emily Treacher, Sylvia Gobiranjan Creep into the Castle: Theo Attale, Anna Ball, Katie Martin, William Partridge, Jasmine Hood Cam Party Toy: Lily Hargreaves Essay - Whispering: George Marchant, Harry Yates Pre-Prep Awards 20 Star Certificate: Arthur Bole, Tom Garlinge, Thomas Shephard, Poppy Treacher, Alex Padbury 15 Star Certificate: Ella Pullinger, Deniz Ersoy, Sarah Findell, Dev Atara, Matty Knowles, Edward Webb, Monty Morrison, Joe Cooper, Connor Plummer-Colom, Amy Li, Jarosan Gobiranjan, Ryan Davison, Reception Stars of the Week For an excellent retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears using describing words: Isla Spradbery For excellent story writing about Goldilocks and The three Bears: Leo Ramkissoon, David Garlinge Brace Found Matron has a removable brace which was found just before half term. The Second World War play took the students on a whistle-stop tour through evacuation, rationing and the blitz, as seen through the eyes of a London family between 1939 and 1945. The play was interwoven with voice-overs from Winston Churchill, who roused the nation to stand strong in the face of adversity and face its enemy with courage. The actors encouraged plenty of audience participation too, with the pupils being given opportunities to display their own knowledge of the war. The theatre company were grateful to perform to, ‘such an enthusiastic audience’ whilst the children also gave very positive feedback about their war experience. Jamie Macfarlane Year 1 at Milestones (continued) identifying toys from riddles and placing them along a timeline that spanned 100 years. This caused great nostalgia amongst the adults! The ‘Discovery’ session included a 1930s ‘I Spy’ trail, a ‘Can You Find Me’ poem activity and the most popular activity… dressing up! An exhausting but exciting day was had by all and the children have all gained a deeper understanding of history through the ages. Alison Beavan Congratulations to ... They were fortunate enough to be visited last term by Geraldine McCaughrean whose book, The Death Defying Pepper Roux, was the first book they read and discussed. The Year 8 book group have been reading The Hunger Games by Susanne Collins. The story is set in the future in a post-apocalyptic America, where the heroine, Katniss, works hard to keep her family alive. When her sister is chosen to be sent as a sacrifice, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Meeting Chaired by: Emily Good Mintues by: Harry Yates Prep Schools Debating Day (continued from page 1) 15 minutes to prepare for the debate following audience suggestions. Christopher Perryman’s offer of a debate about nuclear energy received the most votes from the audience and was thus the topic debated by the team. For the first time they were able to see “points of interest” interjected and were amazed with the ease with which the debaters dealt with them. The debate was followed by 40 minutes of group-work where each group was individually led by one of the debating team and taught techniques to create an effective argument. After a delicious lunch, the afternoon session allowed teams to come together and debate various topics. Despite nearly 90 children attending we came up against traditional rivals St Neot’s and had to propose the motion that corporal punishment should be reintroduced in classrooms. Lily Hargreaves led the charge, ably supported by Christopher and Oliver Blease, and it was left to Lucy Webb to do the rebuttal. All four found it was surprisingly challenging to structure their ideas effectively and learnt an awful lot about the art of debating. Nevertheless, they were voted as the winning team which delighted us all. From these debates the top six debaters of the day were chosen and Lucy Webb was very proud to be chosen to be first speaker for the final debate on boxing. To be chosen in the final six out of 90 was an honour, but she rose to the occasion and presented a powerful argument which again led her team to victory. We had a wonderful day, came back with tired but happy brains and I was incredibly proud of the four and their enthusiasm and positive attitude. Vanessa Norton-Edwards Book Review – The Hunger Games continued exhilarating read and a real page turner. We even looked forward to going home to read it – not something you can say about every book! It is the first in a trilogy and at one of the first meetings to discuss the book some people had already finished it and started the second. Currently, it is being made into a film that will be out in the spring. We are hoping it will live up to the standards set by the book. West of England Chess Successes Several of our pupils took part in the West of England Chess Championships held in Swindon last weekend. Benjamin Perryman finished as runner up in the U9 regional Championships winning four of his six matches and drawing the other two. This great result makes Benjamin runner up in both the South of England and West of England competitions this year. Omeet Atara finished fourth in the same U9 event, another fantastic result for Omeet who had also finished as runner up in the South of England championships. Auysh Bose, the reigning South of England Champion, played in the Intermediate, open age group tournament (for children aged 18 and below). Ayush played all his six matches against children older than him and finished fourth, with four out of a possible 6 points. He also won a cash prize for being the best U10 player. Congratulations to all three boys. Wednesday Afternoon House Matches Globe and Tate Modern (continued) Before the pupils had the chance to experience this grand scene, however, they had the opportunity to take part in a Romeo and Juliet workshop in the rehearsal rooms under the guidance of RSC actors. At first uncertain, they found voice and stature in playing Shakespearian archetypes: the King, the warrior, the lover. The actors were impressed by the pupils’ behaviour and their knowledge of Shakespeare and his times. Following the workshops, the “reveal” of the stage occurred and the children all listened intently as the history of the space and the intricacies of Elizabethan theatre were explained to them. They were fascinated that over 3000 members of the public would be crammed in for a performance and that for the “groundlings” (the audience in the standing space in front of the stage) could actually lean on the stage itself! Only a little time was left for a quick visit to the shop where many replica daggers and quills were purchased. The response from everyone was overwhelmingly positive and this enthusiasm will stand them in good stead as we work through Romeo and Juliet in class this term Vanessa Norton-Edwards During Year 6’s visit to the Tate Modern Gallery on the South Bank, we saw a variety of modern art, including traditional paintings by Picasson and Monet as well as sculptures such as those by Joseph Beuys. The children were amazed by the massive scale of Tacita Dean’s installation ‘Film’ which is a 13 metre high projection of a montage of analogue film images displayed in the darkened Turbine Hall. Afterwards the children had the opportunity to sketch in the galleries. Emma Bell Staff Profile - Angie Hall What do you do at Yateley Manor? I am a Reception class teacher. What did you do before working here? I taught in a farm school in Normandy (Surrey not France). We had a donkey called Christmas, four sheep and lots of other small animals and birds. The animals were able to just wander in and out of the classrooms. How long have you been here? This is my tenth year here. Where in the world do you want to go and see and why? I would like to go back to America and drive through Yellowstone Park to see the geysers and the bears. What is the best advice you have been given? Never give up. What is the strangest thing that has happened to you? I was born with two thumbs on one hand. Is there anyone who inspires you/is your hero? Marion Lucas who was a reception teacher here when I first started at Yateley Manor. Her happy demeanour and calmness made me aspire to be as good a teacher as she. If you had to do a job other than this one, what would it be (regardless of qualification or skills needed) I would really love to be a personal shopper. So if you need a new outfit let me know! What is your favourite book? Probably The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. What is your favourite film and why? Miracle on 34th Street. because I just love Christmas. What music do you like listening to? Michael Buble and Lifehouse. Have you met any celebrities? No If you could drive any car, what would it be? A 1960s Mercedes SL convertible. I would need another car though, for when it rains. Batman or Superman? Batman Custard or Cream? Cream Cats or Dogs? Neither Money or Happiness?. Happiness Mrs Hall by Isla Spradbery Aldershot Farnham and District U13 Netball Another tournament, another freezing cold afternoon for the U13 girls! The weather conditions again played a huge part in the performance of the team. Our first three games against Court Moor, Weyden and Robert May’s were games we should have won, but we were slow to get into our game and made lots of passing errors, giving away possession far too easily which allowed our opposition to be successful. In the next game against Yateley School, however, the girls really picked up their game showing much more desire for the ball, making good interceptions and giving the shooters more opportunities to score. We won the game 6 – 1. The girls continued to play well throughout there next three games, moving faster, getting in good positions and defending well, but we were now up against the three best teams in the tournament and although we worked hard we couldn’t find a win.
