Just for a reminder, we as a lodge have the honor to
host the 201 5 SR-1 B Conclave and it just happens to be
the 1 00th anniversary of the Order of the Arrow. We need
your help to get ready for Conclave and we hope that you
will want to be part of history and you'll be there, too!

11 7 New ordeal members, Let that sink in. That’s a
ton of new members, now our lodge is up to a total of 428
members! Also, during ordeal we had brotherhood
training which we had a total of 38 new brotherhood
members! What a great job you did this weekend. Ordeal
members, you widened Jambo road, you cleared tons of
campsites on Jambo circle, and you widened Jambo
circle as well. I would like to give a big thank you to our
Service Corp. Chairman Jacob Sommers. This was the
man who put together the whole work day from collecting
tools to telling the candidates where to work and when to
work. So next time you see this great hard working man,
just pat him on the back and say great job.
Spring Fellowship
On May 2-4, Yustaga held a super-power packed
Spring Fellowship weekend. With a theme of super
heroes, the Lodge had a weekend of games and fun for
all. There was Lodge Ball, Ultimate, a super hero
costume contest, and patches!
A short Lodge meeting was held to elect a new
Lodge Vice Chief. The previously elected Vice Chief, Ben
Woodbury, had resigned. The Lodge elected Jacob
Somers as their new Vice Chief.

Makeup Ordeal
Twelve youth and two adults went through Ordeal
and became brothers. Some books begin “It was a dark
and stormy night.” Well that’s how the makeup Ordeal
began!
On Jun 6 -7, Yustaga held a makeup Ordeal for the
candidates who were unable to attend the March Ordeal.
After a wet night, the two clans spent time working on
cleaning the lakeside bank of the dam and cleaning
Whipple Circle and the trail to Whipple. Both clans did an
outstanding job! Just before receiving their sashes, the
bottom fell out of the sky! The ceremony team scrambled
and moving the ceremony circle to Big Heart. (A key
phrase to remember in Scouting: Rigid Flexibility!) After
our new brothers received their sashes, it was time for a
feast!

Special Conclave Burgers!
At the recent STSR Workday, our hardworking
Brothers were treated to special hamburgers that were
shaped to match the awards received at the 201 4 SR-1 B
Conclave. At least one Brother took it upon himself to
decorate his burger to resemble the Best Lodge award!

Oshambos report
Choctaw District Spring
Camporee!
We approved our Oshambos patch
design to sell for fundraising. They have
arrived! We used part
of the money made from patch sales
for our call out dinner to welcome our
future brothers into the OA. We will
continue with our patch sales as we
raise the funds necessary to
purchase our Chapter windfeather.
At the Ordeal our Gage Hagan served as Elangomat
and Oshambos assisted in the kitchen.
Since the Ordeal, we have held a Spring Camporee
at Open Pond sponsored by Troop 42. The guys had lots
of fun getting back to the basics.
This year we sent 1 5 to Conclave. Everyone had a
great time. We are planning a lock-in this summer to
enjoy some fellowship and plan our future. This year
Oshambos is hosting the annual Lodge Banquet. We are
nailing down details on the location and menu. As soon
as we have that it will be posted to the Yustaga page.
by Gannon Woods
This March, the Choctaw OA chapter
hosted the Spring Camporee. Our theme was
the Yukon. To fit into this theme, we included
events and skills that reflected what one might encounter
in the Yukon as well as necessary scout skills. The events
included: two-man saw cutting contest, bridge the river,
first aid, scare the bear, team skis, water race, and buddy
through the ice. In the two man saw event, the scouts had
to cut a section out of a large pine tree with the fastest
average speed. For bridge the river, scouts had to tie and
cross a rope bridge over a “freezing” creek to escape at
pack of hungry wolves. In first aid a scout was caught in
an avalanche and the patrol had to treat his injuries and
carry him out. Scare the bear was one of the favorites for
the event. The patrol had to use a large slingshot to
launch water balloons at a “bear” to scare it away from
the camp. Team skis required the patrol to work as one
coherent body as they attempted to walk across the
“snow” while on a pair of skis that held five people. Water
race was a patrol relay that had scouts carry buckets with
holes to fill up a water reservoir. Finally buddy through the
ice had the scouts rescue a buddy from freezing water
and treat him for hypothermia. This was all conducted on
Spanish Trail Scout Reservation and was stretched out
across the newly cut trail to allow an adventure and trial
of skills. At the end of the trail events, all the troops came
to the athletic field for dog sled races. The troops were
tasked with building a dog sled that would race through
the course. The “dogs” were blindfolded scouts who were
led by their musher. Though some sleds veered into the
trees, most teams succeeded. The fastest time by far was
an impressive 47 seconds. After the races, the patrols
were tasked with setting up a camp in less than 1 5
minutes. This required burning through a string,
constructing a flag pole, and setting up a tent. The fastest
time for this event was just at 1 3 minutes. The night was
finished off with a cobbler social and a goodnight’s rest.
The event had some problems (as any event does), but
the fantastic OA staff members that volunteered worked
hard to make sure the event was a success for the 250
plus campers that came. Without their service, the event
would have been a failure and because of that I give my
sincere thanks to my brothers in service for making it so
wonderful.

Appalachee News
Appalachee Chapter welcomed 28 new Ordeal
members at STSR this year. We had 28
members join us for our March Chapter
gathering featuring an OA carnival
theme exposing all aspects of the Order
of the Arrow.
During April, our chapter had 28
contingent members travel to Camp
Seminole, Starkville, MS, for Conclave. Our Chapter’s
Pre-Ordeal Ceremony team placed 1 st in competition.
Also, Bryce Segler won the Vigil Ceremony competition.
Our most recent Chapter gathering was a lock-in with 22
members in attendance during which we had a time of
fellowship with food, drinks, and games. Also, NOAC
201 5 and upcoming events such as service projects were
discussed.
At the Spring Fellowship weekend, Appalachee
Chapter brought 1 6 members who competed and overall
had a great time. We look forward to the make-up Ordeal
and gaining new members and hosting our Summer
Social.

NOAC 201 5 - Sign Up Now
How often can you say that you celebrated in the
1 00th anniversary of something? Well, NOAC 201 5 will
be your chance! From August
3-8 approximately 1 0,000
Arrowmen will do just that on
the campus of Michigan State
University. Our Order’s birthday
party will be a must attend event. Whether you have
been to ten NOAC’s or none, you will not want to miss
this one. We have set a goal of taking 75 people from
our Lodge and 300 from our section. We are currently
taking deposits and would love to add YOU to our
contingent.
Want High Adventure?
The opportunities that the Order of the Arrow
provides are abundant but a few of the most exhilarating
are known as OA High Adventure. These programs are
offered at each of the four High Adventure bases:
Philmont, Northern Tier, Sea Base, and the brand new
Summit Bechtel Reserve. Those interested in attending
any of these programs need to contact Bryce Segler
([email protected]) or visit the OAHA website at

National Leadership Seminar
The national leadership seminar (NLS) is a
conference that teaches you some of the greatest
leadership skills that you could ever get. NLS is a
weekend long seminar that will be at camp Beckwith in
Fairhope, Alabama and on Nov 7-9. The price to go is
1 90 dollars you must Register By Oct 24.
NLS will provide:
• A challenging, inspiring, and enjoyable learning
experience
• A better understanding of the skills
of leadership, and how to apply them
• A better understanding of
themselves and of other people
• A realization that, with practice and
work, everyone can improve their
leadership skills
• An understanding that leadership skills work in
tandem with one another
• An understanding that different situations require
the application of different leadership skills
• A model with which to evaluate themselves and
others in the use of leadership skills
Service Project Approval
Have you ever seen something at Camp that needs
repairing, replacing, or perhaps a new something that
could be built and you thought that you would like to take
it on as a service project? Well, what’s stopping you?
But before you make plans, obtain resources, and
enlist the aid of your troop, be sure to get the Camp
Ranger’s approval. Ranger Larry Carter works with the
Council’s Property Committee to prioritize camp projects
across STSR. He will be glad to work with you on what
project needs working on most and might be able to help
line up resources.
If you need ideas for service projects, just ask
Ranger Carter. He can certainly help you find the right
project that needs doing and that can be accomplished
with your work crew and time frame.
Central Lodge: Look’n’Good!
If you have been to Spanish Trails in the past few
days, you’ll notice that Central Lodge is sporting a new
“do”. The walls have been painted and the lights have
been replaced. The lodge is bright, cheery, and feels like
a new building. Responsible for this activity is our very
own brother, Mr. Gary Beadle!
Mr. Beadle, a behind the scenes worker for sure, has
been making improving at the council office and camp for
several years now. After replacing the light fixtures, he
felt that the walls just needed some attention. After
getting council approval, he scrapped and cleaned the
walls and then repainted them in Boy Scout uniform
colors. With an eye for improvements, Mr. Beadle noticed
that when the drink coolers drip, they either splash on the
floor or drip into rusty buckets. Neither is very attractive.
He designed and constructed a shelf with a splash guard
that will allow Scouts to get bug juice and not make a
mess on the Lodge floor.
If you see something at camp that you think needs
improvement, don’t gripe. Do like Mr. Beadle, draw up a
plan, get it approved, and you can make a difference.

My Experiences as a New Arrowmen
writing this article today.
When Sunday morning came, I woke to breakfast and
an inspiring chapel sermon. After the sermon, came the
final award ceremony! Yustaga did it! We won the Best All
Around Lodge Award and I don’t think I could have been
any more proud! GO YUSTAGA!!! Unfortunately, the end
of a great weekend was finally upon me. With great
apprehension we all said our goodbyes to new friends
and started once again on the long seven hour ride back
home.
These were just a few of my many amazing
experiences as a new Arrowmen and I know there are
many more to come!
By Rainey Basinger
It’s the night of March 7th. It’s cold outside and I don’t
know what to expect. The secrecy is almost killing me. I
stand frozen in front of the STSR Dinning Hall with 5
other guys who are also assigned to my Clan for the
weekend. Eventually, they lead us off in eerie silence
down some path to where four men are dressed in Native
American regalia. This is the weekend we all come to
know as Ordeal.
As I look back on that weekend I remember it with
great fondness. Arduous labor with scant food and a good
attitude really does show us how to be a brotherhood of
cheerful service. For this weekend is literally what the OA
is all about. Though life will always throw hardships and
obstacles in our way, we should always be abundantly
willing to help someone out in cheerful service; even if it
may not be beneficial to us. This to me, is the greatest
experience and underlying meaning of being a member of
the Order of the Arrow.
Let’s fast forward to more recent times though. This
past April, I was lucky enough to get to attend Section
SR-1 B OA Conclave. Again, I found myself not knowing
what in the world to expect. After driving 7 hours (longest
7 hours of my life) from Lynn Haven to Camp Seminole in
Starkville, Mississippi, I was greeted by nothing less than
a swamp. After setting up my tent in half foot deep mud,
we started off to get some evening chow. Of course after
dinner I came to learn of a somewhat famous event
(understatement) that Arrowmen love to participate in. We
all know this event as patch trading. Some Arrowmen had
20 patches, others had 2000 patches. Either way, I had
absolutely no idea what was going on so I just decided to
hit the hay after the cracker barrel.
I awoke bright and early Saturday morning to a
delicious breakfast and then an assembly. We learned
from the previous evening that there will be four block
session classes that members from our lodge must
attend in order to help win the Best All Around Lodge
Award. The classes I took were Venturing 1 01 , Team
Building, Chapter Leadership and the most delicious of
all, Dutch Oven Cooking. After the four block sessions,
we got fed once again and thus started arguably the most
important activities of the day. By this I mean the Lodge
vs. Lodge games and sports.
Needless to say, Yustaga dominated in many of the
games! If I remember correctly, we won first in Youth
Lodgeball, Ultimate Frisbee, Spades, and a couple others
I’m probably forgetting. Second and Third places also
came in great abundance for Yustaga! All in all, we did
pretty well in most of the sports and games.
Just when I thought everything was about over, came
Founders Festival. For those who don’t know what FF is,
just imagine a large festival where each Lodge sets up
posters and flags commemorating the history of the lodge
with food, games, and fun! Of course, Yustaga’s was
fantastic!
After FF and voting on Section Officers, we all
marched down and had the weekend gathering themed,
Pause and Look Back on Scouting. I loved every minute
of it because it gave me a chance to sit and think about
all the events and people that have helped me get where
I am today in scouting. Without them, I would not be
June 201 4
Where did the cool 201 5 NOAC
emblem come from?
Nathaniel Kelton is the designer of
our centennial logo and totem. Kelton
is from Troop 466 of Huntsville,
Alabama and the Coosa Lodge.
Having completed his Ordeal last year
and recently becaming a Brotherhood
member in our organization; he is a
very excited about the OA. Nathaniel
is a Life Scout and serves as an OA
troop representative. Additionally, he
serves as an Elangomat in his lodge
and worked on summer camp staff at Camp Sequoyah
last summer. Kelton's idea for the totem originated in art
class at Virgil I. Grissom High School. Taking his original
idea home, he added to the design, then submitted it to
the OA's 1 00th Anniversary Identity Contest last fall.
Nathaniel said that he loves the symbolism included in
the design. The wheel symbolizes the never-ending cycle
of service in our Order and our united rolling forward
motion into the next century. The white arrow on the red
background represents the special sashes that
participants will receive at the 201 5 NOAC. Moreover, the
three W's formed by the
wheel's spokes and the
corners of the triangle
represent Wimachtendienk
Wingolauchsik Witahemui.
Lastly, the triangle in the
center is the symbol for the
Vigil Honor, our Order's
highest membership level and
exemplary to service for all.
Driving to Camp Jambo?
The camp ranger has asked that when you drive to
Camp Jambo, please "stay to the right" and use the road
as if it is a two lane road, not a single lane. This will help
to stablize the road surface for two lane traffic.
How to Celebrate 201 5? With Patches
of Course!
5
At the June LEC meeting, several patch designs
were approved for the 201 5 OA year. If you are a patch
collector, stand by. If you have a empty place on your
patch jacket, you’re gonna love 201 5! With the Lodge
events, Event pass, Conclave, Host Lodge flap, 201 5
anniversary flaps, NOAC flaps, and even a
commemorative OA themed council strip, 201 5 could be
considered the Year of the Patch!

Broken Arrow:
Mr. Ted Spangenberg, Sr.
Conclave 201 4 Reunites Two Veterans
by Mr. Michael Cole
The Gulf Coast Council has lost one of our most
influential Scout leaders. On May 1 2, Mr. Ted
Spangenberg passed away. Commonly called “Mr. Ted”
and occasionally “Ted the Great” by youth and adult
Scouts, Mr. Spangenberg has been involved in Scouting
for 77 of Scouting’s 1 04 years. He is an Eagle Scout and
has served as Scoutmaster of Chipley’s Troop 39. He has
been a key member of the Spanish Trails Summer Camp
staff and Cub Scout Family
Camps for 28 years. A Vigil
member of Yustaga Lodge,
Mr. Spangengberg was
selected by the youth
members to be the Adult
Arrowman of the Year for
201 3.
Mr. Ed Kuykendall of Columbus, MS, was honored
with the Lifetime Achievement award by Watonala Lodge
of the Pushmataha Area Council at this year’s Conclave
held April 11 -1 3th at Camp Seminole located in Starkville,
MS. Ed was recognized for his many years of service to
not only Scouting and the Pushmataha Area Council. He
was also recognized for his many years of service to our
country as a member of the United States Marine Corps
as a helicopter aviator including serving during the
Vietnam War and garnering distinguished meritorious
service awards. Ed’s two sons were present to enjoy
seeing their father receive the award during the Friday
evening opening show hosted by Watonala Lodge.
A Yustaga arrowman in attendance for the Friday
night show recognized Mr. Kuykendall as the gentleman
that his own father had served with in the Marine Corps
had often spoken highly of Mr. Kuykendall as a fellow
pilot. Therefore, with a quick phone call to Mr. Wayne
Cole of Starkville, MS., a reunion of two former helicopter
pilots that served together for several years occurred at
Camp Seminole on Saturday morning during Conclave.
Ed and Wayne first met each other as members of the
2nd Marine Airing as a part of the 2nd Marine Division
serving in Southeast Asia during the middle to late
1 950’s. Later both helicopter pilots were assigned to
HMX-1 squadron located at Quantico, VA., serving as
pilots of the “Marine One” helicopter carrying President
Dwight D. Eisenhower.
These two fine veterans exemplify the values that
Scouting and the Order of the Arrow represent and their
families are thankful for an opportunity to enjoy their
reunion during our SR-1 B conclave.
Fall Pow Wow is Coming
On September 1 2-1 4, Yustaga will hold our annual
Fall Pow Wow at STSR. Make you plans to be there for
training, fellowship, food, and entertainment. At Pow
Wow, a Lodge meeting will be held to elect Lodge
Officers for the OA 1 00th anniversary year of 201 5. Your
input is crucial to select Lodge leadership! Afterwards,
Chapter meetings will be held to elect Chapter leadership
for 201 5. then Arrowmen of the Year elections. Oh my,
how can we put this much into one weekend? Are you
interested in being a Lodge or Chapter Officer? If so, get
with your Chapter Adviser for details on how “throw your
sash in the ring!”
Details will be out soon and registration will be
available through the lodge website.
STSR Workday
On June 7th, Yustaga
brothers assembled at STSR to
help prepare the camp for
Summer Camp. Work crews
were seen erecting tents all
over camp. This is a great
opportunity to help the camp staff to prepare for
campers. This year STSR held three Summer Camp
weeks and one Cub/WEBELOS Resident Camp.
Great Opportunity for YOU!
