Roaring over the limestone of the canyons, the water has helped
to create impressive, vertical walls; sharp crests such as the Ciudadela de Mascún; acute spires such as Cuca de Bellosta; and
deep hollows (known locally as foraus or portals) such as those
at Cunarda and Ventana de Mascún. A remarkable WORLD OF
MINERALS.
The impressive cliffs are colonized by unique and specialised
PLANTS, some of which are only found in the rocky environment
of the Guara canyons. They have adapted to withstand drought,
a scarcity of soil, the force of gravity and the extreme variations in
temperature.
It consists of descending along the river bed and bravely crossing
the many obstacles formed by the steady erosion of the water;
deep pools; high waterfalls; rocky ledges; huge deposits of stones
(fondly called “chaos”) and narrow cavities, all of which have to be
tackled along with strong currents.
In order to overcome the difficulties, techniques used for potholing
and rock climbing are used and because of this, the use of specialist equipment and a professional guide is strongly recommended.
There are many places in Guara where it is possible to experience
the unrepeatable sensation of being carried by the water - swimming, jumping and sliding – in places such as Mascún, Gorgas
Negras, Vero and Peonera.
Due to its huge potential and the variety of its canyons the Sierra
de Guara is recognised as the birthplace of canyoning at an international level. More than 60 CANYONS hidden in the mountain
range boast different lengths and various levels of difficulty in terms
of physical and technical preparation. They offer varied landscapes, spectacular scenery and diverse attractions.
In addition to the so-called GR 45, a long circular route through
Somontano, many shorter walking paths criss-cross the region
to weave a comprehensive network of SIGNPOSTED ROUTES.
A good number of them are found around the villages of Alquézar,
Bierge, Rodellar, Colungo and in the south of the region.
Some of the routes are educational and display information tables
and panels; these are easy and straightforward and are designed
as a way for families to enjoy nature. Other routes follow old, historical paths once used by hunters, workers, charcoal miners and
shepherds. There are also many sporting routes of different lengths
with important level changes along the way; the effort involved is
more than compensated for with magnificent views.
Somontano is a diverse territory that offers cyclists a variety of landscapes in just a few short kilometres. From sub-alpine areas to Mediterranean scrubland; green thickets to semi-deserts; dark canyons
to sunny riverbanks; the bustling city to the peace of tranquil villages
or the solitude of a rural chapel. Somontano reveals many worlds in
one small area, all of which are easy accessible by bike.
There are several ROUTES cover a good part of the region. There
are tracks of varying difficulty in terms of climb and length of the
route. All are circular and can be followed in either direction and
many are interconnected allowing cyclists to cover routes of 65 km
in length.
The SOMONTANO NATURAL ROUTE, a spectacular footpath that
stretches over 50km, takes visitors into a unique environment in
terms of landscapes as well as historical, cultural and natural values. It is ideal for everyone. The full route can be undertaken in 3
stages or it can be used to create shorter itineraries that doubleback along the same section.
The natural architecture of stone and rock is the dominant feature of the
landscape in the NORTHERN expanse of SOMONTANO. The majestic Lammergeyer (Gypaetus barbatus), one of the rarest birds of prey
in Europe, glides gracefully over the sheer cliffs of Guara. Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus) form colonies where breeding pairs share space with
young adults and venerable, elder birds alike. The list of carrion-eating
birds is completed with the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus).
There is also an abundance of red and black kites (Milvus milvus, Milvus nigrans) and the fast and agile Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus).
The queen of the birds is the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), which is
raised from young in the precarious niches of the rocky walls, as is the
Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo).
The rich array of birds of prey also includes an interesting group of forest species such as the Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), the Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) and the European roller (Coracias garrulus).
ON THE BANKS OF THE RIVERS visitors may be lucky enough to see
the Grey Heron (Ardea cinere), the Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and the
White-throated Dipper (Cinclus cinclus). The presence of these exquisite
birds is an indication of clean rivers, free of contamination.

Fans of heights and the feel of rock under their feet will be delighted with
the magical and inimitable cliffs of Somontano. It is a magnificent place
to practise the white-knuckle sport of rock climbing and the more gentle
option of via ferratas.
Totally different species of bird inhabit the SOUTHERN STRETCHES OF
SOMONTANO. The dry, earthy terrain and semi-arid gullies are home to
birds that are perfectly adapted to difficult conditions such as drought and
extremes of temperature. These include the Stone Curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus), the Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, (Pterocles alchata), the Black-bellied
Sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata) and the Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax).

The power of the rivers is reflected in the landscapes and is best
appreciated on foot; on the way to the Balced peak; in the Mascún
canyon or at the springs of Tamara and el Puntillo. Gorgas Negras,
the Fornazos narrows, the Fornocal gorge, the dark depths of Balced and the Vero canyon, are legendary names in the long list of
Guara canyons. Their breathtaking beauty has brought the area
fame as a paradise for lovers of adventure sports.

VIA FERRATAS are vertical routes that allow easier access across rock
walls and cliffs due to special grips provided along the way. Ladders,
bridges, metal staples attached to the walls, chains, fixed handrails and
the corresponding security cable allow visitors to discover hidden corners of Somontano that would otherwise be unreachable. There are 2
via ferratas that are ideal for beginners; those of Espolón de la Virgen del
Castillo in Rodellar and Peñas Juntas in Bierge.

The area around Rodellar is a true paradise for lovers of rock climbing
because has more than 300 routes. Another interesting place for climbing practice is the mountaineering school in Alquézar. A dedicated
sporting school with seven distinct sectors. It has 100 different routes
with a few low and medium grades but with the majority suitable for
experienced climbers. The deep ravine of Olvena is an area of assorted
and irregular rock types, where classic, technical rock climbing can be
practised. There are numerous vertical cliffs as well as smooth walls of
rock that do not quite reach the 90º angle, allowing a challenging and
exciting ascent.

The River Vero Cultural Park was established in 2001 in recognition
of the remarkable wealth of assets within this unique area that reflect
variety, quality and harmonious integration in a natural environment.
Its privileged location between the lower mountain ranges of the Pyrenees and the foothills of Somontano affords the area RICH LANDSCAPES and a natural environment of great quality.
The deepest of the mountain ranges hide more than 60 shelters
that boast an array of cave paintings, which together have been
declared a WORLD HERITAGE SITE. Through these enigmatic
representations of a variety of signs and animals, prehistoric societies gave expression to their creativity, their beliefs and their
knowledge.
In the higher stretches, between Lecina and Alquézar, the river has
sculpted rough walls, rocky cliffs and spectacular gorges colonized
by unique plants and inhabited by an infinite array of birds of prey. This
northern sector also makes up part of the Natural Park of the Sierra
and Canyons of Guara. Further south the river enters the valley. The villages of Huerta, Pozán de Vero and Castillazuelo stand proudly on its
banks among rolling landscapes, vegetable gardens and vineyards;
quintessential Mediterranean.
This great haven of rock had magical significance for the Paleolithic
hunters (22,000 years ago) as well as for Neolithic and Bronze
Age man. They all left their mark, the result of which is a relatively
small area of the Vero where it is possible to see all the classic
styles of European prehistoric paintings; Paleolithic, Levantine and
Schematic art.
ALQUÉZAR; the impressive castle, collegiate church and medieval villa
rise majestically from the River Vero canyon in a natural environment of
wild beauty. Towers and fortified walls; chapels and traditional architecture; ice wells and cave paintings; legends of maidens, wanderers and Moorish kings; hiking routes, rock climbing and adventure sports; the mythical descent of the River Vero…all of this can be found in Alquézar. Wander
through narrow streets and alleyways; pause in a porch-lined squares;
climb to the fortified enclosure; travel back in time amongst the Romanesque carvings of the cloister; marvel at the beauty inside the church
of Santa Maria and be moved by emotion before the image of Christ of
Lecina. Alquézar offers an endless array of unforgettable sensations.
Following the course of the river reveals a LEGACY OF FORMER
COMMUNITIES that once inhabited its banks, from Paleolithic times
until the present day. Prehistoric cave art; ancient dolmens such as
Caseta de las Balanzas in Almazorre; romanesque chapels such as
Treviño in Adahuesca; gothic churches such as Barbastro cathedral;
baroque temples such as Dulcis in Buera; the remains of hilltop fortresses and rural compounds such as Lecina and the historical complex of Alquézar. Not forgetting the many myths and traditions as well
as hand-crafted produce such as oil, honey and wine.
During the summer, Easter, Christmas and long weekends, there
are guided visits to the caves at Arpán, Barfaluy and Mallata; in
spring and autumn, at weekends, and the rest of the year, visits
can be arranged. The routes round the caves that can be visited
are signposted, have information panels and easy access.
The departure point for a magical prehistoric journey that takes in
the splendour of the cave art is the Colungo Visitor Centre.
BARBASTRO; since its foundation in the 9th century, has held the title of
capital of Somontano. The city offers the visitor a chance to step back
into its history and to get to know the people and communities that have
left their mark here. The attractive complex of San Julian and Santa Lucia
is the perfect starting point from which to discover the delights of the city
and region of the River Vero. It is the home to the local Tourist Information
Office, the Somontano Designation of Origin Wine Zone and the Somontano Visitor Centre. The cathedral complex brings together the most emblematic monuments of the city; the Majestic Cathedral of the Assumption (16th century) with its impressive bell tower (16th - 18th century) and
the Episcopal palace; headquarters of the Diocesan Museum.
The main Calle Mayor takes the visitor through the era of the Renaissance
with striking buildings such as Casa Latorre (now headquarters of the
University of Distance Learning) and the Argensola Palace. It finishes in
the Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) where a bustling food market
is held every Saturday. The most picturesque views of the city and its
many bridges can be enjoyed from the area around the church of San
Francisco. Close by, is the monumental Ice Well of Barbacana, which
was constructed in the 17th century and is now home to an interesting
visitor centre.

The SOMONTANO WINE ROUTE offers the visitor a chance to discover the area through a careful selection of charming establishments
including urban and rural hotels and a variety of bars and restaurants.
Traditional cooking and contemporary cuisine are perfectly matched
with quality wines from local wineries. The excellence of their wines
is highlighted further during an unforgettable visit to one of the many
avant-garde “bodegas” that open their doors to visitors.
In Somontano it is said there is a wine for every occasion, for every
dish and for every person. Through the aromas, colour and character
of the wines the personality of this privileged territory is revealed.
The central area of the region presents a LANDSCAPE that has been
tailor-made by man; a tapestry of different textures and colours that
changes with the seasons. As Somontano shakes off winter the vibrant green of the cereals provides a sharp contrast to the silver of
the olive trees and the white of the almond trees in blossom. At spring
gets under way the vineyards begin to sprout splashes of green; by
autumn this explodes into red, orange and gold before the vines finally
lose their leaves.
Winter is the season for harvesting the olives, used for the production
of the golden liquid of Somontano. Modern mills produce extra virgin
OLIVE OIL from indigenous varieties such as the “alquezrana”, the
“negral” and “verdeña,” which give colour, aroma and flavour to the local gastronomy. Many olive oil mills offer guided visits and informative
tastings, providing a new way to experience Somontano.
