Parochial Vicar
Hello all!
Senior Priests In Residence
Fr. Mike has asked me to write a few segments
of the bulletin regarding the Year of Mercy. Back in
October I offered our staff retreat for the school and
parish on this extraordinary year that Pope Francis has Our Parochial Vicar, Fr. Chuck
called. It is my joy to share in this brief series a few of
the central thoughts of that retreat. This is the second of three parts and I hope to
share about how we can receive more profoundly the Father's mercy in this article.

One of the primary difficulties that we can have with receiving the Father's
mercy, of stepping into the Divine Dance of the Trinity is ourselves. In some dark
place of our hearts we can become convinced of either two things: one is that we
are not in need of the Father's love. This can be expressed by the belief that "I'm not
great but I'm certainly not the worst." While it is laudable to not be the worst, our
God desires us to share in his infinite love unreservedly--there is never the time
when we have entered into God's Love completely. We can always receive more.
The second thought is that there is something in me that God will not or
cannot forgive. Regarding this thought, Pope Francis and Pope Benedict have both
said: "God does not tire of forgiving our sins, it is we who tire of seeking His
mercy." Pope Francis said in the document he produced on the Year of Mercy that
"the mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality with which he
reveals his love as of that of a father or a mother, moved to the very depths out of
love for their child. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that this is a “visceral” love.
It gushes forth from the depths naturally, full of tenderness and compassion,
indulgence and mercy."
Often our experiences of mercy is shaped by the experiences of mercy or the
lack thereof in essential human relationships. The Mercy of the Father is the Mercy
we are intended for. It is to be the paradigm and model in every relationship of our
lives. It is the assumption of the Holy Father that the experience of the God's
infinite Mercy forms us to more generously bestow mercy on one another.
In next week's final installment of this three-part series I will share some
ideas regarding living out the Year of Mercy.
Ta ta for now,

Almighty Father, we are always mindful of the words of St. Paul in 1
Corinthians 4:7, “What do you possess that you have not received?” We
recognize that all we have is a gift from you and in acknowledgment of this
we desire to give you the first fruits of our lives and not the leftovers.
(Exodus 23:19). As your Catholic disciples we recognize that we are united
with our brothers and sisterss in our Diocese of St. Petersburg and with your
Catholic Church which is “Universal.” Bless our common effort as we join
our Diocese In the “Forward in Faith Campaign.” Build us into the disciples
that you wish us to be. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Update
On behalf of Bishop Jorge E.
Serpa, Fr. Cirilo Castro and
myself, we want to express our
Christmas greetings and blessings
for the Year of Mercy to the
community at St. Lawrence.
We raised our goal of $95,000 for
the costs of construction of our
sister parish. We also want to
acknowledge the efforts started by
Fr. Tom Morgan in 2010 and the
continued support by Msgr. Mike
Muhr in 2015. The property has
been fenced, the necessary lumber
for the roof is in storage, and
organizers have set up a reservoir
for water.
We would like to express our most
sincere gratitude to the faithful of
St. Lawrence and the various
donors who used this channel to
contribute from different parts of
United States. May God bless you
and may the Year of Mercy be
filled with joy, peace and God’s
love. —P.

Padre Chuck Dornquast
