Energy Treats In African
Continent, Toward a solution
Africa needs to follow a quick
development plan in electricity sector,
why? because:
• Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most- populous
continent.(about 30.2 million km² , 15% of the world's human population)
• Average electrification rate in Africa is about 41% (Varies from 6% in southern
area to 99% in northern area)
• African countries have master plans for improving electrification rate to the
international level

• Growth in electricity consumption has been high and driven by a high rate of
•
GDP and population growth, increased urbanization and national
electrification programmes.(The demand for power in Africa is estimated to
increase to 1 MW/Capita in 2030)
• The possibility of connecting the Persian Gulf Countries’ Networks to Europe
through Africa
Electricity Demand(GWH)

Electricity Demand(GWH)
How about oil & gas sector?
• Upstream remains the focus of most industry as new
investment is likely to drive reserves and production growth
over the long term.
• Most interest is likely to be focused on west Africa's highly
prospective fields and East Africa's emerging offshore gas fields.
• High oil prices encourages the development of new and existing
resources in Africa.
• Considering high fuel resources in Northern Africa, gas-fired
power plants make a substantial portion of the power
generation capacity in North Africa
• Here we see
the share of
oil & gas and
coal in Africa
for energy
production.
• Significant Gas reserves in Ghana and Nigeria in Western Africa.
• Progress in Kudu Gas Field in Namibia (Kudu Gas-to-Power (800MW)/ Namibia)
• Associated gas in newly found offshore oil fields in countries like Ghana,
Equatorial Guinea and Mauritania,
• Feasibility studies for connecting Egypt to Sudan and Ethiopia in order to import/
export electricity.
• The west Africa Gas pipeline (WAGP) runs from Nigeria through Benin, Togo and
into Ghana.
• Kpone Combined Cycle IPP (340MW)/ Ghana/ Gas from WAGP
• Maria Gleta (80MW)/ Conversion to combined cycle in phase 2 (110MW)/
Benin/ Gas from WAGP
• New natural gas reserves findings in Mozambique in Southern Africa, will
contribute to further thermal power in this region
• Many African countries have untapped
resources for power generation (Water,
Renewables, Natural gas)
• Due to climate changes and water level
fluctuations, African countries are
looking to replace their hydro-electrical
capacity by thermal power plants or
Renewable Energies.
• Thermal power upwards for almost
2/3rd of new generation capacity due
to preference of their faster build times
and lower construction costs.
• For instance in Ghana thermal power
reached from 9% in 2000 to 33% of the
total capacity in 2011
• Here we see
the
diversification
of energy
resources nad
production in
Africa
New Generation
Existing Power Generation
IPPs are active in many African countries
and make up a significant portion of
power generation in Algeria, Egypt,
Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco,
Mozambique, Nigeria and Tanzania. We
think this idea could be more promoted in
order to increase electrification rate in
Africa.
• Investment Environment has generally improved in Africa. Many of these
countries have sought ways to attract investors.
Private Investment in Power Sector By Region
Maintenance and Operation
would be two attractive
issues for active investors to
come to Africa, although the
existing market is not that
much encouraging.
One more important issue in
Africa is water shortage. It
leads us toward a great
prominent market which is
CHP for water desalination.
• Infrastructure is generally
underdeveloped
• Increasing urbanization 
Higher water demand
• Many Countries in Africa, have
fairly serious water supply
concerns
• Demand for desalination in the
rest of the countries projected
to increase by 7.2% per year to
$765mn in 2015
• Algeria has substantially added to its capacity with plans for much more
(Market value forecasted for 2015: $545mn)
• Libya has ambitious desalination plans (market value forecasted for
2015: $200mn)
One other important issue
in energy sector is Rail
and Transportation
which is one of our
business in MAPNA
We can easily see that there would be a good
market for those company which are active in the
field of rail and transportation.
Now let’s look at MAPNA
Capabilities.
