Boots: A Senior Moment
Volume XXII Number XI
Boots: A Senior Moment
by Jeanne Hind
I
remember very clearly the request from Anne,
the Foster Coordinator, asking if someone could
take an elderly cat in. His name was Boots. He
was 20 and his current foster had to bring him back to
Maxfund. This was February 29, 2007. A year before
his owner had had to relinquish him. She brought him
to MaxFund in tears and a foster mom who was in the
office at the time took him home. Now she had to
bring him back.
I wasn’t looking for another cat. Adding Boots would
make for four cats and that seemed like a lot to me.
But I also thought about how it must be for this cat
who was so old. Certainly he would be cared for at
MaxFund, but I felt that he wasn’t going to easily find
an adopter. I’d want someone to care enough about
me to make sure the end of my life was full of love and
comfort. So I said I’d take him in. So Boots has the
great distinction of being a MaxFund cat who never
stayed at the MaxFund which is the beauty of this place.
PAW PRINTS | November 2009
Boots was busy eating in the nurse‘s station when I got
to the shelter. He was very matted, boney and ready to
bite or scratch if you weren’t doing what he wanted.
He arrived at my home and spent a week in the guest
room as I learned about him and my other cats
learned there was a newcomer.
All my cats seemed to know he was the senior cat.
They deferred when he came to eat and he tested each
bowl of food much to their dismay. Soon after taking
him in I was jolted by his having a seizure. I’d lost
another cat to some sort of seizure and was in a total
panic as I held him. But he came out of it and the very
first thing he wanted to do was eat. A visit to Dr.
Larson at the Wellness Clinic didn’t really determine
his health issues but we did learn that he had a bullet
in him! I wish he could tell me his story.
It is now 2009 and Boots continues to live happily in a
home now complete with two dogs and three cats. If
Boots were human he’d be called an “old codger.” He
does what he wants, eats when he wants, has taken up
residence in my recliner and vows not to give it back
to me until he is ready to go over the Rainbow Bridge,
which he isn’t planning on for a while. He wants to
make some sort of record on oldest cat from the
MaxFund. He scratches when he tired of my brushing
him and had the speed of a young cat when testing out
his claws. A special event for him is to join me in the
backyard and bask in the sun.
He is sweet, when he wants to be, and will startle me
with a sudden lick and head rub. I like to think he’s
saying “thanks.” He’s taught me that there is no age
limit on being the perfect cat.

Volunteers of the Month...
SUZANNE CREACY
Suzanne is an amazing
volunteer who has
helped to radically
change the lives of many
of MaxFund’s shy and
scared cats. Although
Suzanne volunteers
throughout the shelter,
she has made the biggest difference in Janet’s
Room—the cat room off the laundry where the shy
and scared cats live. Thanks to her love, patience
and understanding, many of these cats have had a
chance for happiness and homes. Many of them
can now be pet, when previously they feared or
distrusted humans too much. For example, Katia
is a cat who has lived at MaxFund since 2004. She
could not be pet for many years. But thanks to
Suzanne, Katia is now infamous. Anyone who
enters the room is greeted by Katia and her demands
for affection. She enjoys laps now and is fine being
picked up and carried. It’s an amazing transformation!
Suzanne also walks dogs and contributes wherever
she can. Not surprisingly, she has also fostered
kittens for the shelter.
Recently, Suzanne showed her dedication to the
MaxFund cats when one of the cats—Sweet Pea
from Janet’s Room—got out of its adoptive home.
The apartment complex where Sweet Pea lived
was an active area for coyotes and foxes. As soon
as Suzanne heard about Sweet Pea’s escape, she
went daily to look for Sweet Pea. She posted flyers,
talked to neighbors and didn’t give up. She woke
up very early many days in the hopes of catching
Sweet Pea. Finally, after neighbors sighted Sweet
Pea, Suzanne got up in the middle of the night
and spent hours waiting to catch her. She finally
was able to find, trap and return Sweet Pea to
MaxFund, where she had to have surgery due to
bites/abscesses. Sweet Pea is alive because of
Suzanne’s dedication and perseverance!
Thank you, Suzanne, for your amazing heart,
dedication and love! The cats would not be the
same without you!

FROM THE WORLD OF JAKE
Autumn. My favorite time of the year. It's the most beautiful
time of the year. Is is the most grand time of the year, and
that suits my personality. Just lie back and enjoy it. None
of our family is a fisherman, but whenever we invite friends
or family to come down to our one acre pond, they have a
ball. Dad and I just walk around enjoying the scene.
But, getting back to that “serenity” thing, I like the sound
of that. I think I will make everyone call me “Serenity Jake.”
“Serenity Jake” Suro: that really has a ring to it! Maybe I
will have to dig out one of my cowboy hats that have been
in the closet since we moved to South Carolina. Or better
yet, one of those big wide Southern straw hats. And learn
to fish. I'm sure Dad won't mind sitting with me, taking
the fish off the line, and throwing them back in the pond.
It wouldn't do for the younger dogs—always on the move,
places to go, things to do and see. They come back home
all hot, panting, and excited. I come home satisfied and,
yes, serene. I walked just as far as I wanted to, not one
step more. It feels good to know that I can do just about
anything I really want to. But I don’t feel compelled to do
anything! Modern dogs don’t understand that, don’t even
want to understand that. Oh well, let's just take a nap
while we think it over.
Editor’s correction from October: Jake, is an approximately
15-year-old beagle mix with crooked legs and a bad back.

We need volunteers or supporters to donate
backed goods, crafts or saleable items for our

come and select an ornament you can write
your name or your pet’s name for a
donation to the shelter.

A CAT’S UNIVERSE
by Snoopy & Gizmo
The Trip
A
few weeks ago my “Dad” did something he had not done in a long while. He brought in the
dreaded travel bag. You know the one I am talking about, where he puts in a bunch of his stuff
and then is gone for what seems like forever.
It is bad enough that he is gone all day at work but at least he is home in the evenings and that means I
get canned cat food as a treat each night. Not sure what work is exactly but it takes him away from me
all day. He says if he does not work then I get NO cat food. Now I know you guys think all we do is
sleep all day, but we do expect you to be there when we want to be scratched or loved.
I digress. He was gone for 3 whole days. No one for me to snuggle up with on the couch and watch TV,
or laugh when I stretch up real high and scratch at the glass in the front door. No one to make a big
deal out of our evening routine of going down stairs to say good night to “Mom” and “Big D.”
Everyone thinks it is funny that “Dad” calls me to come down to say goodnight, but it is no fun if you
are not called so you can act as though you are being dragged down. I will only go as far as the kitchen
where I lay down and wait for the kisses and good-nights to be over. After we are finished I complain to
my “Dad” all the way back up stairs.
Then there is sleeping alone. The water bed is very big and lonely when I have it all to myself. I would never
tell Snoopy that. I chase him off the bed during the day so he does not leave his scent on MY BED.
DAD’S HOME—YEAH!!
Bye, from Gizmo the “Happy Cat.”

The Slippery Slope of Compassion
By Jason Miller
I got stung. Not once, but five times,
spread out over two occasions.
The culprits wasps have nested in the woodwork
of our hottub. I knew they were there pretty
much from the get go, but I told myself that if I
left them alone, they would leave me alone.
Now, after I’ve done a leaping, screaming run
across the yard a couple times, and watched
through the kitchen window as wasps stream
steadily in and out of the hot tub woodwork, I
realize that the situation is nearly out of hand.
It's not only me I have think about, after all;
there are the other members of my family,
including our dogs (both rescues!). I believe this
year the first autumn frost is going to bail us out,
but the wasp experience has been enough to
remind me of the slippery slope all of us who
care about any kind of animal are on.
I, like many of you, am given to correcting people who refer to “mean dogs.” There may be
grouchy dogs, I’ll say, but not mean; there are, of
course, dogs who live has taught to react in
aggressive ways. But, in this culture, dogs, cats,
and sometimes birds, are animals with which
most of us claim to share a kinship.
I know there are no
such things as mean
wasps, although that’s
not exactly what I’m thinking
when I leap the fence and scream for my next
door neighbor—who is watering his lawn—to turn
the hose on me.
Later, as I again gaze out the window at the scene
of my second attack, I realize that in the spring
I’ll have to face the question of whether or not
the hottub—indeed, the very yard in which it sits
—belongs to me, or to wasps. They come in and out
of the woodwork, going about their lives, biologically
bound to the duties of the family of community
in ways less complicated but, generally speaking,
not so different than the same familial and cultural
responsibilities that guide us through our own.
And I imagine myself, clad perhaps in thick coat
and sweatpants, aiming a thick stream of poison
from the death can, and I feel a sincere sense of guilt.
Perhaps this moment must come. Then again,
perhaps it never will. And yet, even the question
itself tells on those of who claim to a care for a
single non-human creature. We’re on slippery
slope of compassion, and even should we on
occasion get stung, isn’t it a better place to be?
The perplexing question is, if you can look into
the eye of a pet and see thought and emotion—
the same stuff as makes up any soul—then is it
not possible to conceive of yourself having similar feelings for a non-traditional American pet,
such as, say a pig or goat? Thoughts like that can
turn your eating habits on their head.
And where do they end? With the four legged
and the feathered? What about the garter snake
or the garden toad?
Of course, we all have our favorites, not just in
terms of species, but in terms even of breeds, or
size, or coloring. Still, association with any of
the non-human creatures has to bring all of them
into another kind of focus, one that does not just
allow for, but demands, more carefulness, more
concern, more compassion.

MAXFUND’S
MAILBAG
Dear MaxFund Friends,
Dear MaxFund,
Dear MaxFund,
Thank you very much for all of the
love and care you gave me during
the month I was there!
This is long overdue. Almost a year
ago we adopted “Giffie” which we
named Tanner. I wanted to give you
an updated picture of our “big” dog.
Tanner is the best dog ever! He is
almost 90 lbs. he is a love, he enjoyed a
beach vacation this summer and he
loved the ocean! He enjoys going to
the office during the week chillin
with my boys after school and sleeping
with my 4 year old. If you ask my 4
year old who his best friend is he
answers, Tanner!
My people celebrated my one year
arrival to my new home with
yummy treats and biscuits.
I absolutely love my new home!
My Mommy and Daddy are so
happy that I chose them. I get so
many kisses.
I have a wonderful home and a
huge back yard to run and play in.
I just love my Brother, Gabe. I
follow him all over the yard. If he
sniffs something, I sniff it, if he
goes around the bush, I do the
same. I want to be just like him. I
have enclosed a picture so you
don't forget how adorable I am!
Thank you for introducing us to the
best dog ever!
Sincerely, N, R, N & W & Tanner
Love Always,
Tootsie
Over the last year I completed Dog
Training through advanced and
will take Canine Good Citizen Test
in October. I enjoyed going to
school! I made lots of friends.
My people also checked out my
DNA. I am half Chihuahua and
half Pekinese. My doctors and
friends made lots of bets as to
what I was. Who knew!
My cats are fine! We love hanging
out on the bed while our people
are at work!
I have taken several trips, as well.
I've been to New Mexico!
I will keep you updated!
Thanks, Liam Archuleta

Dear MaxFund,
It has been about one year since I
adopted Nicci & Artemis from your
shelter. Both cats are doing extremely well and they love their forever
home. Artemis has very advanced
asthma but it is completely under
control. I administer inhalers to
him twice a day and you would
never know he even had asthma.
Nicci was a terrified cat who took
much time to adjust to her new
home. Now she is sweet and loving
and will let people pet her. She
loves to be brushed and combed.
Both cats have come a long way
since I brought them home. I love
them very much and they both seem
very happy and comfortable here.
Sincerely,
Timi Biermann, Nicci & Artemis
loves to be in the backyard watching
and chasing birds and squirrels. He
sleeps in a round cat bed near my bed
but loves sleeping on my lap best.
Thanks to all who loved and cared for
Ghandi and Papou while they lived
there. Papou had a fractured hip
which was repaired there, and it does
not slow him down at all.
Sincerely,
Ann Waite
In the good news category, we’ve
discovered a common love for car
rides, hiking, lounging on the couch
and going on long walks around our
neighborhood. We also enjoy
visitors and some of us really really
enjoy bringing each individual toy to
our visitor in turn. We also enjoy
going to PetSmart and picking out
said toys...so “we” can destroy them
15 minutes later.
Attached is an updated picture of
the gracie-pup. Thanks again for
allowing me to adopt her. She’s an
absolute doll and the best
companion dog a girl could have.
Thanks,

Hello MaxFund!
Nicci & Artemis
Dear MaxFund Friends,
I adopted Baby Khaki (Chihuahua)
in May. He is now named Papou.
We are working on "his issues" and
he has graduated from obedience
classes (not with honors though).
He has joined the household
which includes two cats, Sadie &
Ghandi. Ghandi was a MaxFund
cat who was known as Gandolf
before he was adopted. Papou

I am writing with our 6 month update
(coincidentally to the day, interestingly
enough!). Wombat, who was briefly
Sika, and is now Gracie, continues to
be a great dog, sweetly affectionate
and needy but also very independent.
Since the adoption, we have enjoyed
getting to know each other, even
through the discovery of her
potentially related fear-aggression
(and maybe the cause for what seems
to have been a history of abuse).
We’re working on her fear/aggression
towards other dogs, and would love
any suggestions you might have for
good doggie classes and/or trainers...).
Holiday Gift Wrapping
We will again be providing gift
wrapping in several area book
stores every weekend in December
and on December 24. MaxFund
volunteers have been wrapping
books and other gifts for several
years and this has been a great
fund raiser. If you are able to spare
a few hours during this busy time
of year, please contact Phyllis Eveleigh
at [email protected] or
(303) 973-4031.

“It is with your support that we are able to continue
rescuing the homeless dogs that so desperately need our
help,” says Lori Green, Grants Coordinator at 4 Luv of
Dog. “With so many dogs in our rescue, our costs have
become quite substantial. I can assure you that the funds
provided will be put to very good use.”
Stories like that make us even happier to announce we
are ready to begin our third The Animal Rescue Site
$100,000 Shelter+ Challenge!
Beginning today and each day through December 20th,
you can cast your vote for your favorite participating

that shelter win one of three big prizes, which include a
$3,000 grant for third place; $5,000 grant for second
place; and a $20,000 Grand Prize grant.
In addition to those grants, we’re offering a pair of
$2,000 judged prizes for the most touching story and
photo from a shelter. We know there are plenty of
heartwarming tales of rescued animals out there, so if
you work at a participating Petfinder.com rescue
organization, visit our story page to share your favorite
story and photo today!
The prizes don’t end there. There will be weekly $1,000
grants given, plus $1,000 prizes given to top vote-getters
