Volume XX VII Number IX ZORRO AND BOONE By Tamara Wilkinson I have been meaning to send you all an update! They are amazing! Two little brothers that love each other so much. They will often cuddle together and they play all the time so well with each other. They know their limits. Zorro is a spitfire and so smart, he likes to travel in the car anywhere we go. He loves to cuddle with all of us. I did have to buy a dog purse and he goes everywhere with me. The kids wanted me to tell you Zorro has a harness with a bow tie they love having him wear. We changed Boone’s name to Maximus and call him Max for short. He is the most amazing, sweet, kind dog I've ever met! He hates baths and loves playing. He's totally potty trained and seems to have been from the first week. Zorro still has his accidents :( Max is a great listener and minds so well. He loves his toys and can be a bit of an attention hog. Unfortunately he did manage to slice his master flexor tendon two weeks ago and underwent surgery to repair it. We think he sliced it on a piece of metal on a drain pipe next to their doggy door. We were devastated and felt so bad! The surgeon at Animal Hospital Specialty Center in Littleton took very good care of him. That was a long day for us we were so worried but he’s going to fully recover! PAW PRINTS | September 2015 We love them so much it's hard to describe, they make us so happy! They are great with the kids and other people and dogs too. They have helped filled the hole from losing our little Jack Russell Dodger in December. __________________________________ MOTOR (NOW HERO) UPDATE By Cindy Marder H ero is doing great and has been a fabulous addition to our household. He continues to be a big, silly guy that cannot get enough love from his humans (unless there is a squirrel in the yard). He also adores his dog companion, Willow as they loves to play and wrestle. If not wrestling, he lays next to her and licks her head (kind of gross, but a sweet sign of affection). If not wrestling, he spend his time stalking squirrels in the yard or by staring out the front window. He also loves to play with tennis balls, sleep and of course get a belly rub. We have not seen any anxiety issues, which is great, we have seen typical puppy behaviors which we were expecting. We need to remind ourselves constantly that he is a BIG 1 year old puppy and is still learning. He is picking up, somewhat quickly, the rules and boundaries of our house. We just signed up for some training as he does not always know how to greet other dogs appropriately and think it will be good for the girls to learn some tools in getting him to listen to them. Thanks again for all of your help in helping Hero find his forever home. 1 A ROUND OF A-PAWS FOR A SUCCESSFUL LUCKY MUTT STRUT By Jordan Blakesley O n Sunday, June 7, Maxfund held its annual Lucky Mutt Strut at Denver's Cheesman Park. This year, nearly 300 people and their furry friends showed up for the 5K fun run/walk. Participants received commemorative t-shirts and goodie bags; following the run/walk, they enjoyed pet-friendly vendors, food trucks and family-friendly entertainment. FROM THE WORLD OF GUS By Gus Suro I have tried to write my monthly article and haven’t been able to so far. I even tried to write a poem, but the poem got soggy, and so did the paper I was writing on. So I will just tell you this: Gypsy is acting sick. Not anything like a normal sick, no vomiting or anything you can see. She’s just not herself. I try to cheer her up, but it doesn’t seem to help. Mom and Dad are acting strange too, loving her and hand-feeding her but not acting like they usually do if one of us is sick. My guess is that they don’t expect Gypsy to get well. They give me some special time too but they can’t make me understand. So, I will just ask you for some prayers for Gypsy and save some for me. I am four years old and I have never been without my “older sister.” Participants collected pledges from friends, family members, co-workers and other dog-lovers, and the event raised more than $10,000 for the dogs and cats of MaxFund. A special thanks to Lucky Mutt Strut Sponsors, including Purina Cat Chow, Camp Bow Wow, Mouthfuls, Preferred Properties, Eldorado Water, and The Overton Law Firm. Without your support, and the participation of our runners/walkers, this event would not be possible. How have you been since last month? I had a great month of July. First we had a long drive to a place called Gillette. I enjoyed the place a lot. There were lots of rabbits to watch and we even had one in the RV, well, kinda sorta. We had a “jackalope!” I know, I know, they are not real but they were the theme for this years “Campvention”. Everyone who wanted to made their version of a jackalope and entered it in a contest. Our Jack did not win and was really down for a few days but Mom told him not to worry we were not going to throw him out but he would sort of be recycled. She is going to make costumes for him for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. He was happy to hear that, especially after he heard that there were hunting licenses available to hunt jackalopes. With a costume on he can hide in plain sight. Dad was moving Jack back into the RV when Jack got off balance and the corner of his ear caught the back of Dads hand and tore it open. We know it was an accident but we are saying Jack bit him. Of course July means fireworks! Well, the town of Gillette had their big fireworks show right beside where we were camping. It was really cool. They make lots of noise but they make pretty designs up in the sky. I know a lot of animals do not like the booms the fireworks make but I don’t mind them at all. I don’t think most cats care about the noise as we are pretty laid back. The first boom or two may get our attention but after that, not so much. I guess that’s all for now. Will keep you posted on my fun trips and observations next month. I just wanted to drop you a line to say hi and to let you know that I’m settling into my new home. It’s been 9 weeks since I left you, and it’s been an eventful 9 weeks too! I have met the local Fire Department when I locked the safety deadbolt from the inside! It’s not accessible from the outside so the fire department had to come in through the 3rd floor balcony and unlock the front door. I was very excited for all those people in my home! A couple of days later we made some cookies to say thank you, but I swiped 12 raw ones from the cookie sheet when Kirstin wasn’t looking! Last week I got stuck underneath a parked car chasing a cat. Jon came under the car and untangled my leash. The cat got away, but I know where he lives! I like to share the bed with both Kirstin and Jon, but I’m 89lbs. I’m sorry but if I’m in there first and there’s not enough room for everyone why is that my fault! One day I ate my way of my crate, unlocked the deadbolt, turned the door handle and opened the front door. I went to my neighbor’s apartment and got belly rubs on his couch for an hour until Kirstin and Jon came to get me! I went to a little league baseball game the other day, and I sat in the bleachers and watched the kids play. I was a great hit with all the spectators; I sat very nicely for everyone to pet me, and I even let a 5 year old boy ride me like a donkey! I absolutely LOVE the dog park. There’s a creek and if there is a “runner” dog, I AM the “chaser.” We run up and down, through the water, around the trees and back through the water. I don’t like to sit down and rest there and sometimes I get a little upset when other dogs sit and rest. I went on a road trip to the mountains. I love to hang out the window and let my jowls flap around in the wind. I hiked the mountains in the snow and fell into an ice pond! I laid out in the sun after that to dry off and catch my breath. Kirstin and Jon have since purchased a crate that I’m secure in; I still don’t like to be left alone for a short time but I’m working on my anxiety. Jon made a PAW PRINTS | September 2015 recording for me of both Kirstin and Jon talking. They play it through itunes in the other room so I think they are in that room and haven’t left. I love to ride in the car and hang out the back window. Once I saw a rabbit and jumped out. Luckily there was a police officer who stopped traffic in the intersection so Jon could chase me. Jon said I was very lucky that the officer was there. I haven’t jumped out again…oh except that one time when Jon left me in the car at Safeway when he ran in to get dog food. He left the windows open just enough that I climbed out and searched the isles in Safeway looking for him, and then I saw a huge pile of peaches stacked up on display. Jon managed to grab me before I climbed on top of them. We had to take an unexpected road trip to New Jersery. I slept the entire way because I love the car. Kirstin was concerned that I would get a blood clot in one of my legs so we got out and ran about every 4 hours. Everyone in New Jersey was so excited to finally meet me. I wasn’t too keen on the humidity on the east coast but I was glad that I saw so many rest stops across America! In 2 weeks I’m taking another road trip to Banff National Park, and I’m pretty excited to cross the border into Canada. I will be sure to wear my bowtie, so I look my best when I meet the customs officer. I’m still pretty afraid of the thunder! I have two favorite spots to hide. One is on the kitchen counter in the corner behind the toaster oven, and the other is on the bottom shelf of the pantry. I can open the pantry door by myself, pull out everything on the bottom two shelves and camp out there although sometimes I like to dig through the back. Kirstin and Jon tell me that another world is not back there behind a hidden door, but I think one day I will get there and there will be bunnies for me to chase and nothing but steak for me to eat! I hope you are all doing ok, and one day I’m sure you will all also find your “furever” home Love Chumm!... woof woof 5 MAXFUND’S MAILBAG Dear MaxFund, I want to thank you for giving me one of the greatest gifts and joys of my life. In March 2002 I came to Maxfund looking for a dog. There was a black lab that had had their broken leg fixed and was in the process of healing. I had some questions and doubts; I was told she was probably around 5 years old. I wa Dear MaxFund, We adopted a dog, Sofia from you almost a year ago (July 26). I just wanted to let you know what an amazing dog she is and how happy we are. She loves to cuddle, go for walks, and ride in the car…just about anything! She sleeps at the foot of the bed, underneath the covers - happy to be there all night without a peep. She dances, cuddles with our other dog, and her favorite thing is to be held like a baby and have her tummy rubbed. We had never had a small dog before, and were a little Leary but our 12 year old daughter talked us into it (she is her dog), and we love her so much. I am attaching a picture in case some of your staff wants to see how she is doing. Thank you so much for all that you do for animals, and for bringing this perfect little girl into our family. Sara Merkel & Kate Bain (daughter) Dear MaxFund, given the option of fostering her so I took it. Deep in my heart I knew I would not be able to part from her. So, Gracie (Annie at the time) and I went home and started our new lives together. She was a beautiful black lab whose fur on the head was as soft as velvet. She was my dear sweet companion for over 13 years. Last Saturday, I said my goodbyes to her. I miss her terribly and there is a hug hole where she was. She was greatly loved and greatly grieved. Thank you for my Gracie, Nancy Cain In early March, or 14 year old dog died. We donated all his food to MaxFund, and planned to wait a few weeks before getting a new doggie for our home. However, in two days, our cat Melvin, who had been with our dog all his life, barely ate and slept all the time - not like our extremely social kitty. So we went that same week back to MaxFund, and were introduced to a little boy your team had re-named “Zip.” We fell in love with him, and just a day or so later, our boy that we call Simon - or Wee Simey as most call him - became part of our family. It took a single day before our cat was back to his normal happiness. These two play all day and share their favorite spot in front of the fireplace on breaks between playing. We love this little doggie with all our hearts. Thank you again! Julien Sharp & Alexandra MacLean Big Mel & Wee Simey Continued on page 7 PAW PRINTS | September 2015 6 Mailbag continued from page 6 Hello MaxFund, Thanks for reaching out! Jimmy is now named Moose and has won over our hearts. We have learned that he loves to play with water hoses, is a little "meh" about going for runs, but is a great hiker, and loves tents. He plays great with other dogs and is best friends with our neighbor's dog, Ace. don't seem to mind that he steps on their toes sometimes. He loves his belly rubbed and sitting on my lap watching a movie. I have attached a few pictures. One in the yard on his favorite chair, wearing his new jersey in anticipation of hockey season (I think he is smiling in this one) and sharing his blanket with Teddy. Thanks again for all you guys did to get him back on his four little feet and ready for a new, brighter, chapter in his life. Renee' and Cody Mary Lane Dear MaxFund, Josie is an amazing dog! The first few days were a bit of an adjustment, but nothing out of the ordinary (she was a little stressed, a little scared, and had an upset stomach). Moose rolling around in the grass Dear MaxFund, Cody is doing fine. I had him back to the clinic for his rabies shot and the vet said he is looking good. He really loves his walks in the park and chasing the squirrels out of the yard. He doesn't like to be left alone so he follows me everywhere. When I can take him with me he loves car rides and exploring new places and meeting new people. I sometimes find him sharing his blanket with the cats and they Cody PAW PRINTS | September 2015 Around the fourth, we quickly learned that she is afraid of fireworks. She kept crawling in the small spot between the bed and the wall and she only came out once the fireworks subsided... After a few weeks, she really started showing more of her personality! She's wonderfully sweet and affectionate. She's definitely a snuggle bug. She has also started to show her playful side (although we have to keep that pretty calm until her knee is fully healed). Her favorite toy is her rope. She likes to play tug-of-war, but she's just as content just chewing on it for a while. She continues to try to play with Draco (our husky), but he didn't seem too into it yet. He's not used to having a playful friend, but I'm sure he'll get there. Back to her knee, she's doing wonderful with her rehab, and she hasn't once shown signs of discomfort or pain! She is quite strong, but she walks beautifully on the leash and "heals" very well. Essentially, she's a wonderful addition to our family, and we love her to pieces. We can't thank you enough for opportunity to raise this amazing, beautiful, sweet pup! PAW PRINTS | September 2015 8 MEET SOME MAXFUND DOGS By Ilene Johnson SANDY Sandy is a Saint Bernard mix who is 3 years old. Saint Bernards have a wonderful history, and are most famous for their rescue capabilities, for which they were originally bred. They were responsible for saving the lives of thousands of people trapped in avalanches in the Swiss Alps. Today, these gentle giants are still used in mountain rescues, and are also famous as family companion dogs. Sandy is a real joy to walk, and is always patient when we put on her collar and leash. She ambles along with you, and is very observant on her walks, enjoying people watching as she goes along. As a breed, Saint Bernards are content with walks and a romp in the grass. . Sandy loves people, and can be a snuggler. However, she is not sure about other dogs, so would do best as the only pet in your home. You can see Sandy in action in her video, the link to which is located under her biography on the MaxFund website. Sandy is a real favorite among the staff and volunteers. This gorgeous girl can make you and your family happy for years to come. Please come and meet her. __________________________________ THANK YOU! Thank you to the Donald F. & Shirley T. Hastings Family for their very generous donation to the One Man, One Motorcycle Fundraiser. Your generous support will help our animals greatly and is deeply appreciated! MEET KIWI Just look at this little lovebug! Kiwi is an eight year old Chihuahua mix. This little girl is sweet, and very quiet; she reportedly never makes a peep in her kennel. Kiwi is active, and enjoys going for walks. She has very excellent leash manners. She moves along at a very good speed, and you will just love seeing how fast her little legs can move along. Kiwi enjoys her play groups, and also enjoys just lying quietly next to you. Kiwi has gone on overnight visits with one of our volunteers. She enjoyed sleeping in our volunteer’s bed, and got along with her small dog and cat. In short, she was a wonderful houseguest! You can see Kiwi in action in the video that is found under her biography on MaxFund’s website. Just click on the link and you can see for yourself just how cute she is! This little treasure is just waiting to meet you. __________________________________ Mailbag continued from page 7 Dear MaxFund, Great to hear from you! Apache is fitting in perfectly in his forever home. He’s made many best dog friends in our complex and loves playdates. His favorite, though, is our trips to “his” creek or the lake Apache has definitely made our lives much better and brighter, starting and ending each day with his sleepy snuggle time. He is our big baby for sure! We couldn’t thank you enough for everything you and MaxFund has done for all of us. We sure can’t wait for a Denver trip to come see everyone! We’ve actually been considering a full time friend for Apache, so hopefully we’ll be coming to meet another member of our family. Regardless, we’ll be planning a visit soon. Hope all is well with you and the shelter. You all are amazing!
