PROTECTING YOUR DOG`S PAWS
Volume XX VIII Number III
PROTECTING YOUR DOG’S PAWS
W
inter can be brutal on your dog’s paws. The cold
weather, snow, and ice can lead to cracked or
peeling paw pads—and that can be painful for
your pooch. Fortunately, you can take a few simple steps to
prevent pad problems and keep your dog comfortable.
KEEP YOUR DOG’S NAILS TRIMMED
Long nails will make your dog’s toes spread when he walks,
allowing more room for snow and ice buildup between his
toes. This can make him feel like he’s walking with marbles
between his toes. Unclipped nails also affect your dog’s
weight distribution, pushing his weight onto the back of his
feet. This means he’ll have less traction and will be more
likely to slip on icy surfaces.
Check your de-icer
Salt and other ice-melting granules or chemicals can irritate your pet’s paws and cause stomach ailments if ingested.
Choose non-toxic options, such as sand, gravel, and
non-clumping cat litters. If you do use salt or chemical
deicers, look for “pet safe” brands.
WASH YOUR DOG’S PAWS AFTER WALKS
A warm water rinse will not only warm up cold paws, it
will wash off any salt or deicing chemicals and dissolve ice
that's formed between his toes.
From pedigree.com
TRIM THE FUR BETWEEN TOE PADS
By keeping the fur between the pads level with the pads
themselves you’ll reduce the amount of slushy snow, salt,
and grit clinging to your dog’s fur. Compacted snow salt on
the bottom of your dog’s feet will make walking difficult for
him and affect his ability to stay on his feet. Ice and salt
balls between his toes can also be a source of discomfort.
LUBRICATE PAWS BEFORE HEADING OUTDOORS
Cold weather, ice, and salt can cause your dog’s pads to dry
out and crack. You can prevent this by wiping his paws
with Vaseline or cooking spray before you take him out for
a walk. Be sure to keep him off slick surfaces inside the
house, such as tile, and outside the house, such as ice.
CONSIDER DOG BOOTIES
Dog boots provide the ultimate protection from the
elements and help your dog retain body heat. As you can
imagine, many dogs do not instantly take to wearing boots,
so try a gradual approach. Let him wear booties in the
house for short periods of time giving lots of praise (treats
will help, too). Note: Velcro straps stay on the paws better
than those that are tied.
PAW PRINTS | March 2016
Throughout the winter, try to care for your dog’s feet
like you do your own. When your feet get cold,
sore, and blistered, the discomfort can make you
miserable. Your dog feels the same way.

FROM THE WORLD OF GUS
By Gus Suro
As I am writing this it is snowing hard outside after
the warmest week this winter. This seems to be the
pattern this year. Despite what I see through the glass
door, I feel spring coming. There’s no real evidence of
that but, for me, a feeling is good enough. You say
that the snow has never entirely left the side of the
house since the first snowstorm. That’s true. But I
still have the feeling, and am going with it just after
we play in this new snow.
Winter fun notwithstanding, long cold spells leave
my bones aching. You remember that I got run over
by a car and badly broke one of my legs before I was
rescued by Mom and Dad? Well because my first
owner didn’t take care of it, and abandoned me
alongside of the road, it didn’t heal right and now
hurts when I get cold. Today they give me pills. Dad
has said that I will get laser treatment (whatever that
is) if the hurting still is there when it gets warm.
Meanwhile, I like the pills. Dad just pops them down
before I know it. Mom is better. She wraps them in
meat or cheese, and offers them for me to swallow. I’ve
never tried them but I think I would eat pickled beets if
you wrapped them in yummy two-legger food.
Without pain I can enjoy romping in the new snow
with Bandit. Of course he is a lot younger, and has
never been seriously injured. He likes to roll around in
the snow and wrestle with me. Sometimes he even rips
my collar off. Being almost twice his size, I can’t allow
him to grab my collar in his teeth and trying to drag
me with it. So I back up and try to drag him....off
comes the collar and Bandit runs away and buries my
collar in the snow. Mom gets mad at me for losing my
collar and tightens it another notch. But I didn’t exactly
“lose” my collar, did I?
Next month I will talk about spring. I meant to this
time but just got carried away saying one thing after
another. Oh well…

Dog Poem
I explained it to St. Peter,
I’d rather stay here
Outside the pearly gate.
I won’t be a nuisance,
I won’t even bark, I'll be very patient and wait,
I’ll be here, chewing on a celestial bone,
No matter how long you may be.
I’d miss you so much, if I went in alone.
It wouldn't be heaven for me.

A CAT’S UNIVERSE
by Snoopy & Gizmo
February, I am told, has something special. It is called Valentine’s Day. Two leggers get all excited about this
day. Mom says it is a great day if you have someone to share it with. You get taken out to dinner, maybe get
flowers and/or candy and a maybe, just maybe, a gift too! She says it is nice except it seems one sided to her.
The guys seem to get left out! The gift giving all seems geared to the girls. (If you don’t have someone special
yet, go buy yourself something – you know you will like it and it will fit!) Well, I have decided it is better to
be a cat. First, we don’t give anything to another cat except lots of licks and snuggles (we also share these
things with our 2 leggers). Secondly, it is a good thing cats don’t expect gifts from one another because none
of us have a “paying job?” which I am told is necessary to earn something called money, so no money no
gifts. However, if we were outside cats we could bring them a mouse or some other critter. In fact, one day a
long time ago, when Gizmo was allowed outside he did bring Mom 3 mice. That must have been an extra
special day!! Better even than Valentine’s Day.
March winds, April showers always brings May flowers. At least that is what Mom says. I was on sitting on
Loki’s crate looking out the window (could not sit in the cat tree because Gizmo was in the top circle and
would not get down) and noticed that there were squirrel nests in the tree next to the house. There are 5
nests but two of them are very small. The squirrels must have moved out. The other three are large and seem
well taken care of. I do worry about the squirrels though because snow is flying and the wind is blowing.
Sure am glad I live inside and not up a tree!
See you next month unless Gizmo demands equal time!

I smooth his long tail and tickle his tummy,
The telephone rings. The paper boy taps.
No move do I make. There's a cat in my lap.
Bright sunlight dances across the floor,
To warm my small friend just a bit more.
A happy prisoner am I in my chair –
Some moments of peace - not a care.
I think I'll take a little nap,
With this soft, furry ball, a cat in my lap.

MAXFUND’S
MAILBAG
Dear MaxFund,
Hello MaxFund Family!
We love Presley; he makes us smile
every day. The whole family loves to
see Presley. The best thing we did
was take Presley home. He hasn’t
had any seizures and we have been
able to cut down on the medicine to
two a day. He loves to play with his
toys and take rides. He gives us such
pleasure. Thank you for giving pets
another chance for a happy life.
This is Obi Wan Kenobi here (AKA
Obi for short), but you remember me
as Stanley! I am really enjoying my
new family and my new home!
Stanley now Obi
My new owners take me on walks
everyday and we always play with my
favorite toy “Jamiriquai” (yes like the
90’s singer) because it is a sock monkey with a giant hat on lol.
We also play fetch in our big back
yard and I love the dog that is my new
next door neighbor... we play a lot too.
Presley
My favorite things to do with my new
family are take walks, play and snuggle. We have snuggle time almost
every night after dinner in front of the
big bright screen. I am not a fan of
this screen because it is so bright! I
tend to hide under the blankie and
snuggle up next to my mama human.
However, my favorite part of the day
is when my human's take me out to
potty in the morning because then I

I will say the food is OKAY... they
took me off the can food and only
give my dry food now, but sometimes
they surprise me with a scrambled
egg... I like those a lot!
All and all I am pretty happy here
with all my toys and snuggles I get
everyday. Thanks for finding me
such a good home!

get to snuggle in bed with them. I
tend to snuggle up right in the
middle of my humans and sometimes
crawl under the covers if I am chilly.

Dear MaxFund,
Razz is doing fantastic loving life
here. He gets to help feed horses in
morning and night and spend most
of the day outside with me riding in
the truck or adventuring while I ride
horses. He has gotten a long great
with other dogs and the horses.
I love having him around.
Thank you so much!

SPRINGTIME SAFETY TIPS
Spring has sprung, and with the change of season, our thoughts turn to
Easter celebrations, spring cleaning and much-needed home improvement
projects. Before you embark on seasonal chores or outdoor revelry, take
inventory of potential springtime hazards for your furry friends.
*If you suspect your pet may have come in contact with or ingested a
potentially poisonous substance, contact your local veterinarian or the
ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately at (888) 426-4435.
EASTER TREATS AND DECORATIONS
Keep lilies and candy in check—chocolate goodies are toxic to cats and dogs,
and all true lilies can be fatal if ingested by cats. And be mindful, kitties love
to nibble on colorful plastic grass, which can lead to an obstructed digestive
tract, severe vomiting and dehydration. Moreover, while live bunnies, chicks
and other festive animals are adorable, resist the urge to buy them—these cute
babies grow up fast and often require specialized care!
SCREEN YOURSELF
Many pet parents welcome the breezy days of spring by opening their
windows. Unfortunately, they also unknowingly put their pets at risk—
especially cats, who are apt to jump or fall through unscreened windows.
Be sure to install snug and sturdy screens in all of your windows.
Razz
BUCKLE UP!
While most dogs love to feel the wind on their furry faces, allowing them
to ride in the beds of pick-up trucks or stick their heads out of moving-car
windows is dangerous. Flying debris and insects can cause inner ear or
eye injuries and lung infections, and abrupt stops or turns can cause
major injury, or worse! Pets riding in cars should always be secured in a
crate or wearing a seatbelt harness designed especially for them.
SPRING CLEANING
Spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition in many households, but be
sure to keep all cleaners and chemicals out of your pets’ way! Almost all
cleaning products, even all natural ones, contain chemicals that may be
harmful to pets. The key to using them safely is to read and follow label
directions for proper use and storage. Please visit our Poisonous
Household Products page for more information.
HOME IMPROVEMENT 101
Products such as paints, mineral spirits and solvents can be toxic to your
pets and cause severe irritation or chemical burns. Carefully read all labels
to see if the product is safe to use around your furry friends. Also, be cautious of physical hazards, including nails, staples, insulation, blades and
power tools. It may be wise to confine your dog or cat to a designated petfriendly room during home improvement projects.

MEET SOME MAXFUND DOGS
By Ilene Johnson
FOXIE and MOXIE
What could possibly be
better than one gorgeous
little Chihuahua? How
about two gorgeous little
Chihuahuas?
Please meet Foxie and Moxie, two gorgeous sisters
born in 2008. These two lovely girls are very fond of
each other, and because they are such good sisters, like
to make sure the other one is happy. Because they are
so bonded, they need to be adopted together. And
really, what could be better than an instant family?
Foxie and Moxie are confident that you will find the
two of them as easy to care for as one!
Both Foxie and Moxie are loving little girls. Foxie is a
little bit shyer than Moxie, but they both warm up so
quickly. Both sisters get along with other small dogs
and with cats too. Both girls are lovers who enjoy lots
of petting.
You can see these sisters in action in the videos found
under their bios on the MaxFund website, and you can
see for yourself how very lovely they really are.
Foxie and Moxie are available for either adoption or
foster care. For more information on foster care,
please call the shelter at (303) 595-4917. Foxie and
Moxie are so ready to become your instant family.
Please come meet them.
MAX
Are you looking for the best snuggler ever? Then please
come and meet Max, an incredibly handsome German
Shepherd/Husky mix who was born in 2008.
Max is a kind and gentle soul who truly loves everyone
that he meets. When Max was brought to MaxFund, he
could not even stand up on his own, let alone walk.
However, he has been receiving therapy for several
months, and is able to stand on his own. He is also able
to go for short walks, which is a beautiful sight. Max is
currently taking medication, and is receiving laser
treatments, all of which have aided in his recovery.
Max is looking for a loving forever home where he can be
showered with all the love and tender loving care that he
PAW PRINTS | March 2016
so richly deserves. Max has a happy, sweet and calm
demeanor that will be sure to win you over. He would
enjoy the company of an equally calm canine or feline
friend. Max is also housebroken.
Max is a real favorite of staff and volunteers, and we love
to visit with him and enjoy his company. He is always a
gentleman who very much enjoys snuggling, and he
never says no to a tummy rub.
This wonderful boy has an incredibly positive outlook on
life, and does not let anything hold him back. Max is also
available for foster care. Please come and meet him, and
see what a sweet gentleman he is, as well as what a great
snuggler he is!

LET YOUR GARDEN GROW—WITH CARE
Pet parents, take care—fertilizers, insecticides and
herbicides keep our plants and lawns healthy and
green, but their ingredients may be dangerous if your
pet ingests them. Always store these products in
out-of-the-way places and follow label instructions
carefully. Many popular springtime plants—including
rhododendron and azaleas—are also highly toxic to
pets and can prove fatal if eaten. Check out our full list
—of toxic and non-toxic plants for your home and garden.
AH-AH-ACHOO!
Like us, pets can be allergic to foods, dust, plants and
pollens. Allergic reactions in dogs and cats can cause
itching, minor sniffling and sneezing, or life-threatening anaphylactic shock to insect bites and stings. If you
suspect your pet has a springtime allergy, please visit
your veterinarian as soon as possible.
PESKY LITTLE CRITTERS
April showers bring May flowers—and an onslaught of
bugs! Make sure your pet is on year-round heartworm
preventive medication, as well as a flea and tick control
program. Ask your doctor to recommend a plan
designed specifically for your pet. Please visit our Fleas
and Ticks page for more information.
OUT AND ABOUT
Warmer weather means more trips to the park, longer
walks and more chances for your pet to wander off! Make
sure your dog or cat has a microchip for identification and
wears a tag imprinted with your home address, cell phone
and any other relevant contact information.

SILENT PAWS
SILENT MEMORIES
In memory of Bo - Joseph Davis
We adopted ‘Girl’ from MaxFund on Valentine’s Day in 2004.
We affectionately renamed her Hildegarde, or Hilde for
short. Hilde was our beloved pet for almost 12 years, and
we thank MaxFund for all that they do for cats in need,
and for giving us the opportunity to love our sweet
Hildegarde for so many years. She left our world on
January 5, 2016, but never our hearts - Kristina Siegenthaler
In honor of Mittens, who was living at MaxFund’s cat shelter
when she chose us in 2002. Thank you for letting us be
her parents all these years - Eric Beteille
In memory of Gwen Raferty’s beloved, Gus & Zoe
- Paul Leibowitz & Julie Christian
In memory of the Bill Family’s beloved, Luke - Linda Ehlers
In memory of Charlene Clark’s beloved cat, Harry
- Laura & John Slomczewski
In memory of Mary Kohl’s beloved, Howdy - Elizabeth Neva
In memory of Janelle & Missy Lampshire’s beloved, Tanzie
- Diane King
In happy memory of Gabby Henelund, a lovely little girl dog,
well-loved by her human family and sister to Frank and
big sister to Nellie. She loved her massages - Larry &
Mary Ann Meyers
Grief is so painfully real, no matter its origin. The love of, and
the attachment to, Mittens is equal to that of human
relationship. Likewise, the loss of Mittens is just as
devastating. Mittens was rescued over 13 years ago into a
home that was filled with love and care. How fortunate
Mittens was to receive this kind of devotion, care and love
from both Nicholle and Eric. Mittens will be remembered
fondly forever. She remains in our hearts always.
Love, “Nana” Beteille
