If you’re like me,
you ignore calls
from numbers
you don’t recognize with the assumption that the
only people you
really want to talk to are listed in your contact
list and perhaps even have a clever ring tone
assigned to them so that you don’t have to
squint at the screen to see who is calling.
This recently happened to me. I was on vacation, looking for Wile E. Coyote and the Road
Runner in the Valley of Fire when my phone
buzzed. I glanced at the screen, shrugged and
sent the call to voicemail and went back to
taking photos of one of the most gorgeous
landscapes in the country. Little did I know
that the call was from Visa’s Fraud Department,
and while I was baking in the 114° (dry) heat of
the desert, someone unbeknownst to me was
trying to purchase who knows what at a “super
store” in Georgia.
It wasn’t until I got home and tried to use my
debit card to pay for dinner and it was “nicely”
declined that I realized something was wrong.
Panic set in. I looked up the 121 website on
my phone and found the after-hours number
for Visa. It was then I realized that the number
that had tried to reach me was Visa’s Fraud
Prevention number! Oops. Lesson learned. That
number is now loaded into my contact list with
a siren for the ring tone -- no ignoring that!
It’s so easy for someone to steal your card
number and make a counterfeit card - a rogue
waiter or waitress with a small hand-held
scanner that records your card info, a passerby with a card reading device that scans your
card while it’s in your wallet are among some
of the technical ways you could become a
victim aside from carelessness of leaving a card
at a store, or from your wallet or purse being
stolen. The thief doesn’t have to keep your card
to steal your information.
You’ve heard that the best offense is often a
good defense -- Visa Fraud Protection is top
notch. Their intricate algorithms figured out I
couldn’t be in two places at once and put the
kibosh on the crook, declining to accept the
charge. Had I answered the phone the first
time, I would have received my replacement
card sooner, and I would have known to take
cash to pay for my dinner, thus avoiding the
embarrassing “your card was declined” spiel.

• PopMoney® is another alternative for
making payments to individuals. All you
need is to be signed up for Private PC (online
banking). It’s only $0.50 per transaction - a
small price to pay for peace of mind.
Because no system is hack-proof, vigilance is

Do I Save for My Retirement or
My Children’s Education?
Content developed by CUNA Brokerage Services, provided by Randy Nakamura
Many Americans
are facing a difficult
choice. Do they save for their own retirement
or save for their children’s education? Here are
some things to think about when wrestling
with this decision.
Are you paying for college or helping to pay?
Some parents decide that their kids should
contribute financially to their own education
because they will better appreciate the value
of their college education. Other parents ask
their kids to contribute to their education because they cannot afford to bear the expense
completely. In either case, this can make a big
difference in the amount you need to save for
your retirement.
When it’s one or the other
What happens when there just isn’t enough
disposable income each month to fund both
your children’s education and your own
retirement? Many financial experts agree that
retirement funding should be your first priority.
Here’s why.
Your kids can always borrow money to go
to school. You can’t borrow to retire. Your
kids have decades ahead of them after they
graduate to make money and pay the loans
back. You have decades ahead of you when
your savings need to support you.
Additionally, your kids can work through college and take longer than the traditional four
years. You may be forced to retire early due
to poor health or a bad economy.
A personal decision
If you cannot fully fund both your retirement
and savings goals, your first step should be to
work with a financial advisor who can help
you make the right choices for your personal
circumstances and maximize the potential of
what you can invest.
