Western Mustangs - Fall Sports Results
Baseball
The Mustangs put together a 14-7 regular
season record to finish in a tie for second
place in the eight team OUA league. At
the OUA championship tournament in St.
Catharines the Mustangs lost a hard-fought
contest 4-3 to the Brock Badgers following
a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Guelph
Gryphons. With the losses the Mustangs
were eliminated from the championships.
Mustang starter Adam Paish won the
OUA’s Top Pitcher Award and was named
the starting pitcher on the OUA All-Star
Team for a 2012 campaign that saw him
go 5-1 in the regular season, posting a 1.39
ERA with 22 strike outs. Following Paish
in the major awards is London native Nolan
Anderson who was named the OUA Rookie
of the Year. In addition to his Rookie of the
Year award Anderson was also named to the
OUA All-Star Team as the designated hitter.
Joining Paish and Anderson on the All-Star
Team are Shawn Robinson at shortstop and
Paul Lytwynec at third base.
Cross Country
Men
The OUA championships were held on a
new race course laid out on the grounds
of Kingsbridge Conference Centre in King
City. The course was challenging enough
with some demanding stretches both up
and down hills around a 2.5km loop. But 24
hours of steady rain just before the race took
away any speed that might be mustered.
By the time the men’s race was run the
course was a mess, having been thoroughly
chewed up by the women’s race held earlier
in the day. Ryan Armstrong in eighteenth
place was the Mustangs’ top finisher on
the day. Teammate, third-year Kevin
Blackney crossed the line in twenty-second
place followed by rookie Shane Roberts in
twenty-fifth. Roberts’ finish was the best
of any Western male rookie in five years.
Western’s 6th place finish was an indication
of the strength of the OUA Conference.
Western later hosted the CIS championships
at the Thames Valley Golf Course in
London where the Mustangs ran an inspired
race to finish in ninth place. The home team
had local support and course experience on
its side to help all five runners finish in the
top 80. The team’s score of 266 knocked
St. Francis Xavier and the University of
Toronto out of the top ten. The Guelph
Gryphons convincingly defended their title
with 38 points, followed by Laval Rouge et
Or with 101 points and the Windsor Lancers
with a 104 overall team score. Regina
Cougar, fifth-year Kelly Wiebe, broke
the Thames Valley Golf Course record by
over thirty seconds with a time of 30:21.4
in the 10-kilometre race and led from the
start, breaking apart from the pack by the
2.5km mark. Wiebe outpaced the second
place finisher by more than forty seconds.
Mustang Ryan Armstrong was Western’s
top runner in seventeenth position. The fifthyear athlete’s CIS national experience with
the Mustangs’ track and field team brought
skill to the course to finish in 32:25.7.
Women
OUA
The Western women’s team ran strongly
in King City to earn a bronze medal in the
team competition. Western’s top finisher,
Amanda Truelove, went out like a shot as
she had considerable confidence in her
racing and training in the weeks leading
to the championships. Her twelfth place
finish earned her Second Team OUA
All-Star honors. Teammate, fifth-year
veteran Emma Tallman was close behind
in fifteenth, while Alicia Knox and Julie
Hambleton finished in twenty-third and
twenty-fourth positions. All of Western’s
runners finished in the top 50 out of a 103
person heat, which contributed to their
bronze medal standing.
At the CIS championships, with previous
experience on the course, as well as
hometown support on the sidelines, the
women rallied for a bronze medal with
an overall team score of 107 points. The
Mustangs finished the season ranked
third nationally, behind the powerhouse
Guelph Gryphons who took the title
with 21 points, followed by McMaster
with 62 points. Head coach Bob Vigars
noted: “Our women’s team has the most
national championships of any sport at
Western, but it’s been so long since we’ve
seen the recognition. To get that bronze
today was just great for them.” The last

platform for women’s cross-country was
in 2000. The Gryphons captured its eighth
consecutive CIS championship title –
one of the longest in CIS history – with
all five runners in the top ten. Amanda
Truelove led the Mustangs’ squad,
finishing in eleventh place overall with a
17:53 time. The first-year grad student,
who finished an undergraduate degree at
Duke University, earned Second-Team AllCanadian status. Fifth-year Emma Tallman
was second for Western in 14th spot and
also received Second-Team All-Canadian
honour. Teammates Becky Pieterson,
Melissa Caruso, and Julie Hambleton all
contributed with top-30 times to secure the
bronze position.
Field Hockey
OUA
The
Western
Mustangs
women’s
field hockey team reached the OUA
championship tournament where they
fell to the Guelph Gryphons in the semifinal game. This set up a confrontation
with the Waterloo Warriors in the OUA
bronze medal match. With a 2-0 win the
Mustangs advanced as the fifth seed to the
national championships for the first time
in the history of the Western field hockey
program. At the CIS championships held
in Toronto, the Mustangs compiled a 2-2
round robin record including a tough
3-1 loss to the number one seed UBC
Thunderbirds and an upset of Guelph by the
same score. This set up yet another game
against the Gryphons for the CIS bronze
medal. Guelph extracted revenge for the
round robin loss by defeating the Mustang
women, again by a 3-1 score. Despite the
loss, Mustangs coach – and CIS coach of
the year – Jeff Pacheco noted how proud
he was of his team and their season and the
results they achieved.

Football
The Mustangs compiled a 5-3 regular
season record which meant that they would
have to face the Windsor Lancers in an
OUA quarterfinal game. Rain and high
winds were supposed to cause problems
for receivers on the Saturday afternoon the
two teams met at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
However, apparently no one told Matt
Uren. The second-year receiver racked up
just over 400 total yards and hauled in four
touchdown passes, leading the Mustangs to
a 56-35 victory over the Lancers, putting
Western into the OUA Semi-Finals. The
four touchdown receptions set an OUA
playoff record, and fell one short of the CIS
playoff record of five.
The win set up a confrontation with the top
ranked team in the country, the McMaster
Marauders. The Mustangs controlled the
early stages of the game, however, the
Marauders capitalized on turnovers in the
second half to pull away from Western and
score a 42-28 victory. With the loss, for the
first time in six years the Western Mustangs
missed a chance to play in the Yates Cup
Final. “[They’re a] good football team,”
said Western head coach Greg Marshall.
“We made a few mistakes in the second
half and you can’t do that against a good
football team; they’ll make you pay for it.
We have a lot of young kids playing their
hearts out. It’s really disappointing, but like
I said credit to McMaster they did a good
job out there.”
“W” Club
The OUA recognized a number of Mustangs
as All-Stars. Thirteen players were selected:
five named First Team All-Stars and eight
to the Second Team. On offensive, 1,000yard rusher Garret Sanvido and right tackle
Josh Burley were named to the First Team
while inside receiver Brian Marshall, centre
Greg Wilson and guards Mike Van Praet and
Eric Armitage earned Second Team honors.
Punter Lirim Hajrullahu nabbed First Team
punter in his first season handling the punting
duties. On defence sophomore tackle and
Hamilton native Daryl Waud and defensive
back Harold Mutobola were named to the
First Team. Dylan Ainsworth who had 9.5
sacks, linebacker Pawel Kruba, cornerback
Jamie Symianick and safety Mike Spence
were also all named to the Second Team.
Shortly thereafter, Daryl Waud and Garret
Sanvido, were named CIS First Team AllCanadians for their play in the 2012 season.
Waud, a defensive tackle from Hamilton, was
a key piece of a Mustangs front seven that
terrorized opposing quarterbacks, racking up
34 sacks as a unit, second most in the country.
Waud was second on the Mustangs in tackles
this season, recording 30 stops, 24 of them
individually, while also adding two sacks
and an interception. Sanvido, a second year
running back out of Vancouver, emerged as
one of the best backs in the nation, rushing
for over 100 yards in all but one of his seven
regular season games. Despite missing one
regular season contest, Sanvido ran for
1,001 yards, the only rusher to eclipse the
1,000 yard mark this season. He also led the
country in rushing touchdowns with 13.
Golf
Men
The Mustangs golf team gained the lead after
the first day of the OUA championships and
would not relinquish it as the team edged
out the host Waterloo Warriors to capture
the championship. The championship
came down to a tiebreaker as both squads

finished with a two day total of 588
strokes, but the Mustangs were awarded the
Championship as fifth golfer Spencer Berk
was three strokes better than his counterpart
Dylan Cave in the playoffs. With the win
the Mustangs men’s team regained the title
they last won in 2010. Both teams battled
through excruciating weather conditions for
the opening round, which set the stage for an
exciting finish with the sun shining on the
final afternoon. Fifth-year veteran Charles
Fitzsimmons led the way for the Mustangs,
shooting 144, recording two straight rounds
at one over par. Fitzsimmons’ consistent
play allowed him to claim fourth place on
the leaderboard. Only a few strokes behind
were Cole Fulton at plus-5 and Traynor
Turkiewicz at plus-6. Rounding out the
Western contingent was Harris Bundy at
plus-9. Mustangs men’s head coach Jim
Waite was named the OUA Men’s Golf
Coach of the Year while Fitzsimmons was
named to the men’s OUA First All-Star
Team for the second year in a row.
Women
The women’s team also secured a podium
placement at the OUA championships,
capturing the bronze medal behind
Waterloo and Toronto. While the women
dropped one spot from their second place
finish last season, they finished with a lower
score at for the entire tournament between
the four players. Jessie Mercer was the
highest ranking Mustang on the women’s
leaderboard shooting a plus-21 over the
two days to tie for eighth. Two strokes back
was Amy Williams in 12th, while Lauren
Wardrope and Lauren Iantomasi ranked
15th and 18th respectively. Mercer was
named to the women’s OUA Second AllStar Team following the event, a feat she
also accomplished last season.

Rowing
For the third time in four years Western’s
women’s lacrosse team captured OUA
gold with a 12-7 win over the Guelph
Gryphons. The win closes out a second
perfect season and a repeat win over
a tenacious Guelph squad. The game
started slowly with Western carrying
much of the offence but failing to find
the back of the net. Guelph opened
the scoring and although Western
responded to tie the game Guelph got
3 quick goals to take a 4-1 lead. The two
teams then traded goals with Western
notching one more before the half
and Guelph taking a 5-3 lead midway
through the game. The coaching staff
helped the Mustangs regroup and the
team responded with an offensive
outburst, scoring seven unanswered goals
in the first 12 minutes of the second half.
In addition to the championship, the
OUA also honoured Midfielder Tenyka
Snider and Attackers Emmi Morris and
Tawine Johnson with All-Star selections.
Tenyka Snider also received top honours as
OUA Offensive Player of the Year.
The Western Mustangs men’s and women’s
rowing teams travelled to St. Catharines for
the OUA Rowing Championships hosted
by Brock University. Both teams rowed to
second place overall with several strong
showings. Brock captured the men’s title
with 113 points, while Queen’s took the
women’s crown with 95 points.
Mustang Adam Rabalski won the
men’s heavyweight single event, while
Western men’s heavyweight also won the
heavyweight twos. The heavyweight fours
finished second behind Brock, while the
lightweight eights secured third place in a
close contest. The men’s lightweight twos
looked strong and took third overall. Finally
the Western men also looked to secure gold
in the lightweight fours and heavyweight
eights, but fell short to Brock and Queen’s
respectively.
Men
The McGill Redmen took on the
Western Mustangs in a battle of two
huge franchises in the Canadian University
Field Lacrosse Association lacrosse. After
a tightly contested first half the Mustangs
led 3-1. McGill outscored the Mustangs
in the second half of the game but
at the end of regulation the teams
were tied at 6-6. While both teams were
hesitant in the first period of over time
ultimately it was the Redmen who came
out on top courtesy of Jishan Sharples who
scored the winner.
The Mustangs were favoured to defend
their 2011 championship in the women’s
event and looked poised after warm up and
qualifying races. After some exciting heats
through the rain and wind, the final results

came down to the final two races of the day
where, in the end, Queen’s took the OUA
title by a ten point margin. The Mustangs
took first place in the lightweight eight,
heavyweight fours and lightweight two
events. The women’s heavyweight eights
raced decisively to the finish but were
edged by Queen’s in the final second.
26 top Mustangs rowers travelled to
Burnaby, BC to compete in the Canadian
University Rowing Championships. Both
the men’s and women’s teams placed third
overall with just a few points separating the
top 3 schools in each category. Time trials
took place on the first day, where crews
raced down the course against the clock
in hopes their time would be fast enough
to qualify for the A finals. In true Mustang
fashion, every Western crew advanced
to the A finals, meaning all teams placed
top six in their event. In the heavyweight
women’s single, Genevieve Favreau set
the tone for a successful day, finishing
second to world U23 gold medallist Carling
Zeeman of Laurentian. In the lightweight
women’s single, Sara Matovic finished
fifth in a close race, and Kieran Tierney,
rookie on the lightweight men’ team, placed
sixth in the single. Adam Rabalski won
the extremely competitive heavyweight
men’s single by 3 seconds. In lightweight
doubles, the men’s crew finished fourth
in their first sculling event of the season
while the lightweight women’s crew took
bronze. The heavyweight men’s pair had
to deal with broken boat steering from the
start of their race, ultimately finishing in
third place. The heavyweight women’s pair
also raced strongly in a tight field, to finish
second.
Fresh off their win at the Head of the Charles
Regatta earlier in the season, the lightweight
women’s four won a second gold medal for
Western. In contrast, after a brutal season of
injuries, the lightweight men’s crew pulled
together for a fourth place finish. Finally,
in the highly anticipated 8s races, Western’s
defending champions in the heavyweight
women eight finished a disappointing fourth
place among fierce competition from the
University of Victoria, UBC and Queen’s.
Closing the day with an incredible result,
the Western men won the hotly contested
heavyweight men’s eights.

“W” Club
Rugby
quarterfinal matchup. Home turf proved to
be an advantage for the Warriors as they
came away with a 24-7 victory. Western
finishes their season with the best record
since 2009 and placed two players in the
top 20 in OUA scoring. London native
Meaghann Buitinga’s 18 converts were
good for 10th place, while co-captain Lori
Josephson finished 11th with 35 points on
seven tries.
Men
Soccer
The Mustangs put together a great regular
season losing only once to finish with a 7-1
record. They began their playoff run by
facing the Waterloo Warriors with an OUA
Quarterfinal matchup against the Waterloo
Warriors. Getting out to an early lead the
Mustangs were able to hold off a resilient
Warriors team in the second half to come
away with a 17-12 victory. With the win
Western moved on to face Guelph in the
OUA Semi-Final. After a defensive struggle
in the first half that saw Guelph ahead 3-0
at the break, Western came back to outscore
the Gryphons by a score of 21-15. The win
against Guelph meant the Mustangs would
face Queen’s at Nixon Field in Kingston for
the OUA championship. Despite a late push
from the Western offence the Gaels came
away with a 29-18 victory, denying the
Mustangs their second straight OUA title.
The loss was only the second of the season
for Western and the team finishes with a
9-2 record. Along with a stellar record six
Mustangs were named OUA All-Stars as
MikeTurnbull, John Humphries, Geoff
Wharburton, James Ojo, and Courtney
Mendez were all recognized for an excellent
2012 campaign.
Men
The Mustangs put together a 7-4-5 record
in the competitive OUA West division
regular season play, good for third place
and a berth in the playoffs where they
faced rivals the Laurier Golden Hawks in
the quarterfinal match-up. While the odds
were in Western’s favour after a Golden
Hawks midfielder received a red card, the
desired outcome was not to be as Laurier
scored on a penalty kick in the final minute
of the game to take the game 3-2 and propel
the Golden Hawks to the OUA West semifinal. Mustang Dominic Bell was selected
an OUA first team All Star for the second
consecutive season while team captain
Andrew Walton and fourth-year teammate
Eric Amato made the OUA second team allstars.
Women
After a strong regular season that gave
them second place in the OUA west
division standings, the Mustangs reached
the division semi-finals where came up
against McMaster. Following a tightly
contested game, it took the fifth penalty
kicker in a post-overtime shootout for the
McMaster Marauders to take a 1-0 win
over Western at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
Despite maintaining ball control for the
majority of the game, the Mustangs’ could
not score during regulation and over-time.
Marauder goalie Brittany Duffey played an
outstanding game and accurately read the
final kicks for McMaster’s 3-2 edge in the
shootout.
Women
After finishing the regular season in third
place in the OUA’s Shields Division,
the Mustangs team headed to nearby
Waterloo to take on the Warriors in an OUA
The OUA West second team all-star list
featured key Mustang players. Sabrina
DeNard and Anna Keller were honored
on the women’s team. Western midfielder

Jennifer Spinnozzi achieved the Community
Service Award for the OUA West division.
Spinozzi is a fourth-year medical student
and has been assistant captain for three
years, and still finds time to keep up with
her demanding studies and volunteer in
London and Sarnia communities.

Tennis
by half a point. In addition to the team
title and the two doubles victories,
two Western players won their individual
flights.
Waterpolo
Softball
The Mustangs came from behind to defeat
the Ottawa Gee Gees 9-4 in extra innings
at the OUA Championships. Trailing 1-3
in the top of the sixth, Western scored
twice to tie the game. There was no
further scoring in innings 6 and 7 so the
game entered extra innings. In the top of
the ninth Western exploded for 6 runs to
take the lead for good. Stacie Cox pitched
all 9 innings for the victory. Mustang left
fielder, Tricia MacKay was named the
tournament MVP while Mustangs, AJ
Anstett (CF) and Stacie Cox were selected
as All-Stars. Earlier in the day, Western
defeated Guelph 7-1 in their semi-final.
Melinda Stevenson (Brampton) got the
complete game victory. Waterloo defeated
Guelph in the third place game. It is the
third consecutive Ontario Championship
for the Mustangs who are also 2 time
National Champs.

The Western Mustangs walked away
with two titles, winning both the men’s
and women’s OUA Tennis Championships
at the University of Ontario Institute
of Technology. It’s the first time Western
has claimed both titles in a single
season since 1992-93. The Mustangs
men’s team went undefeated, winning all
six of their matches to claim the team
title, their first since 2006-07. Along
the way to winning the team championship
four Mustangs won their individual
flights, while two doubles pairs also
won their flights. On the women’s side
of the draw things came down to the
final two doubles matches against the
Toronto Varsity Blues. The Mustangs
won both matches, claiming the team
championship, their first since 1992-93,

CIS Wrestling March 2013 - Wrestling Alums in the area who

with the championships including a wrestling alumni

100th Anniversary of Intercollegiate Athletics at Western.
After some research, it has been concluded that Western first
formed teams to compete against opponents from outside the
university in the 1913-14 season. Plans are already underway
to celebrate a century of intercollegiate athletics at Western!
After two strong days of competition, the
Mustangs made it into the medal round of
the OUA Championship in Ottawa. Western
improved upon their seventh place finish
in last year’s tournament, defeating the
Ottawa Gee-Gees for the bronze medal.
The Mustangs had started their day with a
showdown against the host and defending
champion Carleton Ravens. Despite Daniel
Abraham having a multi-goal game,
scoring four, the Ravens defeated Western
16-8 to earn a spot in the finals. Back in
the pool later in the day the Mustangs took
on the Gee-Gees in a hard-fought contest.
Abraham again led the way for Western,
putting in his second four-goal performance
of the day to cement his spot on the OUA
All-Star team. The Gee-Gees had two four
goal scorers of their own, but they were
unable to overcome the Mustangs, with
Western earning a 15-12 win to claim the
bronze medal. The Toronto Varsity Blues
would go on to capture their 29th provincial
title, defeating Carleton 11-7 in the final.

The W Club Hall of Fame Inductees for 2012 were formally honored
at the 38th Annual Alumni Awards of Merit dinner held at the Great
Hall during Homecoming Celebrations. The worthy inductees and
some of their accomplishments are listed here. The Hall of Fame
Selection Committee is always on the look-out for nominations, so

Horsing Around
Several Mustangs rowers competed at the National
Rowing Championships in Victoria, BC, where top
rowers from all around the country went to finish the
2012 rowing season. Top results include gold in the
men’s pair for Mark Dawidek and Dave Lariviere
and in the women’s pair for former Mustang and
last year’s female athlete of the year, Sarah Black,
who is now training with the national team. Current
Mustang Jen Martins won a silver medal in the
women’s pair. The Mustangs also brought home three
bronze medals: one by Adam Rabalski in the men’s
single; one by Erin Snelgrove in the lightweight
women’s single; and one by Cathleen Trafton in
the junior women’s single. In the lightweight men’s
pair, Western achieved fourth (Ian Connell &
Dakin Wilson) and fifth (Graham Schenck & Marc
Addison) place results respectively. Lance Brazeau
and Nick Schudlo finished fifth in the men’s pair.
Don McLeish continues to row at age seventy-two,
teaming up with Peterborough’s Mike Moloney
to win the men’s T-7 2x doubles category at the
Canadian Sculling Marathon 10.5 KM distance on
the Ottawa River. McLeish and Moloney posted a
time of 55 minutes 14 seconds to beat their perennial
competition by 4 min 28 seconds from Niagara Rowing
School. Rowers from Ottawa New Edinburgh Club,
Burnstown RC, Island Rowers, Beachburg RC, and
Ottawa RC rowed in excellent conditions in 1x,.2x.
and 4x categories. McLeish tore his hamstring the
day before the race in 2011, and spent six months in
physio/rehab and PRP injections, but finally training
at the London High Performance Centre was able to
compete this year. The Port Credit resident and former
UWO rower is a nine- time World Masters Regatta
Champion and has been rowing fifty-seven years.
