I have almost completed my first year as District Superintendent of the Northeast District. I am grateful for the support and prayers of each of you. My first deed of ministry as a District Superintendent was to welcome the moving pastors on moving day 2008. We have celebrated charge conferences together, completed evaluations, completed consultations with pastors and pastor parish relations committees, projected appointments, and shared projected appointments with pastors and committees. The pastors and their families have also allowed me to be their pastor and I thank you for trusting me. So it seems that we have almost come full circle. I am writing this on Tuesday, June 2, 2009. I am preparing to leave for Lake Junaluska to prepare for Annual Conference. Some of the pastors and their families are doing the hard work of preparing to move. To you, I want to thank you for your ministries which you have practiced in this district. You have wonderful memories of parishioners opening their lives and allowing you to be a part of them. You have celebrated the good and the bad with them. You have baptized their children, confirmed their youth, counseled and married their children, and buried their dead. I have discovered that through these deeds of ministries God has a way of blessing us as we attempt to bless others. I am sure that congregations will be having receptions and other activities to celebrate ministries. As these celebrations happen, please know that Lisa and I are grateful for the work that you have done in this District. We thank you for your ministries of order and how you practice this ministry among us. Finally, the packing is difficult and the cleaning seems like there is not enough time to complete it, but by the grace of God, the determination of families, and the generosity of congregations, the work is completed. This means that on moving day as the parsonage family changes, grief is experienced, tears shed, and friends say good bye. These things happen in the morning, but if the process is working correctly before night falls, all are saying hello to another group of people and ministries begin at newer places and newer pastor-parishioners relationships begin. As those who are members of this ministry know that God is working through this process. God uses this process to bless us and to help us bless others. I thank God that God gives us God’s grace and power so that we can be instruments whom God uses for the glory of God. Christmas in July at UMAR UMAR is planning a "Christmas in July" fundraiser to help support our Resident in Need Fund! We need your help! As most of you know, this employee supported fund pays for things that program participants cannot always afford like: clothing, medications, therapies, hearing aids, dentures, eye glasses, tuition, camp scholarships and other necessary items to enhance their quality of life! Most recipients of this fund have limited or no support except their UMAR family. The idea is to auction off some really cool holiday presents to employees, sell our left over Christmas cards, and help out a worthy cause at the same time. This is where you come in...we need your help to get auction items. Below is a list of suggested items UMAR employees say they would give as presents and are willing to bid on. Please, can you help by securing items (or donations) for this fundraiser? • • • • • • • • • Electronics: I-Pods, computers, video gaming systems, cell phones, digital cameras Gift cards: retail stores, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, home improvement Use of a vacation home: beach house, lake house, mountain cottage, city apartment Services: car wash, manicure, dry cleaning, picture framing, dog grooming, florist Airline miles for holiday travel Tickets: to the theater, sporting events, NASCAR races, movies, golf games, etc. Custom gift basket items: gourmet foods, candles, bath products, wine, picture frames Gifts for kids: toys, books, board games, gadgets Miscellaneous: perfume, jewelry, art, cash - anything you would want to receive or give as a gift! If you can get the items donated (or make a donation to purchase an item), we will take care of the pick-up, auction, wrapping, shipping, tax letters, collection and anything else to make this a great fundraiser for our Residents in Need! Please let me know if you have any questions, other ideas, or just want to help - the gift items need to be new, and in the main office no later than JUNE 30th! The auction will take place in July before the 25th! Happy Holidays! And thank you in advance for making this a fun and successful event for our employees! Please enter email addresses for your Church leaders. We are trying to collect emails for all contact people. Please remember to make changes in the LCLCL database as they arise! [More] Hymnal revision stopped due to lack of funds Work has been halted on a proposed new United Methodist Hymnal, making it the latest victim of the economic crisis. “The resources required to sustain a dedicated staff and pay for the planned activities are simply not available at this time,” said Bishop Ernest S. Lyght, chair of the hymnal revision committee. The United Methodist Publishing House would have to invest at least $2 million to develop a new hymnal and funding is not available from ongoing operations or from reserves, said Neil Alexander, president and publisher. The 2008 United Methodist General Conference approved “with joyful excitement” creation of a committee to bring a proposed hymnal to the 2012 session of the denomination’s top legislative body. [More] Changes made to 2009 AC per diem reimbursement Cash reimbursements will NOT be made at Lake Junaluska during annual conference due to safety considerations. Per diem reimbursement checks will be mailed to those who wish to receive them AFTER annual conference. An April letter has been mailed to delegates outlining the method of per diem reimbursement this year, along with a postage-paid reply card. The envelope was marked "Urgent: Delegate Per Diem and Child Care Information". Please complete and return the reply card right away. http://www.wnccumc.org/ac9/pdf/PerDiemLetterWeb.pdf Reservations required for child care during annual conference Child care registration for annual conference at Lake Junaluska must be made and paid in advance. http://www.wnccumc.org/ac9/pdf/ChildCareRegistration2009.pdf CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF MINISTRY TO KIDS! 16 Annual Benefit Golf Tournament th Sponsored by the Koinonia Sunday School Class of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church for The Children’s Home 2-Man Teams Captain’s Choice Fellowship Prizes Fun & Lake Junaluska Golf Course Tuesday, June 9, 2009 | 2 p.m. Shotgun Start Rain or Shine | Supper Provided Field limited to first 80 paid participants.
