Traditional, and fashionably so
Hollywood Bollywood Nature “I still have a long way to go. I still have a few pounds over to lose, I look decent.” Rhythm Playhouse 05 Pg QATAR TRIBUNE Publication Saturday May 11, 2013 Traditional, and fashionably so RY O T S R 02 VE PG CO Saturday, May 11, 2013 Designers bling up Gulf women’s garment Designers, however, have increasingly recognised the demand for abayas with a bit of extra flair. It can be as subtle as embroidery on the sleeves and hems or as eye-catching as gems stitched into the fabric Saudi fashion designer Hania al Braikan presents an abaya selling for about $1500 at a bridal exhibition in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. KAMRAN JEBREILI AP J UST a few years ago, Gulf Arab wom-- en usually only felt comfortable show-ing off their fashion sense at ladies-only parties or family gatherings. In public, at least in their home countries, the standard all-black abaya — a simple floor-length covering and accompanying head scarf — was the only culturally accepted option. But now, a new generation of abaya design-ers is giving the traditional garment a twist with choices of fabric, designs and even some expen-sive bling to allow Gulf women a host of style options. The basic look of the abaya remains un-changed: black with long sleeves and a flowing form that somewhat conceals the shape of the body. Gulf culture and government directives encourage “national dress” for both sexes: Men wear full-length robes that are mostly white, but include other colours such as beige and blue. Designers, however, have increasingly recog-nised the demand for abayas with a bit of extra flair. It can be as subtle as embroidery on the sleeves and hems or as eye-catching as gems stitched into the fabric. Top European fashion houses such as Dior, Nina Ricci and Alberta Ferretti have already put their stamps on abayas in the wealthy Gulf market for local woman, known as khalijiyat, after the Arabic name for the Gulf. The most expensive abaya so far has been valued at $17.7 million, created by British designer Debbie Wingham and displayed in Dubai in March. It features different col-oured diamonds including the world’s most expensive and rare, the red diamond. There are more than 200,000 stitches in 14-karat white gold thread. Among the Gulf countries, the United Arab Emirates — and particularly Dubai — is the centre of the specialty abaya industry with exports going across the Middle East and North Africa and to some African Muslim countries. But since the Arab Spring upris-ings, the UAE has sharply reduced visas from countries including Egypt, Tuni-sia, Syria and Libya. This has led to a steep drop in sales. Kaleem Khan, a Bangladeshi abaya designer at the Abu Hail Centre in Dubai, estimated that sales were down to 70 percent because regular buyers cannot get visas to the UAE. Saturday, May 11, 2013 Hawn and Hudson talk mother-daughter beauty AP W HEN Kate Hudson first burst onto the scene with the movie Almost Famous, her uncanny resemblance to her mother Goldie Hawn had everybody talking. Hudson didn’t see it. But now that she’s a mother herself - of two sons, Rider and Bingham - the 34year-old actress says she treasures the comparison. The mother-daughter pair - Hawn an Oscar winner for Cactus Flower and Hudson a nominee for Almost Famous - has never acted together, but they teamed up for an Almay ad for Mother’s Day. In a dis-cussion of motherhood and beauty, both said their glow comes from the inside. Hawn also said daily medita-tion allows her to “connect to spirit.” “Growing up with my mom there was always a sense of fun and it comes down to optimism as well,” Hudson said in an interview. “When you learn how to be optimistic and wake up in the morning and appre-ciate things and create that in your brain, I think you start to have an enjoyment of life and it shows.” Q: Now that Kate is an adult and a mom herself, has your relationship gone from parent and child to friends? Hawn: The truth is that no matter how old we are, as long as our mothers are alive, we want our mother. And it’s a very powerful relationship if it’s healthy. I miss my mother today. I think the transition does happen but I don’t think we ever lose our positioning because we don’t want to lose our mother. It’s a very, very interesting walk. Hudson: I think when I had Rider I think that’s when you really start to see your parents and con-nect with them in a different way and you start to see yourself differ-ently as to what you put your par-ents through, you sort of empathise. Everyone talks about how you two look alike. Do you see the resemblance? Hawn: I do. Hudson: I used to say, ‘Why do people say that? I look nothing like my mom’ but I sometimes walk across a mirror and just get a glance “Growing up with my mom there was always a sense of fun and it comes down to optimism as well” and I see it. Hawn: We don’t really look alike. You take all of our features and they’re not alike. What we do have is a way of being that is both very similar. Katie’s eyes are differ-ent. She looks more like my mother. It’s interesting how you can feel it’s in the DNA. Katie said it perfectly, she said, ‘Why does everybody al-ways talk about this and that and us’ and she said, ‘What do you expect? I’m my mother’s daughter!’ Hudson: And you know what, I am damn proud of it! It’s a very repetitive question that I get a lot in my life and it’s something that I feel the rarity of being in that position is I really look at that as a real blessing because the relationship between mother and daughter is very com-plex and to be able to talk about the importance of the relationship is something that I look forward to. It really informed such a huge part of who I am and the confidence that I have as a woman. It really does come from the closeness that I have with mommy. Now as I get questions about mom it’s so much deeper and so much more complex that I look forward to sharing that more and more with people. What’s the best beauty advice you ever received from your mother? Hudson: Beauty is an insideout job and I think when you are connected to the things that you love, whether it be your children or your creativity, that they bring out a level of joy and circulate all the endorphins in your brain and then you have that, that’s when beauty starts to reveal itself. HOLLYWOOD Shakira on her post-baby body: ‘I look decent’ AP OLOMBIAN superstar Shakira is learning how to balance her de-manding work schedule with being a new mom one day at a time. “It’s part of motherhood you know,” she said of juggling personal and profes-sional life. “You got to figure it out as you go.” The 36-year-old singer and her soccer star boyfriend Gerard Pique welcomed their first child, Milan Pique Mebarak, on January 22. “He’s great. He’s so mellow, but he’s very alert too,” she said in an interview on Wednesday night at House of Blues in West Hollywood, California. “It’s like he knows what’s going on around him. He knows when someone comes in the room or comes out. He’s something.” Shakira joined fellow The Voice coaches, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Usher, at a red carpet event celebrat-ing the NBC signing competition’s top 12 finalists. The Voice host Carson Daly says baby Milan has been a welcome addition to C the kid friendly set, which features regular visits from Daly’s young brood, Ush-er’s children and Levine’s nephews. “With Milan it’s a full blown nursery!” explained Daly of Shakira’s baby proofed double-wide trailer. “It’s just like Shakira’s door opens and ‘It’s a Small World’ starts playing. It’s built for Milan. And it’s really special and it’s cool. We’re like a little family.” But according to Shakira, it’s not the children who cause the most trouble. “It’s like a kindergarten be-cause these guys are already babies. They’re babies!” she joked of her fel-low coaches. When it comes to getting those famous hips back into pre-baby shape, Shakira says she’s still working on it. “I still have a long way to go. I still have a few pounds over to lose,” she said. “I look decent.” SCENE UNSEEN Hollywood preparing film about Lionel Messi Shakira Madonna to be honoured for top grossing tour at Billboard Awards REUTERS ADONNA will be honoured at the Bill-board Music Awards show this month for her 2012 MDNA tour, the high grossing concert tour of the year, organisers of the awards show said on Wednesday. The singer will accept the Top Touring Artist award at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 19th for the tour that grossed more than $305 million from 88 soldout shows and attracted an audience of 2.2 million people. “A cultural icon, Madonna is one of the most successful and influential entertainers of all time and was recently named Billboard’s Top Money Maker of 2012,” Billboard said in a statement. The chart-topping singer holds numerous other Billboard awards, including the record for the most top 10 singles (38). In addition to her music, Madonna is also an avid art collector. On Tuesday she sold a 1921 painting by the French artist Fernand Leger, Trois Femmes a la Table Rouge, for $7.16 million to raise money for the non-profit Ray of Light Foundation, to fund girls’ educa-tion in poor countries. The mother of four, including two adopted children from Malawi, is planning to build 10 schools in the African nation. M Madonna Saturday, May 11, 2013 EPIC Pictures Group is preparing a film about the life of Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi that is set to debut at theat-ers coinciding with the start of the 2014 World Cup, the digital edition of Variety reported on Wednesday. The film, which will be in the style of Rocky, according to the publication, will be based on the biography Messi: The In-Lionel Messi side Story of the Boy Who Became a Legend, by Luca Caioli. Epic will undertake to finance and produce the film. Epic’s chiefs, Patrick Ewald and Shaked Berenson, are currently negotiating with scriptwriters and directors to take the reins of the project. Messi, 25, who plays for FC Barcelona and the Argen-tine national team, is considered to be the best soccer player in the world at present. In January, he made history by becoming the first soccer player to win FIFA’s Ballon d’Or prize for the fourth consecutive time. The producers are intending to focus the story on Messi’s childhood, his humble beginnings and how he overcame his physical disadvantages, especially his five-foot-seven-inch height, to become one of the best players of all time. “The goal is to make a powerful and positive film that will leave audiences feeling inspired to go after their dreams no matter how impossible they may seem,” Ewald said. Jennifer Lawrence suffering from hair fall? OSCAR winning actress Jennifer Law-rence is reportedly suffering from hair loss and hiding it from everyone. The 22-year-old has been sporting shorter hair and it can be side effects of chemical treatments, reports dailys-tar.co.uk. “She’s been sporting a shorter do for weeks, and has made out it’s for style reasons. But really she chopped her hair off because it’s been falling out of her head,” a source said. “Jennifer’s had so many chemical Jennifer Lawrence treatments and extensions the only thing she could do to make her hair healthy again was to start over. She’s getting really paranoid about it,” the source added. Rihanna booed in Boston, cheered on in Brooklyn RIHANNA was booed for turning up late at a concert in Boston, but the audi-ence in New York cheered her on even though she didn’t start on time the following night. BOLLYWOOD Saturday, May 11, 2013 Don’t think I want to make sleazy comedies: Saif The idea behind Go Goa Gone was also to cater to the audience which wants “new and exciting” genres and storylines Saif Ali Khan in the film Go Goa Gone. IANS A CTOR-PRODUCER Saif Ali Khan is treading new terri-tories with Go Goa Gone - a zombie comedy, after mak-ing romance-based enter-tainers like Love Aaj Kal and Cocktail, but he’s quite sure he won’t ever make a “sleazy” comedy. There’s a thin line between “naugh-ty” and “sleazy”, he believes. Why is comedy all about sleaze nowadays? “Everything should have a represent-- ative, I guess! So, also have a branch of comedy, which is sleazy, but I suppose there is an audience for that as well. There are different kinds of people in our country, and you’ve got to cater to all.” “But I don’t think I want to make a sleazy film. I’d rather make a naughty one,” the 42-year-old said over phone from Mumbai. Go Goa Gone, his production and acting venture, releases on May 10. Star-ring Kunal Kemmu, Vir Das and Anand Tiwari in key roles, the movie, as Saif believes, is a “naughty” kind! While the movie has been heavily promoted as a ‘zombie’ film, Saif says it’s not all that “zombie”. “It’s a very urban movie, it’s a funny one and not aimed at buying anyone into the theory of the zombie. It is es-sentially a story of these three boys and their ridiculous adventures. So, I think it’s nice if we can just laugh a little bit without thinking what’s a zom-bie and all of that,” he said. The idea behind Go Goa Gone was also to cater to the audience which wants “new and exciting” genres and sto-rylines. “The audience is ready and maturing. So it is up to us now to give them the content. I remember Kunal (Kemmu) came up to me with this script, and said this is a comedy about zombies. At first I was apprehensive to try something new, to produce something new, but then when I read the script, I laughed out loud quite a number of times.” “I believe the audience will laugh too,” Saif said. The budget for the film, he said, was “not very much”. But he promises they haven’t “cheated” the audience. He said the crew shot a lot on beaches and in jungles of Mauritius, besides getting Hollywood experts to work on the zombies’ make-up. Saif’s own look is different in the film - he sports blonde locks. In fact my brother is 22 years old and my mother feels his age of marriage has passed,” Kangana said at an event. When asked if she would go for a love or an arranged marriage, Kangana re-fused to answer. Kangana’s mother Asha who was accompanying her at the event was all praise for her. “She is very dedi-cated and hardworking since childhood. She has achieved success here (films) on her own, without any godfather. I am very much happy with her achievements. We have faith in her that she would reach more ahead in her career,” Asha said. During the candid chat, Kangana said that her mother would beat her with broom because she was a very naughty girl. “My mom has taught me everything right from cooking to cleaning work...So if not an actor, my career was otherwise set..,” she said. On the initiative, Kangana said it was imperative to show sensitivity towards one’s mother and try to fulfil her dreams. The event also saw actress Shraddha Kapoor accompanied by her mother Shivangi and director Abhishek Kapoor by his mother Madhubala. “Mothers always focus on their kids. I have brought a lot of disappointments to her but her love has remained same. I wish I could do all those things that she did for me,” Abhishek said. Recollecting some of the moments, Shraddha said her mother has been tak-ing very good care of her right from what she likes to eat and running behind her for all the little things. All three of them tried to take their mothers down the memory lane and brought forward their hobbies. The MMS video clip doing the rounds on the internet and mobile phones shows the Pakistani bombshell with Indian actor Rajan Verma. “It’s a beautiful scene... Beautiful intimate song sung by Rekha Bharad-waj. We are not romancing... It’s an intimate scene between the characters Madhuri (enacted by Malik) and Birju (played by Verma),” said the actress who shot to limelight in India with Bigg Boss in 2010. Zindagi 50-50, where Veena plays a worker in Mumbai, is slated for a May 24 release. Aiming high, the 26-year-old wants to work with all the three Khans of the Hindi film industry. “I would like a bit of Shah Rukh (Khan), a bit of Salman (Khan) and M Veena Malik a bit of Aamir Khan. I would go with Aamir for his acting, Shah Rukh for his romance and Salman’s Dabangg style,” Veena said. The actress has already signed a couple of more Hindi films including Haroon Rashid’s The City That Never Sleeps. ULTI-STARRERS have been more lucky for Tusshar Kapoor than his solo releases and the actor says he is comfortable sharing the screen space with others as long as his role is good. Tusshar’s most recent release Shootout at Wadala had John Abraham in the lead with actors like Anil Kapoor and Manoj Bajpayee playing key roles. “I believe if I put my soul in the char-acter it will have more impact. And I don’t believe if other actors are there my role will go unnoticed. I believe we are all actors and we all have our share in the pie and I am not insecure about it,” Tusshar said in an interview. The actor began his Bolly-wood journey with actress Kareena Kapoor in Satish Kaushik’s love-story Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai back in 2001. Since then, he has been a part of suc-cessful multi-starrers like Golmaal, Shoot-out at Lokhandwala”, The Dirty Picture and Kya Kool Hain Hum. “I think if people typecast me with one genre then I surprise them with different roles for instance if there was a Golmaal and Kyaa Kool Hai Hum then I have also done Khakhee and Shor in the city and there was also The Dirty Picture. “I think the audience has accepted me in diverse roles. Even if I get typecast I Tusshar Kapoor would have no issues with it as long I am building a fan base and it also means I am good at doing action and comedy that are both poles apart,” Tusshar said. He plays Sheikh Munir who is part of the Maanya Surve’s gang in Shootout at Wadala. The actor was also a part of prequel film Shootout at Lokhandwala in 2007. “My character in Lokhandwala, ‘Dilip Bhuwa’ was a psychotic killer while the role in Wadala is of someone who has been in the world of crime since childhood. He is more experienced and knows when to control his aggression,” Tusshar explained. The 36-year-old said he had a won-derful experience filming for Shootout at Wadala as he knows Abraham since his school days and both of them have similar temperament. Tusshar said he would like to experiment with horror or dance film in the future. His next release would be a comedy thriller Bhajathe Raho. NATURE Saturday, May 11, 2013 Elephants communicate in sound & sign language NYT SYNDICATE E LEPHANTS may use a vari-- ety of subtle movements and gestures to communicate with one another, according to researchers who have studied the big mammals in the wild for decades. To the casual human observer, a curl of the trunk, a step backward, or a fold of the ear may not have meaning. But to an elephant and scientists like Joyce Poole these are signals that convey vital infor-mation to individual elephants and the overall herd. Biologist and conservationist Joyce Poole and her husband, Petter Granli, both of whom direct Elephant Voices, a charity they founded to research and advocate for conservation of elephants in various sanctuaries in Africa, have developed an online database decoding hundreds of distinct elephant signals and gestures. The postures and move-ments underscore the sophistication of elephant communication, they say. Poole and Granli have also deciphered the meaning of acoustic communication in elephants, interpreting the different rumbling, roaring, screaming, trumpet-ing, and other idiosyncratic sounds that elephants make in concert with postures such as the positioning and flapping of their ears. Poole has studied elephants in Africa for more than 37 years, but only began developing the online gestures database in the past decade. Some of her research and conservation work has been funded by the National Geographic Society. “I noticed that when I would take out guests visiting Amboseli (National Park in Kenya) and was narrating the elephants’ behaviour, I got to the point where 90 percent of the time, I could predict what the elephant was about to do,” Poole said in an interview. “If they stood a certain way, they were afraid and were about to retreat, or (in another way) they were angry and were about to move toward and threaten another.” Over the course of thousands of hours of observations, Poole came to understand and essentially translate what elephants were communicating to one another. She was also the first to discover musth in African elephants, a state of heightened sexual and aggres-- Saturday, May 11, 2013 Over the course of thousands of hours of observations, Biologist Poole came to understand and essentially translate what elephants were communicating to one another. She was also the first to discover musth in African elephants sive activity in males, during which they display characteristic behaviours such as the gestures classified in the database as ear-wave, trunk-bounce-drag, head-toss, chin-in, and the distinctive musth-walk, a sort of elephant strut. As Poole was working in the bush, her husband, who has a communications background, immediately saw the value of raising public awareness of the sophis-ticated behaviour of these charismatic animals and was eager to share what they were learning. “Petter said, ‘Let’s get this out there and make it available for people,”’ Poole explained. Poole and Granli began the process of characterising the gestures and displays they were seeing in their field-work. They created nine overarching categories for their gestures database: attentive, aggressive, ambivalent, de-fensive, social integration, mother-off-spring, sexual, play and death (since el-ephants have marked behaviour around dead companions). “Elephants can be drama queens and really expressive, or they can be incred-ibly subtle and understated. It depends on what’s going on and the dynamics of the group,” Poole said. This is the drama queen stuff, though in this case, it serves to attract other, more distant males.” And then there are the subtler ges-tures, such as the attentive category’s freezing posture, which elephants use when they detect a possible threat. Ele-phant rumbles contain very low frequen-cies, some of which people cannot hear. Elephants can detect the more powerful of these sounds from several miles away, and these same vibrations travel seismi-cally through the ground even farther. Picking up on these signals may cause elephants to freeze as a group and hold completely still, Poole explained. “Someone might freeze at the back of the group first,” Poole said, “and im-mediately then everyone else picks up the sounds we can’t hear and the vibra-tions we don’t feel.” Elephants have been observed responding to sounds like other elephants, vehicles and stamped-ing zebras from over a mile away, as well as distant thunder and earthquakes. Reacting appropriately to these sounds is important for their survival. Sense of Humour Poole recalls how elephants at play used to charge her car, appearing to trip and fall while tusking the ground (tuskground gesture) in front of her vehicle. “I used to think that they really did trip no longer!” Poole said. “I have seen it enough times to know that pretending to fall over in front of the car is all part of the fun. It is one of the behaviours that led me to say that elephants have a sense of self and a sense of humour. They know that they are funny.” RHYTHM Saturday, May 11, 2013 “The fact is that a lot of these young ar-tistes do not under-stand these civil rights issues, do not un-derstand history and what it is that people are offended by” Lil Wayne Mountain Dew in crisis over Lil Wayne lyric NYT SYNDICATE H OW much street cred is too much? For executives at Moun-tain Dew, that may have been the question of the day on Monday, as the brand looked to move beyond a public relations embarrass-ment that had led it to end a multimil-lion-dollar endorsement deal with the rapper Lil Wayne. The brand severed its ties because of pressure brought by the family of Emmett Till, the AfricanAmerican teenager whose 1955 torture and murder in Mississippi for suppos-edly whistling at a white woman helped foment the civil rights movement. The family took up issue of vulgar lyr-ics referring to Till that were performed by Lil Wayne on a remix of Karate Chop, by the rapper Future. In an interview with the website AllHipHop.com in April, the family said it would put pres-sure on the brand, which is part of the PepsiCo Americas Beverages division of PepsiCo, to drop the artiste; Mountain Dew did so on Friday. Sarah Cunningham, a publicist for Lil Wayne, attributed the split to what she called “creative differences” between the artiste and the brand and described it as “an amicable parting.” A representative for Mountain Dew declined to answer specific questions about the Lil Wayne situation, but said in a statement: “We do not plan any additional work with Lil Wayne moving forward. His offensive reference to a revered civil rights icon does not reflect the values of our brand.” Pressure on Lil Wayne began build-ing in February when the Till family issued an open letter in which Airickca Gordon-Taylor, a family representative, wrote in a letter to him that “when you spit lyrics” like these, “not only are you destroying the preservation and legacy of Emmett Till’s memory and name, but the impact of his murder in black history along with degradation of women.” Last week Lil Wayne, whose given name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, is-sued a letter to the Till family in which he acknowledged how his “contribution to a fellow artiste’s song has deeply of-fended your family.” He continued, “As a father myself, I cannot imagine the pain that your family has had to endure.” The family was not satisfied with that response and instead called for a meet-- ing with executives at PepsiCo. At the same time, a publicist for the family said, they found an additional way to pressure Mountain Dew: to bring to public atten-tion an offensive Mountain Dew video ad created by the hip-hop producer and rap artist known as Tyler, the Creator, that featured a battered white waitress, band-aged and on crutches, trying to identify her assailant from a lineup that included African-American men and a goat. That ad prompted a flurry of media attention, and Mountain Dew pulled the ad on Wednesday. Two days later it sev-ered its relationship with Lil Wayne. Kimberly Wilson, a publicist for the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Founda-tion, named for Emmett Till’s mother, said that the issue for the family was the lack of a timely response from Lil Wayne and the context in which Till’s name was used in the song. The Rev Al Sharpton, who has been in touch with both execu-tives of PepsiCo and the Till family, said he had scheduled a meeting with the two parties, which he will attend, in New York on Wednesday. In a telephone interview Sharpton said he had also been in contact with Lil Wayne’s management. He described the issue as a “teaching moment” for both the brand and the artist. “The fact is that a lot of these young artistes do not understand these civil rights issues, do not understand history and what it is that people are offended by,” he said. “The corporations become insensitive because they are profit-driven and have no regard for what’s going on in our communities.” Wilson said the foundation had re-ceived comments from people saying the family should, in fact, be “grateful to Lil Wayne for even saying his name.” She added: “The one thing this issue definitely brought to light is that some people didn’t even know who Emmett Till was.” Both the brand and the artiste are to blame, Sharpton said. “The brand wants street cred, the artiste gives them something that’s outrageous – and when the streets turn on them, the artiste becomes expendable,” he said. Steve Stoute, founder of Translation LLC, an ad agency that has worked with artistes like Jay-Z and clients like CocaCola and Budweiser, said marketers needed to know what they were getting into before they made deals with celebri-ties. Pay attention to everything you say and do. However, you might dream up genius-like ideas. Who knows? Keep an eye on your money today. If shopping, count your change and keep your receipts. You might find money; you might lose money. Guard your possessions against loss or theft. You might be a bit rash and impul-sive today. It would behoove you to count to three before you say or do anything. Don’t fly off the handle. Unexpected solutions to old problems might appear today. You also might find something that you lost, because that which is hidden can be revealed. A friend might amaze you by doing something outrageous today. Or alternatively, you might meet someone who is a real character. Expect a few surprises in group situations. Don’t be lippy or rebellious with authority figures today because you might regret it. Nevertheless, a boss, parent, teacher or member of the police might throw you a curveball. (Don’t quit your day job.) Ditto for anything having to do with higher education. Nevertheless, this is a fascinating day full of interesting detours. Surprise gifts, goodies and favors from others might come your way today. Keep your pockets open. You have earned whatever comes your way. Partners and close friends might do something unusual or demand more space and freedom in the relationship. Even casual encounters with the public might introduce you to someone unusual. Power outages, staff shortages and computer crashes might cause delays at work today. Introduction of new technology also is likely. Others might learn surprising news that can benefit their health. This is a mildly accident-prone day for your kids, so be extra vigilant. Romance will hold few surprises. Be on guard! The outcome of sports events could be surprising. Unexpected company might drop by at home today. Small appliances could break down, or minor breakages could occur. It’s a crapshoot, but at least, it’s not a boring day.
