THE UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF AN LV SITE DIRECTOR

Lasallian Volunteers change the
world one child at a time. These courageous, young adults make a difference in
the lives of whom they minister by helping
to make up for the differences that are so
often lacking in their lives. La Salle Academy in Philadelphia, PA, has been (over the
last six years) blessed with the presence of
five Lasallian Volunteers: Paul Sevcik, Sara
Vogelpohl, Denis Block, Thais Hunter
and Sara Clements. On August 30th, La
Salle Academy welcomed Mike Fedoruk as
the new LV for the 2010-2011 school year.
As principal of La Salle Academy during that time, I have witnessed and have
been inspired by the many ways these
LVs have touched the hearts of not only
our students but also of our faculty, staff
and families as well. In addition to my
participation in the Lasallian Leadership
Institute, working with the Lasallian Volunteers has helped me know and appreciate what it means to be Lasallian. The LVs
truly live out the Brothers of the Christian
Schools’ commitment to faith, community and service.
La Salle Academy is blessed to share
in the charism of the Brothers of the
Christian Schools and the Sisters of St.
Joseph. While living in community with
the Brothers, our LVs over the years, have
also been and continue to be a vital part of
the La Salle Academy Community working with our faculty to touch hearts and
change minds so that all may be one. The
LVs arrive at school in time each day to
pray with the faculty before the school day
begins and as young adults their modeling of faith in action witnesses to our students in a way that older faculty members
cannot. This past week students prayed
during morning assembly for our former
Lasallian Volunteers.
Relationships built over the LVs
year(s) of service have a lasting impact
on the students at La Salle Academy. As
St. John Baptist de La Salle charged his
brothers “to be brothers” to the children
they taught, the Lasallian Volunteers form
relationships with our students. One of
my fondest memories of all the LVs is
each of them talking to and playing with

F.S.C. Awards
O
n Thursday, July 29th, over two
dozen LV Alums joined the 57
2010-2011 Lasallian Volunteers
(along with many Brothers and friends)
at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ, for the presentation of the
first annual Lasallian Volunteers F.S.C.
Awards. The F.S.C. Awards are the program’s way to show appreciation to individuals whose involvement in the mission makes LV service possible.
Recipients of the F.S.C. Awards are
honored in the spirit of three Christian
Brothers who embodied the Lasallian
Volunteers values of faith, service and
community during their lifetime, and
provide a powerful statement to volunteers early on about the deep traditions
of this life changing program they have
joined.
The awards will be presented annually at or around LV Orientation,
and will be rotated among the Brothers’
three Districts. The 2011 awards will be
presented in the Midwest District, while
2012 awards ceremony will be in the
Bay Area.

The Johnston Faith Award was named in honor
of Brother John Johnston, FSC (1933-2007). Brother
John was an avid supporter of the LVs, and made it a
point to know what was happening with current volunteers, vocally supporting the service LVs provided
in Christian Brothers ministries across the country,
and meeting them whenever the chance arose.
Recipients Tom and Joanne Darnowski have been
involved in the LV program for many years, playing
a variety of roles including serving on the advisory
board, finance committee, and financially supporting the program. Not only is Tom a former Christian
Brother from the legacy New York District, most importantly, he and Joanne have been a consistent presence and guide to the LVs serving at Martin de Porres
in Springfield Gardens, NY.

to not only the LVs, but to the
Lasallian Mission and the students entrusted to your care at

“Being a Brother — being associated with the
Brothers and continuing to work in Lasallian Mission —
is something I didn’t lose,” said Tom. “There is probably
nothing I would have done in the last 50 years, anyone I have been able to touch and help, and any
ministry I’ve been a part of — none of that would have happened if I hadn’t said the first “yes.”
Our presence here acknowledges that link. My hope for the volunteers is that if you let it get into you and resonate with you, it is something that you will
never lose. It will help form and focus you for the rest of your life.”
Named for Brother Christopher Bassen, FSC (1942-2006), the award recognizes an alumnus of the
Lasallian Volunteers who has continued a life of service since their volunteer years.
Brother Chris Bassen lived and breathed
the Lasallian mission, and made real his dream of the
Lasallian Educational Opportunities (L.E.O.) Center
in Oakland, CA, which provides educational opportunities to under-served individuals.
Thank you for being a wonderful mentor to me these past
two years. Your presence at San
Miguel is instrumental in creating the “magic” that transforms so many hearts, and
your work to further the Lasallian mission is doing the same.
Heather Ruple graduated from Saint Mary’s
College of CA in 2001 and served as a Lasallian Volunteer at the San Miguel School Providence until

2003. After serving as an LV, Heather continued at
San Miguel as a teacher and today is the academic
dean. She remains heavily involved with Lasallian
Volunteers through her presentations at Orientation and Debriefing Retreats, and her participation in the second Lasallian Community Workshop. During her time at San Miguel,
Heather has mentored and supported many LVs.
“This is a huge honor,” Heather began. “I am humbled when I think over the last 10 years
and the impact the Lasallian Volunteers has had on my life, when I think of the high points and
the low points of my life and all those in between, Lasallian Volunteers and Lasallian family
have been there — and I am so grateful.”

In honor of Brother Michael Farrell, FSC, (1940-2009) who lived
in shared community with Lasallian Volunteers for 10 years. While living
with LVs, Michael went out of his way to walk beside them, learn the
intricacies of their stories and lives, and challenge their growth. All the
while, Michael invited and expected LVs to do the same.
This award recognizes a Christian Brother/Lasallian Partner who
has lived in community with Lasallian Volunteers and who holds the
community experience in high esteem.
After many years teaching and administering at West Philadelphia Catholic High School, St. John’s College High School, St. Frances
Academy and other schools of the legacy Baltimore District, Brother Ed
recently joined the West Catholic Community in Yeadon, PA, and he
tutors students at West Catholic. Ed has shared community with Lasallian Volunteers for many years helping to mentor and advise these young
men and women.
“The volunteers have done a lot more for me and for the Brothers I
live with than we gave them. I appreciate the tremendous sacrifices that
you make, giving a year or two of your young lives. I encourage all of
you new volunteers to enter into this work with enthusiasm and bring
the idealism that you have. Because as we get older, it’s easy for us to lose
some of that fire. To be effective with the children, you’ve got to have fire
and passion. And we need help from you to keep that.”

we provide to LVs, sites and communities. The 10-11 LVs see the importance of their service and want to
ensure that volunteers will continue
to serve in the years to come. They
have committed to running in the
Memphis Marathon, Half Marathon
and 5k on Saturday, December 4th
to help raise funds to enable the LV program to provide quality support as the program grows. We hope you will enjoy reading all the
reflections in the newsletter and consider a way you can support the
program, through your prayers, time, talents or financial contributions.
This fall marks our largest group of Lasallian Volunteers ever with
58 LVs. As the program grows, the staff is working to continue to
provide quality support and services to the volunteers, sites and
communities. Even with such a large group, a wonderful sense of
community was built among the volunteers at Orientation, with the
leadership of the second year LVs and LV Alums in attendance. You
will get a sense of this as you read Tom Magrini’s reflection on his
experience as a first year LV attending Orientation.
Our expansion into new sites and communities is a testament
to the important role LVs play in the lives of the children and families they serve, as reflected on by one of our site directors. The 10-11
LVs are joining the many who have gone before them by making a
difference in the lives of the students and clients they serve throughout the country.

all of us in trusting in God’s providence. Ms. Thais bravely agreed to
teach Art, an area that she believed not to be one of her strengths. Over
her two years of service, Thais discovered a talent she wasn’t aware
she possessed while helping our students uncover their own artistic
abilities.

by our young students giving them the confidence to develop new
relationships. Our students enjoy hearing about the lives of the LVs.
Through sharing stories of their families and what it was like growing up in Chicago, Wisconsin, California, and more, the LVs bridge
the distance from their hometowns to life in Philadelphia helping our
students appreciate the
commonality which they
share and enabling them
to be more understanding
and tolerant of those from
other places and life experiences.
The fact that LVs return each year to celebrate
the eighth grade graduation speaks to our students
not only of the value that
the volunteers place on
education but of the value
and love the LVs have for
the students. The class of
2010 could not believe
that Mr. Denis traveled
from California last June
to celebrate with them.
Students were thrilled
when Ms. Sara (Vogelpohl)
flew from Honduras to
Chicago and then to Philadelphia last January just to visit with them
before returning to the Finca del Nino. Mr. Paul has even returned as
a guest speaker, sharing information with the students about what he
has learned from his travels since he has entered the business world.

LSA – Make it Shine! We are grateful for the spark that the Lasallian Volunteers have always been to help make La Salle Academy and
especially our students’ shine. It is because of the volunteers who “Let
their light shine before all” that our students, families, faculty and
staff, “can see the good that they do and give glory to God.”
The Lasallian Volunteers enable La Salle Academy to provide a
holistic education to our students by serving as Technology, Art and
Physical Education teachers. This proves to be challenging for the LVs
especially since many of them do not have a background in education.

the decision of a lifetime

“Hi Tom. This is
a phone call that could
change your life.” It was
mid-August and I answered
my ringing cell phone and
heard these words. It was a
job offer. The head of the

to go to Orientation for the
Lasallian Volunteers in three days. I only had a
few hours to decide because the school needed
an answer that day.
I decided the opportunity the LV program
presented me with was once in a lifetime, and I
would regret passing up on the LVs more than
I would regret passing up a job back at home.
As soon as I walked in the door at La Salle
University, I was surrounded by the second year
LVs, all clad in the new 2010 LV shirts. They all
immediately introduced themselves with a smile
and offered to help me bring my belongings to
my room.
Within hours, everyone was there — all 57
volunteers, the staff, a few Brothers and a couple
of alumni who decided to help out for the week.
I’ll admit I was pretty nervous going in, but my
nerves were eased by the openness of the second
years, the staff, and also the fact that a few of
my friends and fellow first year LVs from Manhattan College arrived. We acted as each other’s
security blankets for the first day or so, but then
we were able to branch out as the days went on
and get to know most of the group beyond their
names and service sites.
My week with this group of people confirmed my decision to be a part of the program.
There are other service programs out there, but
the support that is given from the staff, the
Brothers, and the network of volunteers is unparalleled. In early June, I traveled to Yakima
for my site visit and knew that the community,
the school and the surrounding area would be a
good fit for me and getting to know the other
people I would be associated with assured me it
was a great program.
All week at Orientation, I found myself
wishing that all 57 of us could be in the same
placement. But the reality we faced at orientation was the fact that as quickly as the 20102011 LV family came together, we would be dispersed throughout the nation to places such as
San Francisco, Tucson, Chicago, New Orleans,
Racine, WI, and New York City. What has been
comforting about this scenario, however, is that
we can all be counted on to be there for each
other no matter what the distance or time difference is between us.
In the few short weeks I have been living in
the Pacific Northwest, I have spoken with many
of the other LVs about their service, my service,
our communities, and life in general. It is extremely comforting to know that even though
someone may be thousands of miles away on
a different side of the country, they have some

The final week of July gave 57 new friends
the chance to laugh, tell stories and great opportunities to get a feel for the program we
had joined. Those few days were packed with
icebreakers, other bonding activities, and sessions for us to learn about what to expect in the
upcoming year, from service to prayer to living
with the Brothers. From conquering the ropes
course at St. Gabriel’s Hall in Audubon, PA, to
the intense games of cards at the evening socials,
to the night out in Philly, to the early morning
yoga – yes, we did yoga — I had a blast with all
I often think of how I went from being a
guy whose ideal setting was teaching a few miles
from the Jersey Shore and Atlantic Ocean, to the
person who is teaching in a high school 2,868
miles from home on the west coast. Going to
Orientation made that thought a little bit clearer thanks to all the people I met and spoke to
that week. That phone call and job offer would
have changed my life without a doubt. But after spending just a week as part of the Lasallian
Volunteers, I could see that my life was already
changed.

A Legacy for the Future
An endowment trust created to provide for the long-term needs of the LV
program. In addition to providing essential support for current needs, we are
encouraging donors to consider direct legacy gifts to our endowment fund to
ensure a source of permanent support for the Lasallian Volunteers. Just like your
own savings or investment provide you with a degree of security, an endowment
gives the Lasallian Volunteers a stable source of funding we can count on no
matter what the future holds. There are many ways you can include the LVs as a part of your enduring legacy
through an endowment gift while preserving financial security for yourself and your
loved ones.

Colleen McGeehan (9394, Holy Name School, New
York, NY) traveled to Verettes,
Haiti to work with a retired US
couple who run an orphanage
for children with HIV. It was an
intense experience and Colleen
was happy to give the couple
a respite from daily child care
duties. She went with another
Highbridge Community Life
Center employee.
Erin Arnold (02-03,
Highbridge Community Life
Center, Bronx, NY) completed
the Lake Placid Ironman on
July 25, 2010 in 13:10:55. The
race included a 2.4 mile swim,
112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile
run. Next up? Participating in
LVs Running in Memphis!
Tom Cook (02-04, Holy
Family Catholic Worker,
Kansas City, MO) is a full
time student at the Catholic
Theological Union in Chicago
studying Biblical Ministry.
Leo Guardado (04-05,
Bishop Loughlin Memorial
High School, Brooklyn,
NY) is now working for the
Most Holy Trinity Catholic
Church in Tucson, AZ as their
director for Social Ministry.
Much of the work has to
do with organizing events
and providing educational
opportunities for parishioners
around various justice issues,
especially immigration. The
parish is very socially active
and committed to living out
Catholic Social Teaching, so
Leo also supports and provides
assistance to the many service
and advocacy groups in the
parish. If any volunteers
(current or former) want to visit
the border and see firsthand
the “gaping wound” of the
American immigration system,
just let Leo know. He can be

Derek Nelson (05-06, Holy
Family Catholic Worker,
Kansas City, MO) graduated
from Des Moines University in
May. He’s currently a Resident
at Methodist Hospital in Des
Moines, IA. He and Christine
(Cepress) Nelson (05-06,
Resurrection School, New
York, NY) will be moving to
Rochester, MN in June where
he will continue his residency
program at The Mayo Clinic
for the next 3 years. They
are looking forward to being
“home” in MN and closer to
family and friends.

Denis Block (07-09, La Salle
Academy, Philadelphia, PA)
is studying for his Master of
Business Administration with a
Finance Concentration at Saint
Mary’s College of California.
He is also a Lasallian Scholar
living with the Santiago Living
Community.
Joe Kolar (07-09, St. Frances
Academy, Baltimore, MD)
spent the summer interning
in the Office of Justice, Peace,
and Human Development at
the USCCB in Washington, D.C.
Being out East allowed him to
reconnect with the Brothers at
Brentwood, Ammendale, and
Philadelphia, as well as with
a few LV alums and the fine
people of the LV Staff. He has
since returned to Notre Dame
where he continues to work
towards a Master of Divinity.
This year Joe is serving as an
Assistant Rector in Duncan
Hall, the newest men’s dorm on
campus. Finally, Joe is proud
to welcome former LV Tim
Fehringer and the Nebraska
Cornhuskers to the Big Ten
Conference beginning in 2011.
Justine Davies (07-08, LEO
Center, Oakland, CA) spent
July in live-in discernment with
the Sisters of Resurrection, in
Castleton, NY. During her time
with the sisters she volunteered
three days a week at La Salle
School in Albany, working in
the Science Department. This
September, Justine entered into
community with the Sisters of
the Resurrection as an affiliate.
She left her position at St.
Raymond High School for Boys
in the Bronx and will now be
teaching science and religion at
La Salle Institute in Troy.
Sandra Sanchez (06-08, La
Salle Academy, New York, NY)
graduated from Manhattan
College in May, 2010 with a
M.A. in School Counseling.
She is currently working for
BronxWorks, a non-profit
organization, at Jill Chaifetz
Transfer School as an Advisor in
the South Bronx.
Daniel Maher (07-09, La Salle
School, Albany, NY) is living
the dream. Same stuff, different
day. Another day in paradise.
Scott Baietti (08-10, La
Salle School, Albany, NY) is
a recent recipient of the LV
Scholarship at Lewis University
in Romeoville, IL. Scott is
studying for his MA in School
Counseling and Guidance,
while working in the Student
Services department as a
Graduate Assistant.
Sara Vogelpohl (06-08, La
Salle Academy, Philadelphia,
PA) will be leaving the Finca
del Nino in Honduras in early
December after 27 months
of volunteering as a social
worker. She will travel for two
weeks with her volunteer group
through Mexico and be home
in time for her first Christmas
home in two years! Sara plans

Kevin Kuczynski (08-10,
LEO Center, Oakland, CA) has
moved back to his hometown
of Philadelphia. He is currently
working and studying on
scholarship at Holy Family
University. Kevin is part of
graduate research project
where he works with a mentally
and physically disabled man
at various jobs and community
rehabilitation. He is studying
Secondary Education: English
and in his spare time he runs
with the Holy Family Cross
Country Team.
Thais Hunter (08-10, La Salle
Academy, Philadelphia, PA)
works for Liberty Resources
as an Assistant Instruction
Specialist teaching prevocational skills to persons with
disabilities and lives in Mt.
Airy, PA
Andy Weingarten (08-10,
San Juan Diego Middle School
and John XXIII Educational
Center, Racine, WI) started a
Masters program in Counseling
at Manhattan College. He
is working as an Assistant
Resident Director of a residence
hall and Secretary for the
Middle States Reaccreditation
project. He is excited to be
moderating a service trip to
Ecuador in January 2011.
Bro. Ed Phelan has been
at his best gathering current
LVs and Alums for a variety
of events. In early August, he
gathered with some LV Alums
in Minneapolis in order to visit
and share stories. The event
was affectionately termed the
first annual “Phelan Institute.”
Bro. Ed and the Bedford Park
community also put on a great
outdoor “drive in” movie night
at the community. Great fun
was had by all.
