One foundation raising funds for the two faces of an extraordinary mission Scholarships for Underprivileged Children EDUCATION • FAITH • HOPE Lasallian Christian Brothers F O U N D A T I O N Lifelong Care for the Brothers VOCATIONS • FORMATION • LIFELONG NEEDS Student: Luke Johnson De La Salle North Catholic High School, 2005 St. Mary’s College of CA, 2009 Luke Johnson arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from war-torn Liberia, after losing his father to the civil war and spending three years in a Ghanaian refugee camp. In 2000, Catholic Charities resettled his family, including his mother and eight siblings, in Portland. He attended two Western Region Lasallian schools on scholarship and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences. After graduation, he dedicated a year of service to the Lasallian Volunteer Corps as a teacher, coach, and afterschool coordinator at San Miguel Middle School in Tulsa. Currently, Luke is studying for his Master’s Degree in public health at La Salle University. at what the Lasallian Brothers did for “ Looking me, I wanted to give back to them. My Lasallian family has always been there for me, supporting me, even sheltering me; they helped me build the foundation for using my life to make a difference. ” Brother: Brother John James O’Neill Novitiate, 1946; Final Vows, 1953 Active Service, 1950-2004 Brother John taught all over the U.S. and in the Philippines, Palestine, and Africa, including service to the poorest of the poor. He joyfully observed the enthusiasm and wonder that small children bring to learning. Brother John built strong connections with young people, recognizing the benefit during the delicate transitional teen years; sometimes, he was the only stable force in a student’s life. Now, he humbly tends to the needs of the Brothers by chopping wood, collecting mail, and grocery shopping, while never failing to take time for everyone he encounters. Brother John’s prayer life is centered on the needs of present day students and all who assist them in the schools. Brothers respond to the needs of the poor “ The by preparing individuals to succeed in the world. Though I no longer directly serve as an educator, I view this as a privileged time in my life.
