Student: Luke Johnson
De La Salle North Catholic High School, 2005
St. Mary’s College of CA, 2009
Luke Johnson arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from
war-torn Liberia, after losing his father to the civil war
and spending three years in a Ghanaian refugee camp.
In 2000, Catholic Charities resettled his family, including
his mother and eight siblings, in Portland. He attended
two Western Region Lasallian schools on scholarship and
earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences.
After graduation, he dedicated a year of service to the
Lasallian Volunteer Corps as a teacher, coach, and afterschool coordinator at San Miguel Middle School in Tulsa.
Currently, Luke is studying for his Master’s Degree
in public health at La Salle University.

my time, my service, was a form of saying thank
you. My Lasallian family has always been there
for me, supporting me, even sheltering me; they
helped me build the foundation for using my life
to make a difference.

Brother: Brother John James O’Neill
Novitiate, 1946; Final Vows, 1953
Active Service, 1950-2004
Brother John taught all over the U.S. and in the
Philippines, Palestine, and Africa, including service
to the poorest of the poor. He joyfully observed the
enthusiasm and wonder that small children bring
to learning. Brother John built strong connections with
young people, recognizing the benefit during the delicate
transitional teen years; sometimes, he was the only stable
force in a student’s life. Now, he humbly tends to the
needs of the Brothers by chopping wood, collecting mail,
and grocery shopping, while never failing to take time
for everyone he encounters. Brother John’s prayer life
is centered on the needs of present day students and all
who assist them in the schools.

by preparing individuals to succeed in the world.
Though I no longer directly serve as an educator,
I view this as a privileged time in my life. I’m
not ‘retiring from,’ but ‘retiring to.’ I don’t have
parents to work with or papers to grade, and I
can spend my days serving the Brothers in my
community.

“ For over 330 years, the Christian Brothers have followed in the footsteps
of St. John Baptist de La Salle, providing the young, especially the
impoverished, with education, faith, and hope. With your help,
we continue that work today, operating twelve schools right here in the
Western Region. The Lasallian Christian Brothers Foundation (LCBF)
raises funds to provide scholarships for students at the very bottom
of the income scale and to support the Brothers’ lifelong needs, including
new vocations, formation, and quality care; we direct these donations
to where they are most needed. When you give, you support the two
faces of our extraordinary mission. Thank you so much for your support
and your prayers—we are truly grateful.
