MERCY DAY
Thank you to all of
the students who
made our Mercy Day
celebration on the last
day of Term 3 such a
memorable occasion, the attendance
and involvement of students was quite
exceptional. The change of venue and
introduction of new activities seemed
to work really well. Thanks to the
Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Education
Limited staff who celebrated the day
with us and a huge thanks to the Faith
team, each of the houses and student
leaders who made the day such a
success. Catherine McAuley would
have been in her element enjoying the
hospitality and spirit of the day. The
growing sense of Mercy identity and
appreciation of the Mercy values was
obvious, thank you to all who gave
their service and donated to the day.
We look forward to next year’s Mercy
Day watching the event as it continues
to grow. Next year the newlyrefurbished quadrangle will be a great
setting for the entertainment.
YEAR 12
Next week our Year 12 students
celebrate their last week before
starting exams. On Friday the students
will have a formal catered breakfast,
a rite of passage event and then the
final assembly later in the morning
with the whole College in attendance.
In the evening they will celebrate mass
at the Cathedral. The students have
impressed staff with their diligence and
work ethic throughout the year. Their
dedication has been evident in their
attendance at practice exams through
the holidays and their focus since
returning this term. We wish them
every success in their final days. There
was an assembly with the Year 12s this
week to outline the expectations and to
detail various events taking place over
the next month. Hopefully, when the
stress levels start to return to normal,
they will have time to reflect on and
acknowledge the support of the staff
and their supportive environment at
home.
OUTWARD BOUND
On Thursday evening the
Year 9 students will return
from Outward Bound. It will
be interesting to observe the
response to parents when
the students arrive home.
Without doubt there will
be friendship, experiences
and stories that they will
carry with them through
life and share on social
occasions and informally for
decades to come. Many students of this
generation don’t have the exposure to
the elements that were commonplace
in the past. One can only imagine the
craving for technology that will have
built up by the rest day on Friday!
Please try and talk to your son and
daughter about their experience in
the coming weeks as they process the
shock of being away for so long in a
remote outdoor setting. It is important
that we do listen and engage in these
reflections. It is very formative and
therapeutic for the students - and
probably pretty funny in parts.
Thank you to all of the parents who
supported the program; some Mums
and Dads looked a little tense when
their children departed. Thank you to
the staff who spent countless hours
organising and preparing for the trips
and thank you to the staff that went
with the students. These relationships
will live on forever. There are few
schools that commit to an event of this
magnitude anymore, and it continues
to be one of the highlights of every
student’s Catholic College Bendigo
experience.
CHALLENGES
In every secondary setting there are
challenges around the measures taken
in order to prompt or cajole students
to attend events or participate in
activities. There is ample evidence
that validates challenging and at
times confronting students so they are
extending themselves and learning that
it is normal to feel nervous and anxious
about the unknown.

From our Principal, continued.
Whether it be abseiling, public speaking or being
placed with other students they don’t know, building
resilience and initiative in young people is critical to
their socialisation at this formative stage of their life. We
want our students to participate, represent the College
and attend the various co-curricular programs which
are all fundamental to growth. They offer students the
opportunity to have a go and feel the adrenalin of success
and failure. At the Mercy Day concert there were countless
performers of varying skill and experience. After every act
the audience was supportive and recognised the courage
of those who were up on stage.
DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
On the development front, there is some good news. The
Marian Centre now has cooling and heating, in good time
for the end-of-year exams and Presentation Evening. The
quadrangle at La Valla is progressing well and the design
for the View St/Barkly St corner where the Ursula Frayne
building currently stands is close to complete following
hours of consultation with the staff and domains involved
at the site. The intention through summer is to start
infrastructure works for the bottom ovals at La Valla. The
City of Greater Bendigo is supporting the infrastructure
planning. Consultation is also commencing for new general
learning classrooms at La Valla to replace the portables.
PARENT FEEDBACK
During this term, the College will be offering an
information and feedback evening, details will be included
in the next newsletter. We would like interested parents
to discuss a range of matters related to the planning for
2016, such as the new learning and teaching structure.
The College is seeking feedback from Year 7 parents
around the Maths Pathways program; also about
Information and Communications Technology (ICT), the
new building master plans for Coolock and La Valla and the
College uniform. This feedback will be really important in
shaping our planning and communicating the direction for
next year and beyond.
RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE
Through the last holidays and over the coming months
we have students representing the state and nation
in various sports and also hoping to be drafted. They
deserve recognition for their excellence and developing
the virtues to succeed. If you wish to advise us about a
student’s achievement, please email [email protected].

FROM OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM
Coolock News
Year 12
We are very quickly approaching a
significant time in the life of our Year
12 students. Next Friday, 23 October
is their final day of formal classes.
The Whole College Assembly will be
at 11.00am on this day. Parents are
welcome to join us for this assembly
which will run for about an hour. If you
wish to attend please be seated in the Marian Gym by
10.50am. At this assembly we will also formally announce
the Student Leadership positions for 2016. By now all
families with a child in Year 12 should have received a
letter from our Principal outlining our expectations during
the coming week. I would encourage families to have a
conversation about the details in this letter. All Year 12
students have been told about the way in which we want
them to conclude their time with our College and our hope
that this is a positive time for all of us. The Graduation
Mass will be in the Cathedral at 7.00pm on Friday 23
October.
Whilst formal classes for Year 12 students conclude on
Friday 23 October, students are free to attend school
during the exam period. Teachers will be available for the
Year 12 students during their normal class time. We would
encourage students to take the opportunity to continue to
liaise with their subject teachers during this time.
Additional Classes in Holidays
As most Year 12 parents would be aware, during the
holidays staff ran classes and revision sessions for
students across most subject areas. We were pleased
with the number of students who took the time in the first
week of the holidays to attend these classes. Thank you to
the staff who gave up part of their holidays to run these
sessions.

It was lovely to be able to return to work
at the beginning of Term 4 following
surgery on my shoulder. I would like to
thank Mr Len Watson in particular for
his great work in my absence and all the
others who supported him leading the La
Valla site during my time away.
Staffing changes
The beginning of fourth term has been
a smooth one and we welcome Ms Rose Moylan to
our staff, who along with Mrs Anne-Marie Holden, is
replacing Ms Kim O’Brien during this term.
Outward Bound
As I write this newsletter, the Year 9s are now fully
immersed in their Outward Bound experience and reports I
have received so far have been very positive. The weather
too has been fairly kind, which always helps with the
experience.
Quadrangle Refurbishment
It was great to see that construction work on the
quadrangle renewal had progressed by the time I returned.
We are now getting a sense of what the refurbishment and
in particular the new soundshell/covered area will bring to
our College community in the future.
Entering the College
People will now be aware that the front of the school is
not accessible during the day with the installation of the
new boom gates. As a consequence visitors to the College
must enter through Gate 3 and use the car park provided.

Community Generosity
Special thanks to all the local businesses
and members of our community who
donated sponsorship money and prizes
for the Golf Day which was scheduled
for last Sunday. Their generosity means
that a considerable amount of money
has been donated to Mercy Works. In
addition to sponsorship, prizes were
donated for a raffle which will run throughout the term.
Tickets will be available from the office at both La Valla and
Coolock for $1 per ticket. There are many great prizes to
be won. Posters promoting the prizes and acknowledging
the businesses have been placed around the school.
Graduation Mass
Year 12 students and their families will be looking forward
to the significant celebration of Graduation Mass. This
year’s Mass will take place at the Sacred Heart Cathedral
on Friday 23 October. Students will commence their
procession into the Cathedral at 6.45pm and guests are
asked to be seated by this time. Students are asked to
meet at the side of the Cathedral at 5.15 to collect gowns
and prepare for the group photo, which will be taken on
the steps of the Cathedral at 6.00pm. It is expected that
all students will be present for this photo.
Religious Art Awards
Catholic College Bendigo has a proud tradition of
celebrating and expressing our faith in creative and
life-giving ways. In 2015, we would again like to inspire
our community by selecting a special piece of work for
permanent placement in a prominent position within our
College. This year’s College theme is, ‘Vision of Mercy,
Courage of Catherine'. We invite any member of our
College community to enter their work. Entrants are
invited to speak with Mrs Trish Schofield, Mrs Louise
Richardson or Mr Peter Hughes about the design brief.
Further assistance will also be provided via conversation
with our Arts and Religious Education teachers.
Submission Date: Friday 23 October to the General
Office at either site. The award will be announced and
presented on Thursday, 29 October at our Spring Arts
Festival Visual Arts Exhibition in the Champagnat Arts
Building at 6.00pm.

Cebu Early-Career Teachers
Immersion
I was one of twelve teachers from the Diocese of
Sandhurst to attend this year’s Social Justice Immersion
for early-career teachers in Cebu, The Philippines.
Previous participants had told us how “lucky” we were
to be involved in such a trip and that it would be a “life
changing” experience. Life changing? What were we
getting into?
I really was unsure as to what to expect in Cebu. There
are the postcard-pretty images we are familiar with:
aquamarine waters, lush rainforests, and blindingly white,
sandy beaches. However, there is a side to Cebu that has a
larger impact on a visitor, and that is the level poverty that
consumes the island province.
Over eight days, our group of teachers travelled by
local transport, the “Jeepney”, to various schools and
communities around Cebu City. We experienced the depths
of poverty in the Umapad dumpsite community. We saw
hope in the relocated families of the Compostella and San
Pio villages. We laughed, sang, and shared with the boys
at the Children in Conflict With the Law Rehabilitation
Centre. We cuddled, played with, and fed the babies and
children of the Missionary of Charity Home for Sick and
Malnourished Children. We cooked for and learned with the
young and elderly at Balay Samaritano drop-in centre.
Ultimately, our eyes and hearts have been opened. We
take comfort in seeing first-hand the contribution of
Sandhurst donations towards the development of Cebuano
communities in need. The residents proudly point out to
us “Sandhurst paid for that roof!” “Sandhurst paid for
the audio system in our Church!” “Sandhurst paid for the
shelving in our in our co-op!” “Sandhurst is helping the
Live the Good News | Edition 16 | 15 October 2015 | Page 4 I will never forget the smiling faces of the Cebu locals.
Amidst the deepest adversity, they find a way to keep
smiling and laughing and making the most of what they
have. It is this optimism that I have brought back home
with me and I look forward to sharing my experiences and
what I have learned with my students.

“Where did you meet the face of Jesus today?” was a
question that we often reflected upon while in Cebu,
Philippines. As participants in the tenth Early Career
Teachers Social Justice Immersion Program from the
Diocese of Sandhurst we were privileged to meet with
several communities in Cebu and to see the hope given
to children, families and communities through the work
of organisations such as JPIC - Justice, Peace and the
Integrity of Creation and the University of San Carlos.
We met the face of Jesus in the Priests and social workers
who are assisting the poor. We met the face of Jesus in
the Sisters of Missionaries of Charity Home for Sick and
Malnourished Children. We met the face of Jesus in the
hope and pride in communities that had once lived at
rubbish dumps, but who now live in safe, peaceful villages
that they helped to build.
We went to Cebu to immerse ourselves in their culture for
a while, to try to give support and help to those in most
need, however, I came away with much more than I left
there. Even though many of the people we met lived in
absolute material poverty, their kindness and welcome
showed me the face of Jesus and has enriched my soul.

The spirit of Catherine was alive at La Valla on Mercy
Day, the last day of Term 3. Special guests included local
Sisters of Mercy, Mr Eugene Lynch from Mercy Education
and many parents. The Mercy Day liturgy provided the
opportunity to reflect on Catherine McAuley’s influence
on the history of Catholic College Bendigo through the
lasting work of the Sisters of Mercy and the inspiration this
provides each day for us in our community. The student
leadership team lead the liturgy providing everyday
examples of how we should implement the Mercy Values
and how important they are to us as a focal point for all
we do.
The La Valla and Coolock leaders provided the
entertainment with the La Valla leaders creating the very
entertaining 'ad. breaks'. The X Factor performance from
the Barkly Bellas and the Wright Street Boys was very
competitive and entertaining; to be finished off with our
very own X Factor competitor in Fr Rob, showing them
exactly how it is done!

the climbing wall all provided the opportunity for
students to have fun and enjoy the afternoon. An
incredible amount of talent was on show in what
we know as 'Rock in the Quad', out the front of
the school, which provided the opportunity for the
students to sit, relax and enjoy the talents of many
in our own community.
Much variety in food stalls was available as well as
numerous mission marts and activities, encouraging
students to spend their money and raise funds for
Mercy Works.

LEARNING & TEACHING
On 11 September, nineteen students from Catholic College
Bendigo and twenty from Girton Grammar embarked on
the trip of a lifetime to the USA! The first week was in
Huntsville, Alabama where we participated in Space Camp
or Aviation Challenge. It was a great week involving heaps
of activities including; space shuttle and F/A 18 flight
simulations, Extended Duration Missions, Night Ops and
heaps more. After graduation from Space Camp, it was off
to Orlando where we did Disney World, the Kennedy Space
Centre and Universal Studios which had Harry Potter
World. Next stop was in San Diego for Sea Camp where
we did snorkelling, labs and boogie boarding. The last few
days were in LA where we were at NASA’s Jet Propulsion
Lab on the day water was discovered on Mars, as well
as a tour of Hollywood, iFLY, Warner Bros and Universal
Studios. Space Camp was the most unforgettable, jam
packed week of my life, I have gained so much experience
and loved every second of it!
National Health and Physical Education Day 2015 was
celebrated with gusto at La Valla on Tuesday 8 September.
Our wonderful Health and PE staff delivered a plethora
of activities aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle choices
and fun activities to improve physical, mental and social
health. Activities this year included lunchtime clinics and
games of AFL 9’s, Ultimate Frisbee, Futsal, Lacrosse and
Korfball. A healthy-eating activity to investigate how
students can incorporate healthy choices into their daily
diet instead of eating packaged snacks that are highly
processed and high in sugar was conducted also. Students
who took part in this activity made delicious fruit and
waffle cones topped with natural yoghurt and toasted
muesli. Finally, the 2014 film That Sugar Film was shown
on the big screen to highlight
the risks associated with a
highly processed food diet.

Australian Defence Force
Women in Defence
Last Friday we had the opportunity to participate in the
Women in the Defence Force one-day program at Bendigo
Senior Secondary College. The day started off with an
introduction about the Australian Defence Force and what
they have to offer. We then did an activity in two teams
where we had to pour water into another bucket without
touching the water. The losing group then had to do push
ups.
Afterwards we got to try on real Army, Navy and Air Force
uniforms that the recruiting team had brought along. We
then had a surprise with an Army vehicle turning up that
we could sit in. We also had to undertake a mock fitness
test which showed us the requirements we had to pass if
we were to enrol in the Defence Force. They also taught us
how to act in an interview and what to do and what not to
do.
At the end of the day we were rewarded with gift bags and
certificate of attendance awards. Tia Needs received the
Student of Merit award, which went to the student who
showed a positive attitude and great leadership throughout
the day. It was an amazing experience that was a lot of
fun and we made some new friends too.

Sleep
Koori Football and Netball Carnival
Sleep is an essential part of good health - poor sleep can
impact you physically and mentally. If you feel like your
(or your child’s) sleep is not in a good pattern consider
some of the below tips. Improved sleep will not happen
as soon as changes are made, however if good habits are
maintained it should get better. If you try everything and
your sleep still doesn’t improve, see your GP.
The Koori Football and Netball Carnival will be held
at Epsom-Huntly Reserve on 17-18 October and is
expected to attract 5000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander community members, with over twenty-five
teams participating. The carnival aims to promote
issues such as active lifestyles, getting involved in
sport, healthy eating and leadership. http://www.

• Some people lie awake in bed at night and can't switch
of their thoughts. Keep the hour before bed as your
wind down time – develop a routine that prepares your
body and mind for sleep. Listen to quiet music or do
relaxation. Check out smilingmind.com.au for guided
meditations for all ages.
• Avoid napping during the day
• Sleep isn't something you can force. If you aren’t
asleep within 20 - 30 minutes of going to bed you
should get up. Go to another room and sit quietly;
don’t watch TV, use a computer, eat, drink or do
chores. When you feel tired again go back to bed. This
helps your mind link bed with sleep – not with being
unhappy and restless. Don't look at the clock because
no matter what time it is you will have an emotional
reaction.
• Get active every day. As a rule, exercise is good for
sleep, but not right before going to bed. Being out
in the sun during the day will help with your body
clock and the melatonin levels in the body, which will
improve sleep at night.
• Try not to have technology near your bed. If it has to
be in your room, put your phone on sleep so texts and
notifications don’t disturb you. If you use technology
in your room the brain will no longer link the bed
with sleep, so try to reduce using technology in your
bedroom.
• Get up at the same time each morning. A good routine
can be very useful in resetting your body clock.
• Avoid caffeine or alcohol late in the afternoon
Also know that it's possible you may actually be getting
more sleep than you think you are, so try not to panic.

St Vincent's Reunion
Over 70 past students of St Vincent’s
College returned to their old school on
Sunday to celebrate sixty years since the
foundation of the College. When the doors
first opened in February 1955, forty-three
boys from places such as Chinkapook,
Manangatang, Barooga and Wanalta came
to board at St Vincent’s College. For the
next twenty-two years, the school was
home to over 1200 boys. Last weekend,
among the group were fourteen of the
original class who enjoyed a formal dinner
followed by Mass at Kilian’s Church. Their
former chapel, now the library at La Valla
hosted a display of memorabilia and
morning tea. Thank you

weekend for the past

Year 9 Theatre Studies students
prepare for the final weeks of
class production. They have been
preparing to present, Blackadder
Goes Forth: Goodbyeee!, which
is about life and death in the
trenches in France during WWI.
Originally aired on the BBC and
written by Ben Elton and Richard
Curtis, students will be presenting
an edited script for the stage
demonstrating their skills in
acting but also in other areas of
stagecraft.
Theatre Studies is an elective
where students develop skills and
knowledge of all aspects to do with
a performance. They study and analyse
the script understanding the themes, the
contexts of history, society and culture
and to gain an understanding of another
time and place. Students then choose
an area they would like to work in on
the production which includes acting, set

design, props, costumes, makeup, sound,
publicity, stage management and use their
developed knowledge in interpreting the
script onto the stage for an audience.
These students are moving into the
final week of the rehearsals and
will move into the final step of the

dress and technical rehearsals before
the final performance.

Youth Soccer Champions
Jesse Matthews MY3 and Flynn Perez MK3 were
selected to represent the Under 14 Victorian Country
Squad and both flew to Coffs Harbour NSW in the second
week of the school holidays to compete in the 2015
National Youth Soccer Championships. This competition
is made up of the best players from around the country.
The boys had a brilliant week with fantastic weather as a
bonus.
Congratulations on a fantastic effort boys, and good luck
with your future tournaments.

Athletics Wow, what a stunning day. As the weather turned it on,
so did our Athletics Team. A few injuries, Outward Bound
and withdrawals prior to the day reduced our team to just
fifteen competitors, however they were all quality.

Our bowlers did the job with the ball keeping a tight line
and length but couldn’t get an early breakthrough. It
wasn’t until Liam Nihill CH1 came on with the ball that
wickets started to tumble as he got 3 wickets in one over.
Marist’s innings came to a close with the total edging over
50 with the last wicket falling with one ball to go.
Our batting started slowly with very few batters able to
get any runs on the board. Early wickets were falling
everywhere, with our boys sitting at 7/40 with 4 overs
to go. Some late big hitting from Nathan Walker BK2
wasn’t quite enough as we fell 7 runs short of the end
total.
The entire team played with excellent spirit and
sportsmanship throughout the day and should be
congratulated representing our College so well.

Our first game was against Marist College Bendigo with
the boys keen to get a win to advance to the Grand Final.
Cooper Smith JR2 and Noah Walsh CH2 starred with
the bat putting on an 80-run opening stand. Nicholas
Wallace MK2 came in and finished off the innings with
a further 40 runs with some big hitting to finish our total
over 130 runs off 18 overs.
Our second game was the final against Bendigo South
East College (BSE). After Captain Walsh lost the toss we
were asked to bowl. We started off very well but midway
through the innings BSE were piling on the runs as our
boys tried hard. Cooper Smith came on with his leg spin
and bowled a double-wicket maiden to stem the flow,
however the BSE batsmen got over the line with 73 runs
off 18 overs.
Right from the first event, the Catholic College Bendigo
Squad was on fire. This great form continued all day, and
all the students are to be commended for their terrific
effort, competitiveness and sportsmanship.

On Friday 23 October, the day of
the Graduation Mass, a group photo
will be taken on the steps of Sacred
Heart Cathedral. It will be possible

Schoolies Trivia night, test your
knowledge and help raise money to
be taken to the Philippines as part of
the Alternative Schoolies program.
Alternative Schoolies gives Year 12s
the opportunity to celebrate the end
of their schooling in a different way.
Instead of taking part in the traditional
festivities nine students from the
Sandhurst Diocese will be heading to
Cebu, where we will be immersed in
the Filipino culture for twelve days. It
will give us the opportunity to observe
experience a different way of life, as
we will be visiting areas where people
have been affected by and are living
in poverty. All the money raised will
be taken with us and donated to
organisations that are the most in
need, such as:
• Missionaries of Charity; an
orphanage for babies and children
that cannot be supported by their
families
• Balay Samaritano; a day care centre
for homeless adults and street kids
• My Home; a detention centre for
children in conflict with the law
It will be a great night and I hope to

The Zodiacs Netball Club affiliated with
Bendigo Strathdale Netball Association
(plays at Bendigo South East) will hold
their tryouts for their Under 13’s (Year
7 in 2016) and Grade 6 (in 2016) teams
for Season 2016 on the following dates:
Sunday 18 October
Grade 6 – 10.30am – 11.30am
Under 13’s – 11.30am – 12.30pm
Monday 19 October
Grade 6 – 4.30pm – 5.15pm
Under 13’s – 5.15pm – 6.15pm
Attendance at both sessions is
preferred. Please arrive ten minutes
prior to register your details.
Eaglehawk Netball
Tryouts
Eaglehawk Football/Netball Club
17&under and Development netball
tryouts will be held Monday 26
October, Friday 30 October and
Sunday 1 November from 6.00pm
– 7.30pm at the Eaglehawk netball
courts, Simpsons Rd, Eaglehawk.
