YMCA of Northwest Florida ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15
YMCA of Northwest Florida
ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15
A MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP
THIS IS OUR Y.
The Y is a powerful
association of men,
women and children of all
ages and from all walks of
life joined together by a
shared passion: to
strengthen the community
for everyone.

Another year has flown by, filled with people, programs and possibilities. With
the groundbreaking on our state-of-the-art downtown facility, we are ushering in
a new era in our association’s rich history. It’s a perfect time to reflect on the
past year and the accomplishments, opportunities, and challenges that lie ahead.
As of this report, we are at about 80% of our goal to raise the $16 million needed
to bring The Bear l Levin l Studer YMCA to life. Thanks to the spectacular generosity of these three local families, along with strong leadership gifts from other
local champions, we have broken ground on the new 52,000-square-foot facility.
The combined efforts of our Campaign Ambassadors, Board of Directors, donors,
staff, and members, have brought us to this point. It has been humbling to witness the time, talent and treasure that so many have given to our Y over the
past year.
Jon
Kagan,
Board Chair
Although the new downtown facility has taken center stage, I want to highlight
some of the great things that have taken place across the association as a whole:





Michael
Bodenhausen,
CEO
OUR MISSION
To put Christian principles into practice
through programs that build
healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Overall membership and program participation are at record highs.
We have continued our commitment to serve all who knock on our doors, giving $314,567 in direct Y Assistance to those who might otherwise be unable
to benefit from the Y experience. Loyal donors and grant funders have made
this level of support possible. See a complete listing of annual donors in subsequent pages of this report.
To meet the ongoing needs of the massively successful Betty J. Pullum Family
YMCA, we launched an expansion project that will bring a new building to
house the ever-growing youth programs.
Youth development remains paramount, as seen through our after-school and
summer day camp programs in both counties. Our commitment to serving
children of all abilities has deepened in this, our third year, of collaboration
with the National Inclusion Project.
We continued our highly successful partnership with the City of Pensacola in
the management of the Roger Scott and Hunter Pools. We brought our longstanding capabilities to these facilities, focusing on improving the safety and
efficiency at both sites.
We completely revamped our systems, processes, and staffing structures as
we prepare to expand into our new flagship facility. We launched new survey
tools for members and staff to gather the feedback needed for continuous
improvement.
As you can see, we have e a lot to be both proud of and thankful for. That said,
there’s still a great deal of heavy lifting left to be done. But I have absolutely no
doubt that the time, talent, and resources of everyone combined will get us to
the finish line.
Our Y truly belongs to you. With the entire community embracing the work
ahead, there is no question we will be successful in our mission and we will continue to serve Northwest Florida for another hundred years.
Jon Kagan
I’m CLAIRE.
And this is my Y.
As a part of the International
Baccalaureate Program at Pensacola High
School, students develop a project that
incorporates creativity, action and service.
Claire Escobedo decided to share her passion
for art with Y after-school kids and created a
year-round program she called “A Work of
HeART.” Claire
planned and
delivered a
weekly art class
to kids at the Y’s
Ferry Pass
Elementary after
-school site. As a
kid, she
participated in Y
day camp, swim
lessons and soccer. For her project, she
planned, raised funds, and taught a weekly
art activity that helped the children explore
media and express themselves. Judging from
the response of the children participating,
they definitely looked forward to their weekly
art class. Claire said the project developed
her own feelings of leadership. The idea that
some of the children might go on to do more
with art in their lives became a source of
inspiration for her.
“I chose my project because I think
everyone should have the opportunity
to express themselves through art.
Since I’ve been a part of the YMCA all
my life, it was natural to do something
through the Y.”
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
One out of 4 youth in our after-school programs
received Y Assistance so they could spend their
weekday afternoons in a safe, enriching environment.
Our summer day camps operated at capacity,
reaching nearly 700 kids who kept their bodies
and minds active over the summer.
Through partnership with the National Inclusion Project and
Autism Pensacola, we welcomed children with disabilities into
child care and camp at Northeast and Pullum.
More than 1,300 children participated in swim lessons, where
they learned lifelong skills and reduced the likelihood of
drowning in a community surrounded by water.
Every child in the Pullum Branch VPK program tested above
the state readiness average for children entering
kindergarten.
More than 1,700 children learned teamwork and good sportsmanship while staying physically active in youth sports programs.
We reached 4,771 children through before- and
after-school programs, summer camp, sports
and aquatics— programs that also build selfconfidence and instill values.
I’m DAN.
And this is my Y.
In 2014, Dan Lindemann
transformed himself.
Previously a selfproclaimed “physical
wreck,” he now defies his
age with a strength and
energy that is enviable.
His secret? Cleaning up his
lifestyle and serious
strength training at the
Downtown Y. A former
athlete and flight
instructor, he became
sedentary, got injured and
neglected his health over
the years. Add to that a more than 30-year habit
of smoking at least a pack a day, and Dan was in
bad shape. He gave up the cigarettes at the
urging of 5-year-old grandson, Cooper. Next
came his introduction to Olympic weight training
with other members in the “Dungeon” – the
basement of the Y. Dan quickly got hooked and
never missed a day of workouts. In just 60 days,
he gained 20 pounds of muscle. After nearly five
months of training, that was up to 30 pounds.
He’s also measuring 1 ½ inches taller, which he
attributes to better posture. And he’s bench
pressing 225 pounds. Now he challenges others,
telling them that just three hours a week will pay
unbelievable dividends.
“It’s amazing that I’m over 60
and I’ve made this kind of transformation this quickly. I’m living
proof that you can change with
effort—a change that will last
for years.”
HEALTHY LIVING
More than 8,000 members enjoyed the
opportunity to stay healthy and strong while
building friendship and community.
We gave away $119,792 in Y Assistance in
membership—serving 782 people—as part
of our commitment that every body should
have the opportunity to be part of the Y.
About 20% of our members are age 60 or older.
For many, the Y is a chance to stay physically
active and socially connected through our
Senior Program.
Members challenged themselves and encouraged each other
through our Body Challenge, Running and Walking Clubs,
group fitness classes and small group training.
We hosted 32 teams from local companies in
our 21st Annual Corporate Cup Games and
reached 1,000 participants, volunteers and
friends through this workplace wellness event.
I’m JOHN.
And this is my Y.
For the Fowler family, the Child Care Program at
the Pullum Y has been a lifesaver. With the
program’s
commitment to
inclusion, their
son, John, has
found a place
where he
belongs, and in
turn, a place
where the whole
family is
enjoying better
health and a sense of community. John was
diagnosed with autism at age 3. Myra, his mom,
explains that it was difficult to find qualified
childcare to care for him. He was asked to leave
one center, which made it difficult for her to work.
But it was a different experience at the Pullum
Branch, which participates in the Let’s All Play
curriculum. The staff have special training on how
to include children with special needs in their
program. John enrolled two years ago, and Myra
has not missed a day of work from her full-time job
because of childcare issues in over two years. This
summer, John passed the youth fitness orientation
and has been able to use the exercise equipment
for the first time. He now has a healthy activity to
do with his father that benefits them both.
“John is happy and included and
loves to go to the Y. Even on
days that his daddy has off from
work, he still chooses to go to
the Y because he hates to miss
his Y time.”
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
We welcomed 300 special needs kids to
Halloween at the Y, where they enjoyed a safe
and unique trick-or-treating experience.
More than 620 donors pledged more than
$180,600 to our Annual Campaign—led by
99 Banner Donors who gave $1,000 or
more to support the Y’s mission outreach.
As part of our commitment to personal dignity
and respect, we offered 2,857 free showers to
homeless and transient individuals.
We opened our doors to anyone who needed a place to meet
and connect—churches, Bible study groups, Scout groups,
schools and other nonprofits.
We provided a way for our members and friends
to give back, as 416 people gave volunteer time
valued at more than $141,000 to our
organization.
We could not achieve our mission without the committed support of our
donors, whose gifts make our work possible. We are especially honored to
recognize members of our Banner Circle whose gifts of $1,000 or more to
our Annual Campaign make a vital difference in the lives of those we serve.
Our Gold Banner donors contribute $2,500 or more annually.
