Speaker: Dr. Khoo Kay Yong BSc. (Malaya); MScITE(HKU); EdD(HKU).
Dr. Khoo is the course director of MELS digital learning programme.
He has been involved in kindergarten teachers training for more
than 13 years in Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. During these years,
he has conducted more than 350 training sessions for kindergarten
teachers in teaching pedagogy (in the areas of Languages, Science
and Technology, Motor Skills, Moral and Living Skills, Creativity and Art
and Mathematics), learning theories and digital tool applications in classroom and

The training will include three main topics, Science, Mathematics and Moral Values for
preschool teachers. These three topics can be integrated into stories.

For each topic, the trainer will introduce the core ideas of why the topic is
essential to nurturing children of a young age and the important areas within the
subjects to cover in preschool education. Subsequently, the trainer will demonstrate
the teaching ideas and the rationale behind each idea. The training is designed for
kindergarten principals and teachers to obtain ideas for teaching. It is brief, relevant
and to the point. To gain moral awareness, it is important to deliver the message in
engaging stories and subsequently to show real cases that are well known or common.
For mathematics learning, it is not enough to just teach children to gain the skills of
calculation and number manipulations. The mathematical thinking has to develop
within the children at the same time. In our everyday lives we encounter science. If we
introduce early science awareness to young children (for example, nature, animals and
plants), they will be able to turn most of what they encounter everyday into knowledge.
It is important to apply the ideas of authentic activities in these areas (i.e.
Mathematics, Science and Moral) to engage children’s interest and subsequently to
promote peer learning in the classroom.
