GREETINGS FROM THE ‘EDITOR’
Hi you all, it is I, your editor, sitting at the computer, searching for new words to say Hello,
how is it going, what’s happening, Alas, I am at a loss; I can tell you the property looks great,
we are blooming all over the place, the lake is full thanks to abundance of rain, it’s a touch
quiet, but that gives those of us who call PDW home a chance to chill out. I keep hoping that
my email will be overflowing with pictures and notes of what you are all doing. Family
pictures, vacation pictures, wedding pictures, graduation pictures, sitting on the porch
pictures. But, it is not happening. But I have not given up, I believe, or as Martin Luther King
said – I have a dream – and I do believe that the floodgates will open and pictures and emails
will be flowing in. Remember sharing is caring. So send; surprise me and send to
[email protected] and share the joy.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
With the summer upon us, our minds and bodies now focus on dealing with the joys
of summer. Some facts you might not be aware of regarding this time of year: a) The
“dog days” of summer are weeks between July 3rd and Aug.1st, named after the Dog
Star (Sirius) in the constellation of Canis Majer; b) Count a cricket's chirps for 15 sec.
and if you add 37 to it, you will have the approximate outdoor temperature in Fahrenheit
degrees; c) More than 74 Million people will have a July 4th cookout; d) Over $211 Million is
spent each year on fireworks. Regarding some of the joys of summer, did you know that we
consume individually an average of 5.5 gals of ice cream per year, particularly during the
summer months; also more ice cream is consumed in the month of July than any other month.
Home-made banana splits are a favorite of mine so I guess I'm contributing my fair share. Then
there's watermelon, a favorite fruit of the summer (actually a vegetable) which is a member of
the cucumber, squash and pumpkin family. It is composed of 92% water and consumed by
each of us at an average of over 15lbs per year. What is a cookout without watermelon?
Finally, summer is the season when a man thinks he cooks better on an outdoor grill than his
wife can on an indoor stove. And don't forget – summer is like a one-night stand – hot as hell,
totally thrilling and gone before you know it. Enjoy these days of summer while you can!

AUGUST POETRY PAGE
Did you know that August is National Golf Month and so,
OUR ODE TO GOLF - Allan Berman
In my hand I hold a ball,
White and dimpled, rather small.
Oh, how bland it does appear,
The harmless looking little sphere.
By its size I could not guess,
The awesome strength it does possess.
But since I fell beneath its spell,
I’ve wandered through the fires of hell.
My life has not been quite the same,
Since, I chose to play this stupid game.
It rules my mind for hours on end,
A fortune it has made me spend.
It has made me yell, curse and cry,
I hate myself and want to die.
It promises a thing called par,
If I can hit it straight and far.
To master such a tiny ball,
Should not be very hard at all.
Buy my desire, the ball refuses,
And does exactly as it chooses.
It hooks and slices, dribbles and dies,
And even disappears before my eyes.
Often it will have a whim,
To hit a tree or take a swim.
With miles of grass on which to land,
It finds a tiny patch of sand.
Then has me offering up my soul,
If only it would find the hole.
It made me whimper like a pup,
And swear that I will give it up,
And take to drink to ease my sorrow,
But the ball knows…I’ll be back
Tomorrow
And did you not know that August is also Peach Month – so hail to the Peach that fuzzy little fruit.
PEACHES – by Hattie Howard
Who is wise would rather tramp
Weary miles than eat of these:
Colic, cholera, and cramp
Lurks beneath their indices.
What are peaches minus cream,
Just enough to smother in?
Till the juicy quarters seem
Buried isle of coralline.
Tender freestones, mellow clings,
Nectarines without a scar …
Everyone a picture brings
Of redundant groves afar,
Where the languid natives lie
Under peach-trees day by day,
Visage looking to the sky …
Picking peaches? …No! not they!
Waiting for the fruit to drop
In each facial orifice!
Surely, plan for gathering crop
Never labor save as this.
Peaches, Peaches everywhere
Trains are carrying thick and fast!
Luxuries that all may share
Ere “peach-season” shall have passed.
WORDS OF WISDOM
In the blink of an eye,
Everything can change,
So forgive often and love with all your heart,
You many never have that change again.
we are happy to say
that at PDW we’re bloomin’ away
in red, yellow, blue and white
Oh My! Is this not a sight
