Beating the
Winter time Blues
By February or March, most people have had enough
of winter. As the cold weather and dark evenings
hang on, people start checking their calendars and
counting the days until spring.
No one knows this better than Brian Buresh, owner of
Buresh Home Solutions, and his crew. Throughout the
coldest, snowiest days of winter they persevered and
replaced all the siding on the Ronald McDonald
House. They also installed the following; house wrap,
custom bent exterior sheet metal in white and red,
custom bent sheet metal on the sign located on the
east side of the building (will also replace our logo on
this sign), solid and vented soffit panels on all overhangs, seamless gutters and downspouts on the
house and garage, commercial steel standing seam
roofing over the front entry, replaced rotten wood,
new entry door on the garage and installed siding on
areas of the House that previously had none.
When Brian first looked at the House and listened to
what we wanted to accomplish, you could see the
wheels turning. His knowledge of construction
materials is endless. He had a mission to help us
lower our energy bills, minimize exterior maintenance
and increase visibility of the house to people passing
by. But more importantly, he wanted to help us
provide a warm, beautiful and comfortable home
for the families that stay here.
Brian began contacting his suppliers, asking what
they could do to help the Ronald McDonald House.
By the time he was done he had commitments from
numerous businesses to either donate material or
pass on a tremendous savings. These businesses
include: R&R Building Products, Exterior Sheet
Metal, Eagle Seamless Gutter, Brian Robben
(Robben Home Improvement), Allied Building
Products, Duke Aerial Equipment, Signs Now and of
course, Buresh Home Solutions.
We can’t thank Brian, his foreman Dustin Cozad and
the rest of the crew enough. Their professionalism,
unsurpassed customer service and genuine interest in
a job well done is very much appreciated. Their hard
work and great ideas truly help make this ‘A Home
Away From Home’ for the families that stay here.
Buresh Home Solutions is committed to premier
customer service — we have experienced this first
hand and we call it “The Buresh Way!”
Congratulations to Jim Pech and
David Hartman
At the January 11, 2008 Board of Directors meeting, the gavel was
passed from current President Tom Campbell to Jim Pech. Jim will
begin his two year term as the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House
Board President. He joined the board of directors in January, 2000
and has been very active on all of the House committees. He not only
has brought his ideas and his true desire to help his community, Jim
has also recruited many outstanding and enthusiastic volunteers and
board members.
Jim Pech
Board President
At the January 11, 2008 Board of Directors meeting, David Hartman
was voted as President-Elect of the Des Moines Ronald McDonald
House. David has been the chair of our golf outing event since
his nomination to the board of directors in January, 1999. David
not only chaired this committee but has served on other House
committees as well.
Both Jim and David have a true desire to help the House in every way.
Not only do they both recruit their families to staff the House during
the holidays, they both have prepared meals for the families. David
has a set date each month that he and a group of his friends bring a
dinner for the families.

Matt was voted to the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House Board of
Directors at the January 11, 2008 board meeting. Matt works at EMC
Risk Services as a Liability Supervisor. He is a member of the Central
Iowa Claims Association and the Senior Claims Law Association. He is

charge of volunteers at the “We Run after 9-1-1”. He has been an
active volunteer at various events around Des Moines such as; Principal
Charity Classic, Des Moines Marathon, Winefest, March of Dimes and
many others. Matt, on behalf of the Ronald McDonald House Staff,
Board of Directors but more importantly the over 300 families that stay
here each year, welcome and thank you for helping us to make this a
“Home-Away-From-Home” for families with seriously-ill children in
area hospitals.
Fall Gala
Des Moines Ronald McDonald House held its 8th annual
“A Grand Affair” event on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at the
Hy-Vee Convention Center in West Des Moines. Approximately
290 guests attended this gala event. The evening began
with a social hour followed by an elegant sit-down
dinner. During the course of the evening the guests
had the opportunity to bid on more than 100 silent
auction packages and finished the evening with
dancing to local, well-known band Del “Saxman” Jones
and Final Mix.
The highlight of the evening was the Grant family,
special guests who are currently using the Des Moines
House as their 4-year-old son Tyler undergoes regular
chemotherapy treatments. Tyler was diagnosed with leukemia in
May 2006 at Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines. The Grant family
has come to love and appreciate the home they have come to know in the
Ronald McDonald House. Their testimony touched the heart of the attendees
as they shared their story.
We hope you will plan to attend the next Fall Gala event on
Saturday, October, 11, 2008 at the Meadows Convention Center in Altoona.

What if the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House
earned a penny every time you searched the
Internet? Or how about if a percentage of every
purchase you made online went to support our
cause? Well, now it can!
GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search
engine that donates half its advertising revenue,
about a penny per search, to the charities its users
designate. Use it just as you would any search
engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and
watch the donations add up!
GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which
donates up to 37 percent of each purchase to your
favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including
Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy's and
Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and
every time you place an order, you’ll be supporting your
favorite cause.

LOVE LETTERS
Ronald McDonald House,
We really appreciated your hospitality and service you provided for us while our boys were in
the hospital! Thanks for the food, groceries,
Callahn and C
ahde
phone card, blankets and stuffed animals you
gave us when we left! We were so thankful you guys were there.
Now the boys are two months and doing great! Thanks bunches and God bless!
Sincerely, Chris, Hannah, Callahn and Cahde Querrey
Dear Ronald McDonald House,
Brenda, Florence, Denise, Tiffany and
the rest of the team,
I just wanted to thank you all from the
bottom of my heart. You guys have
helped me so much through the last two
months, and you probably don’t realize
how much you have done. It’s gonna’ be
hard to leave — I have gotten so close to
you all! You are all
true angels and deserve the utmost
respect.
Thank you all!
We will miss you.

Ronald McDonald House Staff,
‘Thank you’ really doesn’t say
enough for all you did for me and
my family. We appreciate everything. You all made a difficult time
much easier to manage. Our little
Mallory, who weighed 2lbs 8oz, is
now a happy, healthy 11 month
old weighing in at 18 ½ lbs. I
especially would like to thank
Florence for always being there to
lend an ear.
Thank you, Katie Fowler

We just want to say hi and thank you for letting us stay with you while our twins
were in the hospital. You made our stay feel
like home for the 50 days that we were there.
It was also nice to be able to have Peterson
stay with me for a week until his sister got
out of the hospital. They are both doing well
and are getting into everything. They are
starting to walk and it won’t be long before
they are walking on their own. It doesn’t
seem like they should be a year old January
19th. Thank you very much Florence and

I hope we can make it up to visit in person sometime.
We hope everyone has a great holiday season and a happy new year.
Thanks again, April, James, Peyton and Preston Gentry
Dear Ronald McDonald Staff,
I would like to thank you for being there for my family. During Wyatt’s illness it
was comforting to know that Sue and Amanda had a home away from home. I
don’t know what we would have done without you. You are all appreciated more
than you can ever know. We have been praying day and night for Wyatt. Thank
God he answers prayers. Thank you all so much — we love you all.
Corwin and Rosemary Kelderman
My wife Meg and I, along with our children, would like to give out deepest thanks to the
Ronald McDonald House of Des Moines for the hospitality we received after the birth of
our son in late August and early September. We would also like to thank Prairie Meadows
for so generously funding our ten-day stay there.
Staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines has special meaning for me,
as I stayed there in October, 1982 with my parents after the
premature birth of my brother at Blank Children’s Hospital.
Knowing that RMH is still going strong, helping families
26 years later is very comforting and I hope that it
continues for at least another 25!
Again thank you!

We love our volunteers! There are many people who help to make
Ronald McDonald House a home away from home for families with
sick children. One group is our dedicated volunteers. They are
enthusiastic and wonderful people from all walks of life who give
of their time to help the families at Ronald McDonald House.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our terrific volunteers!
We have volunteer opportunities available in many areas for
individuals and for groups. You can volunteer one time or on a
regular basis.
• Meals: Make dinner for our families. Food can be brought in or
prepared here. It is such a relief to the families when dinner is
provided for them.
• Special events: Help in many ways with one of our fundraisers
including the Fall Gala, Run for Ronald, and the golf tournament.
• Decorate: Update one of our bedrooms by painting it a
fresh color and decorating it with bedspreads, curtains,
and accessories.
• Landscaping: Plant and water flowers around the house.
Pull weeds and trim bushes to keep the yard neat.
• Cleaning: Come on in and clean the house. This can be done
one time or once a week.
• Maintenance: Assist with ongoing maintenance such as
installing a ceiling fan, painting walls or making repairs.
For further information about these and other volunteer
opportunities, call the House at 515-243-2111. It takes many
hands to make a home away from home for the families who stay
at Ronald McDonald House. Thank you for caring!

Run For Ronald
It’s All About Family Time
Robert Harmon from Neuman Brothers, Design
Build Department contacted us wanting to donate
their time and talent building a project for the
families and kids that stay at the Des Moines
Ronald McDonald House.
May 17, 2008
Mark your calendar and plan to attend the
2008 Run for Ronald.
Saturday, May 17th at 8:00 a.m.
Where: Blank Park Zoo
Events: 10k race, 5k run/walk, kids run
For more information, check out

What they came up with is outstanding! We wanted
a secure area where parents could have access to a
treadmill and watch their children play at the same
time. Robert and his design crew created this
colorful fun interactive wall. On the toy room side
we have a magnetic board, felt board, sensory
board, playhouse and circus mirror. The parents are
able to be on the other side of this wall exercising
and watching their children play.
The Design Build staff not only designed and built
this wall, they also solicited donations to make
this addition a reality. With the help of Action
Reprographics, Architectural Arts, Baker Group,
Clark Glass, Heartland Finishes, J. Laurenzo
Specialty Products, Johnson Machine Works,
Principal Financial Group RIS Business Systems and
Walsh Door, this is truly The House That Love Built.

Pull For the Ronald McDonald House
Keep pulling those pop tabs! School, churches, businesses and
individuals continue to help the House by collecting tabs, and
taking them to the Ronald McDonald House. The proceeds from
the pop tab project are used for the operational expenses of
the House, such as utility payments, maintenance and repairs.
The pop tabs also help families who are unable to pay the $10
per night rate. These generous donations help us ensure that
the Ronald McDonald House is open to everyone…regardless
of their ability to pay.
Our heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of donors to this very
worthwhile project, benefiting the Des Moines Ronald
McDonald House resident families.
