Thank You Volunteers
Thank You From Our Executive Director
Dino Delights
With the holiday season upon us, I’m constantly thinking about how we can do more for the families that come
through our doors—especially during this time of year. It’s difficult enough for families to be away from home with a
sick child in the hospital, but this situation can be even more trying when others are purchasing gifts for loved ones,
decorating their homes, and spending time with their family and friends.
Kids at the Ronald McDonald House enjoy prehistoric
playdates, thanks to Harold and Kay Whipple, left,
from Lacona, Iowa. Harold, an expert woodworker,
makes 25 hardwood dinosaur toys each month. He
and Kay donate them to the House, as well as Mercy
Medical Center and Blank Children’s Hospital. And
these are no ordinary dinos. Thanks to a flexible
construction, the wheeled toys wiggle and swerve as
they’re pulled by a lead. Each dinosaur requires
10 hours of work and 32 pieces of hardwood, but
Harold insists the work is worth it. “Maybe the kids
get some good out of it, but we get a lot more,” he says.
At the Ronald McDonald House, we go above and beyond to help make the holidays special for our families. On
Christmas Eve, we put a large bag of donated items, which can include toys, hats, gloves, games, and gift cards, at
each bedroom door. Being able to present these goodies to families is the best kind of holiday gift-giving. Santa doesn’t
forget the House, either: He stops by on Christmas morning to bring gifts to our families. And later that day, we open
our doors to our families’ relatives so that they can enjoy a home-cooked holiday brunch and dinner with their loved
ones. None of this would be possible without our amazing volunteers,
who choose to spend Christmas cooking for families they don’t know
instead of spending time with their own.
We know that the holidays can be hectic, so if you’re unable to give
your time to the House, there are other ways to contribute.
For example, our Share a Night program allows you to cover families’
costs for each night of their stay. Although our operating costs are
approximately $90 per family per night, we suggest that families
contribute $10 toward each night of their stay—but only if they can.
And when our rooms are full, we put families on a waiting list for a
room at the House or place them at a nearby hotel. To you, $10 may
only be the price of two peppermint mocha lattes from Starbucks, but
to our families, it’s another night they can be closer to their sick child.
I, of course, hope that you’ll continue to support the House in whatever
way you can—whether that means donating your time, services, or
just a few dollars. Any contribution, no matter how big or how small,
helps families that need Ronald McDonald House more than ever
during the holidays.
Gratefully yours,
Brenda Miller

Kendall Owen joined the Ronald McDonald House staff as the new
operations manager at the end of August. Kendall joins the House
with more than 20 years of experience in the food and beverage
industry, and helps out with daily responsibilities to ensure the rest
of our staff is able to do their jobs to the fullest extent. Welcome,
Kendall! We’re so glad to have you on board.

Heart to Heart
Racing for Good
Anne Shrader had never participated in a triathlon before, but this summer
seemed like the right time. She was offered free training, and on top of that,
she’s a new mom staying home with her daughter, so she had promised
herself she would accomplish something big this year.
Participants in BMW’s Ultimate Race to Give program were tasked with
raising $1,000 for a local charity in exchange for training and triathlon gear.
Anne has volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House for four years, so
choosing which charity to raise money for was a no-brainer. “I go in once a
week, and do just about anything they need me to,” Anne says. “It’s not like a
job. You do it because you want to do it. When you show up and people are
excited to see you—it’s an awesome feeling.”
“It’s almost like we had
something to connect to,
rather than just the race.
Hopefully it makes them
think and inspires them
to check out the House.”
Anne had approximately three months to
train and raise money for the House—but
reached her fundraising goal of $1,000 in
just six days. By the time race day rolled
around on Sept. 6, Anne was in good
shape—and had collected a total of $1,450
for the House. But race day temperatures
were in the mid-90s, which made Anne,
right, reconsider wearing her striped Ronald McDonald House socks after
finishing the swim portion of the race.
During the bike ride, she spotted Lynn Bohn, family services and volunteer program manager for the House, on
the sidelines—wearing striped socks on her feet. “I couldn’t believe that she was out there supporting me in her
socks, so before I started the run, I took extra time and put mine on.” It didn’t matter that she lost an extra minute
and a half in transition. As she ran, the flashes of red and white on her legs caught the attention of other runners.
“Hey! Cool socks!” they shouted. “Ronald McDonald House!” she cheered back. The runners shared high-fives
and flashed the thumbs up, and the encouragement was just what Anne needed to finish the final leg of her first
triathlon. “It’s almost like we had something to connect to, rather than just the race,” she says. “Hopefully it makes
them think and inspires them to check out the House.”

Charity Steer Show
Sets New Record
RECAP
The Governor’s Charity Steer Show has
raised more than $2.7 million for the Ronald
McDonald House Charities of Iowa since it
began in 1983. The show and auction, which
are sponsored by Iowa Beef Industry Council
and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, set an
event record this year for the highest-selling
steer—which was purchased for $31,000—
and raised a total of $222,736 for the Ronald
McDonald Houses in Des Moines, Iowa City,
and Sioux City.
The annual event always draws a large crowd: The Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the
Iowa State Fair had standing room only on August 15. The steers were shown by local
celebrities, which included Iowa U.S. Senator Joni Ernst, Iowa U.S. Representative
David Young, Iowa State University President Steven Leath, former University of Iowa
quarterback James Vandenberg, and Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. And the day before
the show, we invited the 25 youth who raised the steers, along with their families,
above, to the House for a volunteer day and lunch with the governor, provided by the
Iowa Beef Industry Council.

Raising one of the steers for
this year’s show wasn’t the
only connection that Hayden
Watson, an 11-year-old from
Bloomfield, Iowa, had to the
Ronald McDonald House. In
2013, Hayden stayed at the
Ronald McDonald House at the
Mayo Clinic while undergoing
treatment for a rare form of nose
cancer. Today, his cancer is in
remission—and his steer, Spot,
helped raise more than $16,500
toward a good cause.
SHOOTING FOR THE SKY
A huge thank-you goes out to the volunteers,
donors, and clay-shooting teams at our 7th
Annual Sporting Clays Event. Through our sponsors,
Kids and Clays Foundation and Van Meter Inc., we
brought together passionate participants in a tournament
that showcased 125 clay shooters—a significant increase
from the 98 shooters at last year’s event. In addition to
the tournament, contributors joined in a raffle and live
auction, and viewed a video showcasing several families
that were positively impacted by donations to the Ronald
McDonald House. All told, we raised more than $40,000
to benefit our families, and we’re so grateful to everyone
who helped make this year’s tournament such a success.

BIKING FOR A
GOOD CAUSE
Thanks to approximately 150 participants and our wonderful sponsors, the fourth annual Pedal for the
House Bike Ride raised more than $10,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Iowa. We’d
also like to thank Too Cool, the band that donated its time to the event and kept everyone dancing at the
Flat Tire Lounge after the ride was over.

year’s event will open

Our Caring Community
HELPING YOUR “LOCAL” CHARITY
• For several years, Bill Bethel, owner of Rite
Way Pest Control, has provided his services for
both the inside and outside of the House—free
of charge.
We’re grateful to receive support from many different businesses and organizations around
central Iowa—and we wouldn’t be able to help as many families as we do without their
generosity and assistance.
• All American Turf Beauty, a local lawn care
service and grounds maintenance company, has
brought holiday cheer to the House for 18 years.
The company provides Christmas decorations
and lighting, sets everything up at no cost, and
stores the items once the holidays are over.
EMPLOYER VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS
• A group of employees at the Home Depot store in
Urbandale, Iowa, has helped with various projects at
the House for several years as part of the Team Depot
volunteer program. Dan Koenigsfeld, bottom right,
leads the volunteer group and loves helping the House
with whatever
we need, from
stuffing envelopes
to renovating
bedroom closets.
Dan recently
dropped by the
House to drop off
a donated freezer.
THANKING OUR NAMESAKE
McDonald’s restaurant co-op owners and operators
in central Iowa are encouraged to help the Ronald
McDonald House wherever they can. Though most
make hourly wages, employees often purchase Wish
List items and get together to make meals at the House,
above. The restaurant locations also have several
initiatives to help the House throughout the year:
• GIVING TREES: During the holiday season, small
trees with Wish List ornaments are placed in each
of the restaurants. Anyone is welcome to take
ornaments from the tree and return to the restaurant
with the items listed, which are then given to the House.
• GIVING HANDS: Around Valentine’s Day, employees
and customers can purchase paper hands for $1 or
$5, the proceeds of which are given to the House.
• PULL TAB COLLECTION: Customers and employees
can drop off pull tabs at any of the McDonald’s
restaurants in central Iowa.
• CANISTER DONATIONS: The restaurants collect
spare change at the registers and drive-through
windows, which amounted to $70,000 in total
donations to the House in 2014.
6
Heart to Heart
• Several large employers in Des Moines, including
Nationwide Insurance, above, Wells Fargo, Voya
Financial, and John Deere, provide time off for their
employees to volunteer. These volunteers choose
to give their time to the Ronald McDonald House,
where they help us with events, yard work, cleaning,
cooking, and other projects.
DEDICATED DONORS
• The Ronald McDonald House may be 120 miles
from Britt, Iowa, but we’re still considered a local
charity. Koyote Custom Finishes, a Britt-based
business, donated $1,000 from their annual Koyote
Custom Poker Run proceeds to the House at the end
of July. The event has benefited Iowa charities and
other causes since 2010. In addition to the donation,
participants and local residents filled two 55-gallon
drums with pull tabs, above, which the House sells for
scrap metal to help pay for operational costs.
• Scott and Cora Lahr were introduced to the House in
late 2012 when their young son, Emmett, was being
treated at Blank Children’s Hospital for bladder cancer.
For the last two years, the Lahr family has hosted
Ronald’s Road Rally—a bike ride that supports the
Ronald McDonald
House. The ride
started and ended in
the Lahr’s hometown
of Lake View, Iowa.
Other families who
have benefited
from the House’s
hospitality told their
stories at stops along
the Sauk Rail Trail
route. The event,
which included a
free concert, raffle
baskets, and special
appearances from
Ronald McDonald,
left, raised $4,000 for
the House in 2015.
GIVING BACK
Thanks to the support we receive from
our community, we’re able to help other
local organizations in need. ChildServe
is a nonprofit organization that helps
families with children who have special
health care needs. When families
visit their children in residential
long-term care, there is often no place
for them to sleep—so we take care
of costs associated with food. When
these families come to Des Moines, we
offer them a room at the House. We
also recently opened a pantry area at
ChildServe, above, which is stocked
weekly with personal care items,
snacks, and microwavable meals.

What’s for Dinner?
Josie Schild, a 15-year-old from Webster County, is no stranger to the
benefits of the Ronald McDonald House. Her older sister, Jaclyn, died of
leukemia at the age of 12. While Jaclyn was fighting her illness, the House
opened its doors to her family when they couldn’t travel back and forth from
Fort Dodge to Des Moines. For a 4-H service project, Josie decided to collect
pull tabs to help the organization
that supported her family during
this difficult time. She placed

locations around Fort Dodge with The Ronald McDonald House

Heart to Heart
When families come to stay at the Ronald
McDonald House, we ask them to contribute
$10 for each night of their stay—but we will
never turn away a family that can’t pay. You
can help ease the burden on our families by
covering as much or as little of their stay as
you can. Cover one night of one family’s stay
with just $10, or donate $3,650 to cover the
yearly cost of a room. These donations, which
are part of our Share a Night program, help
offset operating costs for our 12-bedroom
facility. And any amount you can give, no
matter how big or small, makes a difference.
The Des Moines Register
will donate $20 to the
Ronald McDonald House
for every new Thursday–
Sunday subscription sold.
The subscriptions start
at $1.99 per week, and
include full access to
online articles.
Interested in providing a dinner at the
House? Here’s what you need to know:
• Meals should feed around 25 people.
• We encourage cooks to be creative
with their meals: Tacos, chili, and
pasta are always popular, so try
bringing something new to the table.
• Dinner is served at 6 p.m. Volunteers
typically arrive around 4 p.m. to
prepare the meal, but you can drop off
supplies, get a slow cooker started, or
begin meal prep earlier in the day.

COOKING AT THE HOUSE
• The House keeps some staple
ingredients on hand, such as
condiments, seasonings, and baking

we have, so you don’t double up.
If you’re buying holiday gifts from Amazon this year,
consider this effortless way to help make a difference:
For every purchase made through AmazonSmile, half a
percent of the purchase price will be donated to the Ronald
McDonald House. During the time of year when we need
donations the most, each contribution helps support families
in need. Looking for another small way to make an impact?
Choose one or multiple Wish List items from a Giving Tree
(located at McDonald’s restaurants in central Iowa), purchase
them through AmazonSmile, and return to the restaurant with
the items, which directly benefit families at the House.

AMAZON PURCHASES COUNT:
Few things are more comforting than a
warm, home-cooked meal. At the Ronald

families have finished eating.
COOKING FOR THE RONALD MCDONALD FAMILY ROOM
Meals for the Family Room should feed around 15 people and be prepared at
the House or in a commercial kitchen. Because space is limited, slow cooker
meals are the best option for this location. If you’re preparing the meal at the
House, please plan to arrive before 4 p.m.
