PIC SAINT LOUP
!
culminant.

History
A family history
The same dedication has been passed down from father to son since 1920
The history of Le Clos des Augustins began in the early twentieth century
And has remained within the Mezy Family until today
Under the watchful eye of Odile, the grandmother
The management of Roger, the father
The goodwill and skills of Frédéric, the son
THE NAME
At the Mézy’s, wine is a family history transmitted from generation to generation.
The main actors in the Clos story can be traced through the generations back to Frederic, le Gamin (the Kid).
At the beginning of the twentieth century, two great-grandfathers both named Augustin, already worked the
wine on these 25 hectares of land, at the foot of the Pic Saint-Loup. It was in their memory that the domain was
named le Clos des Augustins. The Joseph vintage is also a tribute to the paternal great-grandfather Augustin,
whose second name was Joseph.
Odile, the grandmother, daughter-in-law of Joseph-Augustin also worked on the domain during her youth. Her
son Roger decided to relaunch the domain, which was abandoned during the post-war years, and revived the
family tradition.
In 2000, four hectares of vines, located in a 25 hectare tract, were entirely replanted. Ten further hectares were
reformulated and replanted. The wine storehouse was built where an old hangar once stood. One of Roger’s
sons, Frederic, began to be seriously interested in the vineyards and took up studies in oenology.
In 2005, Frederic bought six hectares in the commune of Fontanès, to which four hectares of old Syrah were
added at the foot of the Pic Saint-Loup in the commune of Saint-Mathieu de Tréviers. The history continues and
succession is assured. Today, Frederic, helped by his brother Damien and his father Roger (and still under Odile’s
close observation!) looks after the wine from the Clos. The rosé is called André, in memory of his paternal
grandfather.
The vintage Les Deux Rogers is a tribute to the friendship between the painter Roger Bonafé and Roger Mézy.

«Biodynamics» Cultivation
Since the beginning of the adventure, we are looking to take care of nature and animals.
In this way, we don’t use chemics, work the ground and treat with care.
Since 2008, to make another step in this way, we use biodynamics preparation and treat with mix of herbs to
reduce Cu and S.
We try to conserve natural balance in our wines and vineyards
Constant attention to quality
Low yields, from 15hl/ha. to 35hl/ha.
The grapes are harvested by hand and placed in small boxes to preserve the berries.
They are harvested when they have come to perfect maturation: the actual grape-picking can be spread out
over several weeks as they are picked only when they have fully ripened. Grapes of insufficient quality are
rejected. This is why the grapes are picked over small areas at a time, even row by row.
The wine matures in new oaken casks, which necessitates important material investment and is our guarantee of
high quality.
The Pic Saint-Loup
It is the most traditional and prestigious of the Coteaux du Languedoc wines. Benefitting from a unique microclimate, under continental and Mediterranean influences, the Pic Saint-Loup wines naturally combine freshness
and structure and have a well-marked identity.
The clay and limestone soil owes its texture and structure to mudslides from the Pic.
The vines are situated in the communes of Saint Mathieu de Tréviers, Triadou and Fontanès.
Art and Wine
Woman with the hat– Roger Bonafé
The work of internationally renowned painter Roger Bonafé is expressed with colour and grace. He lives in the
South of France and exhibits all over the world, from Japan to the U.S.
His art is much more than simple juxtaposition: the colours, shapes and effects are minutely studied to form a
harmonious composition. Au fil des années, ses aplats sont fondus et simplifiés.
The « two Rogers » have long been friends – the painter and the winegrower. From this friendship has sprung “La
Femme au chapeau”, which now hangs in the reception hall of the Clos des Augustins wine storehouse.
Roger Bonafé has graciously given permission to the Clos des Augustins to use « La Femme au chapeau », and it is
used on the labels of the domain’s wines.
The original of the triptyque can be seen in the main hall of the wine storehouse.
THE TERROIR
Twenty kilometres north of Montpellier, at the border of the Gard and Herault, two French winegrowing regions,
the Pic Saint Loup is the highest of the northern Languedoc hills and possesses one of the most prestigious
vineyards. The Pic Saint Loup (658 m) and the Causse de l’Hortus (512 m) dominate the surrounding hills which
are up to 150 metres in height.
Le Pic Saint Loup (658 m)
Pic Saint Loup wines have a strong identity. This unique characteristic comes from clayey and chalky soil from
fallen debris as well a micro climate.
The vineyard is under Mediterranean and continental influence, in which temperatures vary from very high to
quite low, especially in summer when it is hot during the day and cool at night.
A PASSION FOR WINE
Wine growers since 1920, Roger MEZY and his sons Frederic and Damien, three impassioned people, are proud to
present their gourmet robust wines.
The vines are located in the Saint Mathieu de Tréviers and Triadou communes. Thanks to low production, manual
grape harvest, and meticulous selection, the grapes are gathered at perfect maturity and under optimal
conditions.
Aging processes take place on site, in thermo-regulated vats, under the control of the oenologist Pascal
CHATONNET, internationally acclaimed. The use of barrels completes the total harmony of the wine production.
We work with four different coopers (SEGUIN MOREAU, TONNELERIE BORDELAISE, SAURY and VICARD) with the
best selections of French oak.

This wine shows a perfect maturation of the fruit with an added complexity of hints of fennel and aniseed, plus
floral, gorse and honey touches. There is a trace of iris in its spicy intensity. The vine’s peachy savours from the
Roussanne grape give it a classic, Mediterranean definition within a fine and elegant registry. The mouth is
ample and lush with just enough acidity to give it freshness and depth. The ensemble is well-balanced, savoury
and lingers in the mouth.
