Letter from the Founder
and Executive Director
Welcome to the 16th annual International
Family Film Festival (IFFF) at The Raleigh
Studios in Hollywood, CA. This is our fifth year
presenting the festival at Raleigh Studios.
Given Raleigh’s studio history and flare for
championing independent artists, it’s a fitting
home for an indie fest like ours – we appreciate
sharing the Raleigh Lot for a week in the heart
of Hollywood.
The IFFF celebrates cultural diversity, creativity, tolerance and
global unity in its exhibition of excellent family films and screenplays.
We showcase films and scripts that are rich in storytelling, strong on
character development that engage the mind and tug on the heart – if
we achieve this at least in part, we are accomplishing our mission.
Foreign film screenings are up this year. Over 5 days, IFFF will screen
films from 23 countries, including Brazil, Burundi, China, Cuba, Israel,
Kenya, South Korea, Syria and the UK to name a few. Domestically,
the fest features films submitted from as far as the cold Arctic climes of
Alaska to the balmy sunlit beaches of Florida. Encouraging participation
from professional student filmmakers, the IFFF attracted entries from 22
public and private film schools such as USC, NYU, UCLA, Chapman,
Florida State, Tel Aviv University and Kibera Film School (Kenya).
Newly launched at this festival is the International
Family Film Institute (IFFI), IFFF’s educational
and outreach division dedicated to youth. The
Institute provides educational activities that inspire
curiosity, leadership, self-esteem, team building,
character development, inquiry about storytelling
and the language, media and family literacy arts.
Specifically, these programs include the IFFF
Youth Fest! screening amateur made films of merit,
the formation of film clubs guided by Freshi Films’ Young Filmmaker’s
Starter Kits and IFFF Hollywood film and acting camps/workshops.
These activities help youth and their families expand and better
understand the media rich world we now live in.
This year’s festival theme, “Family Stories Are Evergreen,” reminds us
that certain well-told stories never go out of fashion, regardless of what
the flavor of the month might be. As our world shifts on its axis, bumped
by the likes of cultural revolutions, a global economic recession and the
rapid fire globalization fueled faster by social networking, new family
stories are forever being written – IFFF plans to receive and share many
of these only now unfolding stories with you in the years ahead.
Speaking out, IFFF is delighted to honor Mr. Bill Farmer, a vocal tour de
force and the indelible voice artist of Goofy and Pluto among countless
other characters. Bill is a “Disney Legend” and he receives IFFF’s
coveted “Friz Award” for Excellence in Animation. Join us in saluting
this outstanding talent, warm and generous person.
On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, Advisory Board, the Staff
and supportive Sponsors and friends, we give our sincerest thanks to
you for making IFFF “evergreen” for yet another year – long live family
and films!
Warmest Regards,
Chris Shoemaker

Friends of the Festival
For a second year, the IFFF is proud to present
a select group of Chinese films representing the diverse cultural heritage of this vast country. Each of
these films was selected because they are intended
for a family audience and they highlight the colorful geography and diversity of this vast country. The
elements that run common through each of these
films is the profound respect for cultural heritage, the
power of children and the universality of family.
Distributors and Industry Members
As with last year, a delegation of twenty filmmakersWednesday, March 16 unspools the first of these
films with the screening of Horizon, a Mongolian language film, for opening night. Throughout the festival
ten new films will be premiered to American audiences followed by Q & A sessions with the artistic
team accompanying each film. On Saturday, March
19, the Producing Films in China panel discussion
offers rare insight into the co-production world of
China. There is a willingness to share film resources
between China and the United States and this panel
is a way for filmmakers to meet future partners and
share their dealmaking tips and insights.

This year an extraordinary story comes from an
unknown group of filmmakers who live on the
Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. Of course the title of
their film is 48 Below!. The film was selected as
a finalist in this year’s line-up. The film’s backstory is a grabber. A community of ice truckers
pooled their money to make this feature film.
They did it to keep their kids engaged in something constructive, to keep them off drugs. They
made their film, and just to attend the fest, the
young Alaskan filmmakers held bake sales and
car washes to raise funds to travel to Hollywood!
To give back to IFFF, the community people donated Salmon Fishing Trips to the Kenai, Halibut
Fishing Boat excursions, nights at an Alaska
Lodge Bed & Breakfast and passes to the local
Aquarium. These businesses have never been
to Hollywood or to the festival; they just want to
help a family film festival. How do we thank them
for this sponsorship? We share the story with you
and encourage all of you to visit the Kenai Peninsula. Together, let’s help promote Alaska Tourism
and maybe 48 Below! will travel to heat up the
other 49 states!

“Doing Goofy
isn’t too much
of a stretch”
6
B
ill Farmer has been
vitally involved in the
entertainment industry for
more than 30 years. When Bill’s
wife introduces him to people as
“my husband Bill, he’s goofy,”
he doesn’t take it personally. He
just laughs, “ah-hyuck,” and the
confused looks turn to smiles
of recognition. Farmer’s voice
is familiar around the world as
that of Goofy and Pluto, two
of Disney’s most enduring and
endearing characters.
“Goofy
was always my favorite,” Farmer
says, “so this really is a dream
come true.”
A native of Pratt, Kansas,
Farmer grew up not far from
Missouri, where the original
cartoon adventures of Mickey,
Donald and Goofy took place, and
where Walt Disney spent part of
his childhood. “Doing Goofy isn’t
too much of a stretch,” Farmer
says. “His voice is so close to my
own, I just exaggerate it a bit.”
With his blond good looks and
natural ability to negotiate a flight
of stairs without falling, Farmer
appears to have little in common
with his animated alter-ego, aside
from the melodic Midwestern
twang. “Well,” he admits, “there
is something. We’re both eternal
optimists.” Which explains the,
uh, goofy way he began his
career in voice impressions.
“I’d been doing impressions
since the age of 15,” Farmer
recalls. “It was great for teen
pranks – we’d pile into a car,
pull up at the Burger King
drive-through speaker, and I’d
order the burgers as Walter
Brennan.” After graduating from
the University of Kansas with a
degree in broadcast journalism,
Farmer tried careers in radio
and electronics, but he never
stopped developing his voice
repertoire, which grew to include
100 celebrity impressions.
Farmer ultimately opted to take
his one-man cast of characters to
Los Angeles for a crack at show
business. “The first animation
audition I went up for in 1986 was
Goofy, and I’ve been at it ever
since.” Farmer fashioned his
Goofy voice after Pinto Colvig,
the former circus clown and
musician who originated Goofy’s
famous laugh in 1932, and was
the official voice of Goofy for
many years. Using a reference
tape supplied by Disney, Farmer
recreated Colvig’s laugh and
sing-song delivery style. “But
the hardest thing to learn was the
Goofy yell,” says Farmer of the
patented “ya-ha-ha-hoooiieee!”
that has accompanied Goofy’s
elaborate pratfalls since the 1941
short The Art of Skiing (it was
originated by noted Olympic skier
and yodeler Hannes Shrolle).
As the voice of Goofy, Farmer
has starred in an animated
feature film (A Goofy Movie) and
television series (Goof Troop),
as well as many roles – as both
Goofy and Pluto (since early 1987)
– throughout The Walt Disney
Company. Farmer also supplies
the voice of famed Disney
characters Horace Horsecollar,
Practical Pig and Sleepy of the
Seven Dwarfs, and both scripted
and voiced the character of “Alec
Tronic” in the Innoventions exhibit
at Epcot Center in Florida.
Bill continues voicing the Goof
and Pluto to this day and has
worked on over 2,000 projects
for Disney alone. Among his
many non-Disney performances,
Farmer has also ventured into
other classic roles, including the
famed Warner Bros. characters
Bugs
Bunny,
Daffy
Duck,
Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam
and Foghorn Leghorn in Space
Jam, as the voice of Stinky in the
direct-to-video sequel, Casper:
A Spirited Beginning, and as the
vice of President George Bush in
an episode of Murphy Brown.
One of the things Farmer
enjoys most about being the
official voice of Goofy, aside
from the creative challenge, is
the work he does with children’s
charities. “I love calling kids on
the phone as Goofy,” he says.
“These characters are so real to
them. It’s a thrill for them and, at
the same time, it seems perfectly
natural to kids that Goofy would
pick up the phone and give them
a call. And I’m glad to oblige.”
Bill remains a very active voiceover actor in animation as well as
in commercials, video games,
television, and film. Bill heads
his own production company,
Toonhouse Inc, which produces
documentaries, actor demos,
and teaches voice-over skills to
seasoned pros and young actors
alike.
Farmer received the coveted
Disney Legend Award in a
ceremony at the Anaheim
Convention Center along with
other entertainment greats such
as Robin Williams, Betty White,
and others on September 10,
2009.
Bill lives in Los Angeles with his
wife and son.

Tribute to Bill Farmer
What a joy and a privilege for me to honor our friend Bill Farmer. Bill is an extremely
talented actor of many voices, yet also a gracious human being. He always takes
time to answer questions and share conversations with his fans. Eddie Carroll, my
husband looked forward to sharing recordings and events with Bill. Disney is a
happy place because these kind of folks help make it that way.
It is impossible to think of Bill without including Jennifer. They are a team in
every area of their lives and support each other in their careers. A terrific trait
and they are fun and good people that we consider to be part of our family,
(even if Bill is Goofy and from Pratt, Kansas.)
Most importantly, both are caring humanitarians and care deeply about young
people and the world. Kudos to them.
Love you both!
Carolyn Carroll and the rest of the Carroll Family

ANNOUNCING THE INAUGURAL YEAR OF THE
INTERNATIONAL FAMILY FILM INSTITUTE
The IFFF was founded in 1993 on the strength and vision of offering its
members and participants the best in traditional and groundbreaking family stories – stories that inspire our minds, change our hearts, and lift our
spirits. It has never wavered from the delivery of its promise.
This year, the IFFF is proud to launch the International Family Film Institute
(IFFI), its educational division guided by that vision and committed to the
idea that the 21st century is a media century where this new generation
will connect globally through cultural sharing in film and media production.
After all, a picture is worth a thousand words and our world is already
showing the power of change influenced by media in the hands of youth.
During 2011, the IFFI will be introducing:
Filmmaking Clubs
Become a Founding Member
Supported by grants and sponsorship, IFFI will distribute filmmaking kits
to schools that come complete with cameras, curriculum and lesson plans
and critical on-line teacher training to enrich the academic resources of
a school community, after school program or youth group with media
education tools critical to the 21st century.
Movies On The Move
For the first time, the IFFF is holding two off-site screenings, in Alhambra
and Rowland Heights, during the days of the festival. Throughout the
year, important films from the festival will travel to community libraries and
schools and take their message directly to the audience with support from
local community leaders.

International Filmmaking Camp
Each summer, IFFI offers summer camp programs in filmmaking and
acting. They encourage youth from other countries to come together and
create, learn, produce and showcase their work. These forty hour camps
are one week, 8 hours a day. There will be a minimum of two camps offered between July and August in Hollywood.

“If you treat the people around you the way you
want to be treated, what do you think would
happen? It may take a while, but probably you
will find that people will begin to treat you the
same way you treat them.
“Life is much happier and more pleasant when
you treat others as you want them to treat you.”
