situation
oak cottage is situated in the ashcombe valley, a
designated area of outstanding natural beauty fringed
with woodland and offering a traditional rural landscape,
yet only a few miles from the a380 serving the m5
motorway and the coast. the property is surrounded by
the pastureland of the historic and beautiful luscombe
estate, and enjoys seasonal sea views across the fields in
the distance. less than a mile away is the historic seaside
town of dawlish, recorded in the domesday book and
set in countryside bordered with the impressive cliffs of
the sandstone coastline, adjoining brunel’s stunning south
devon coast Railway. beaches here include boat cove
and the town beach that stretches all the way to dawlish
warren, home to a two mile stretch of golden sand and
nature Reserve, where there are many protected and
unusual species of plant and wildlife. For the active, many
lovely countryside and coastal walks are in the vicinity of
the property and scenic teignmouth golf course is very
close by. the bustling coastal town of teignmouth is only
a few miles by car and the city of exeter is an easy drive
from dawlish (approximately 12 miles).
the PRoPeRty

gothic style sandstone building has 2 large gables with
decorated bargeboards, tiled roof and clustered
chimneystacks, and gabled porch. the interior of the
property has many original features including lovely stone
mullioned windows with leaded lights.the property,
originally 4 landed estate staff cottages, is now a muchloved substantial home including 4 reception rooms and
4 double size bedrooms, set in magnificent grounds of
approximately one acre. this property would suit anyone
seeking a character property in a peaceful location with
delightful rural views, wonderful gardens and parking.
histoRical note
in 1949, lady michelmore, younger sister of ‘monty’,
(viscount montgomery of alamein), took up residence at
oak cottage on a 20 year lease. after enjoying many
happy years in residence, this had to be terminated due
to her husband’s ill health. winsome michelmore’s
autobiography “thursday’s child” provides a good insight
into fascinating life with husband ‘wangy’ at oak cottage
(printed by a. wheaton and co. ltd, exeter).

gaRdens & gRounds
this charming property oozing character is surrounded by its
delightful and mature grounds of approximately one acre. the
grounds include a wide driveway with plenty of parking and
turning space where there is a detached double garage block. 2
separate pedestrian gates give access from the road to the front
and side of the property. to the front elevation, there is a lovely
old covered verandah with cobbled floor (accessed from the
Family Room and kitchen/breakfast Room) beyond which is a
gravelled area with stone balustrading. this area has a most
attractive outlook across the fields of the luscombe estate. the
gravelled area leads around to the side of the property and opens
to a further large gravelled area beyond which is a large level lawn.
to the rear of the property, there is a most attractive sandstone
outbuilding of good size, (thought to be the store houses for the
staff cottages). divided into units, fascinatingly they still contain
evidence of an earlier time with a large stone bath and a wooden
privy still intact. the courtyard area which lies between the main
property and the outbuilding is enchanting – where colourful
flowers in tubs and pots add splashes of colour against the golden
hues of the sandstone buildings lending an almost tuscan feel to
the scene. adjoining this area, is a lovely italian style garden with
low box hedging creating the impression of a miniature stately
home, at the centre of which is a good sized raised ornamental
lily pond. areas of seating to the rear of this area provide lovely
spots of sun and shade for dining or just enjoying the peace and
seclusion. this area is bordered to the west with a further level
area of lawn, where there is a good deal of privacy and a variety
of trees including a chestnut. there is also a greenhouse here. nb there is access from the garden through to a further level lawned
area which is rented from the luscombe estate for £150 p.a.
