Sam Rhine To Give Genetics Update
Sam Rhine has crossed
the country for 30+ years
presenting the latest genetic
information to high school
students and their teachers. He
has also spoken to audiences in
Toronto, Montreal, Tokyo,
Vienna, Prague, St. Petersburg,
Russia, and Nairobi, Kenya.
Sam has devoted himself to
genetics education. He is a
gifted speaker with a passion to
teach the “world” the applicability of
genetics to daily living. He began while he
was a graduate student by speaking to high
school biology classes, first in Indianapolis
and then in Boston. Soon he was presenting
whole-school convocations to hundreds of
students on two main topics: prevention of
birth defects, "The Most Important Nine
Month of Your Life," and prevention of
AIDS, "Say 'Know' to AIDS."
For the past several years, Sam has
concentrated on presenting Genetic
Update Conferences (GUC's). These
one-day conferences for biology
teachers and students are designed
to teach the latest in genetic
advances, hot research areas, and
career opportunities. Sam takes
biology from the textbook to the
heart by posing ethical dilemmas
each will face as technological
advances continue.
In 1997, the National
Association of Biology Teachers presented
Sam with the NABT Honorary Membership
Award. This award is given to one teacher in
the U.S. annually and is the highest honor that
the association can bestow upon members of
the profession. Sam and his wife of 40 years
live in suburban Indianapolis. They have two
children and eight grandchildren who live
close by and keep life “lively.” Dr. Rhine will
speak at the LISDA on Tuesday Feb. 3 from
9AM to 1PM.

Got Questions About College
Opportunities?
From www.collegeboard.com
Tip #1 - Pulling Your Application
Together
•
Narrow your list of colleges to 5 and
review it with your counselor. Get an
application and financial aid info from
each. Visit as many as possible.
Make a master calendar and note:
•
Test dates, fees, and deadlines
•
College application due dates
•
Required financial aid applications and
their deadlines
•
Recommendations, transcripts, and other
necessary materials
•
Your high school's deadlines for application requests, such as your transcript
•
Ask for recommendations. Give each
person your resume, a stamped, addressed
envelope, and any required forms.
•
Write application essays and ask teachers,
parents, and friends to read first drafts.
Did you know… that more
than 70% of college and
state deadlines occur between February and April?

Boys Varsity Wins
In Overtime 66-64
By Nikki Goudeau
4-3 in district, the Panther
basketball team showed no mercy towards
the Splendora Wildcats on their own
grounds this past Tuesday. With and
ending score of 66-64, the Panthers were
victorious. Not only did they win, they
outscored the Wildcats in overtime when
senior Arlando Senegal scored an
unpredictable lay-up. Astonished, the boys
fought hard, running the Wildcats with fast
breaks, three pointers, and for some, a
game of one-on-one.
The outstanding player for this
game was junior point-guard, Terrance
Roberts, scoring 13 points during the
original game, along with another added 11
during overtime. Their next game will be
against the Cleveland Indians at home
beginning at 7:30PM.
Lady Panthers Hit
Rough Streak
By Dustin Nelson
So far this year the girls Varsity
basketball team is currently 1-8 in district.
The girls seem to have hit a rough spot
these past couple of games. They fell
behind 55-44 yesterday in the game against
Splendora. Player Michelle Braxton led the
team scoring 12 points in the game. Last
Friday, the Lady Panthers lost against
Coldspring with a final score of 74-46.
Sharday Freeman led that game by scoring
19 points. This Friday, the LHS Girls
Basketball is facing Cleveland here in
Liberty.
The NACB (Nation Association of
Basketball Coaches) is having Coaches vs.
Cancer games this weekend, January 30th
thru February 1st. The games will be
promoting breast cancer awareness and
other cancers in general. Our girls will be
participating in this event this Friday
