Lady Panthers
Busy During
the Holidays
By Shannon Smith and Kerry Green
The Lady Panthers lost 53-42 to
Splendora just before the Christmas
break. Then on December 29, during the
holiday, they played in a tournament at
Livingston against, Anahuac and North
Forest. Liberty beat Anahuac 65-47 and
only fell by 2 points in their game against
North Forest 37-35. On January 2,
Liberty claimed another victory against
Newton, in our gym, sending them home
sad faced after losing by 12 points. The
final score for that game was 63-51.
Tuesday of this week, they played a home
game against Cleveland. Although they
didn’t win,
they hustled
and played
even harder.
The
score
was 41-52 in
the end. The
girls
have
played many
games
and
there’s still
more to come.
Unfortunately, this will be the
last season of high school basketball for
the seniors on the team including,
Michelle Braxton, Sharday Freeman,
Amy Arnold, Danielle Walker and
manager Kelsey Duff. Nikki G. says,
“The seniors this year are really
encouraging, and the whole team enjoys
having them. We will really miss them
next year.”
In JV action Tuesday night, the
girls lost to Cleveland at Cleveland 2931. It was a close game all night, tied at
half time but they couldn't pull it out.
The girls played hard, but basic
basketball mistakes (turnovers) hurt the
team. Amber Godinich, Alexis Senegal,
and Meredith Taylor all had 6 points
each.

AP Ranks Florida Gators #1 After 24-14 Defeat Of
Oklahoma in National Championship Game
Florida is No. 1 in the AP Top 25.
Utah is perfect at No. 2, though not
perfectly happy. Texas and Southern
California also claimed to be the best but
media voters didn't think so. Florida won
its third AP national championship and
second in the last three seasons.
The Gators were ranked #1 in the
poll released early today, after they beat
Oklahoma 24-14 in the BCS national title
game. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime in
an uncharacteristically defensive first half.
The statistics of the game were fairly tight
until the fourth when the Gators, led by

Tim Tebow clearly outplayed the Sooners.

Utah, the only team in major
college football to go undefeated this season,

iTunes In For A Big Change
For the last six years,
Apple has sold the vast majority of
its music through iTunes for 99
cents with DRM (digital rights
management). Apple's iPods hold
nearly 75% of the digital music
market, and the iTunes store has
become the largest seller of music
in the United States.
Music labels, however, do not like
the single price point, and some consumers
felt the DRM was too restrictive. This
opened the door for digital music
competitors like Amazon, which sells DRMfree music for multiple prices.
By the end of the quarter, Apple
said it will offer its whole catalog of music,
10 million tracks, for sale without DRM.
The music will be in the iTunes Plus format,
which is a higher-quality 256 Kbps AAC
encoding. Users have the option of
upgrading their current library to the higherquality, DRM-free format for 30 cents a
song.
The company will also
introduce variable pricing for its
music starting in April, with
price points of 69 cents, 99
cents, and $1.29. This has been a
point of contention for many
music companies that wanted to
be able to charge different prices
depending on the demand of the
song.
The company also couldn't ignore the
popular iPhone 3G in its announcement, and
Apple said customers can now browse,
preview, and purchase music from iTunes on
the go over 3G data networks. Previously,
iPhone users could only buy music from
Apple over Wi-Fi networks. The songs
purchased over the air will be the same quality
and price as those bought from a desktop, and
the music is transferred to the desktop account
the next time the smartphone is synced.

Soccer Organized By Coach Deel
By Austin Gruver
Wednesday after school, those students who planned to
participate, had a meeting to discuss this year’s soccer season.
Soccer practices will begin next Wednesday, January 14th right
after school. Games will start mid-February and continue
through April. Coaches are trying to organize some 10 games
against teams that are just starting out. There were 73 boys that
signed up which will be divided into separate teams consisting
of around 20 players. There will only be one girl’s soccer team
because there was only around 20 players signed up. Students
will be expected to keep passing grades to be able to play and
those that fail will be forced to sit out for 3 weeks. Students will
also need to bring a pair of cleats and shin guards for the
Wednesday practice.
