The 2014-2015 school year has been exciting; the
level of engagement by our students is truly remarkable. The student body continues to commit themselves
to education by being the central character in their academic success. Historically, the malaise of third quarter
is turned around by the urgency of the fourth quarter
and students want to finish strong. The senior class is
still preparing for AP tests and finals so they are maintaining an appropriate level of seriousness despite 8
days of school left for them. Our attendance rates
stayed consistent around the mid-nineties and the activities provided another engaging activity to connect
with our school.
With the calendar shifting to May, our students are
looking forward to summer break. April was a very important assessment month. The juniors completed the
Nebraska State Assessments in Reading, Math and Science. The results from the state reading, math, and
science tests are sent to the districts in the summer
and will be disseminated in the fall to our seniors.
Elkhorn High School would like to thank our teachers
who are leaving EHS after years of service to our
students: English teachers Jens Gregory and Elizabeth
Ackerman, special education teacher Cassie Sund and
paraprofessionals : Randy Donner, Nancy Edwards,
Cathy Hanson, Chris Showman and Julie Thurston. It
was truly a privilege to work with these teachers as they
served their school district and students with professionalism and sound instruction. Their work with our
students has meaning and lasting value. I wanted to
publically thank you for committing your time to public
education and spending time with our students in the
classroom and in special education.

As a reminder, Honors Night is Wednesday, May 13,
2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Parents, please
encourage your student to attend this final ceremony
acknowledging academic excellence. We have plenty of
students to acknowledge. All National Honor Society
students are expected to attend. Teachers will be
contacting individual students to remind them to attend
the ceremony and to tell their proud parents about the
award.
Graduation will be held Sunday, May 17, 2015 at
4:00 p.m. in the EHS gymnasium. Please join us at the
honors night and graduation ceremony to recognize the
academic accomplishments of our students. Seniors
should arrive for graduation no later than 3:00 p.m. on
Sunday, May 17 in the auxiliary gym. Please remember
that graduation is a ceremony; therefore, please refrain
from bringing artificial noise makers that would detract
from the audience hearing another graduate’s name as
he/she receives his/her diploma.
Seniors will be taking their finals for periods 5, 6,
and 7 on Tuesday, May 12 and finals for periods 1, 2,
3, and 4 on Wednesday, May 13, 2014. We will have a
senior picture in the gym, graduation rehearsal, and
seniors will turn in their completed senior checkout
sheets to receive their cap and gown for graduation.
Seniors will be released around 2:15 on Wednesday,
May 13.
EHS students will be dismissed for final testing at
12:55 p.m. on Thursday, May 21 and at 11:45 a.m. on
Friday, May 22, 2015. EHS will not be serving lunch on
either day. The last school day is Friday, May 22.
Report cards will be mailed home around May 29.

Distribution of the 2015 yearbook will take
place Friday, May 8 from 3:20-3:50 p.m.
If any classes want to or have ability to end
at 3:00 that day, students are welcome to the
commons to get their books at 3:00, but they
must remain in the commons until the bell
rings at 3:20.
No yearbooks will be distributed early; absolutely no exceptions will be made for this. If
students cannot make it on Friday, they can
get it on Monday after school in Room C-205.

REMINDERS FOR SENIORS:
Graduation Videos will be available through Mid-America
Video; an order table will be set up in the commons area
on the day of graduation.
Graduation Photos will be available through Dwyer Photography, capturing each graduate as they receive their
diploma, and also a ‘Class of 2015’ photo.
Photos will be available for purchase online
(www.mdpinc.com/) and at the ceremony.
Senior's last school day is Wednesday, May 13, and will
include a Class photo, graduation rehearsal, and completed senior checkout sheets must be turned in to
receive your graduation cap and gown.
On graduation day, Sunday, May 17, please report to
the auxiliary gym no later than 3:00 p.m.
Doors open for family & friends at 2:00 p.m. with
the graduation ceremony beginning at 4:00 p.m.

~ Medication Pick-up ~
The school is not able to store medication over the summer. So please remember, all student medications must be
picked up by a parent/guardian, from the health office by May 22nd, or it will be properly disposed of.

If your student requires any medication (over-the-counter and/or prescription) while at school, each medication must
have a Medication Authorization form (link below) signed by the parent and a physician, before we can administer. All
medications must be unexpired and provided in the original packaging and/or pharmacy container.

Senior News
SUMMER SCHOOL
Senior Exit Information: A letter was sent home in
April to all seniors. Seniors were asked to return a
sheet asking about future plans, final transcripts and
scholarships by April 17th. Additional scholarships
received after this date can still be turned into
Mrs. Dowd in case there is still time to be reported
in the graduation program. Please also bring in a
PHOTOCOPY of any scholarship award letters you
have received to Mrs. Dowd. These can be emailed
to [email protected]. Also, final transcripts must be
sent to the student’s college of choice. If a student
changes their college choice during the summer,
email or leave a voice mail for Mrs. Frevert
[email protected] and she will send a transcript.
EHS Summer School: The Elkhorn High Summer
School program will run from Monday June 1st to
Friday July 26th. Elkhorn’s program is used for
CREDIT RECOVERY and is computer based and
self-paced. Credit is given for successful completion.
Sessions will be held Monday through Friday. The
cost is $125 per course. Space is limited and counselors will contact students with the greatest need for
credit recovery in order to stay on track for graduation. In many cases, a student can make up a failed
course during the school year in place of an elective.
College Credits Earned: If a senior has earned college credits either through dual credit opportunities or
AP test scores, the student is responsible for completing the correct paperwork to have their college credits
transferred to the college they plan to attend. See
Mrs. Hightower if there are questions.


When completing the AP test, students will be
able to indicate which college scores should be
sent. Scores will be sent to colleges in late July.

Sports Locker Check-Ins at the End of School Year
Students are reminded that in order to receive their $5 deposit, they need to bring their padlock to the A.D. office during
the normal school day. Mr. Zeplin will check the lock serial number for verification. Check out for lockers for next fall will
be assigned by each sport’s head coach, and available through the A.D. office. Students must have all forms completed and turned into the AD offices to check out a locker for Fall Sports. Students WILL NOT be allowed to save, use or
check out a locker without first turning in their forms for fall sports.

We’re looking for peer mentors to volunteer to work with our students with developmental disabilities. Our volunteers will
work with students in classes ranging from PE to Art. They’ll help our students develop their reading, math, and social skills.
More importantly, our volunteers will develop friendships with students that may otherwise have never developed. If you’re

TEAM+S
The national results from “The Power of Engineering” TEAM+S contest are in for both Part I (multiple choice) and Part II (essays) EHS did very well! The Junior Varsity Team (Claire Wichman, Carly Cameron, Brett LaFleur, Annie Wang, Travis Bond, Josh Thiele,
Logan Spanel, and Zach Headley) won “Best in State”. The Varsity Team (Collin Roessner, Quin Tarrence, Jacob Thiele, Jessee
Zhang, Tanner Whitaker, Emin Tahirov, Jimmy Nugent, Alex Seggerman) placed 2 nd in State.
Quiz Bowl
Congratulations to the varsity quiz bowl team for winning the State Championship at Holdrege, NE – repeating their 2013-2014
championship victory! Team members include Collin Roessner (captain), Emily Benes, Maddie Kimme, Quin Tarrence, Jocelyn
Daubendiek, and Jacob Carmichael. The team has qualified for Nationals and will be competing in Chicago this summer.
Olympus Club
Over 60 Olympus Club members representing both Elkhorn high schools enjoyed a night filled with dodge ball, basketball, volleyball,
air hockey, board games and swimming at the annual Common Ground lock in. Zach Woosley (ESHS) and Annie Wang (EHS), as
the 3:00am high scorers in Speed, Bananagrams, and Set, tied for the title of Iron Mind Champions.
Robotics
Both teams did well at the U.S. Open, competing against over 200 teams from over 30 states. The Robotics team is making plans
for next year’s challenge, “Nothing But Net” (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8daR6qBw3M). Anyone interested in participating next year should contact Mrs. Johnson.
Academic Decathlon
Academic Decathlon is a cross curricular competition with studies of art, music, literature, economics, science, social science, and
mathematics around a central theme. Next year’s topic is India. Science includes ecology & economics relevant to India. The literature novel is Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya. Art encompasses the art and architecture of India. Social science includes
the history of modern India. Study materials will be provided for use over the summer. There will be an informational meeting during
TA in May.

Dangers of Distracted Driving
More than 3,000 Americans were killed and 400,000 more were injured in car crashes attributed to distracted drivers in 2013. Driving is
an important responsibility and one of the best ways to encourage students to become responsible drivers is to model safe, attentive
driving. Here are a few easy tips to avoid distracted driving: Keep your phone in the glove box, trunk or back seat to avoid temptation to
use it while driving; Tell friends before leaving that you’re going to be driving and may not respond; As a passenger, ask other drivers not
to text and drive; Remember that no text or phone call is more important than your responsibility behind the wheel. (distraction.gov)
Popular Websites—Craigslist
Craigslist is a local, online network of classifieds, personal ads and forums. While the site can be a valuable tool for buying and selling
goods or locating local services, a string of incidents involving scams, impersonation and theft should have users on high alert. Craigslist
is not meant for children, and interactions should always be conducted and/or supervised by adults. Users should carefully follow safety
guidelines to avoid dangerous situations and possible scams.
Educational Apps—NOVA Elements
NOVA Elements is a free app created by PBS to allow students to further explore the periodic table. Users can find detailed information
on each element, see how elements combine to make everyday objects, play a chemistry game and much more. This app is recommend-
