Their lives and ours are touched by the Risen Christ. Every Sunday was a feast celebrating the one great feast. Even though our calendar now has many beautiful and holy feasts, we must continually be called back to the fact that all these other feasts exist because of the feast of Christ’s passover from death to life. The psalm today proclaims this message well: “This is the day.” It is not one of many days, but it is the day of all days, the one that gives all the others their origin, purpose, meaning, and destiny. Listen carefully to Peter’s speech in Acts with its recollection of the Passion, to the words of the apostle Paul, and to the account of Mary Magdalene, John, and Peter finding the empty tomb, and you will hear the many wonderful works that God has done for us through Christ. Rejoice and be glad! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Easter Sunday Page 4 THE RISEN LIGHT OF CHRIST One of the meaningful symbols of the Easter Vigil is the service of light. The Paschal Candle is brought through the Church in solemn procession, pushing back the darkness. This Easter Candle represents the Risen Light of Christ, which pushes back the darkness about life’s lack of meaning. Seventeen adults are joining St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community at the vigil service. Once the Paschal Candle reaches the sanctuary area, our new fellow pilgrims will light their candles from the Christ Candle and pass on the light until the candles of all are lit. The symbolism is breathtaking, with each person holding their lit candle – the darkness will disappear in the Church – Christ is blessing us with the light of His Risen Presence. 'The Light of the World' is the title of a famous picture painted by Holman Hunt. It shows the thorn-crowned Jesus with a lantern in his hand knocking on a closed door and is based on those lovely words of Christ in Revelation: "Listen, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into his house and eat with him and he will eat with me." (Rev. 3:20) The door of course is the human heart, and it is said that the artist having completed the picture showed it to some friends who praised the merit of the painting. One of them pointed out what he considered an omission on the part of the artist. "You have put no handle on the door. " he said to Holman Hunt who replied immediately, "You forget—we must open to the light, the handle is on the inside." On entering our Church on Easter morning, you will be struck by the tasteful flowers and ambiance that declares Christ is Risen. My faith is always strengthened by the example of our fellow parishioners. This year the attendance at daily Mass during Lent, the stations of the cross, the parish mission, reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Holy Week ceremonies, the RCIA, the hope of our sick parishioners, the garden workers, the joy of our children, the quiet example of our liturgy ministers and the unselfish giving of all, has added to the joy of Easter. It is a special blessing being your Pastor. Together please God, parishioners, staff and our extended families will give even greater Glory to God, this Easter and beyond. God Bless And Easter Joy To All. Fr. Mike ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Giggles: On Sunday morning before Mass the local golf professional brought back Fr. Murphy his golf clubs, which he had been repairing. A young parishioner, who saw the priest receive the golf clubs, said to his parents "We won't be too long at Mass this morning." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Bishop was visiting a catholic school and he was carrying his Bishops Crook (Staff). The Bishop informed the class about his role as shepherd. He then asked what a Shepherd's Crook was? A young student answered, "It's the guy who steals the sheep." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Definitions: Decongestion: Too many deacons at a meeting. Atheism: A non-prophet organization. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When the priest entered the pulpit, he realized he forgot his homily notes. He apologized, "I forgot my notes, I must rely on the Lord. I promise to come better prepared next Sunday." Scholars suggest that Mark was written in Rome around the year 70 A.D. The Jewish War was ending, and the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed. Christians in Rome were suffering persecution; many Christians died in Circus Maximus because of their faith in Jesus, the Christ. The evangelist Mark, who was a friend/disciple of Peter, writes to both challenge and consol the church in Rome. Mark remembers (in the Jewish sense—the past becomes present) the ministry, the Passion and the Resurrection of Jesus. This story of Jesus, the Christ is our story today. We are not in ancient Rome, but still the story gives challenge and consolation. We read and study to become better Christians. The classes will be held on April 18, 25, May 2nd and 4th, Wednesday, two sessions, 9:30—11am & 7 -8:30pm. Bring your bible. Recommended Reading: John R. Donahue, S.J. and Daniel J.
