The Year in Review-2009
Heart of Texas Goodwill
Opens New Facility
On April 24, 2009, Heart of Texas
Goodwill Industries held a grand
opening celebration for the new
65,000 square foot corporate
headquarters building. This facility
contains the administrative offices, a
Learning Center, donation collection
drive thru, donation processing
center, new goods department, and
retail store. Festivities included a ribbon cutting ceremony, facility tours, door prizes, and a catered
lunch.
Heart of Texas Goodwill is Awarded an Americorps Volunteer Grant
In order to build capacity in the newest Learning Center,
HOT Goodwill signed up to be a host site for Americorps
service members. These members were part of a grant
awarded to Goodwill International through the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Americorps members
provide direct service to participants, implement new
service programs, and develop community partnerships.
Learning Centers Expand Services and
Community Partnerships
The opening of the Waco Learning Center allowed for an expansion
of the services currently offered in the Killeen & Temple Learning
Centers as well as development of new programs and community
partnerships. Aware Central Texas, a non-profit dedicated to
reducing child abuse and child death in Bell County, expanded their Parenting and Anger Management
classes to the Waco community. Also, GED and ESL classes were offered through a partnership
between Goodwill and the Mclennan Community College Adult Education Department. As in Killeen
and Temple, the Waco Learning Center offers free computer training, job search assistance, and resume
development.
Serving the Community
At Goodwill, we believe that work plays a crucial role in
the success of every person’s life. Work gives us a sense
of accomplishment, self-esteem, and pride as we relate to
our families and to the community. Through our training
programs, we do more than just help people with disabilites
and disadvantaging conditions find employment. We provide
them with ways to get control of their own lives by providing
a support system to assist them in everyday life skills. We
believe that it is important to enable each person to make a
meaningful contribution to society by helping them to become
working, tax paying citizens. The key is opportunity. This is what Goodwill Industries offers in our
Rehabilitation Programs and Learning Centers.
Work Adjustment Training
School Transition Programs
WAT is designed to help the individual
understand the meaning, necessity, and
demands of our socitey’s work force,
develop a realistic concept as a self-worker,
acquire good work habits, and acquire strong
social skills in forming relationships with
supervisors.
Students from local high schools receive
WAT services that enable them to acquire
school credits and gain work experience
so that they may transition smoothly into
competitive employment upon graduation.
They also receive vocational instruction in
the Goodwill classroom.
Learning Center Services
Goodwill provides computer and office skills training at our Learning Centers. Here the
participants can learn to operate a computer, learn computer software, as well as how to operate
basic office machinery and perform basic office skills. Participants can also receive training
in: resume writing, job searching, interviewing techniques, budgeting, goal setting, employer
expectations, job retention, career exploration, and networking. Job placement assistance is
