JUNE 2014
Goodwill Annual Meeting Held
May 13 at The Wooster Inn
Friends, supporters, staff, and trustees of Goodwill
Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties met on May 13th at
The Wooster Inn Patio for Goodwill’s Annual Meeting. After
social hour, the meeting commenced with an overview of the
agency’s 2013 financial report presented by Trustee Peggy
DeBartolo, indicating that the agency is financially sound.
Following the report, Trustee Patrick Noser led the election
process for the following trustees to serve a second term: Mike
Bogner, Robert Brown, Colby Chamberlin, Leo Miller, Joel
Montgomery, and Jim Weckesser. Mr. Noser then led the
election process for the following officers: Mitch Pertee, Chair;
Peggy DeBartolo, Vice Chair; Sandy Lende, Treasurer; and
Mike Bogner, Secretary. Incoming Chair Mitch Pertee thanked
his predecessor, retiring Chair Stan Popp, for his excellent
leadership throughout the past year, and Stan recognized
retiring trustee Chris Pycraft, thanking him for his years of
service to Goodwill.
President Judy Delaney briefly addressed the group,
thanking the board, staff, and community supporters for their
parts in Goodwill’s ability to serve over 1,700 individuals with
barriers to employment throughout 2013. Delaney then began
the awards ceremony, which recognized a few of these
individuals by name. West Lincoln Way Drive-Thru owners
Ted Rehard and Bret Defibaugh were named the Award of
Merit winners, while F.L. Gilbert & Sons Automotive was
recognized for its support of Goodwill with the Distinguished
Service Award. Kathi and Hobie Bond were named the Chair’s
Volunteers, in recognition of their passion for and commitment to
the agency in a variety of capacities throughout the years.
Earl Hawkins’ grandson Ian Murray represented Mr. Hawkins
in receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, while former
Judy Delaney with Cornerstone Award Winner Marshall Hamilton
Goodwill graduate and employee Marshall Hamilton, who
retired this year after more than forty years with the agency,
received the Cornerstone Award.
The evening ended with the recognition of Graduate of the
Year attorney Brian Krebs; Employee of the Year Pam Cabe,
Millersburg Store Manager; and Carol Hines, who was
recognized for twenty years of service in Goodwill’s
Administrative office. Goodwill appreciates all of its
associates, Board members, supporters, and partners for their
dedication to the Goodwill mission!
Leaving a Legacy
The causes and missions that you choose to support
throughout your lifetime are a part of what makes you a unique
and valued member of the community. Why not ensure
continued support for those causes that are so important to you?
Leaving a legacy can be made possible by arranging for a
planned gift to be made in your name to Goodwill Industries.
This gift can be in the form of a life insurance policy, retirement
account distribution, or a variety of other estate assets.
When leaving a planned gift to Goodwill Industries,
you can be sure that your donation will be used to help
individuals throughout Wayne and Holmes counties find stable,
sustainable employment that will improve not just their own
lives, but the lives of their families.

Consumer Spotlight: Susan Kosunick
This month we highlight
recent Goodwill program
participant Susan Kosunick.
An
unemployed
single
mother of three teenagers
when she came to Goodwill
last fall, Susan and her
children had just spent
several months living at
Wooster ’s Salvation Army
shelter, as well as with
relatives. Susan needed to
provide for her family, and
she had not been successful
in finding a job. While she
had a strong history of work experience in hotel
housekeeping and factory settings, she recognized that her
lack of basic computer skills was holding her back from
finding a job.
When Susan was referred to Goodwill by the Wayne
County Department of Job and Family Services, she was
looking to gain the skills necessary to obtain employment.
Goodwill caseworker Juli Eikleberry worked with Susan to
help identify key obstacles in her life and address them. Juli
enrolled Susan in Goodwill’s comprehensive computer
training program, helped her receive transportation
assistance, provided her with an outfit appropriate for job
interviews (purchased at the Wooster Goodwill store), and
connected her with other local service providers. At STEPS,
Susan was able to receive assistance with her housing
expenses, and ABLE provided Susan with initial help in
preparing for the GED exam, which she hopes to take (after
further preparation) at a later date. Working together, the
various partner agencies helped Susan get her life on a
productive path.
Today, Susan works third shift in the mail room at The
Daily Record, a job she found on her own and that she
thoroughly enjoys. She explained to Goodwill Retention
Specialist Jennifer Slater that she likes going to work and the
sense of pride she feels in being able to provide for her family.
As she says, “Goodwill is a place people can go, to improve
their lives. Goodwill was very helpful to me. I had never used
a computer before, and Goodwill taught me a lot. Now I’m
proud of myself and my kids are proud of me.” Adds Juli,
“Susan is a great example of someone taking responsibility
for their life and choices and making better decisions for
themselves and their family to become self-sufficient.” With
her positive outlook and her strong desire to consistently
provide for her family, Susan is an inspiration to those
around her. Congratulations Susan!

Goodwill Congratulates Tom Police on His Retirement
In March, Goodwill said goodbye to longtime employee Tom
Police, who retired as Vice President of Workforce Development
after being with the agency for nineteen years. Known for his
quick wit and his passion for helping people achieve selfsufficiency, Tom was instrumental in starting Goodwill’s job
skills training program.
According to Carol Hines, who worked with him for nearly
twenty years, “Tom is a character. He was a master at blending
his professional side with his light-hearted side in the workplace,
doing both very well. He was truly dedicated to his staff and the
consumers he served, always putting them first. Tom brought
his love of laughter to the office, and I truly miss him making me
laugh, even when I was the recipient of his jokes!”
Cathy Cain, Work Force Training Specialist for Goodwill,
worked with Tom for over ten years and explained that he was
known throughout the office as a jokester who loved hot air
balloons, woodworking, monkeys and toys. Tom hired Cathy in
the late 1990’s. and she said that during the years that they
worked together, Tom treated his coworkers to many pranks,
including one that involved Tom wearing a gorilla costume to a
formal Goodwill Holiday Party (and acting the part very well!)
According to Cathy, what she misses most about Tom is his
funny clips and silly memos, along with his general motto at the
workplace: “Do good and have fun,” explaining that whenever
employees felt stressed at work, Tom encouraged them to relax
and laugh through the anxiety.
Cameron Maneese, Executive Director of Wayne County’s
Family and Children First Council, collaborated with Tom for
many years through various programs, including the Wayne
County Juvenile Court system’s workforce training program.
Says Cameron, “Over the years, I witnessed that he was
extremely passionate about the people he served. I also learned
that Tom, with his love of live theater and passion for the role
of art in our daily lives, is a bit of a ‘renaissance man.’ I see him
as being an advocate
for children even in his
retirement, helping to
ensure that today’s
children become the
next generation of
competent employees.”
Joseph
Messner,
Clinical Director of
ANAZAO Community
Partners, worked with
Tom for more than
decade through his
work at ANAZAO
(formerly Your Human
Resource Center) and described him as “kind, pleasant, and
knowledgeable.” For years, Goodwill and ANAZAO have
collaborated to provide services to program participants, with
ANAZAO providing both assessment services and appropriate
substance abuse or mental health counseling to Goodwill’s
workforce development clients. According to Joseph, Tom was
instrumental in bringing Goodwill and ANAZAO together to
help Goodwill’s program participants overcome personal
obstacles to become successful. Michelle Kelly, LSW and
counselor for ANAZAO, added, “I was at Goodwill briefly, but
my experiences with Tom were always positive. He made me
feel very welcome, and frequently thanked me for the services
our agency provided. His door was always open, and he would
take time to talk and/or answer questions.”
President Judy Delaney honored Tom during a farewell
luncheon with staff on March 28th, during which she expressed
her appreciation for his “tireless work for many years helping
people in our community become self-sufficient.” Thanks, Tom,
for your dedicated service to Goodwill!
