THE SHOW
ACSF’s Spirit of Brazil provides a venue for Márcia Treidler to produce new work,
collaborate with other outstanding artists from Brazil and the Bay Area, and creatively
explore the innovative artistic elements of capoeira and Brazilian arts through a
large-scale production. Since 1999, ACSF has staged six Spirit of Brazil concert and
workshop series, each with their own theme, choreography, and featured artists.
This year’s production celebrates a mar de tradições (a sea of traditions), and will guide the
audience as we travel from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro in celebration of the roots of the unique
Brazilian traditions of capoeira, maculelê, Afro-Brazilian percussion and samba dance.
I. Arrival in Bahia: Oração ao Senhor do Bonfim (Prayer to Senhor do Bomfim)
(Artistic Director: Mestranda Cigarra)
A symbolic entry of praying and asking for protection, this is a ritual that people of all
religious beliefs participate in at the Church of Senhor do Bonfim. Every year, thousands of
people make a pilgrimage to Salvador, Bahia, for this magical moment.
II. Saudação aos Orixas (Artistic Director: Gamo da Paz)
As a tribute to the arts to be presented, Master Afro-Brazilian Percussionist Gamo da Paz
will bless the performance with traditional Candomblé drumming.
III. Maculelê (Artistic Director: Mestranda Cigarra)
Maculelê is a traditional Afro-Brazilian folk dance performed with sticks and machetes,
with movements that imitate the motions of chopping sugarcane. The performers
demonstrate an original maculelê piece created by Mestranda Cigarra, who is known for
her unique and dynamic choreographies.
IV. Berimbau Orchestra (Artistic Director: Mestranda Cigarra)
The berimbau, a traditional African instrument, inspires and guides the capoeirista, indicates
how the players should move their bodies, and dictates the rules of each game. For most of
the rhythms performed, Mestre Camisa was the one who developed the different functions
for each type of berimbau, thereby creating a more harmonious presentation . The three types
of berimbau are the “gunga” (the bass), the “medio” (the harmony), and the “viola”
(free variations in high-pitched notes).
V. Capoeira Duets (Artistic Director: Mestranda Cigarra)
Five pairs of capoeiristas will perform short duets, each demonstrating the characteristics
of a different berimbau rhythm.
Angola - This style shows the roots of capoeira, and traditionally involves a “chamada” in
which the players walk together back and forth to restart the game or show who is in charge.
Benguela - The goal of this game is to use “malicia” (cunning), and the players constantly
weave in, under, and around each other. Mestre Camisa, the founder of ABADA Capoeira,
created this game to accompany the Benguela rhythm in the 1990’s.
Iuna - In the game of Iuna, which is named after a bird, the players show off the beauty,
lightness and creativity of their movements while dialoguing with each other.
Amazonas - This is a fun, spontaneous, and artistic game in which the players characterize
movements of different animals. This game was also developed by Mestre Camisa in the 1990’s.
São Bento Grande da Regional - This game, which highlights the martial art aspect of
capoeira, requires fast thinking and even faster reactions. The players engage in counterattacks and take-downs without disrupting the flow and enjoyment of the game.
VI. Capoeira (Artistic Director: Mestranda Cigarra)
Capoeira was developed by slaves brought to Brazil through their shared customs, rituals,
and fighting techniques. It was born as an expression of resistance and resilience. The
slaves used capoeira to fight for freedom and resist capture, concealing its combative
purpose through music and dance. Today, capoeira is a means of empowerment and a
forum for social and cultural exchange. It has evolved into an internationally respected art
of grace and strength that combines ritual, self-defense, acrobatics, and music.
Here, the performers demonstrate capoeira in its raw, unadulterated form – a spontaneous
and complex dialogue driven by instruments playing, voices singing, and hands clapping.
VII. Homage to Mestre Prego & Mestre Neguinho do Samba, the Masters of
Afro-Brazilian Music – Performed by Quimbanda (Artistic Director: Gamo da Paz)
This original piece was composed by Gamo da Paz to honor and thank Mestre Prego
and Mestre Neguinho do Samba, the creators of the Samba-Reggae and Afro-Brazilian
rhythms. Here, we pay tribute to the men who gave us the foundation to develop other
rhythms with roots in this contagious and amazing music. Today, these rhythms and their
offshoots are immensely popular throughout the world.
VIII. Spirit of Carnaval – Performed by Sambaxé (Artistic Directors: Raffaella Falchi & Alfie Macias)
This piece is a traditional representation of the batucada percussion and Samba no Pé
dance. This style of music and dance originates from Rio de Janeiro, and is most commonly seen
during the Carnaval parade, which is about celebrating life and letting go of one’s inhibitions. IX. Body Piece (Artistic Director: Mestranda Cigarra in collaboration with Tania Santiago)
Performed to the Samba Reggae percussion rhythm, the body piece is a contemporary
interpretation of the music and movements of capoeira. Mestranda Cigarra and the ACSF
Performance Troupe premiered the first body piece in their 2005 Spirit of Brazil performance,
offering audiences a modern approach to viewing capoeira.
X. Back to Bahia (Finale)
The finale brings everyone back to Bahia together in a Traditional Brazilian Celebration. The
atmosphere is calm as we celebrate all we have, all we are, and all we can become. Whether
they come from our own cultures or not, these traditions are a reference point that have
the power to make us stronger. We have gotten in touch with the past, come to terms with
the present, and are looking towards a better future, all the while maintaining and honoring
our traditions.
Marcia Treidler “Mestranda Cigarra”
Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Mestranda
Cigarra is the founder and artistic director of ABADÁCapoeira San Francisco (ACSF). She is one of the
highest-ranking capoeiristas out of the more than
40,000 international ABADÁ-Capoeira members
and the first female student of Mestre Camisa to be
awarded the rank “Mestranda”, a title shared with
some of the world’s top practitioners.
Mestranda Cigarra began studying capoeira in 1982 under the world-renowned
Mestre Camisa. In 1987, she began to teach classes for street children Rio de Janeiro.
In 1991, Mestranda Cigarra moved to the U.S. and, in 1997, was granted legal
permanent residency as an “Alien with Extraordinary Abilities.” That same year,
she founded the ACSF Brazilian Arts Center, located in San Francisco’s Mission District. The center offers classes for youth and adults in capoeira, percussion and Portuguese language. Mestranda Cigarra’s work reflects her commitment to the preservation and expansion of an art form that has a
invaluable impact on our community’s cultural standing. A 30-year veteran student of Mestre Camisa, Mestranda Cigarra maintains
international recognition for her accomplishments in the field and teaches
regularly throughout Brazil, the North America, Europe, and Asia.
Her outstanding achievements make her a highly sought-after teacher, an inspirational leader, and an important role model. In 2013, she will become
Mestre Camisa’s first female student to receive the title of “Mestre,” making
her only one of six people to hold that title.
Jennifer Wash “Instrutora Sereia”
Instrutora Sereia is ACSF’s Executive Director and founder
of ABADÁ- Capoeira Boston.
She began training capoeira in 1994 with Mestranda
Cigarra, and competed in the Jogos Mundiais in Brazil
in 1999 (2nd place Female), 2001 (3rd place Female),
2003 (3rd place Female, 1st place Green/Purple, 3rd
place Foreign Competitor), 2005 (3rd place Female),
2007 and 2009. She received her title of Instrutora in 2003 and her
purple-brown cord in 2007, and has performed in all five
past Spirit of Brazil shows.
Anderson Freire de Barros “Professor Mobília”
Born in 1975, Professor Mobília began training capoeira
at the age of seven in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. He
went on to study capoeira under Mestre Cobra (Professor
Cobra at the time), who is still his teacher to this day.
When he was 18, Professor Mobília began to professionalize
his capoeira by studying pedagogy, physical education, and
attending national and international seminars.
He has competed in and judged numerous capoeira
competitions, and he has extensive experience participating
in live performances, theater pieces, television shows, and cultural exhibitions.
Professor Mobília currently teaches classes in social projects, schools, cultural
centers, gymnasiums, and universities. Because capoeira helped him overcome
the challenges he faced a child, including coping with a physical disability, he
believes in the power of capoeira as an art that can motivate and build
self-esteem in those who practice it. Ezequiel Alves dos Reis “Professor Goma”
Professor Goma was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In
1986, at the age of twelve, he moved to Brasília and
saw his first capoeira “roda.” The following year, he
began taking capoeira classes in the Federal District
of Brasília.
When he was seventeen years old, he moved to
Goiânia, where he started taking classes wtih Mestre
Charm. His first trip outside Brazil was in 2004, when he went
to the European Games (Jogos Europeos) and was
invited to go to Switzerland. In 2005, he moved to Switzerland, where he is upholding the philosophy and
style of ABADÁ-Capoeira by teaching students of all ages, holding performances,
and giving talks at schools.
In addition to having participated in numerous competitions, he is a well-known
and respected teacher and performer. Yara Cordeiro “Professora Yara”
Professora Yara holds a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology
and physical education and has been a physical education
teacher for over ten years. She has Graduate Degrees in
Sports Psychology and in Capoeira from the University of
Brasília and a Master’s Degree in Psychology from the
Brasília Catholic University.
Professora Yara has consistently directed her studies
towards understanding the unexplored aspects of the
relationship between capoeira and sports psychology. This
has led to the publication of three books: Capoeira, Identidade e Adolescência
(Capoeira, Identity and Adolescence), Capoeira e Desenvolvimento (Capoeira and
Development) and Capoeira e Auto-Estima (Capoeira and Self-Esteem), the latter
now in its second edition. Besides her academic work in capoeira, Professora Yara has been a capoeirista
for over twenty-five years and a teacher for more than twelve. She has traveled
around the world showing capoeira, teaching and giving lectures. She also
competed for seven years in Brazil, earning prestigious titles including 1st Place
Female in the Brazilian Nationals and 4th Place Female in the International Games,
among others.
Gamo da Paz
Gamo Da Paz was born in Salvador, Bahia and raised in the
lineage of the Candomblé tradition of the Ketu Nation.
As a Master Drummer from the house of Gantois, Gamo
is one of the few drummers who plays ceremonial and
healing rhythms in the most renowned religious houses
in Brazil and internationally.
Founder of Group QUIMBANDA, present on Carnaval SF
for more them 6 years.
Raffaella Falchi
Raffaella Falchi received her B.A. in Psychology with a Minor in Art from UC
Berkeley in 2001 and a Masters of Architecture from CCA in 2007. She has been
dancing professionally since 1998 and began teaching Brazilian dance in 2003.

dance both locally and in Brazil, and has performed professionally with numerous
Brazilian dance companies in the Bay Area, Europe, and Brazil.
In 2004, she co-founded Sambamora Dance Company and in 2010 started her
own dance company, Sambaxé. She has appeared in the San Francisco Carnaval
Ball and numerous San Francisco Carnaval Parades. As the Founder and Artistic Director of Sambaxé, Raffaella teaches Brazilian dance
classes in several San Francisco dance studios including ODC/Rhythm & Motion
and Dance Mission. She divides her time between working as a program director
for Out of Site Youth Arts Center, a San Francisco non-profit, and teaching.
Alfie Macias
Alfie Macias has been studying and performing a variety of percussion genres for
the last 15 years. He is the founder of Bateria Blocura, a performance-based
percussion ensemble that plays for dance classes at Dance Mission and ODC as
well as many national and international performances. He is a multi-talented
musical artist who is well known as both a traditional percussionist and a world
music deejay.
For the past 8 years, Alfie has been teaching music classes at several local elementary
schools through San Francisco Arts Education Project. He also develops curriculum
and teaches performance-based percussion and music production classes to high
school students through the Out of Site Youth Arts Center. He is passionate about
