Worship Service October 4, 2015 “To all those who enter here, be thoughtful, be silent, be reverent. Before the service, speak to God. During the service, let God speak to you. After the service, speak to others.” 9:00 AM 11:00 AM Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III Prelude 9:00 AM 11:00 AM James Davis, Jr., Organist Call to Worship Leader: Have you not known? Have you not heard? Our God is the everlasting God, creator of the ends of the earth. People: Our God does not grow faint or weary, and has understanding that is unsearchable. Leader: Our God gives power to the faint and strength to the weak. People: Even the young will faint and grow weary, and fall exhausted. Leader: But there is a promise to those who wait on God. People: Our strength shall be renewed. We shall mount up with wings like eagles. We shall run and not be weary. We shall walk and not faint. All: Teach us, dear God, how to wait. Amen. Campaign is well underway. We are very grateful to the membership for their support of our effort to build a $12MM educational center. Following our initial appeal, more than 40% of our members responded to the plea to make a supporting pledge. We are making progress toward the achievement of our goal to raise $3mm in 24 months. Thanks to your generous support we are one-third of the way there. Heed the Call – Make Your Pledge Today! 100% Member Participation Requested For those who have not made a pledge, there is no time like the present. Our goal is to attain 100% participation from our members. Pledge cards are available in the church elevator lobby and at Abyssinian.org via the “AbyWEST” icon. Your completed pledge card can be left at the front desk in the Trustee mailbox. With your help our goal to raise $3mm in 24 months will be realized. Thank you for your continued support! Dedicated to “the Worship of God and the Service of Humanity”… MINISTRY EVENTS The Abyssinian Medical Ministry will meet following today’s 9:00 AM worship service in the Medical Room. The Sister-to-Sister Book Ministry is currently reading Gil Scott-Heron’s memoir, "The Last Holiday.” The Ministry meets next on Saturday, October 10th, 10:00 AM in The Fellowship Hall. The Mattie Fletcher Powell–Satellite Ministry sponsors a Fall & Winter Clothing Drive. For the entire month of October (Oct. 1-31), MFP-Satellite Ministry will collect gently used clothing to benefit children of Abyssinian House Shelter. Donations are greatly appreciated and should be placed in designated boxes in Vestry and around Abyssinian church. According to several versions, Emmett whistled at a white woman and others say he grabbed her hand and asked for a date; other reports indicate that all he said was "bye, baby" as he left the store. Myths, lies and misinformation abound. This play explores the impact of the brutal murder of Emmett Till and the powerful ripples of change that transformed America but also introduces a young boy whose vibrant personality and charismatic disposition always left a wrinkle in your forehead and a smile on your face, and that is what will be forever missed.
