Description of the Activities
Day 1 – 14th March 2016
The Swedish delegates arrived at the Airport of Oporto on the afternoon of the 14th of
March.
The colleagues from ADAI, Luis Ribeiro and Ricardo Oliveira went to receive them at the
airport. The group travelled in a rental car from the airport of Oporto to the Hotel D. Luis
in Coimbra where they arrived at 19 hours approximately.
Professor Viegas met the Swedish colleagues at the Hotel and had a brief meeting to
finalize the plan of the program during the dinner.
David Caballero the delegate from Spain travelled in his car from Madrid and arrived at
the hotel in the early morning.

On this day, a meeting session was held during all day, at the Hotel with technicians of
the different Institutions responsible for fire management in Portugal and with ADAI
team.
In this session ADAI presented its recent achievements in Forest fire research, then Rui
Almeida from ICNF, presented the work conducted by the Institute for the Conservation
of Nature and Forests, on Forest fire prevention. The representative of the Military
Policy – GNR/GIPS – Pedro Ribeiro, made a presentation about the role of this Police in
fire prevention and suppression. In the beginning of the afternoon, Miguel Cruz, from
the National Authority for Civil Protection presented the Firefighting System in Portugal
followed by a presentation of the representative of the Portuguese Institute of Sea and
Atmosphere on the meteorological risk assessment in Portugal.
Luis Ribeiro and Ricardo Oliveira presented the work conducted by ADAI in the Wildland
Urban Interface and Domingos Viegas on Fire safety and accidents investigation.

During the morning of the 16th visits were made to ADAI Laboratories, to the Laboratory
of Industrial Aerodynamics (LAI) in Coimbra where the experimental work of the
different lines of research is conducted and to the Laboratory of Forest Fire Research
(LEIF) in Lousã where most of the experimental research on forest fires in undertaken.
The delegates had the opportunity to see the facilities and the experimental work that
is being performed in these two laboratories.

Then the delegates visited the nearby Training Centre of the Fire Brigade School in the
Airfield of Lousã where a presentation was made on the training plan of the firefighters
and also to the Aerial Means Centre of Lousã.

The delegates went then to Castanheira de Pera where they were received at the Fire
Brigade of C. Pera. From there the Group went in two vehicles of the firefighters to the
field area of Gestosa where ADAI conducts the experimental fires to analyse fire
behaviour propagation.

Day 4 – 17th March 2016

The 17th of March was dedicated to visit the areas of the large fires that occurred in
Portugal in 2013. After a brief welcome at the Fire Station of the Volunteer Firefighters
of Campo de Besteiros and of a presentation by Domingos Viegas on the propagation
chronology of the fires of 2013, the group proceeded to the trip to the Caramulo region.

The program of this day ended with a visit to Viseu District Commander of Relief

The morning of the last day of this Mission, day 18 th, consisted in a visit to the facilities
of the Coimbra District Commander Center and to the facilities of Coimbra Headquarters
of the Municipality Fire Brigade and Civil Protection.

During the afternoon a Session with presentations of the work conducted by the Swedish and
Spanish colleagues was held at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of
Coimbra. A general discussion on the development of the Exchange Action and of future lines of
cooperation between both Countries were discussed.
On the following day, 19th of March, the delegates departed to their respective Countries.
