The Faculty of Economics (FEUC) http://www.uc.pt/en/feuc/apresentacao , created in 1972, is one of the eight faculties of the
University of Coimbra, dating from 1290, one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest in Portugal.
Its first courses in Economics, launched in the 1973-74 academic year, were followed by three other first degrees, all four
currently available: Sociology, Management, and International Relations.
FEUC has approximately 2,500 students, 130 teaching staff and 40 administrative staff. These, combined with excellent
facilities, offer a very high quality educational service in an environment that is both very friendly, and academically
stimulating.
How to get to here:
From Lisbon airport
By bus:
You can take either Aeroshuttle (CARRIS Nº96) (http://www.carris.pt/en/bus/96/
ascendente/default/) or a taxi (7-9 €) to the Sete Rios bus terminal. From the terminal, there are frequent Rede Expressos
coach services to Coimbra which take about 2,5 hours (13 €): http://www.rede-expressos.pt/default.aspx
The coach station in Coimbra (Estação Rodoviária RBL) is situated close to the city centre and is a 10 minutes taxi ride to the
conference location, and a good 10-15 minutes walk to the city centre.
By train:
You can take either Aeroshuttle (CARRIS Nº96) or a taxi (7 €) to Gare/Estação Oriente railway station. Trains run every hour
from 6 am to 9 pm. The fastest service is provided by the Alfa Pendular express trains (22,5 Euros), which take 1h34m to
Coimbra-B station, followed by Intercidades (inter-city service) (19 €), most taking 1h50m to the same
station. http://www.cp.pt/StaticFiles/CP/Imagens/PDF/Passageiros/horarios/longo_curso/ap_ic.pdf
From Oporto airport
The Francisco Sa Carneiro airport in Oporto is 11 km away from the city, so getting a taxi from there to the railway station is
quite expensive (20-25 €, with 20 per cent surcharge in the evenings and weekends). The easiest and less costly way will be to
take the Metro. The direction to it is signposted throughout the aiport, so just follow the signs and take Line E (Violeta) from
the airport to the Campanhã railway station. Metro trains run about every 20 minutes from early morning until after midnight.
That will take about 32 minutes and cost 2,20 € - a Z4 (zone four) ticket.
Three types of train services are available from the Campanhã railway station: Alfa Pendular service (fastest yet most
expensive) the Intercidades and regional trains. The Alfa trains run almost every hour and takes an hour to get to Coimbra-B.
The second class single fare is 16,5 €. Intercidades takes slightly more than an hour and cost 13 €. The regional train service,
which includes a timed transfer at Aveiro, takes 2 hours but runs directly to the downtown Coimbra-A station and costs 7,95
Euros. For the timetables, go to http://www.cp.pt/StaticFiles/CP/Imagens/PDF/Passageiros/horarios/longo_curso/ap_ic.pdf
and http://www.cp.pt/StaticFiles/CP/Imagens/PDF/Passageiros/horarios/regional/coimbra_porto_coimbra.pdf
Please note Alfa Pendular and Intercidades run to the Coimbra-B station, which is located somewhat far from the city centre,
hotels and the University (a 10-15 minutes taxi ride away). So, if you wish to get to the centre by train, you will have to get off
the train at Coimbra-B station and take a regional train (free of charge provided you kept your AP or IC train ticket, runs every
15-20 minutes) from Coimbra–B to Coimbra-A. The Coimbra-A railway station is situated right in the centre of Coimbra.
Centre for Social Studies
The Centre for Social Studies (CES), founded in 1978 at the Faculty of Economics, University of Coimbra, is a scientific
institution devoted to research and advanced training in the area of the social sciences and humanities. Headed since then by
Professor Boaventura de Sousa Santos, CES now numbers 122 researchers, 48 associate researchers, 53 post-doctoral
researchers and 64 junior researchers. Many of these researchers work on a full time basis at the Centre. Remaining members
combine research with lecturing (the vast majority at the Faculty of Economics, the Facultys of Humanities and the Faculty of
Science and Technology) or with other professional activities. The team of researchers at CES include sociologists, economists,
jurists, anthropologists, historians, specialists in the areas of education, literature, culture and international relations,
geographers, architects, engineers, biologists and medical doctors. The Centre for Social Studies is member of the Institute for
Interdisciplinary Research of the University of Coimbra (IIIUC).
Over the past years, CES has seen its scientific activity expand to a significant degree. This can be noted in its increased number
of researchers, in its academic progression, in the growth of research projects involving CES researchers, in the broadening of
international cooperation networks, in activities carried out in cooperation with the outside sphere and in the vitality of its
main instruments for scientific dissemination.
The research projects and international scientific networks in which its researchers have participated over the past decade
confirm the dynamism of the Centre for Social Studies, which, in 1997 and in 1999, and more recently in 2005 and 2010,
received recognition of its scientific merit when it was evaluated as Excellent (the highest classification) by an international
panel, within the framework of the Evaluation Process for Research Units of the Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher
Education. In February 2002, CES was awarded the status of Associate Laboratory by the Ministry for Science, on the basis of
two central premises: firstly, its proven ability to develop innovative research on Portuguese society in its different aspects, as
well as on current transformations at the international level, with special emphasis on semi-peripheric societies and those of
the Southern hemisphere, especially the Portuguese-speaking countries; secondly, the Centre’s involvement in issues of public
interest, notably public policies and the new forms of regulation, the relation between scientific knowledge and citizen
participation, and the legal system and the reform of the administering of justice.
The Centre for Social Studies is located in Alta de Coimbra, close to the Schools of Science and Technology, Medicine, Arts and
Humanities and Law and to the University’s Main Library.
How to get to CES
From outside Coimbra
By car
Take the Coimbra Sul exit on A1 and drive towards Coimbra. After crossing the bridge over the River Mondego, take the first
exit to Coimbra Centro. A further 200 metres ahead you will come to a roundabout on Av. Fernão de Magalhães. Turn left.
Drive for a further 200 metres until you reach the traffic lights. Turn sharply right. You are now in Rua da Figueira da Foz. Drive
200m and turn left into Rua de Aveiro (uphill). A further 500m and at the top of Rua de Aveiro, turn right into Rua Infante D.
Henrique. Drive a further 300m and turn right into Rua de Saragoça (downhill). Drive down Rua de Saragoça (300m) and Rua da
Manutenção Militar (100m), straight ahead until you come to the traffic lights. At this point turn left into Avenida Sá da
Bandeira (uphill). Drive up this avenue (500m) and when you reach Praça da República (immediately after Teatro Académico
Gil Vicente, to your right), turn right into Rua Oliveira Matos (200m) Drive straight ahead, passing along Rua Castro Matoso
(200m) until you reach a roundabout (Praça João Paulo II, with a statue of the Pope). Turn right into Calçada Martim de Freitas
(the São Sebastião Aqueduct will be on your left) At the top of this Calçada you will reach Praça Dom Dinis, close to CES.
By train
Coimbra has two railway stations: Coimbra A - Estação Nova and Coimbra B - Estação Velha. Trains arrive at Coimbra B, and
you can take the connecting train to Coimbra A (your train ticket covers this short journey). This is your best choice if you wish
to get to the town centre. If you wish to come straight to CES, we suggest you take a taxi from the station.
