YEAR 9 DOCKLANDS TRIP
Year 9 Geography students had a fantastic
trip to London’s Docklands on 17 and 18
January. Both trips were organised by Mr
Knight. He said ‘The two trips were very
successful and members of the public
complimented our students on their great
behaviour and maturity. Students explored
the Canary Wharf area on foot and visited
the Museum of London Docklands in the
morning. They then visited the Olympic
building site and Stratford Westfield
shopping centre to support the unit of work
they are about to carry out on Urban
Regeneration. Thanks to Mrs Johns, Mrs
Impey, Mrs Dace, Mr Dudmish and Mr Heale
for their help in running the two days.’
ART TRIP TO KEW GARDENS
On the 20th January the Year 10 GCSE Art
students visited Kew Gardens. The trip

GIRLS SPORT UPDATE
FROM MISS ROONEY:
Netball: ‘A good start to the season with
all year groups winning their league
games against Appleton, Cornelius and
Deanes. The year 7s continue to get better
and better, scoring as many as 50 goals
within 1 game. They are the only year
group to remain in the Essex Cup and
currently are top of their group. We are
confident that, with continued hard work
and good commitment to training, this
team will go on to achieve great things,
leaving a legacy for those behind to follow.
The Under 14 team (year 8 and 9) missed
out on the quarter finals of the Essex cup
to Westcliff but the game was very close.
The team remain in the South East Essex
Cup, beating King John (a first for this year
group) by 27 goals to 5. The Under 16s
also just missed out, losing to Deanes by 7
goals.’
Basketball: ‘A relatively new sport to the
girls’ extracurricular timetable but
something that has proven to be popular!
Yr 7, 8 and 9 entered the Essex Cup for
the first time and found it challenging, but
still enjoyable. Year 7 had great success
beating teams such as Shoebury,
Greensward and Great Baddow. With
some tough games to come, the team look
hopeful to win the Essex Cup competition.
A first for FitzWimarc girls!’
Gymnastics: ‘A quiet start that is set to be
busy in February. Good luck to all those
competing in the District competition on
the 24 of January and the Carita House
Competition on the 4 of February. The first
round of East England is set for 1 March.
The team have been working hard under
the supervision of Miss Kelly and Mrs
Cowley and look promising.’
Cross Country: ‘Record numbers for the
girls this year at Districts with red
FitzWimarc vests dominating the front of
the race! Year 7 A/B and C teams all came
first, Years 8/9 A and B teams came a
close second, whilst the C team came 1st.
In the Senior event both A and B teams
won. As a result many of the FitzWimarc
girls were selected to represent the District
Cross Country team.’
Swimming: ‘All teams successfully
qualified for the District Swim Final which
is due to be held on Wednesday 25
January. Good Luck Everyone!’

YEAR 9s HATE CRIME!
It was a clean sweep for our Year 9s as 3 pupils won 1st,
2nd and 3rd prize in The Rochford District Hate Crime competition! Miss Canham said, ‘We are thrilled
that all 3 winners are Year 9 pupils at FitzWimarc. I was really impressed with the entries from my year
group as they all worked hard towards this competition and I am very proud of their efforts. Charity,
Katie and Holly are a credit to the school and so typical of the FitzWimarc student, putting a lot of
thought into their entries to get an important message across to others of their own age. They win
Amazon vouchers of £50, £25 and £10 and I hope they enjoy spending them!’ Charity won 1st prize
and said, ‘My poster said Hate or be a Mate! I was really shocked when I received a call to tell me I
had won, but I’m also very pleased’ Katie came 2nd with her Cyber Bullying poster. She said, ‘People

good to see that

that help is out

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY - On 27 January Mrs Hewitt,
along with Head Boy, Sam Neal and Deputy Head Girl, Aafreen Alam,
attended this event that had the theme ’Speak Up, Speak Out’. Mrs
Hewitt said, ’Holocaust Memorial Day is the anniversary of the liberation
of Auschwitz by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945. We heard a very
moving account given by Otto Deutsch of his experiences as a
Kindertransport Refugee. Sam and Aafreen both spoke very well and
were a credit to The FitzWimarc School.’

BOYS SPORT UPDATE FROM MR N. COWLEY
Football: ‘It’s been a difficult season for Year 7s. However, the attitude
and the work ethic has been good. The A team have played 8 matches so
far and the B team also enjoyed their matches. Year 8 won 5 out of 6
Castle Point and Rochford League matches and are also still in 2 Cup
competitions. They were, unfortunately, knocked out of the Essex Cup in
the quarter-final. Year 9s won 4 out of 5 CPR League matches, but were
knocked out of the District Cup by Greensward. The boys are still in the
SEE Cup after defeating Westcliff in the 1st round. Year 10 played 2
league matches and won both! They were knocked out of the District Cup
by Castle View but avenged this defeat by beating them in the SEE Cup.
The County Cup was the other competition in which the boys recorded 2
wins but a defeat against Chelmer ended their run. Yr11 boys played 5
league matches and won 2. The District and Regional cup runs also
ended in narrow defeats against Sweyne Park. More football news after
half-term!’
Rugby: ‘Year 7s had a really impressive term and have already won
friendly matches. They took part in their first tournament where they were
runners-up. Year 8s reached the quarter-final of the Essex Cup. Year 9
reached the semi-final of the Essex Cup and will hopefully emulate their
success last year. Year 10s also reached the semis of the Essex Cup,
beating Saffron Waldon. Year 11, unfortunately, went out of the County
Cup to Campion but will be looking to win the District title before they
leave!’
Basketball: ‘All 5 teams from Year 7-11 reached the quarter-final stage of
the Essex Cup. Year 8s and 11s deserve recognition for reaching the
semi-final stage already. Year 8,9,10 and 11 also won their District
matches.
Swimming: ‘In the CPR Championships, our boys were overall winners!’
Cross Country: ‘Both boys teams qualified for the Regional National Cup
Championships!’

TYMS CHARITY FRIDAY
On 27 January it was the turn of Tyms House to
organise fundraising events in aid of The Bobby
Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK, a charity
which raises money for research into bowel cancer.
Miss Kruse is Head of Tyms and co-ordinated events
for both staff and pupils to enjoy, whilst raising
money for this worthwhile cause.
This event was covered by Fitz Focus Reporter Luke Tonge and
photographer Charles Thompson of 8D3.
The famous image of Bobby
Moore holding the Jules Rimet
trophy aloft at Wembley Stadium
in 1966 is one that has become
ingrained in every football fan's
memory.

The Staff Football Match - Luke said, ‘At
1.30pm hundreds of students gathered round the
Sports Hall border to watch Staff v Staff! From
start to finish the hall was really noisy, filled with
screams of excitement! It was so packed that
when you got a place to sit or stand, you were
stuck there for the 30 minutes! The game was
very good, especially Mr Sexton who tripped up
Mrs Bennett and also went for the ball with Mr
Deller, and they were both floored! At the end of
the mach Mrs Watkins said it had been great fun
and staff all had a very good game!’
Tyms Charity Friday
- Luke said, ‘In the
school’s main hall there were lots of fund raising
activities including a football themed face paint,
quizzes and lots of prizes to be won! The centre of attention was a crazy Karaoke which
Charlotte Felton in 8C1 kicked off with an Adele track. Yet again, hundred of students gathered in
the hall to explore the activities. It was a really enjoyable day as I’m sure
everyone will agree. We are still counting the money up but hope to

YEAR 11 FITZ IN WELL AT WORK!
Our Year 11 students went out into the world of work for two weeks in
December. They had a fantastic opportunity to
experience ‘the real world’ - here’s what some
of them thought about it….
Rebecca Thornton
was placed with
Rayleigh Pets.
Rebecca said,
‘I enjoyed seeing a
different environment
to school. It made me
realise what a hard
day’s work is! It has
helped me plan for
the future.’
Ashley Hill was
placed with French
Car-Nection.
Shannen Young was placed
with Sainsbury’s.
Shannen said, ‘The work was
repetitive but I was treated as
part of the team. I would
definitely apply for part time work
there. I was able to develop my
communication skills alongside
staff and by helping customers.’
Ashley said, ‘I was busy
all day and it was good
fun. I liked the people I
worked with.’
Connor
Killick
was placed with
Avionicare.
Connor said, ‘It was
brilliant, fun and
worthwhile. I did
electronics,
soldering and
fixed
instruments. It
was a good
placement for an
engineering
student.’
Mrs Butcher is responsible for
placing all Year 11s with an
employer and monitors their
progress over the two week period.
She said, ’Again, our students
perf or me d well dur ing t heir
placements gaining worthwhile
experiences in the workplace. This
collaboration between our school
and employers is valued. It is a
great disappointment that
government funding for pre-16 work
experience has been withdrawn and
that the onus is now entirely on the
school to fund this useful venture.’
