T
he Servus Heritage Festival is one of
the most important outreach opportunities for the Edmonton Jewish Community. This year was no different, as
more than 350,000 people visited the
Festival site over the August long weekend. The culmination of many months of
hard work from volunteers and staff, the
Israel Pavilion celebrated Israeli and Jewish culture, while educating the broader
public too! Visitors had opportunities to
take in cultural displays including performances of classical and modern Israeli
dance from the Aviv Dancers, as well as
visual exhibits in the cultural tent that
showed many aspects of Israeli culture
and history. These included a recreated
Israeli marketplace, an oasis in the Negev
desert, an archaeological dig, as well as
a Western Wall segment were visitors

n August 24th, we were delighted
to host His Excellency Ambassador
Rafael Barak, the new Israeli Ambassador to Canada. Ambassador Barak and
his wife, Miriam, came to Canada last
November, and this was their first visit
to Alberta.
A dinner for community leadership
was held at the Beth Israel Synagogue, at
which Ambassador and Mrs. Barak were
the guests of honour. After a wonderful
kosher dinner catered by Eddie and Susan
Yedgarova, Ambassador Barak addressed
the community. About 150 community
members attended to hear Ambassador
Barak speak about his goals and vision
for his current posting to Canada.
Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, to
parents who emigrated from Kishinev,
Ambassador Barak made Aliyah to Israel
at the age of 18 as a part of a youth group
who went to help during the Six-Day War.
Since then, he has never looked back, and

ome might equate an intern to a volunteer in our new millennial lexicon.
There are differences however- an intern
gains experience while a volunteer both
gains and gives of their experience. One
you do for your future and the other you do
for the future of others. One commonality
they share is both are unpaid positions.
In today’s world, unpaid internships
have an even worse connotation as some
view the intern as being taken advantage
of, which they often are. Working as a volunteer is by definition unpaid, yet is seen as
a mitzvah. So how does one untangle this
other difference between being an intern
and a volunteer? Personally, I believe that
as a volunteer, doing something for the
community, as my parents showed me, is
a principle that I want to pass-down to my

nother year is about to begin, but we
have been hard at work here at the
Federation offices over the summer. As
you will see from this issue of HaKol,
our work never ceases. Especially this
summer, with the situation in Israel, we
were all on the edge of our seats every
day with news of Operation Protective
Edge. It started with a special service
for the three abducted Israeli teenagers

sell them on, try as we might, is the continuation of our traditions, beliefs, values
and community. Rather, we should not try
to force these things we find meaningful
and worthwhile. Surprisingly, the best way
to show and teach value in what we hold
dear is the simplest method: If we demonstrate what is important to us, they will
incorporate it.
So why all the preamble you might ask?
Perhaps at this time of personal reflection,
as we approach the High Holidays and as I
get closer to the end of my three-year term
as Federation President—I have a message
to share from my bimah:
Just volunteer—whether it be as a
Jewish Federation Board member or a
UJA canvasser, at your kid’s school, your
Synagogue, or for organizations that support the State of Israel, there is always work
to be done. The rewards are immeasurable,
the work is fulfilling and in 2014 – volunteerism is a principle that should be treasured, valued and demonstrated to those
around us. I know I speak from countless
years of experience!
So, as we enter the High Holidays, I would
like to wish everyone in our Edmonton
Jewish community a Chag Sameach, may
you have a year overflowing with sweetness
and a good dose of volunteering!

PJ Library Prepares for a New Programming Year!
BY DANI URETSKY
W
e are so excited for PJ Library this
year! I would like to start off by welcoming our new committee members,
Michelle Ausfresser, Talya Shafir, Marnie
Pellet, Rachel Marcus, and our new committee chair, Ellie Lanciano. We have
been busy meeting and planning for an
amazing year of PJ Programs.
On September 14th, 2014 we held our
first program of the year, the theme was
Rosh Hashana. It was filled with crafts,
songs, stories, and snacks. The kids got to
put their new year’s wishes on a balloon
and release them into the air for them to
come true. Everyone enjoyed apples and
honey too, of course!
We are holding PJ Library programs on a
monthly basis, so please check the Federation
Community Calendar for the locations and
dates at www.jewishedmonton.org

tions of Canada - UIA. We should all be
very proud of ourselves. Thankfully the
situation has quieted down, but the work
is ongoing.
In August, we had a very successful
Heritage Days event, which fortunately
was well-attended and without incident.
Thanks go to Pavilion Chair Christina
Reboh and her team, including Joey
Tappenden, our Director of Community
Relations, who leads the staff efforts for
the event, to Susan and Eddie Yedgarova
who head up the food side, and to the Aviv
Dancers who provide wonderful entertainment for the event. And of course,
the pavilion volunteers: without them,
we could not host this event. Thanks to
the efforts of all these team members,
we again won First Place for our cultural
display and Honourable Mention for our
entertainment. Plans are already underway for next year’s event, which will be
even better!
After Heritage Days, we were honoured with a visit from His Excellency
Rafael Barak, the new Israeli Ambassador
to Canada, and his wife, who had not
visited Edmonton before. He graced us
with his presence at a lovely dinner
for Jewish Community leadership at the
Beth Israel, and then spoke to the entire
community for about an hour about
what is happening in Israel, his efforts
to promote business and research ties
between Canada and Israel, and about
his personal experiences as a diplomat for
Israel. We are fortunate that Mr. Barak
will be back in our city on October 23rd
for the opening of an Israeli Art exhibit,
A Moving Image, at the Art Gallery of
Alberta, which is coming to us straight
from the National Gallery in Ottawa. I
hope that you will all be able to see this
exhibit while it is in town. The exhibit
is the recipient of funding from many
members of our community, including the Edmonton Jewish Community
Charitable Foundation, which recently
had its annual grant distribution. The

Partner Agency Spotlight: Jewish Family Services
BY LARRY DERKACH
F
or an organization that is so involved
in our community, Jewish Family
Services has such a low profile that
most people know very little about it.
Additonally, some of the impressions out
there are plain out-of-date or incorrect.
Here are some myth-busters you may
find surprising:
“JFS doesn’t serve many Jews”
JFS has earned a stellar reputation in
the wider community, particularly with
the large Integrity Counselling and the
Edmonton Healing Centre for Grief and
Loss programs. Like some famous institutions (Jewish hospitals come to mind)
this demonstrates solid Jewish values
and brings recognition of the important Jewish contribution to society. Up
to 10% of the clients of these programs
are Jewish, and they operate without any
Jewish community dollars.
However, both our Seniors Making
Age-Related Transitions (SMART) program (operated jointly with the Jewish
Senior Citizens’ Centre), and Survivors’
Home Support program, have a 100%
Jewish clientele. And 75% our Life Links
settlement & advocacy service clients
are Jewish. We’re definitely here for the
Jewish community!
“The Federation mostly pays for it”
The Federation does support JFS
and there is no question that your dollars flowing through the United Jewish
Appeal campaign are critically important
and deeply appreciated. But Federation
grants don’t cover all the costs of services
that JFS provides to the Jewish community alone. Every year we are blessed
with gifts from many individuals, service
organizations and synagogues, but even
that falls short. To some degree we can
leverage grants from the wider community, but for Jewish-only services, few
funders are interested. We do our best
to fund raise, but we all know there’s a
lot of competition. Quite simply, JFS’s
work – as your hands of compassion and
kindness in our community – requires
greater funding. There is so much more
we yet could do.
“Are there really poor Jews in
Edmonton?”
According to the 2011 census, 13.2 of
Jews in Edmonton are living below the
low-income cut off. They live all over the
city, most often out of sight. They are
young working families and they are older
persons living alone. They are Canadianborn and they are immigrants. They
are people who struggle with persistent
health or addiction issues and they are
people who suffered a single catastrophic
personal event that changed everything
for them. Jews are not immune to such
challenges any more than non-Jews.
Fortunately, many of those in need do
make use of JFS’s services at reduced or
no cost to them.
“JFS is for people who are destitute”
That’s true... but only partially! A few fit
that description, but most who come to JFS
range all the way to the other end of the
spectrum. It should not be surprising that
ordinary, self-reliant, generally “together”
people also need a hand sometimes to sort
out a challenge or setback in life. That
could be dealing with kids or teens, coping with physical or mental health issues,
relationship struggles, career or financial
woes, getting older or having an aging
parent… things any of us may face. JFS is
about promoting well-being for all families
and individuals in our community. (And
by the way, we’re serious about protecting
confidentiality and anonymity so you can
set that concern aside.)
We’d be happy to hear from you with
any questions or comments. Check out
www.JFSE.org. Thank you for your support through the UJA and directly! Please
come to our Andrea Martin concert at the
Jubilee Auditorium on Sunday, October 5
(tickets at Ticketmaster.ca).

Autumn Report of the Community Facilities Utilization Committee
6
OCTOBER 2014
T
he Community Facilities Utilization
Committee of The Jewish Federation
of Edmonton has been hard at work over
the summer working on a plan for the
future of our community.
The Committee, consisting of Chair
Clive Oshry and members Stephanie
Hendin, Elaine Romanovsky, Shane Asbell,
Chloe Soibelman, Marshall Shoctor,
Ellery Lew and Sharon Marcus, aided by
Federation CEO Debby Shoctor, has been
meeting over the summer with various
stakeholder groups. Meetings have been
held with organizations in the community to determine synergies which may
or may not be created in terms of a new
facility for the community. To that end,
subcommittees have met with Talmud
Torah, Beth Israel and Beit Horim, as
well as other groups such as BBYO and
JAHSENA. Much useful information has
been gathered from these meetings, and is
being analyzed by the committee.
The Committee has created a blog on the
Federation website, on which it has posted
the results of our Ambassador meetings
with the community, as well as the committee’s Terms of Reference, Vision Statement
and Guiding Principles. The Guiding
Principles of the Committee include having
a Transparent and Consultative Process;
being Forward-Looking and Inclusive, and
being Financially Responsible. The committee is hard at work to fulfill its vision of
creating a new home and central address
for the Jewish Community of Edmonton.
On September 30th, the Committee,
together with the Federation Board will
meet with a Facilitator from The Jewish
Federations of North America (JFNA),
Debbie Stein, to further examine the data
collected so far and to explore scenarios
and the ultimate goals of this process.
After the results of this meeting are analyzed, scenarios will be created which
will be brought to the community during
several Town Hall meetings to take place
November 12th, 20th and 23rd. It is the
hope of the Committee that the results of
these meetings will allow the Committee to
make a recommendation to the Executive,
which will then be brought to the Board
and Community for approval at the AGM
on December 3rd. However, this may not
be possible, and if so, a special meeting of
the Community will be called.
We know it has been a long process,
but it has been the goal of the Committee
to do a thorough and transparent job of
trying to determine the best course of
action for the future of our community.
If you have any questions about this process or would like to offer your opinions,
please watch for and attend the Town
Hall meetings, the dates and times of
which will be announced shortly.
We appreciate your patience and look
forward to seeing you at the upcoming
meetings.
Sincerely,
Clive Oshry,

has been hard at work under the leadership of Sarah Dolgoy and Eleanor Millar,
planning their Shabadoo and networking
events. This year, Shabadoo will be held in
conjunction with The Shabbos Project on
October 24th. The Community Facilities
Utilization Committee has been meeting
with interested community organizations
over the summer and is holding a oneday focus group with Debbie Stein from
The Jewish Federations of North America
(JFNA) on Sept. 30th to formulate scenarios for the future of our community,
which will be brought to the members at
town hall meetings on November 12th,
20th and 23rd. We hope, through these
meetings, to reach some kind of consensus about the future of our community
and its buildings. Thanks to Clive Oshry
and his committee for heading up this
monumental task.
BBYO has started up again, with Fall
Boards on the way, as has Hillel, with
several events planned on campus. In
early October, the Israeli youth from
our partnership region in the Galilee
Panhandle will be visiting us and their
Talmud Torah friends under the guidance of Ivan Steiner, our P2G chair. Part
of their visit here during Succoth will
include a trip to the mountains, which
is always a highlight for everyone. This
program helps to support our partnership region and cement friendships and
ties between the two groups of students
which last a lifetime.
I want to wish everyone a healthy,
happy and sweet new year, and all the
best for the year to come – I can assure
you it will be filled with events and happenings you won’t want to miss, courtesy

J
.CORE has passed our one-year anniversary and shows no signs of slowing down! Our mission is to reconnect
people in our age demographic (25-45)
with the broader Jewish community in
Edmonton and to each other. This message has been gradually but consistently
filtering out to all segments of the community. Our dedicated and enthusiastic
Executive is reenergized to work even
harder in year two.
Our Young Professional Networking
Committee, guided by our organized and
creative Executive member, Kira Gregson,
held their first event on September 10th.
The committee worked collaboratively to
bring insight into what type of event
would appeal to the Young Professionals
in our community. The event, “Schmooze,
Booze and Jew-z” was held at Latitude
53 gallery and brought out new faces as
well as returning J.CORE members. Over
glasses of wine and beer, and munching on
delicious vegetarian appetizers, connections were made and business cards were
exchanged. There was a unanimous feeling
amongst attendees that these events were
valuable and the committee looks forward
to planning the next one.

Shabbadoo
After the success last year of,
“Shabbadoo, Night of 1000 Shabbat
Dinners” we are making it an annual
event! The Shabbadoo committee is busy
recruiting hosts and attendees as well as
assembling a fantastic basket of Shabbat
goodies to distribute to hosts. This year,
together with The Shabbos Project we are
also helping with two additional events to
bookend the main Shabbadoo event which
is taking place on Friday October 24th. On
Thursday October 23rd people are invited
to come together and “DO THE TWIST:
Challah Baking 101”at the Fantasyland
Hotel and then on Saturday October
25th we hope to see a great crowd at
“HAVDALLAH & S’MORE(s): Community
Havdallah, Smores & Hot Chocolate”.
The Welcome Wagons are still rolling
out to new members of the Edmonton
Jewish community in our demographic.
So far we have welcomed 22 new families
to Edmonton. The response has been
very positive. If you know anyone else
who has recently moved to Edmonton in
the 25-45 age demographic please email
J.CORE to let us know.

OCTOBER 2014
Edmonton represents at the JCC
Maccabi Games and Artsfest
BY LISA MILLER
T
his past August, Edmonton sent a
mighty group to this year’s JCC Maccabi
Games and Artsfest in Detroit, Michigan.
It is important to note that while only
five Edmontonian youth attended this
year’s games, it is the first time that
Edmonton has participated in both the
sporting competition and Artsfest.
On the sports side, Lydia Samis attended
the games for her second time and for the
second year in a row, returned home with
a medal. She was paired up with Max
Segal from New Jersey, and they won the
bronze in doubles tennis.
A veteran of four JCC Maccabi Games, Levi
Sonego finally medaled in soccer. He and first
year participant Noah Campbell joined forces
with Calgary players to win the silver medal
in the boys under-16 soccer tournament.
The Maccabi Alberta soccer team poses
for a team photo.
The JCC Maccabi games began 32 years
ago with the idea of bringing together Jewish
youth from North America, Israel and other
countries for a sporting competition. Since
the inception of the games, more than
100,000 teens aged 13-16 have taken part in
not only sporting competition, but performed
community service in the host cities.
A few years back, Artsfest was added to the
mix, inviting kids aged 13-17 to sing, dance,
act, paint and cook in workshop sessions.
This year, a newcomer to our city, Karin
Vaisbein, took part in Artsfest dance. She
was one of three young women and one
male to train under Mark McCleese. Mark
has choreographed nearly 70 musicals
coast to coast and in a few short days
crafted three dances for these teens to
perform in the final showcase.
Tevyn Shadlyn made his fourth trip to
the JCC Maccabi Games but first as an
Artsfest participant. He spent the week
in culinary school working with a pastry
chef, and a TV/celebrity chef but the highlight was the Jewish cooking class.
Each evening, the kids hung up their
aprons, dance shoes, soccer cleats and
tennis sneakers and joined the more than
1000 other teens from Canada, U.S.A.,
Israel, Mexico and Venezuela at dance
parties and other social events planned for
Edmonton’s delegation to the Maccabi
Games and Artsfest (L-R) Karin Vaisbein,

and Organizer Lisa Miller, Levi Sonego

them in and around Detroit.
After organizing Edmonton’s delegation to four JCC Maccabi Games, Lisa
Miller is stepping down and Alexa Steiner
is stepping up to organize the group for
the 2015 Games. Alexa has attended five
JCC Maccabi games, three as an athlete
and two as coach and organizer. She is
actively recruiting for next year’s games
which will be held in August either in Fort
Lauderdale, Milwaukee or Dallas. If you
have a teenager that might be interested
in taking part in the JCC Maccabi Games
and Artsfest as either an athlete or artist,
please contact Alexa at 587-224-2522 or
email: [email protected]. Alexa
would be more than happy to answer
any questions you might have about this
opportunity.
Autumn Update from the Edmonton Jewish Community Charitable Foundation
I
t is the mandate of the Edmonton Jewish Community Charitable Foundation
(EJCCF) to annually distribute 3.5% of the
total value of held funds to various Jewish
organizations throughout Edmonton.
Our aim is that one day we will grow
our funds such that that our annual
distribution will be so vast that we will
be able to annually fund all of our local
Jewish Charitable Organizations. We are a
far cry from that, but I have learned that
you have to make small goals first.
Our goal for this year is to have
$1,000,000 in our fund in perpetuity, which
means every year we distribute the 3.5%
and still at the end of the year have over
$1,000,000. While acknowledging that we
all have everyday needs, the EJCCF sees
the need to get our Community to see the
value of long-term thinking and planning.
We have started to meet with
Community stakeholders who are willing
to start up a fund, by donating $10,000 or
$25,000, and paying that amount over a
five- or ten-year period. It is a great way
for families to give a special thank-you to
their parents or grandparents by naming
the fund after them, and then directing
which partner agency in the community
should be a beneficiary.
Another area of great interest for our
board is bringing on new members. The
board meets up to six times a year, and
members have input on which Jewish
organizations will receive EJCCF funding
each year. It is a great opportunity to get
involved and learn more about how our
community works together.
If you are interested in learning more
about the simple process of setting up a
fund within the EJCCF, or would like to
join our board, please be in touch!
Sincerely,
Michael Paull

BBYO Update
W
BY JOEY TAPPENDEN
ith the summer over and everyone getting back into their
fall routine, Edmonton’s Jewish high school students are
beginning their preparation for a fantastic year in terms of BBYO
programming. BBYO is a worldwide teen movement, bringing
together high school students from all over the globe, with all
types of interests and from all types of Jewish backgrounds.
BBYO’s pluralistic movement of Jewish teens, alumni, parents,
volunteers and philanthropists serves as the one of the Jewish
community’s most valuable platform for delivering to the postBar/Bat Mitzvah demographic a fun and meaningful experiences
that inspires a lasting connection to the Jewish people.
With the programming year nearly in full swing, teens have the
opportunity to connect with each other at weekly programs that
promote teen leadership, community service and social action.
BBYO teaches teens the importance of community. Leadership
development is an important aspect of BBYO, but we ensure that
there is a strong element of fun to BBYO programming as well.
Be sure to keep your eye open for exciting events and opportunities with BBYO. Have any questions? Want to receive more
information? Contact Joseph Tappenden at The Jewish Federation
of Edmonton: (780) 487 0585 ext. 204 or [email protected]

Message from our UJA co-chairs:
D
ear Community members, on behalf of the
UJA team and everyone at The Jewish Federation of Edmonton, we would like to thank you for
your support of our community and the important work that we all do. For the past few years,
we have held very successful campaigns where we
have grown incrementally, but have hovered just
above the $1,000,000 mark. Our community finds
itself in a very unique situation now, with new
families in town and new energies engaging youth, young adults
and our Jewish future. Through your support and community
dedication, we aim to reach our 2014 UJA campaign goal of
$1,250,000. We are confident that we will be able to reach that
goal, especially given the great community projects and programming that we have brought to our community since this
time last year. It is our belief that this year’s campaign message
of strength through community, wherein We Answer the Needs
of the Jewish World, will inspire your continued support of our
Community both through volunteerism and philanthropy.
Sincerely,
Clyde Hurtig & Stacey Wright
CIJA Hosts Birthright, Hillel and Israel Advocacy Sessions
F
rom August 18-20, the annual national
meetings of Canada Israel Experience
– Birthright (CIE), Hillel Canada and The
Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA)
were held in Toronto. These sessions
brought together the staff and lay-leadership of these organizations, all of which
are initiatives of Federations across Canada, for strategic planning sessions for
the 2014-2015 year. Attendees were treated to presentations and best-practices
sessions by the likes of Linda Kislowicz,
CEO of Jewish Federations of Canada –
United Israel Appeal (JFC-UIA) and Don
Sylvan, CEO of Hillel Ontario, among
others. Nearly every Jewish Community
across the country was represented and
especially as pertaining to Western Canada, where new Hillel staff are on board
for both Winnipeg and Calgary, this was a
great opportunity plan our Western Canadian collaborative programming and to
learn from our partners out in the East.
Breakout sessions facilitated by CIJA and
Edmonton’s own Eleanor Millar from the
Hillel President Bari Lavy tabled at the University of Alberta Clubs Fair in early
September and signed up new students!
Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee (CJPAC) were positive environments to discuss advocacy surrounding
Israel, as well as Jewish issues at both the
campus and broader civil society levels.
Meanwhile, on the Birthright front, community representatives were updated as
to new Birthright policies and marketing
approaches. Thanks go out to CIJA for
facilitating these discussions to be truly
national in scope and for inviting all the
respective community delegates to these
well-run educational sessions.

E
very September, The Jewish Federation of Edmonton holds its annual
UJA Kickoff event to mark the start of
the UJA Campaign season. In years past,
we have been privileged to have as our
guests, educators, journalists and politicians from across Canada and beyond.
In fact, last year our community was
privileged to have Michael Farber as our
guest. This year, we took a different path,
and on September 21st the UJA team
was pleased to present Dan Ahdoot as
our special guest. Dan is a comedian

and New York, and has worked on various prominent television shows such as
Kickin’ it, on the Disney Channel, where
he plays the beloved character “Falafel
Phil” and The Tonight Show. We were
also pleased to welcome another special
guest, Dr. Ralph Shedletsky, who is the
Chair of the national Federation system,
Jewish Federations of Canada – United
Israel Appeal (JFC-UIA). Our campaign
kickoff featured presentations about the
work of Edmonton UJA and the Jewish
Federations across Canada and speeches
by UJA Co-Chairs Clyde Hurtig and Stacey Wright. After the presentations about
our Campaign and a video message from
Yossi Tanuri, Director General of JFC-UIA
thanking our Community for supporting
Israel during the recent Operation Protective Edge, Dan Ahdoot took the stage.
Dan, who had flown in directly from Los
Angeles for the UJA Kickoff, performed a
hilarious set and a great time was had by
all who attended. The event was held at
the Muttart Hall of Grant MacEwan University’s Alberta College Campus and was
well-attended by community members.
It was preceded by a cocktail reception
for major donors at the Union Bank Inn,
and followed by a dessert reception for
all those who attended. The goal of the
2014 Edmonton UJA Campaign is to raise
$1,250,000 for Jewish community causes
locally, nationally and abroad. To arrange

ou may have heard recently that
the Federal Government’s Canadian
Anti-Spam Legislations (CASL) came
into force on July 1, 2014. This legislation
has impacted how all organizations, such
as The Jewish Federation of Edmonton,
engage in electronic communication and
marketing by prohibiting the transmission of a “Commercial Electronic Message” (CEM) to an electronic address
unless the recipient has already consented to the receipt of the CEM.
Emails seeking donations, volunteers,
members, or promoting ticket sales,
events and the organization itself are
considered commercial activities.
In order to comply with the new
legislation, The Jewish Federation of
Edmonton must gain consent from all
members in order to continue sending
electronic communications. If you have
not already done so, please email info@
edjfed.org stating your consent, or fill out
the form below and fax or mail it back.
