Dr Chi has investments in SE Asia & China in online games, education, online travel, e-commerce and financial services. He is a member of the board of directors of Jing Jin Electric, Matchmove Pay, Lumina Louque, Roomorama, Affordable Luxury Network, Spicy Horse, Play Peli, California Intercontinental University, Mobinex, Inc., Alo7.com, Chinaway, Lotaris and Tenfen Technology. He earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in organizational knowledge and information technology. ent og 9/64 SEAPEC-booklet.indd 9 01/10/15 11:14 KEYNOTES Gallery I Lunch Keynote 14:00 - 14:30 Durreen Shahnaz Founder and Chairperson - Impact Investment Exchange Asia (IIX) In a career spanning over two decades, Durreen has built a track record as a successful academic, banker, media executive and social entrepreneur with stints at Morgan Stanley (New York), Merrill Lynch (Hong Kong), Grameen Bank (Bangladesh), World Bank/IFC (Washington DC), Hearst Magazines International, Readers Digest and Asia City Publishing. Durreen serves as a Program Advisor for the Clinton Global Initiative and sits on the advisory board for CASE i3 at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. Durreen is the 2014 recipient of the prestigious Joseph Wharton Social Impact Award given by the Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania. She is a TED 2010 Fellow as well as an Asia Society 21 Fellow. Durreen was an appointed member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Social Innovation. Durreen is also a regular participant for Channel News Asia’s morning program News on Views and a contributor to World Economic Forum publications, South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, Wharton Magazine and ADB blog. Durreen has been recently appointed to the Board of Director of National Book Development Council of National Library Singapore. Durreen founded the Program for Social Innovation and Change at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore and until recently was an Adjunct Associate Professor. Moderator Peggy Wang Head of Private Equity, Asia - White & Case Peggy Wang is a Partner at White & Case’s Corporate/ M&A and Private Equity practice in Hong Kong and Head of Asia Private Equity. She advises on public and private M&A and has experience practicing in both Hong Kong and New York. Her extensive expertise in this space, which spans a period of more than 17 years, has made her a valued resource for major private equity houses, financial institutions and corporates. Prior to joining White & Case in 2015, she was a Partner at a Magic Circle Firm. Additionally, Mr. Perlman focuses on real estate investments across the greater Asia-Pacific region. Prior to joining Warburg Pincus, he worked in the Real Estate Investment Banking Group at Credit Suisse. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for e-Shang Warehousing Service Co., Ltd, Cubic City (China) Service Apartment Group Holdings Ltd, Nova Property Investment Co., Ltd, PT. Nirvana Wastu Pratama and Vincom Retail Joint Stock Company. Mr. Perlman received a bachelor’s degree in business administration (B.B.A.) from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. Ivan Chern Managing Director - RRJ Capital Ivan Chern is a Managing Director of RRJ Capital. Mr. Chern joined RRJ Capital in 2011 and is based in Hong Kong where he has led the firm’s investments in personal care, healthcare, hospitality, mobile payment, packaging, beverage and education sectors. He currently serves as a director on the board of multiple portfolio companies. Before joining RRJ Capital, he was responsible for principal investments at Morgan Stanley Special Situations Group in Asia. Mr. Chern was also previously a M&A and private equity lawyer at O’ Melveny & Myers LLP. Mr. Chern earned his M.B.A. from INSEAD and his LL.B. Mr. Marti joined Navis in 2003 where he focuses on origination in Singapore and Indonesia, leads investment teams in making, monitoring and exiting investments, and sits on the boards and/or executive committees of several Navis portfolio companies. He has contributed to numerous investments including Kings Safetywear, Celebrity Fitness and Eng Kong. Prior to joining Navis, Mr. Marti worked across financial restructuring, venture capital and infrastructure finance with Cypress-Woods, K1 Ventures Limited, Bechtel Enterprises and Suez-Lyonnaise Des Eaux in Asia and the United States. Mr. Marti has been resident in Asia since 1992. He was raised and educated in France and the USA. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, and a Master of Science degree in Materials Science and All-Tech Innovations from Université de Technologie de Compiegne, France; and a MBA in Finance from The Anderson School at UCLA, Los Angeles. Harold Tjiptadjaja Managing Director & Chief Investment Officer PT Indonesia Infrastructure Fin Harold Tjiptadjaja joined IIF in 2011 as Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer - Domestic Client in IIF in December 2011. Prior to joining IIF, he was a Vice President of Earth Investment Group (2010-2011) and a Corporate Finance Partner of Indoconsult Prima (2009-2011). Before joining the Singapore office, Sam played a significant role in the creation, investment and portfolio management of all fund of funds managed by SVG Advisers, including the SVG Diamond, Asia and SPEFoF programmes. He brings a wealth of experience in the private equity industry across all three regions and has been involved with both primary and secondary investments. He serves on the advisory board of a number of investee funds. Prior to joining SVG Advisers he worked at KPMG. Nathaniel Childres Managing Director - CHAMP Private Equiy Mr Childres is a Managing Director of CHAMP and the head of CHAMP’s office in Singapore with responsibility for the Group’s investment activities in Asia. Mr Childres has worked in financial services since 1993, first as an attorney in mergers and acquisitions/ direct investment with White & Case in New York, Singapore and Jakarta, and since 1998 in private equity. Prior to joining CHAMP in 2001, Mr. Childres worked at Edgewater Capital, a US private equity fund. Mr Childres holds a Graduate Degree in Law (J.D.) from Columbia University, and a Bachelors Degree (B.A.) with High Honors from the University of California at Berkeley in History and International Development Studies. Mr Childres is a member of the Board of Directors and Investment Committee of the CHAMP Group. Moderator Paul R. Chan Principal - Capital Governance Paul has over 20 years’ experience in capital markets and consulting, including in central banking. He is a dedicated business consultant, with experience across many industries in Asia. Prior to joining Foo Kon Tan and Capital Governance, Paul founded a consultancy in foreign direct investment (FDI) specialising in the finance sector, which was instrumental in guiding some reputable financial institutions through their expansion into Singapore. He has helped clients navigate the growing and complex financial regulations, providing key support to ensure that governance, risk management and compliance processes are properly instituted. His experience in financial regulations is supplemented by substantial experience in Asian capital markets, having been an equity strategist and investment banker serving a number of large international fund managers and clients from Asia, UK and USA. Paul also worked several years as a management consultant in strategic and performance management with public companies and governmentlinked corporations. In the area of venture capital and private equity, Paul has worked in internet media, software distribution, consumer electronics and lifestyle goods. 17/64 SEAPEC-booklet.indd 17 01/10/15 11:14 REGULATORY LANDSCAPE Atelier I Nimisha Tailor Deputy Director (Policy and Markets) Competition Commission Of Singapore Nimisha is a Deputy Director in the Policy and Markets Division at the Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS), where she provides advice to government agencies on competition matters involving government regulations and policy. She also conducts competition economics research, market studies, and participates and presents at outreach sessions to business associations and business schools in Singapore. In addition, Nimisha provides expert economics input to antitrust investigations. Nimisha has extensive experience of working on mergers and acquisitions and has worked at the competition authority in New Zealand and the UK where she provided advice on the competition impact of UK and European mergers. Nimisha has also worked as an Economics Consultant and has previously provided competition advice to merging companies. Nimisha has a MSc degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She has a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Mumbai University, a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from Duke University and a Masters in Counselling (M. Coun) degree from Monash University. She is qualified to practice law in India and New York. Based in Singapore since 2006, Hemali has worked as a transactional lawyer at White & Case LLP and Ashurst LLP, handling cross-border financing and capital markets transactions in South and Southeast Asia. Hemali has also worked at ANZ as part of the deal execution team for bonds and loans syndication. Prior to joining Symphony, she was a Senior Compliance Officer at BNP Paribas in the AML/CFT department. Ltd., a fund management company registered with the Monetary Authority of Singapore. Ancora is the manager of Ancora Fund II, L.P., a Cayman Islands limited partnership, which invests primarily in the consumer and natural resources sectors in Indonesia. He is also the General Counsel of PT Ancora Internasional Manajemen, the Indonesian sub-manager of Ancora Capital Management Pte. Ltd. Originally from New York City, Nicholas has been resident in Singapore and Jakarta for over 20 years. Prior to joining Ancora, Nicholas was the General Counsel of Quvat Management Pte. Ltd. and its predecessors. Quvat is also a private equity fund management company focusing on investments in Indonesia. Nicholas had his own sole-practice international law firm in Singapore and prior to that was a partner of Sidley & Austin and earlier of Baker & McKenzie, in both cases based in their Singapore offices. Before coming to Asia, Nicholas was counsel at Baker & McKenzie in New York City and earlier, an associate at Skadden Arps. Nicholas’ experience includes organization and operation of private equity and other investment funds; organization, operation and regulation of fund management companies in Singapore and the United States; mergers and acquisitions and international capital markets transactions. Before joining LeapFrog, she worked in private practice in India. At Nishith Desai Associates, Mumbai, Annapoorna was an associate with the tax practice, where she won the International Bar Association tax scholarship for young lawyers. She later moved to AZB & Partners in New Delhi, where she was a senior associate. She has led advisory work on tax, corporate transactions and foreign exchange laws. Annapoorna’s clients have included leading private equity funds, multinational corporations, educational institutions and social funds. Moderator Suvir Varma Partner - Bain & Company Suvir Varma is a Senior Partner with Bain & Company and heads the firm’s Asia Pacific Private Equity and Sovereign Wealth Fund Practice. Mr. Varma works with leading Global and Asia-based financial investors to help them realize value across the investment value chain - from fund strategy and sector scans to commercial due diligence and portfolio company value enhancement. Mr. Varma sits on Bain’s Global Investment Committee, which manages funds on behalf of Bain’s accredited investors. Mr. Varma is also active on the Board of the Singapore Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (SVCA) and works with a number of other bodies focused on advancing the PE industry in Asia. He has authored several reports and articles on PE in Asia and speaks regularly at PE/M&A conferences across the region. Prior to joining Bain over 10 years ago, Mr. Varma worked at A.T. Moderator Graham Sheward Managing Director - Cim Global Business Graham Sheward has over 30 years of financial services experience gained initially in the UK, Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man. Prior to joining the Cim Group, Graham was Country Director, International Banking, Barclays Bank (Mauritius Limited), where he was responsible for a diverse client proposition including Global Corporates, Intermediaries and HNW Private Clients. His previous roles include Head of the NatWest Expatriate Service in the Isle of Man, Head of Retail Savings and Investments for Zurich Financial Services, and Managing Director of Close Brothers Group Offshore Banking Division. She was previously on the Board of Directors Tongji Environment, Ying Tai Bio-technology, OOBMedia as well as Globalroam as Audit Chairperson. Emily has more than 12 years of field experience with regional start up and growth companies in service sectors such as foreign exchange, education and has actively engaged in business advisory activities covering strategic alliances, cross border M&A and fund raising. Emily graduated from the University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts & Social Science in 1998. She is also a member of the Singapore Institute of Directors, the CFA Institute of Singapore and was previously Honorary Secretary of the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce for 3 consecutive terms. Arjun Bawa Senior Vice President - Pinebridge Investments Arjun Bawa is a Senior Vice President of PineBridge Investments and joined the firm in 2006 at its headquarters in New York. Arjun has been actively involved in investing in Asia for many years and relocated to the firm’s office in Singapore in 2012. He is responsible for sourcing, executing and monitoring Primary and Secondary private equity fund investments in Asia and is actively involved in investment decisions on a global basis. He is responsible for fundraising and client relations in the Far East and Asia. Prior to joining SL Capital Christian spent eight years at a real estate advisory firm in New York, and two years at asset management firms in the UK, selling a range of asset classes, including private equity, hedge funds, real estate and infrastructure. He holds an MBA from Cass Business School, London, a Masters from University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelors Science from University of Massachusetts. Abrar Mir Managing Partner - Quadria Capital Abrar Mir is the co-founder and Managing Partner of Quadria Capital, the largest healthcare focused private equity firm in Asia with the recent closing of its third investment vehicle, a US$304m healthcare private equity fund, in June 2015. Abrar is actively involved in managing the firm and serves on the fund’s Investment Committee. Abrar has led private equity and capital markets transactions with an aggregate value of over US$40 billion across Asia, US and Europe. Abrar currently serves on the boards of Medica Synergie, Soho Global Health, Orilus Investments and Medisia Investment Holdings. Prior to founding Quadria Capital, Abrar was Global Head of Healthcare at Religare Capital Markets. Before that he was a Managing Director at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in London where he was part of the senior leadership team that led the bank’s healthcare investment banking strategy in Europe and Emerging Markets. Abrar received a M.Phil in International Law from the University of Cambridge and is fluent in five languages. 28/64 SEAPEC-booklet.indd 28 01/10/15 11:14 Atelier II FUNDRAISING Vinnie Lauria Managing Partner - Golden Gate Ventures Vinnie is entrepreneur turned venture capitalist. He is a founding partner of Golden Gate Ventures, an early-stage VC firm in Southeast Asia with over 20 investments to date. He is a Kauffman Fellow, and a guest lecturer at the National University of Singapore. He was rated by the Founder Institute as highest startup mentor in Asia from a pool of 2,500 mentors. Prior to setting up Golden Gate Ventures, Vinnie built two startups in Silicon Valley: Meetro, a location-based chat service which was dissolved with many lessons learned in 2007; and Lefora, a forum hosting platform which grew to over 100,000 communities and was acquired by CrowdGather in 2010. He founded the Silicon Valley NewTech meetup, featuring hundreds of startups to a monthly audience w/ more than 10,000 members. Earlier in his career, Vinnie spent four years within IBM, helping to shape how IBM was approaching social software for the enterprise. Vinnie is a graduate of Boston University’s College of Engineering. Vinnie is passionate about building startup ecosystems. He joined his first startup while still in high school. Moderator Anu Sahai Director - ASEAN Private Equity & Venture Capital Association Anu Sahai is a Founding Director of the ASEAN Private Equity & Venture Capital Association, an industry network of investors that are interested in investing in the ASEAN region. From 2010 until 2013, she was the CEO and Director of Aditya Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company in Singapore, where she was responsible for building the international business footprint for Birla Sun Life Asset Management, a $15 billion Indian asset manager. She is an accomplished professional with over two decades of global investment experience across alternative and traditional asset classes in the US and Asia. She was also the founder of Anew Capital Management LLC and Portfolio Manager of a multi-strategy hedge fund, for which she received a Rising Hedge Fund Stars of 2008 award from Institutional Investor. Anu has had a successful career in the financial services industry, including previously with ING Investment Management Americas, where she managed equities, high yield and convertible bond portfolios. Ms Sahai is part of the Investment Advisory Committee of the Singapore American School and a member of the Indian Business-leaders Roundtable in Singapore. She is also actively engaged with the Singapore Institute of Directors, Women Corporate Directors, BoardAgender and the Financial Women’s Association. Serge joined IFC’s Asset Management Company in December of last year – moving from the IFC, which he joined in 2000, in the FIG department of Latin America. During his tenure at IFC, he led more than 40 equity transactions with a value of $1.4 billion. While at IFC, he lived successively in Washington, Rio, Bogota, Hong Kong, New Delhi and now Singapore.
