What to wear beneath
your graduation gown
Caps and gowns are as much a graduation tradition as the
playing of “Pomp and Circumstance.” The gown and other accoutrements are customs that have been passed down through
generations, dating back to the early days of academia. Colors, stripes, positioning of graduation tassels, and the shapes
of sleeves and hoods all may offer information about graduates and the degrees they earn.
Graduation attire ensures grads look uniform and professional. Although there’s little variation in how to wear the
cap and gown, graduates do have flexibility with regard to the
clothing they wear beneath their ensembles. It may be tempting to go casual beneath a cap and gown, but grads might
regret that decision when taking post-ceremony pictures.
Some graduates think it doesn’t matter what they wear beneath the gown, feeling the gown will cover everything anyway. But that isn’t true, as grads can expect at least a portion
of their attire to be peeking through their graduation gowns.
Many such gowns end at the knee or slightly below, making it
easy for everyone to see graduates’ pants and shoes.
Both male and female grads can benefit from wearing
something classy beneath their gowns. A crisp collared shirt
can look sharp for men and women alike. Guys might want to
wear a tie for that extra touch. Graduation gowns tend to be
solid colors and may be quite bland, so a shirt with a splash of
color can make a statement that is neither bold nor silly.
Remember to wear something form-fitting or slim cut
under the gown. The graduation robe is voluminous enough
without adding any extra girth from bulky clothing. Graduation gowns fall short of form-flattering, so wearing many
layers beneath a gown will only add to the volume.
You may not have time to change between the ceremony
and the after-party or dinner, so it’s important to wear
something that is appropriate for the next venue. Save time
and embarrassment by wearing clothing that will seamlessly
transition to a family dinner or after-party.
Consider the bottoms worn as well. Men can choose khakis
or solid-colored slacks. Avoid wearing pants that are the same
color as the graduation robe, as you want a little contrast.
Women who wear skirts or dresses that end above the knee
and will not show beneath the gown hem have more freedom.
Avoid long skirts or dresses that can make the outfit look
weighed down when paired with the gown.
Graduates’ shoes will be on full display come the big day.
Therefore, wear new, clean shoes that are presentable and
formal. Avoid sneakers or flip-flops, which are too casual.
Keep in mind the location of the ceremony and the forecast.
If you will be trekking across a muddy football field, wear a
closed-in, durable shoe, as heels or open sandals may cause
you to trip or sink into the turf. Dress appropriately for the
temperature, too. A summer graduation may be hot and stuffy,
especially outdoor ceremonies under the blazing sun. Wear
lightweight clothing and plenty of sunblock to stay comfortable and safe. Dress in layers if it is chilly so you can remove
layers as necessary should temperatures fluctuate.
The style of the graduation cap will affect hairstyles and
other accessories, including earrings. Clean, brushed hair is
most suitable for both men and women. Updos are impractical. If you want your hair off of your face, consider a braid.
A button-down shirt and tie is a classic look
beneath graduation garb.
Keep earrings simple and tuck any chunky necklaces under
the gown to maintain an elegant and streamlined look.
Graduation attire can set the tone for the ceremony and life
after school. Dress appropriately because all eyes will be on
you.
Learn the proper way to wear
a graduation mortarboard
Graduation season is upon us, and that
means students from all over the country are
preparing for the next chapter in their lives.
But before they further their educations or enter the job market, they must first participate
in a long-running tradition: the graduation
ceremony.
At this event full of pomp and circumstance, graduates will be required to wear
some sort of unifying, formal dress to set
themselves apart from others. Many schools
use the traditional cap and gown for graduations. This consists of a robed gown and
tassel-topped mortarboard that usually
coordinate with the official school colors.
Graduates also may wear other accoutrements depending on the level of their degrees.
This tradition dates back to medieval Europe
when students wore special uniforms each
day to denote they were scholars. But today’s
students dress up in academic regalia only
during commencement proceedings or other
graduation-related events.
Of the various components of graduation
dress, the one that may give graduates the
most difficulty is the mortarboard. The square
academic cap is referred to as a “mortarboard” because of its similarity in appearance
to the hawk or hod tool used by masons to
hold mortar. It can be a cumbersome piece
that may slip off if not worn correctly or if
it is sized incorrectly. The cap of the mortarboard should fit snugly on the head. It should
not rest on the top of the head, but fit well
enough to cover at least the top one-third of
Creative ways to display
diplomas and school awards
Graduation season is upon us, and grads
everywhere are lining up to receive their
diplomas and degrees, which represent years
of hard work and discipline. Diplomas may
be simple sheets of paper, but those sheets of
paper are symbolic of so much more. Yet too
often diplomas end up collecting dust in a box
somewhere instead of being displayed in a
home.
There may be plenty of reasons why
diplomas end up going from commencement
ceremonies to shelves in the back of closets.
Some just cannot find a way or a place to display their diplomas without feeling as if they
are boasting about their accomplishments.
Diplomas incorporated into a larger collection
of items can become eye-catching components of home décor.
• Practice feng shui. The principles of feng
shui suggest the “fame” area of a home is the
central area along the wall opposite the front
door. A “power” area also exists in the center
of the wall opposite the main entrance door.
Such areas make ideal spots to display diplomas, awards and trophies that remind you of
times of personal triumph. If anyone asks,
let them know that you’re dabbling in feng
shui and these displays are fueling the fire of
future success in your career and life.
• Create a gallery wall. Certificates and
diplomas can be matted and framed just like
any other piece of artwork. When mixed and
matched with other framed pieces, they create
a subtle, rather than boastful, effect. These
certificates will blend into home décor and be
part of a larger gallery look, providing visual
interest and conversation pieces.
• Design a digital display. Modest graduates may not want their diplomas in full view
at all times. Awards can be scanned into a
computer and turned into digital images.
Include an image of your degree in a reel that
includes photos from your years in academia.
The images will rotate in a digital picture
frame. Update the display from time to time
to keep it interesting.
• Put together a portfolio. You may want to
scrapbook awards and diplomas as you would
other milestones in life. Purchase a sturdy
binder and slip the awards into clear, protective covers. The binder can be stored on a
bookshelf and pulled out whenever you want
to revisit your years in school.
• Create a shadow box. Fill a shadow box
with the diploma and some other mementos
from school, like newspaper clippings or
prom ticket stubs. The entire collection will
make for a nice display you can enjoy whenever you feel compelled to take a trip down
memory lane.
Diplomas are symbolic of significant
accomplishments in life. Explore the many
ways to display it and be proud of the hard
work required to earn your diploma.
the head. If the cap seems loose, graduates
may want to use a few bobby pins to keep it
in place.
The mortarboard should be positioned so
that its point faces the middle of the forehead.
When viewed from above, it should create a
diamond shape, not a square. Also, the mortarboard should be horizontal (parallel) to the
floor. Imagine it to be a flat surface on which
a cup or book can be placed. If the mortarboard is tilted upward, it is worn incorrectly.
Some graduates position the mortarboard
poorly to accommodate hairstyles. However,
it should be flat and secure on top of the head.
A tassel is the final component of the mortarboard. It is affixed to the top of the cap by
a loop around a button. The tassel indicates
the level of academic achievement. Graduates
who will be receiving a high school diploma
or an undergraduate degree from a college or
university will wear the tassel so that it hangs
over the front-right side of the mortarboard.
Once the diplomas are received, graduates
will be instructed to flip the tassel over to the
left-hand side. Graduates receiving a Master’s
degree begin with the tassel on the front left
side and switch it over the right after receiving their diplomas. Graduates frequently keep
their tassels as mementos.
The graduation ceremony is rife with tradition, from the processional to the speakers to
the manner of dress. Mastering the mortarboard can help graduates look their best on
this special day.
Can’t miss
grad gifts
Graduation season is a time for celebration as students prepare to face the
next phase of their lives. Graduation parties will soon be in full swing, and people
may find themselves attending one or
more of these festive occasions.
Party guests and graduation wellwishers may want to bring gifts for the
guests of honor, and the following are a
few ideas that newly minted grads may
appreciate now or in the near future.
Automotive accessories
Many recent grads use the months immediately following graduation to take a
road trip, making automotive accessories
great gifts. Increase the enjoyment factor
of a post-graduation road trip by treating
the grad to a subscription to a streaming
satellite music service. This way grads
can enjoy their favorite tunes no matter
where their roads lead them.
Financial favors
Cash is a graduation gift that will
never go out of style. It may not be fancy,
but cash certainly comes in handy for
graduates facing repayment of student
loans or the costs of secondary schooling.
If giving cash at a party, write a check
payable to the graduate rather than giving
loose cash that can be easily lost. Some
grads even may have a Go Fund Me or
Paypal account to help offset schooling
costs, and gift givers can deposit money
directly into such accounts if they so
desire.
