NHS PHOTOS by Mrs. Kraemer By Mason Jensen Grade 12 The 2015-2016 school year is coming to a close and with that comes the traditional school yearbook signing party. A lot of work has been put into the 2016 yearbook including the yearbook staff reaching out to different businesses around Ashby, Evansville, Dalton, Elbow Lake, Battle Lake, and Fergus Falls asking for their support in purchasing an ad in the yearbook. Brianna Spangler (head editor) along with Madison Krupke and Mason Jensen spent much of the school year working on page designs, taking pictures, and creating interesting cut-out pictures and layouts. The staff of Sami Johansen, Katie Anderson, Ethan Roley, Eric Amundson, Kyle Fick, Kerstyn Schroeder, Riley Zastrow, and Mikayla Dahlen, contributed by working on picture days, selling books and ads, and working at the signing party, etc. Also, Riley Zastrow was the head editor of the Elementary Arrow yearbook assisted by Mikalya Dahlen with photography. The Annual Signing Party was held on Wednesday, May 18, where students were able to exchange autographs and memories while enjoying pop, chips, and special yearbook autograph pens. Page 2 HUMAN INTEREST By Micah Martin Grade 9 On Friday, May 13, the Obama administration sent out a directive that every public school provide transgender access or face the loss of federal funds. This drew fast and strong disapproval from conservatives, with one public official saying it was presidential “blackmail”. The administration’s directive stated that schools should give transgender students access to all activities and facilities consistent with their gender identity. This has started a national debate that could keep on into the next president’s term. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/05/13/report-obama-administration-to-tellpublic-schools-to-let-transgender-students-use-bathrooms-their-choice.html By Sara Stockard Grade 12 From January to February, 2016 a total of 13 sperm whales were washed up on the beach in Germany. An autopsy revealed that the whales had all died of heart failure. The researchers believe that the young bulls, all between 10 and 15 yrs. old, had entered the North Sea by mistake. Since the sea floor is too shallow for the deep sea whales they become disorientated and die. While that is sad, what is worse is the amount of plastic and debris the scientists discovered inside the mammals’ stomachs. One item found eaten by these whales was the remains of a 13-meter long and 1.2-meter wide net used for shrimp fishing. The scientists also found a 70-centimeter-long plastic cover from a car engine and some sharp-edged pieces from a plastic bucket. Though the plastic was not responsible for the death of the sperm whales, the discovery is a reminder of the harmful consequences of our plastic ridden society. Sperm whales are not the only marine animals hurt by the increasing amount of plastic in our oceans. Sea turtles also mistake the brightly colored trash for food. As pieces of the man-made material get stuck in the animal's digestive tract, they result in a build-up of gas causing “floater syndrome” which means that the turtles can no longer dive deep into the ocean to seek food. Instead, they just float on the surface of the water and if not rescued in time, starve to death. It’s time for a change before it’s too late. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/03/160331-car-parts-plastics-dead-whalesgermany-animals/ By Michael Van Santen Grade 10 Dead Rodent Found Floating Inside Dr. Pepper Bottle A Houston-area family claims to have found a dead rat in of a bottle of Dr. Pepper — one they say their toddler had been sipping from. John Graves of Katy, Texas, shared a photo of the rodent on his Facebook page last Monday. Graves wrote that the family only discovered the animal after his 3year-old grandson, Kayden, had gotten about halfway through the 20-ounce soft drink, which Graves says they bought Sunday at a Valero gas station in nearby Galveston, Texas. “Nothing like your grandson drinking half a Dr. Pepper only to find a dead rat floating in the bottle,” he wrote on Facebook. http://www.click2houston.com/news/family-says-dead-rodent-found-in-dr-pepper-bottle May 19,, 2016 By Autum Bitzan Grade 9 By Mason Jensen Grade 12 For the past few years, the Ashby students have been going about in the school and grounds and out in the community doing different tasks to show how much we care about our school and community. One day when he was working with the tension springs, one of them fell on the floor and to his surprise, the spring kept bouncing from place to place after it hit the ground. There will be a State Shoot during the week of June 14, 2016 for every shooter in our state. It will be held in Alexandria. If your team gets a good score your team will advance and possibly shoot again. Teams will be placed based on the total scores shot. You can also advance individually. You need to maintain a top position all year to advance and compete for the championship. Riley Zastrow, an 11th grader, started in softball in 7th grade because she likes being a part of something bigger than herself. Her advice to younger players is to keep striving to reach your goal and don’t let anyone bring you down. Her position on the team is a designated hitter. By Christian Andersen Grade 12 The Rocket 9 The film shows a time thought of as a cornerstone in the NHL's history. It shows the life of Maurice Richard, The Rocket, beginning with his years as a teenager, his rise to the Montreal Canadians, up to the Richard Riot. It tells about his full career. The dialogue and hockey scenes were produced to be as true to reality as possible; they were reviewed by Richard himself before he died and also by his wife and his children. Dick Irvin Jr. wrote and recorded testimonies and memories about his father and about reporters from the era. Critics say it’s one of the best Hockey movies of all time for all ages. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Maurice_Richard_(film) Whether cruising on Park Avenue or parked at Costco, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 gets attention wherever it goes. Lightweight construction offers nimble handling; a 310-hp V-6 and eight-speed automatic provide brisk acceleration. Front-drive is standard; allwheel drive is optional. The handsome interior features a rear seat that reclines and slides fore and aft for added comfort; a 40/20/40 split-folding seatback aids flexibility. Tech includes 4G connectivity as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 3.6-liter V-6 is a familiar GM size, but this is a new DOHC 24-valve direct-injected design that’s smoother, slightly more potent (310 horsepower), and more efficient thanks in large part to its variable valve timing, cylinder-shutdown, and auto stop-start technology. ww w. c a d i lla c . c o m / crossovers-suvs/xt5-crossover.html www.caranddriver.com › Cadillac Page 5 REVIEWS and By Estelle Lutz Grade 9 John Bellion is an American singer/ songwriter. They are now in some streams and you can shoot or spear as many as you want. The smaller suckers are running as well and they work good for bait for Northerns and Walleyes. RANDOM INFO May 19, 2016 By Estelle Lutz Grade 9 By Sara Stockard Grade 12 I went around and asked a few AHS students this question, “How strict is too strict?”referring to parents. This is what I learned... Some students have really uncompromising curfews that they feel are too strict (say 9:00 or 10:00 p.m.). A few students said their parents constantly monitor their social media accounts/ phone/texts. One student stated that their parents will not let them go anywhere with other people unless a responsible adult is present. Another student said that they always want to go to a friends house instead of their own because their parents are too strict. A frequent comment I heard was that many parents won’t let their teenagers watch certain T.V shows or movies. We must remember, our parents are looking out for our best interests and this is good parenting, so be happy that they care. Carlton Wright Miles was born on June 12, 1884 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Miles was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and worked as a drama critic for the Minneapolis Journal. Early in his career he studied theater in Europe and had contributed articles to London newspapers. In 1913 he wrote his first play, “Mose”, a humorous take on college life. He collaborated with John Colton on the play “The Flitting Lady”. Miles also wrote the book “History of the Iron Range of Minnesota”. For the last 18 years of his life Miles was active in Lakewood Summer Theatre productions in Skowhegan, Maine. He also worked as a theatrical press agent. Miles is probably best remembered as a playwright of “Nine Pine Street”. Miles died of a heart attack on September 18, 1954 at his residence at the Dauphin Hotel in New York City. http://www.imdb.com/ name/nm0587073/ By Tanner Hart Grade 9 By Mikayla Dahlen Grade 11 I interviewed a few people about what they are looking forward to this summer, jobs they will have, etc. Fre sh man Stella Lutz is looking forward to “winter” because she is going back home to Australia.
