“Getting Ready”
It seems incredible, but I am beginning my third
year as rabbi of Beth Judea. I look forward with joy
and inspiration to the year to come, as I continue
my effort to learn every name and as our staff and
dedicated lay leaders strive to meet the needs of
our large and varied membership.
We begin each year together with many hours of
prayer, song and study over the High Holidays. In
order to maximize our experience of these days, we
must prepare ourselves properly. And with the fall
holidays beginning the first week of September, we
have to begin our preparations early. Getting ready
for such important days involves several
components: the practical; the personal; the
communal.
In practical terms: We have to be ready by
turning in our membership and school registration
paperwork to the synagogue office. If you have not
already done so, please drop by to take care of this
important item. We don’t want anyone in the
position of not having access to High Holiday
services, the clergy or any other service Beth Judea
provides our community during the year. If there are
financial reasons for not having turned in these
forms, please contact our office and we will help you
find your way with discretion and kindness. In
addition, we each need our own copy of Mahzor Lev
Shalem, which we first used last year. It is a
wonderful tool for understanding traditional prayer
and for connecting with God. Again, please contact
our office to get your copy.

Shabbat Prayers

Those who celebrate birthdays and anniversaries during the
month of August will be recognized at our service on August 2nd.
Our worship will begin at 7:30 pm and will conclude by 8:15 pm.
Children of every age are welcome!
UPSTAIRS THOUGHTS
2013 Shabbat Under the Stars
In personal terms: The High Holidays are our
chance to reset our relationships with each other
and with God. Our sages teach us that the days
themselves will atone for any transgressions
between us and God, but they cannot atone for
transgressions between one person and another
until we have made things right with them. We
have to engage in the process of heshbon
nefesh, an accounting of the soul, in order to
admit our faults. We must then have the courage
to approach those we have wronged and ask for
their forgiveness. This may be one of the most
difficult things we can do, but it is also the most
important.
In communal terms: We have to be ready to
come together at the appropriate times and
places in order to feel that we are one praying
and forgiving community. In this I include the
Yizkor service on Yom Kippur. I strongly
encourage all who are in services to remain in
the room for Yizkor. The memorial service
includes prayers for the martyrs of our people,
including the victims of the Shoah who may have
no one left to remember them, as well as prayers
for congregants who have passed away in the
last year. In addition to remembering them, our
presence at Yizkor provides comfort to those
who have suffered a recent loss. Rushing out of
the room not only disrupts the service; it also
abandons those who need our support the most.

In all these ways, now is the time to begin
making our mental preparations for the holidays.
Let’s all start the process of teshuvah, of
repentance, by getting ready in ways that we
have not in years past. Let’s make the small
changes that we should in order to feel more,
and to be more, in the year to come.

During the summer, with less activity in our
building, we are often in greater need of your
assistance with our daily minyan. Sunday
mornings, at 9:00AM, Monday mornings at
6:15AM, Monday through Thursday evenings at
7:30PM. Just showing up makes all the difference.
Cemetery Visit – September 1, 2013
One element of High Holiday preparations is to visit the graves of our loved ones. As we recall our own lives over the past year,
we also remember those whose lives shaped ours. Rabbi Pivo will be visiting the graves in the Beth Judea section and
elsewhere at Shalom Memorial on Sunday September 1st, beginning at 10 a.m., and invites all who wish to join him to do so.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

Special opportunity for incoming BET Students to study with Hazzan
Weisberg on Thursdays at 4:15!! Students who enjoy learning Hebrew
and music are invited to get a head start using the ancient musical
phrases known as the Trope System, taught by Hazzan Weisberg. After
getting to know the trope signs, students will have a chance to prepare
small portions in the Torah for Gan Shabbat services in 2014. There is a
one-time $60 fee for texts/recordings.
MEGILLAT EICHA READING
Chant MEGILLAT ESTHER next Purim!
It may seem strange to be thinking about Purim during the summer, but
this is actually the perfect time for those who enjoy chanting scripture to
be acquiring this wonderful, tongue-in-cheek version of the tropes, in
order to read from the Megillah next Purim (March 15, 2014 in the
evening). It is such a dramatic story! The anticipation of everyone’s
groggers, which surrounds each time the evil Haman is mentioned, makes
it all the more exciting. If enough of you are interested, I will offer a class
on Esther trope – I know of several already who have asked about it – or if
not, then hopefully I can work with you individually. Be forewarned,
however, that the Purim story is recited at breakneck speed, and should
be read directly from the scroll, similar to Torah. Once again, if you are up

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
My name is Debbie Kreisman Dubin and I am happy and
humbled to be your current president of Congregation Beth
Judea. Thank you so much for entrusting me with this position.
Let me tell you a little about myself. I am Skokie raised, and I
graduated from Niles North. I received my undergraduate
degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and
my MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at
Northwestern University.
Jewish holidays have always been synonymous with family for
me. I have such fond memories of breaking Yom Kippur’s fast
in West Rogers Park with my maternal grandparents, and our
extended family. That is where I acquired my taste for coffee
(of course, I drank a little coffee with my milk)! Breaking Yom
Kippur’s fast is still one of my favorite days. We share the
evening with my husband’s family, 50 relatives including three
generations. It is always joyous, and the spaghetti casserole is
to-die-for!

After graduating college I embarked on my spiritual journey. I
took a Judaism class at the Florence G. Heller JCC with Rabbi
Yehiel Poupko. I started attending events sponsored by the
Young Leadership Division of the Jewish United Fund. And, I
went to Israel for the first time in 1986 (I have been back twice
since then). I love(d) spending Shabbat in Jerusalem!
I married my husband, Mark, in 1988 and we have three
children: Daniel is 21 and a rising senior at University of
Southern California, and Gillian and Gregory are17 and rising
seniors at Stevenson High School.
My involvement in the Jewish community, and the Buffalo
Grove community at large, has followed the growth cycle of my
children. When they were young, I led the Preschool Parents’
Association at the Duman JCC. We sponsored events which
supplemented their learning and social experiences, as well as
raising money for scholarship funds.
When they were in elementary school, I coordinated book fairs
at, and for, 4 schools. Concurrently, I was appointed a position
on the Young Women’s Board of JUF. In addition to utilizing
my organizational skills for planning various events,
involvement in JUF requires fundraising training.

My younger kids were not big on attending Hebrew school or services and they would often complain. I have tried to
instill in them that it is very easy to complain, but much more difficult to affect change. Since they were too young to
become involved in the synagogue, I offered to become involved for them, and be their voice at CBJ. I just started my
seventh year on the Board of Directors. I have served on the general Board, and I have served on the Executive Board
as the Youth Vice President and the Executive Vice President.
In addition to working hard for the good of Congregation Beth Judea, I also bring an interesting perspective to the position
of President. I am a non-Hebrew reader, and as such, I understand the concern of exclusion felt by many interfaith
families. Personally, one of the things that I find most beautiful about the Conservative service is the Hebrew. I love the
beauty of the language, the cadence, the melodies. I love the fact that wherever you go in the world, every Conservative
synagogue will be reading the same words in the same language! The Hebrew is the connection to the heritage, past,
present, and future. I take advantage of the transliterated booklets for each of our services, which allow me (and any
other non-Hebrew reader) to participate fully. I also read most of the English translations, which keeps me involved and
understanding.
August will be a busy month at CBJ, beginning with an AIPAC speaker on the 1 st. Sisterhood’s Annual Rummage Sale is
on August 4th, and Shabbat Under the Stars will be on August 23rd. The Rizman Golf Outing is on August 25th. And, as
a reminder, Erev Rosh Hashanah begins September 4, 2013. If you have not renewed your membership, please do so
as soon as possible.
Finally, I am looking forward to serving Congregation Beth Judea for the next two years and to meeting you. If I can be of
any assistance, please contact me.

Meet 3 Former Major League Greats
I've come across an amazing project put together over the last 4 years by a
member of our synagogue involving Jewish Baseball Players. Details and links
below in the email I am forwarding, but generally, the project started with a
painting of all the current and former living Jewish baseball players, in addition to
some Jewish Baseball executives and celebrities. He then had 500 Lithographs all
originally hand signed by each of the people, including Sandy Koufax, Kevin
Youkilis, Steve Stone, Larry King, Bud Selig, Jerry Reinsdorf, etc. The project is
amazing and has raised almost $100,000 to date for various charities.
I am writing to you because we have put together an event on August 14, where
you can see the artwork, here about it and meet 3 of the ballplayers included (Ron
Blomberg, Ross Baumgarten and Art Shamsky). You also walk away with
autographed gifts.
So take a look at the attached and check it out on the website at

EDUCATION
At Congregation Beth Judea’s Religious School, Jewish education is based on two core
principles. First, Jewish learning is not only about the child but rather is a whole-family
experience. We offer meaningful ways for every member of the family to connect with Judaism
in every stage of life. Second, learning is not only about what happens in school but throughout
our daily lives. Therefore, what we do in the classroom will relate to what happens in your
home, as we worship and in all the places we go.
Congregation Beth Judea’s Religious School is committed to Jewish learning that is relevant,
inspirational and transformative. We provide our students and their families with the tools to
participate meaningfully in the Jewish community, with pride in their Jewish heritage and with
the awareness that their actions will shape the future of the Jewish people.
Parents, students and teachers are the stakeholders in our Religious School program. Its
success is owed to all of you who play a role in shaping our school’s vision and culture. We
look forward to being your partners in this great endeavor.
Later this month, when you pick up your Religious School Packets, you will receive the Family
Information Guide, calendar and other handouts necessary for the school year. Please
familiarize yourself with the contents. It addresses questions you may have about attendance,
service requirements, curriculum, behavior codes and much more. Keep it in a handy place!
We encourage all of you to volunteer in any way you can. We are all part of a wonderful team
whose goal is to make certain that our children have a glorious, educational year.

parents) to reconnect with each other and their teachers, to mingle and schmooze and of

EDUCATION
Shabbat Service Attendance: All Aleph through Heh students are required to attend 9 Shabbat
services during the course of the school year (August 2013 – May 2014). Services that will
count toward Shabbat service requirements include
(1)Friday night services
(2)Shabbat morning services
- Aleph & Bet families may attend the Gan Shabbat service which begins at 10:30
am in the Beit Midrash.
(3)High Holiday Services (Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Day services)
(4) any service in which there is a Torah and Haftarah reading such as
- Rosh Chodesh
- Sukkot
- Shemini Atzeret (morning service)
- Simchat Torah (morning service)
- Passover
- Shavuot
We want the students to come with parents in order to fully enjoy and participate in the service.
Students and families must stay for the DURATION of the SERVICE.
This is NOT a drop-off Shabbat.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

Gimel students should note that Shabbat morning services will count only on the days
when there is no Gimel Shabbat.

HEH students must attend 6 Shabbat Morning Services prior to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah;
these 6 Services will be counted towards both the Shabbat Service and B’nai Mitzvah
Requirement.

Attention Torah Readers:
In order to allow trained Torah Readers greater access to
available Shabbat aliyot, we are trying a new system:
A list of the upcoming dates and portions is available via
this link (Torah Portions).
If you see a portion you would like to read, send a note to
Hazzan Weisberg identifying which date and portion that
you would like to read. He will confirm your assignment.
Hazzan will usually confirm within 3 days. If you have not
received a response after 3 days, please send him a
reminder along with a copy to Mark Sheft.
As in the past, you need to check back with him about two
weeks prior to the date you are reading to ensure that you
have learned the portion.

YOUTH
A MESSAGE FROM: MARC SENDER, YOUTH DIRECTOR
Dear Beth Judea FamilyWith summer in full swing and the sweltering heat covering much of the Chicagoland area now is the perfect time to think about the
upcoming school year… Right??? Well while it is hard to imagine that in just a few short weeks we are going to be kicking off another
amazing year in our Beth Judea youth department. The newly elected BJUSY board has been hard at work planning an exciting year
and I can’t wait to get started. We are still accepting applications for BJUSY General Board but the deadline is approaching fast so make
sure to get those in if you would like to be part of the planning for an awesome BJUSY year.
In anticipation of this coming year I was fortunate to be able to spend some time at Ramah Day Camp with a bunch of our Beth Judea
youth. I encourage those of you who have not made a journey to Ramah Day Camp to do so. It is tucked away in Wheeling, IL off of
Hintz Road and from the road you would not believe all the amazing things they have inside. I was fortunate, along with Hazzan
Weisberg and Youth Vice-President Joan Smith, to be able to experience their moving Tisha B’Av ceremony with them and it was quite
an impactful event. Take a look at the picture from our visit and then perhaps take a visit of your own one day.
Visiting the camp got me geared up for this new school year. This coming year we are going to continue our new teen minyanim once a
month on a Saturday morning. We will be having our youth high holiday services in the beginning of September and then our very first
teen minyan will be October 26th and it will be a Superhero Minyan. In addition to our teen minyanim we are going to continue our
outstanding programming throughout the year.
The new year kicks off August 18th with the USY vs. Men’s Club softball game and congregational bbq. This event has gotten bigger and
bigger the last couple of years and we would love to see a huge turnout from the community. Regardless of whether you are in USY or
Men’s Club or not you should come on by Twin Groves in Buffalo Grove and watch some fun softball and enjoy a delicious bbq.
Everybody is invited and this program is free of charge.
For our USYers the first Tuesday program will be right after that on August 27th. Our Kadima will have their first program, a Maccabi
Madness program, on September 15th and then our Kadinkers will have their program, More and More Monkeys Jumping on the

Volunteers are needed on Sunday, August 11th from 11 am - 4 pm at the Maot Chitim warehouse, located

SISTERHOOD'S SEPTEMBER PROGRAM: CALLING ALL CHOCOLATE LOVERS!
The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Judea has planned
its opening program of the 2013-2014 year. On Monday,
September 9, at 7:00 PM, the Sisterhood asks its members
and prospective members to join them for a chocolate design
and molding class at "Morkes Chocolates" at
1890 North Rand Road
(between Dundee and Hicks on west side of the street)
in Palatine.
Participants will dip delicious treats in chocolate fondue
and then will learn the art of dipping and decorating chocolate
truffles. There will also be chocolate games and prizes.
Cost for Sisterhood members: $20.

The Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Fund of Congregation Beth Judea was established by his family and many friends following his
passing in January 1996. Jack was a founding member of Congregation Beth Judea, a dynamic member of its Men’s Club,
Ritual Committee and board of Directors. He was also a steady force within the synagogue choir and was devoted to the Jewish
music with which he was raised. He was loved and respected by all for his strong work ethic, his terrific sense of humor, his
good nature and positive outlook on life. Over the years, the Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Fund has underwritten a series of
wonderful concerts, open to the entire community. The Golf Outing was started to support this fund and its efforts.

Interpretive Minyan in the Library
Words of My Mouth: Talmud Study
Sunday mornings at 8 am
The Talmud is a profoundly rich compilation of
wisdom that has continued relevance to our
contemporary search for meaning. This weekly
class provides an examination of current
understanding of Jewish law, secular law,
sociology, mythology, or agadah, and often dwells
on ques-tions incorporating current events. Orin
Rotman will facilitate this weekly Talmud study
session. (Artscroll Schottenstein edition is used for
the class)
Sweet Taste of Torah
Wednesday evenings at 8 pm
For thousands of years Judaism has been
interpreting and applying the Torah to everyday life.
This class follows the Tanach cycle. Each week we
will read through several chapters a week of the
Nevim (Prophets) texts, then on to Ketuvim
(Writings), then back to Torah again.

You are invited to join the Interpretive Minyan in the
Library the first and third Shabbat of every month. Our
minyan is designed to build community by providing a
passionate, meaningful and spiritual Shabbat morning
experience.
This Shabbat morning service focuses on examining the
structure of the prayer service, learning the major prayers
and becoming more comfortable with the choreography
and customs of the Shabbat morning service.
Our minyan is friendly and welcoming to all who choose to
attend. We meet in the synagogue library on the second
floor from 10:30 until 11:45.
