Faith Inspired Education
Welcome
It is with great privilege and pleasure that through God’s grace,
we are able to congratulate the community on the news that
the Department of Education has given us the go-ahead to
open a secondary Sikh faith school in September 2013.
In 2007, the Khalsa Primary School opened
its doors and has recently been awarded
an ‘Outstanding’ school status by Ofsted.
The school has reached the pinnacle of
our educational system in a short space
of time. This is as a direct result of the
combined efforts of the Governors, Staff,
Parents, Volunteers and of course the
children.
The Secondary school will be built on the
success of the Primary and just like the
Primary, it will be a faith school, grounded
in Sikh beliefs and teachings.
Our
commitment is to educate all our students
to become everything that they can be
and are meant to be, and prepare them to
play their part in our dynamic, multi-faith,
multi-ethnic and multi-talented society.
The literal translation of the word ’Sikh’ is a
life-long learner and we will inspire a love
of learning, a spirit of enquiry and improve
the life chances and opportunities for
all our students. A sense of fun and
enjoyment will prevail in an ethos of
mutual respect.
This is your school a place for your child to
flourish, experience a dynamic curriculum
which provides challenge and excitement.
There will be an extensive programme and
opportunity to learn sports which remain
part of Sikh history and transformed for
today’s Olympic games. An additional
hour each day allows for us to ensure an
enriched and encompassing experience
for all our pupils and provision of a
different kind.
We look forward to welcoming you to the
Secondary school on the 4th September
2013.
The Trustees of the Slough Sikh
Education Trust
Our Mission & Vision
The Khalsa Secondary School will build on the outstanding
provision of Khalsa Primary School and will be a happy and
inclusive school, where students of all faiths and of none are
respected and supported.
We will nurture the potential of all students and provide them with opportunities to
achieve more than they thought possible. The Sikh faith is emphatic in respecting all
faiths and does not seek to convert. Our vision for the school is based on the Sikh ethos.
Beyond Academic
Achievement
(kirat karna)
Beyond The
Individual (naam
japna)
Beyond
Selflessness
(wandh chakna)
Where we will provide
an exceptional academic
education and encourage
a passion for life-long
learning where students,
staff and parents will work
together with honesty,
integrity and selfdiscipline.
We will foster all aspects
of personal development
and encourage students
to take a life-long journey
of self-discovery. The
principles of Khalsa will
support students in
undertaking this journey
towards purity of spirit
by self-reflection and
meditation.
We will inspire students
to share their future skills,
knowledge and income
with those in need without
discrimination.
Within a Spiritual Environment
We provide an inclusive morning assembly period where
students and teachers will collectively congregate, focusing on
universal values and prayers from the Sikh scriptures.
Each day will begin with prayers for all
of humanity in accordance with the
Akal Takhat (supreme authority) code of
conduct.
our mission are the Sikh values of Naam
Japna (meditation), Kirat Karna (honest
earning) and Vand Shakna (sharing your
earnings with the needy).
We will build an understanding of other
faiths whilst positively nurturing each
young person’s own faith. At the heart of
We will reflect on our commitment to
these values every day during our prayers.
“
Khalsa Primary Slough is an outstanding Sikh school where Sikh values
permeate daily life and drive aspirations.”

Pastoral care
Students will find themselves in a school where great
importance is attached to pastoral care. The Khalsa way will
be at the heart of our daily life, and will be the foundation for
nurturing the individual.
This is one reason why they will do well
within the school, whatever their ability.
Pastoral care will be organised on a year
group system building a supportive
school community allowing their
academic work as well as personality
and character to flourish. We will work
positively, celebrating what is good,
encouraging and inspiring so that every
student can understand and develop
their potential.
Academic Excellence
We will have high expectations of our students. We will expect
each student to work hard, to play hard, and to take a full part
in the life of the school.
Each student will be challenged to give
of their best. We will use the Khalsa ethos
of personal care to identify personal,
social, spiritual and academic targets for
each student, which will be monitored
regularly. We will have excellent facilities
and a highly committed and professional
staff dedicated to supporting and guiding
your child’s development.
“
We will provide the opportunities for a
rich educational experience that enables
everyone to become fully developed
personally with the confidence and
capability to make a positive contribution
to society.
In all that we do in school we will aim for quality and excellence.”
An Outstanding Curriculum
All students will follow a core academic curriculum including:
English Language and Literature,
Mathematics, Science, Modern Foreign
Language, History, Geography, Religious
and Sikh Studies, Information Technology,
Music (including Shabad (hymn) practice),
Drama, Art, Design and Technology,
Personal and Citizenship Studies (PHSE)
and Physical Education.
Panjabi or another Modern Foreign
Language will be a compulsory part of the
additional curriculum. Another foreign
language will also be made available.
At the end of Key Stage 3, students will
select courses to be studied to GCSE level
in Years 9, 10 and 11.
The English Baccalaureate will form the
core curriculum. Sikh students will be
expected to take Panjabi and Sikh Studies
except in special circumstances.
Extended Sports Curriculum
We believe that education continues beyond the traditional
school day.
There will be a wide range of activities
in which students may extend their
skills and aptitudes or just have fun. Our
students will have the opportunity to
partake in debates and drama, be able
“
to choose from a range of activities to
include, traditional sports such as archery,
martial arts, horse riding, classical music
and community projects.
The development of the whole person is crucial and this will be
supported through a wide range of extracurricular and enrichment
activities.”
Aadam Syed, age 11, European Golf
Tournament 2012 Champion and member of
Sikh Golf Society UK
Good Discipline
A strong foundation for good discipline has been built within
the Khalsa Primary school.
We will continue to instil the same values
and excellent behaviour management
and will set high expectations for all to
continue to create the right environment
for learning.
In Partnership
We will establish strong bonds between home, school and the
community; sharing time and skills with the community in
order both to enhance the experience of students and parents
and to strengthen the local community.
We want to work in partnership with
parents to help their child to achieve
their full potential and make a positive
contribution. The happiness of your son or
“
daughter will be as important as academic
and personal success. Together we can
achieve anything.
We will continue a close relationship with parents and the community
as this will be fundamental to our approach and we will strive to involve
them so that they too feel part of the school.”
Charitable Giving
We will be building on the charity support provided through
the Khalsa Primary School.
Each year 7 group will agree to support
a suitable local charity or community
project, which they will continue to
support throughout their school life. This
will allow the pupils to develop long term
relationships with the wider community.
